Greenwashing or sustainable environmental practices? The case of cruise tourism
Cruise tourism is a highly environmentally damaging form of tourism, causing various environmental degradation. This study aims to characterise cruise tourism, frame it technically and legally within international legal instruments, particularly concerning environmental policies and practices, and assess if companies' sustainability measures are steps towards sustainability or greenwashing practices. These practices are operationalised to respond to the demands of public opinion and an increasingly demanding demand in these matters, the so-called green consumers. To achieve these objectives, a comprehensive range of qualitative and quantitative data was gathered and analysed. As conclusion, cruise lines have made significant changes towards the sustainability commitments established by international organisations and the public. Nevertheless, due to their distinctive characteristics, dimensions, and intricacies, there is still a dearth of technological and logistical alternatives that are commensurate with the scale of cruise ships, despite the advancement that has been made in this direction
"Beskrajnost"
stvaranja i bavljenja ovim procesom
Hypoalbuminemia as an Unusual Presentation of Undiagnosed Atypical Celiac Disease in an 84-Year-Old Woman
Celiac disease is a chronic, immune-mediated enteropathy that is precipitated by dietary gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. Gastrointestinal symptoms and signs of malabsorption characterize a classical form of the disease, while patients with nonclassical celiac disease lack significant gastrointestinal symptoms. We report an uncommon case of celiac disease in an 84-year-old oligosymptomatic female with a recently treated colon tumor, diagnosed during the investigation of profound hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia. In this case, two factors could have been misleading about the cause of hypoalbuminemia: malignant tumor and advanced age. Since the oncological disease was in remission, and the albumin concentration in the healthy elderly people in the community usually exceeds 38 g/L until after the age of 90, we pursued an alternative cause, leading to the diagnosis of celiac disease. Even in the absence of intestinal symptoms, advanced age, or other diagnoses, celiac disease should be considered a potential differential diagnosis in every patient presenting with hypoalbuminemia
Analysis of influential factors on the ship in navigation
Unutarnji čimbenici, poput geometrijskih i konstrukcijskih karakteristika broda, sustava propulzije, kormilarenja te vrste tereta, određuju osnovne plovne sposobnosti i upravljivost broda. This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of the key factors influencing a ship during navigation and manoeuvring. The main objective is to identify and explain how internal, external, and human factors affect a vessel’s behaviour in various navigational conditions. Internal factors such as the ship’s geometrical and structural characteristics, propulsion and steering systems, and the type of cargo transported define the vessel’s inherent manoeuvrability and hydrodynamic performance. External factors—including meteorological and oceanographic conditions, fairway and harbour characteristics, the presence of other vessels, tug assistance, and interaction with the seabed and shoreline—significantly influence ship handling and increase operational complexity. Special attention is given to hydrodynamic phenomena such as squat and bank effect, which occur when navigating in shallow or confined waters, as well as to the role of technical communication systems (e.g., VHF) and cooperation with port and traffic control services. The human factor is addressed as a crucial element, both in terms of internal crew organization and in interactions with external agents such as pilots, VTS centres, and nearby vessels. The thesis concludes that successful and safe ship handling depends on the integration of all these factors, requiring a high level of knowledge, experience, and situational awareness by the ship’s master and deck officers
Protection of Creditors and Employees in Cross-Border Reorganizations of Companies
Amendments to the Companies Act from 2023 improved existing provisions on cross-border mergers and introduced new provisions on cross-border divisions and conversions of companies. Both domestic companies and those from EU Member States have the option to select a cross-border reorganization procedure that aligns with their specific characteristics and needs. Creditors and employees of companies participating in cross-border reorganizations have the right to be informed about the consequences of these operations. They have the ability to raise objections to the cross-border reorganization plan, thereby indirectly influencing the company’s decision on the reorganization. Based on the information provided, creditors can request guarantees for any outstanding claims before the cross-border reorganization takes effect. Employee participation rights in the resulting company are protected by the application of the provisions outlined in the Act on Employees Participation in Decision-Making in SE and SCE. This prevents suspension or reduction of employee participation rights in cross-border operations
Integrating Sustainability and Innovation in Traditional Wooden Boat Reconstruction: TOFOLA Project
This paper explores environmentally friendly approaches in the reconstruction process of traditional
wooden boats, focusing on sustainability, innovation, and the preservation of maritime heritage. Through
the TOFOLA project, methods that combine traditional shipbuilding with modern technologies, such
as reverse engineering and digital modelling, are analysed to ensure the authenticity and longevity of
the restored vessels. Special attention is given to the procurement of materials, the use of local and
certified wood, and reducing the ecological footprint throughout the boat’s life cycle. Solutions for
environmentally friendly propulsion and the integration of reconstructed boats into sustainable tourism
along the Adriatic coast are also considered. The conclusions of this research highlight the importance
of synergy between traditional craftsmanship, innovative engineering solutions, and environmentally
conscious logistics of wood procurement to preserve and revitalize the maritime cultural heritage of
the Adriatic region
Exposure of human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells to amphetamine-type stimulants leads to oxidative-antioxidative imbalance associated with DNA damage and acetylcholine antagonism
Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATSs) are widely abused substances that impair central and peripheral nervous system functions. The mechanisms of their toxicity on human neuronal cells have not been fully clarified yet but include effects on oxidative-antioxidative balance and interaction with synaptic enzymes/receptors. The aims of this study were to determine oxidant/antioxidant status, DNA integrity and the activity of neurotransmitter system components (monoamine oxidase A, MAO-A and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, nAChR) in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells after 24-h exposure to different ATSs. In this matter, we first evaluated cell viability by MTS assay. After determination of the concentrations (near IC25) suitable for conduction of the alkaline comet assay, these were further studied for the extent of DNA damage, along with the levels of malondialdehyde, reactive oxygen species (ROS), glutathione (GSH) and activities of antioxidative enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT). The activity of the MAO-A enzyme and nAChR activity were evaluated at concentration range 1-50 mu M. Finally, the in silico pharmacokinetic parameters predictions of the tested ATSs were determined. When compared to untreated cells, the most notable result was obtained for amphetamine (AMP), where we observed a significant increase in ROS levels, SOD, GPx and CAT activity, and a decrease in GSH levels. Interestingly, all of the tested ATSs increased the activity of GPx, while the activities of the other enzymes were compound-dependent. The new psychoactive substance (NPS) mephedrone (4-MMC) had a similar effect as AMP, except that it did not affect CAT activity. At the tested concentrations, AMP, methamphetamine (METH) and 4-MMC also showed effects on DNA stability. None of the tested ATSs inhibited MAO-A in the tested concentration range, but AMP, METH, 3,4-methylenediox-ymethamphetamine (MDMA) and 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) inhibited acetylcholine activation of human nAChR. Taken together, significant induction of oxidative stress parameters, increased level of DNA damage detected and inhibition of nAChR activity indicate potential mechanisms of ATS substances action, and represent the direction for further studies to clarify the toxicological risks associated with ATS and/or NPS consumption
