Automating awareness, digitizing dissemination : the radical right research robot as a template for (political) science communication in a fragmented social media landscape
Over the last 15 years, social media have become an integral part of the science infrastructure. The emergence of ‘Science Twitter’, the collective of scholars active on the platform now known as ‘X’, is a particularly prominent example of this trend. Within such communities, automated services (‘bots’) can play an important role by raising public and internal awareness of publications in the field, fostering connections amongst researchers, and stimulating serendipitous insights. In this note, I discuss the architecture of one such service: the Radical Right Research Robot (RRRR), written in the R programming language, which posts references and links to contributions from the vast literature on radical right/far-right parties and their voters. I also describe the various R packages and other open source tools on which RRRR relies. This description could serve as a template for similar bots in other fields. Finally, I discuss the challenges resulting from Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter and the subsequent decline of Science Twitter. RRRR has already branched out to two alternative text-based networks (Mastodon and Bluesky) and may eventually disengage from Twitter. While the technical difficulties involved are relatively easy to solve, fundamental issues related to platform ownership and governance persist
A genome-wide analysis of structure and evolution in Irish and British populations of Bombus terrestris (L. 1758) : implications for genetic resource conservation
Insect pollinators play vital regulatory roles within ecosystems and provide humanity with essential services that support our health, wellbeing, and economies. Despite their importance, reported declines at regional and national levels have raised concerns over the continuation of such benefits. Island pollinator populations are of particular conservation interest as they may harbor lower genetic diversity due to restricted gene flow caused by geographical barriers, which may in turn influence local selective processes. In this study, we investigated the population structure and potential targets of selection within the genomes of a bumblebee subspecies, Bombus terrestris audax, native to the islands of Ireland and Great Britain. In particular, we compared the genomes of wild-caught populations from each island alongside representatives of other European subspecies and commercial imports to ascertain patterns of historical admixture. Our analysis identified a largely genetically distinct population of B. t. audax on the island of Ireland, with weak evidence of admixture. In addition, we find differential signatures of positive selection between the two island populations in genes associated with neurology and development, indicating potential local adaptation. Furthermore, we identified an extremely polymorphic region on chromosome 10 with evidence of shared haplotypes in both wild and commercial bees, which may represent long-standing genetic variation at the continental level or potential localized admixture between wild and commercial bees. Collectively, our findings inform on the genetic distinctiveness of these island bumblebees, emphasizing the applied need to genetically characterize natural populations to ensure the conservation of genetic resources—in the context of this study, by informing risk-assessment and management of commercial bumblebees. In addition, our study reinforces the utility of genomic approaches in the biomonitoring of isolated or regionally adapted insect pollinator populations, which will contribute towards the effective conservation of these ecologically vital organisms
Electrostatic anchoring in RNA-ligand design : dissecting the effects of positive charges on affinity, selectivity, binding kinetics, and thermodynamics
Targeting RNA with small molecules is an emerging field in medicinal chemistry. However, highly potent ligands are often challenging to achieve. One intuitive strategy to enhance ligand’s potency is the implementation of positively charged moieties to interact with the negatively charged RNA phosphate backbone. We investigated the effect of such “electrostatic anchors” on binding affinity, kinetics, thermodynamics, and selectivity by MST, SPR, and ITC experiments, respectively, with the Ba SAM-VI riboswitch and the Tte preQ1 riboswitch aptamer model systems. RNA-ligand interactions were dominated by enthalpy, and electrostatic anchors had moderate effects on binding affinity driven by faster association rates for higher charged ligands. Despite the observations of loose binding interactions in SPR experiments with multibasic ligands, selectivity over structurally unrelated RNA off-targets was maintained. Therefore, the addition of positively charged moieties is no universal RNA-ligand design principle, but a purposefully implemented ionic RNA-ligand interaction can enhance potency without impairing selectivity

Numerical modelling of diffusion-limited mineral growth for geospeedometry applications
Diffusion and crystal growth are common processes in nature and can be observed in rocks that have experienced relatively high temperatures. Information about these processes is stored in the composition gradients of minerals. Diffusion can either occur within single crystals or across mineral interfaces. In the case of intercrystalline ion exchange, composition profiles across the interfaces are always discontinuous and may exhibit sharp compositional gradients. The compositional discontinuity and the associated gradients require an accurate treatment for the interface boundary condition. Here, we present a software package (MovingBoundaryMinerals.jl) that is openly available. In this package, we use an adaptive finite element method to describe the diffusion-couple equilibrium by taking into account the moving boundary separating the two phases. In addition, we utilize an adaptive grid approach to resolve the compositional gradients accurately at the interface region. This approach allows modelling a wide range of applications from mineral diffusion, simple ion exchange between diffusion couples, and diffusion-limited growth. The package has been tested versus variable available analytical solutions for diffusion and growth, and several benchmark cases are presented. Finally, our package can be used to model compositional gradients in growing/dissolving/diffusing crystals in the framework of diffusion chronometry and geospeedometry. This approach can provide thermal/time constraints in various geologic phenomena
Multicentre comparison of various microaxial pump devices as a bridge to durable assist device implantation
Aims:
Patients with acute decompensated advanced heart failure requiring left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation often experience progressive cardiac function deterioration, negatively impacting surgical outcomes. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of different microaxial flow pump (mAFP) support devices (Impella®) in achieving optimal left ventricular unloading for preconditioning and facilitating definitive treatment in this high-risk patient cohort.
