Something New about the Relatives of Strabo
э. (App. Mithr. 23; Dio Cass. XXX-XXXV. 101. 1). The article includes two essays concerning the identification of the Strabo's grandfather by the paternal line. On the base of conjecture to be added to passage Strabo XII. 33. 3 C 557, I come to conclusion that he could bear the wide-spread Paphlagonian name Atotes. The second presents an attempt to prove the identity of two historical persons - Strabo's relative Theophilos, son of Tibios (Strabo XII. 33. 3 C 558), and certain Theophilos the Paphlagonian, who was leading for the extermination of the Roman citizens in Tralloi in 88 BC (App. Mithr. 23; Dio Cass. XXX-XXXV. 101. 1).
Tranquility of the Soul in Interpretation of the Roman Citizens
There was a notion of the complex of public virtues (Aequitas, Clementia, Fides, Libertas, Pietas, Virtus) in the Roman civil society. Those virtues served the purpose of moral assessment in politics. Simultaneously, some of public virtues were private ones as well. The article deals with peculiarities of the concept of Securitas as an ideal of serenity, calmness, tranquility of the soul
Traineeships Аbroad as a Stage of Professional Training of Classical Scholars (for example, of the scientific school of M.S. Kutorga)
This article is devoted to a question of a role of foreign training in the course of formation of historians of the XIX century. The author shows that time which they spent abroad, helped young historians to be created as scientists and teachers
"Res publica Camunnorum":
В I в. Valle Camonica is a valley located in the central Alps. It was the place where the Camunian civilization developed. The Romans conquered the area in 16 B.C. and subdued the population of the Camunni. In the 1st century the Camunni were well integrated into Roman system, gained the Roman citizenship. They were assigned to the Quirina tribus and gained administrative autonomy with the institution of a republic: the res publica Camunnorum. Archaeological finds show a well Romanized population: the city of Cividate Camuno became the Roman centre of the valley, with the construction of a forum, thermae, theater, amphitheater and necropolis. Among Camunni citizens there were magistrates like duumviri, aediles, quaestors, while in military many men served in Roman army in many locations of the Empire.
On the Reliability of Herodotus' Calculation of Aristeas Proconnesius' Date
э. Herodotus' summary of Aristeas' poem (Hdt. IV. 13) remains the key evidence for his date. It provides information about the migrations of the nomadic tribes, which took place in the late 8th century BC and which could still have been in progress at the beginning of the 7th century (no such migrations are attested for the 6th century). This conclusion agrees with Herodotus' calculation of the date of Aristeas' disappearance from Proconnesus and is corroborated by some external evidence from the 7th and 6th centuries BC concerning the Arimaspeia. The author arrives at the conclusion that the later date conjectured by Rhode by conflating two dates in the Suda should be rejected. Given the evident conflation of two different persons in the Suda lemma, each of these dates may refer to a different Aristeas, the one (the 50th Olympiad) suiting Aristeas, the son of Demoharides and the author of prosaic Theogony, the other (the 8th Olympiad) being appropriate for Aristeas, the son of Kaystrobius and the author of the Arimaspeia. The evidence for the latter may be placed in the tradition about Aristeas as a teacher of Homer, which has nothing in common with the historic Aristeas. The author shows that Herodotus bases his calculation on Aristeas' Metapontine epiphany because it took place shortly before Herodotus' own visit to the city (cf. Hdt. IV. 15), i.e. between 450 and 425 BC. If Herodotus' calculation was based on counting three thirty-year long generations per century, we should take into account that his figure (240 years) includes an extra-decade for each century, i.e. twenty years at least. On these grounds, Aristeas' travel could be located in the interval between 680 and 660 BC, which is not far from the foundation dates of Istria and Borysthenes. In the second part of the article, the author undertakes a philological analysis of the extant fragments of the Arimaspeia and argues against A.I. Ivantchik's stylistic arguments for the poem's later date (which is even later than the one proposed by Rhode!). Moreover, the interpretation of the central images of Aristeas' surviving texts does not contradict the external evidence that places the date of the Arimaspeia in the second quarter of the 7th century BC.
Many Greek poets, including very early ones, referred to the sun's night journey in a cup-like device. Most of them spoke of the 'cup'; the poet of the "Titanomachia", followed by other writers, called in the 'cauldron'. Mimnermus described it as a 'winged hollow bed', but Athenaeus may be right in interpreting Mimnermus' words as a hint at the hollow shape of a cup. The only detailed exposition of Helios' daily voyage comes from Mimnermus. It includes nontrivial idea of the Sun's god changing vehicle. During the day Helios travels in a chariot and during the night he uses a 'winged hollow bed' to sail from the place of the sunset to the place of the sunrise. It is argued in this paper that the motif of the sun's night journey in a cuplike device originated either in the Danube region or in Scandinavia and that the motif of the Sun's god changing vehicle is of Scandinavian provenance.
On Some Aspects of Christian Teaching on Providence and Fate in Late Antiquity
This paper examines the way Christian thought of Late Antiquity transformed the theory of providence and fate found in pagan philosophy. It shows that the concept of fate was not rejected by Christian thinkers (as it is commonly believed), but that it underwent a long process of transformation. Several important Christian thinkers have been studied in this context, among them Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Eusebius of Caesarea, Nemesius of Emessa, Evagrius and Maximus the Confessor. Special attention is paid to Nemesius’s constructive criticism of the Middle Platonists’ teaching on fate and necessity. It is shown that Maximus the Confessor’s theory of providence and judgment may be treated as a Christian alternative to theory of providence and fate found in pagan philosophy (especially in the Platonists). Maximus did receive his notions of God’s providence and judgment from Evagrius, but he modified his concepts, so they were no longer a variation of a common Platonic myth, which was typical of both Evagrius and Origen. From Nemesius, Maximus received his definition of providence elaborated in a dialogue with Middle Platonists. Unlike many other Christian authors, Maximus understood God’s judgment not only as a moral judgment and punishment or reward, but predominantly as an act of ontological differentiation and maintenance of individuals and species in their unique features and movement towards God. Maximus’s theory of providence and judgment presupposed a dynamic view of a world order, which was a fulfillment of God’s plan. Unlike his pagan predecessors, particularly Hierocles (whose views are also discussed in the paper), Maximus did not make God’s judgment and justice some “lower” deity or force in comparison with providence. In Maximus, both God’s providential care for the world and for each human being and God’s judgment (understood in its ontological dimension) were equally and eternally belonging to One God, as were His two main forces directed towards His creation