Methods and results:
A retrospective analysis was conducted across 19 high-volume European centres. The study population included patients transitioning from temporary to durable circulatory support over a 7.5-year period, with a median follow-up of 1 year. Patients were categorized based on mAFP support capacity: those receiving high-flow support (>5 L/min, ‘5+’) and those with lower-flow support (3.5 L/min, ‘CP’). Patients who were initially treated with CP but subsequently upgraded to 5+ support were classified in the 5+ group. Demographic and clinical characteristics, mobilization, right heart function, and organ dysfunction outcomes were analysed. A total of 339 patients received preoperative mAFP support prior to LVAD implantation. The 5+ group comprised 247 patients (73%), including 38 patients who were upgraded from CP, while the CP group included 92 patients (27%). Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics were comparable between groups, except for mobilization status, which showed significant differences (P < 0.001). Patients in the 5+ group achieved higher rates of full and partial mobilization compared to the CP group. Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) was more frequently required in the CP group than in the 5+ group (40.5% vs. 33.8%; P < 0.001). Additionally, right ventricular assist device (RVAD) implantation was significantly more common in the CP group (29.2% vs. 18.2%; P = 0.026). Patients in the 5+ group demonstrated greater reductions in both vasoactive inotropic scores (P = 0.006) and inotropic scores (P = 0.008). Furthermore, liver dysfunction (P = 0.016), renal failure (P = 0.041), and the need for dialysis (P = 0.013) were significantly more prevalent in the CP group. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of LVAD operative duration (P = 0.637) or cardiopulmonary bypass time (P = 0.408).
Conclusions:
High-flow mAFP devices (+5) provided superior haemodynamic support, enhanced left ventricular unloading, and reduced dependence on catecholamines compared to lower-flow CP devices. These improvements were associated with lower rates of right ventricular failure, renal dysfunction, and liver injury. However, no statistically significant difference was observed between mAFP groups regarding 30-day mortality rates

Biobased oleyl glycidyl ether: copolymerization with ethylene oxide, postmodification, thermal properties, and micellization behavior
Oleyl glycidyl ether (OlGE) is a highly hydrophobic monomer synthesized from a biobased fatty alcohol and epichlorohydrin. When combined with hydrophilic monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) macroinitiators, well-defined, highly amphiphilic AB block copolymers are obtained via anionic ring-opening polymerization (Đ ≤ 1.08). Surprisingly, an investigation of the copolymerization kinetics of OlGE and ethylene oxide revealed an almost ideally random copolymerization (rEO = 1.27, rOlGE = 0.78) despite the significant structural differences. Both statistical and block copolymers were investigated regarding their behavior in aqueous solution. The block copolymers of the type mPEG-b-POlGE featured two distinct melting temperatures (Tms). Besides a melting transition of mPEG, a second Tm is attributed to the crystallization of the cis-alkenyl side chains of the OlGE units. Varying degrees of side chain hydrogenation of the POlGE homopolymer using potassium azodicarboxylate (PADA) allowed for tailoring of the Tm. The thiol–ene click reaction permitted subsequent functionalization. This work does not merely highlight the prospect of novel polyether surfactants, it also suggests the potential of biobased long-chain polyethers for the development of drug delivery systems featuring temperature-controlled release
Body image and mental health in women with polycystic ovary syndrome : a cross-sectional study
Purpose
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a multifaceted endocrine-metabolic condition affecting around 5–15% of women globally. Despite its prevalence and diverse impact, the psychological aspect of PCOS is often underestimated in clinical settings, leading to significant distress among affected individuals. This study aimed to explore the extent of body image perception disorders, psychological comorbidities, and their influence on the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in women with PCOS. Additionally, we focused on measuring the impact of factors associated with PCOS, particularly obesity, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of their effects.
Methods
An online survey was distributed anonymously to gynecologists, hospitals, and women’s clinics across Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, as well as through social media platforms to connect with women with PCOS. The survey was conducted from November 14, 2023, to February 05, 2024. HRQOL, anxiety/depression levels, body image and self-esteem were assessed employing the Modified-PCOS-Questionnaire (MPCOSQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS) and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE) respectively. Identification of potential confounding variables relied on their plausibility and association with the estimate. Adjusted odds ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals were computed through regression analysis.
Results
587 participants fully completed the questionnaire. The study participants were on average 32.5 ± 5.9 years old and had a BMI of 31.3 ± 7.8 kg/m2. In this study, 84.5% of all PCOS patients exhibited pathological scores in the MBSRQ-AS Appearance Evaluation, 83.8% in Body Areas Satisfaction, and 67.5% in Overweight Preoccupation. Half of the participants (46.7%) showed significantly poor results in the RSE, indicating low self-esteem. A notable portion of the study participants displayed elevated HADS scores, which supports a higher rate of distress in PCOS patients. (HADS-Anxiety > 8: 75.0% (440); HADS-Depression > 8: 57.6% (338). Examining the HRQOL of PCOS patients revealed that all average scores of the subscales, except for the Acne subscale and MPCOSQ-Total (3.6 ± 1:0), were situated in the lower half, indicating diminished HRQOL. The linear regression revealed that pathological values in the MBSRQ-AS, indicating impaired body image, were associated with low scores in the MPCOSQ subscales and HADS scales, suggesting impaired HRQOL and a higher rate of distress in PCOS patients. Furthermore, the multivariate analysis showed a statistically significant link between adverse body perception and HRQOL, as well as distress among PCOS patients in this study group. [multivariate HADS-Anxiety: MBSRQ-AS Body Areas Satisfaction (B: − 2.10; CI: − 3.88; − 0.33; p = 0.02) HADS-Depression MBSRQ-AS Body Areas Satisfaction (B: − 1.92; CI: − 3.59; − 0.26; p = 0.02)].
Conclusion
Our findings reveal that obesity and a negative body image are interconnected factors that adversely affect both HRQOL and mental health in women with PCOS. Healthcare professionals should recognize the negative effects of obesity and poor body image in patients with PCOS and proactively provide effective treatment options
