Competing Futures: Reconfiguring Sustainability in US Education Policy from Equity to Meritocracy

    No full text
This study examines how inclusion is discursively constructed in sustainabilityoriented educational policies through a linguistic analysis of six Executive Orders issued by former President Biden during his 2021-2025 administration, and by Donald Trump during the first month of his current presidency, January 2025. Drawing upon a critical discourse perspective and employing the tools provided by Systemic Functional Linguistics, we explore representations of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in order to assess how vulnerability, participation, and exclusion are linguistically framed in the field of education. The findings will contribute to understanding how institutional discourse shapes inclusive education and sustainability, informing strategies for future equitable learning environments

Dissipative Exoskeletons Based on Self-centering SMA Braces for Seismic Retrofit of RC Buildings

    No full text
This article presents the design and assessment of dissipative exoskeletons based on recentering shape memory alloy (SMA) dampers for the seismic retrofit of RC buildings. Although many studies have been presented in the literature on SMA bracing systems, most of them are devoted to experimental and numerical investigations on small-scale SMA devices or brace compo-nents. Only a few studies focus their attention on the application of SMA-brace devices to full-scale RC buildings. This paper focuses on evaluating the effect of using self-centering shape memory alloy dampers for buckling-restrained braces in dissipative exoskeletons applied for the seismic retrofit of a reinforced concrete (RC) school building structure. A design method has been implemented to size the SMA dampers to be placed on selected spans and stories of the exoskeletons. The effectiveness of the design procedure has been demonstrated by nonlinear time-history analyses under different sets of earthquake-strong ground motions

The fNIRS glossary project: a consensus-based resource for functional near-infrared spectroscopy terminology

    No full text
Significance: A shared understanding of terminology is essential for clear scientific communication and minimizing misconceptions. This is particularly challenging in rapidly expanding, interdisciplinary domains that utilize functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), where researchers come from diverse backgrounds and apply their expertise in fields such as engineering, neuroscience, and psychology. Aim: The fNIRS Glossary Project was established to develop a community-sourced glossary covering key fNIRS terms, including those related to the continuous-wave (CW), frequency-domain (FD), and time-domain (TD) NIRS techniques. Approach: The glossary was collaboratively developed by a diverse group of 76 fNIRS researchers, representing a wide range of career stages (from PhD students to experts) and disciplines. This collaborative process, structured across five phases, ensured the glossary’s depth and comprehensiveness. Results: The glossary features over 300 terms categorized into six key domains: analysis, experimental design, hardware, neuroscience, mathematics, and physics. It also includes abbreviations, symbols, synonyms, references, alternative definitions, and figures where relevant. Conclusions: The fNIRS glossary provides a community-sourced resource that facilitates education and effective scientific communication within the fNIRS community and related fields. By lowering barriers to learning and engaging with fNIRS, the glossary is poised to benefit a broad spectrum of researchers, including those with limited access to educational resources

Green bond issuance and value creation for stockholders: evidence from Italy

    No full text
This paper investigates the value creation for the stockholders through the analysis of the stock Italian market reaction when green bonds are issued in the market. Announcement data for issued green bonds have been hand-collected and the empirical analysis has been conducted with the aim of evaluating the difference in stock returns between green bond issuers and not issuers. Stocks have first been filtered for the market returns by capital asset pricing model (CAPM). Then, a nearest neighbours’ approach has been used for matching purposes. Results show that the issuance of green bonds did not affect significantly the remuneration required by stockholders. Our research is directed to academics, practitioners and companies

Redrawing Short UEQ evaluation method for engaging children

    No full text
Children increasingly engage with digital tools, necessitating UX evaluation methods suited to their cognitive abilities. This study redesigns the Short User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ-S) to make it more accessible for young users. The new version integrates illustrations, contextualized items, explanatory text, and a sans-serif font to enhance comprehension and engagement. In particular, illustrations are used as a key element to clarify concepts and make the questionnaire more engaging for children. Following a research through design approach, the structure of the validated UEQ-S is maintained while adapting it to children's needs. Although promising, the redesigned tool requires further testing to assess its effectiveness in realworld applications

Systemic inflammation impairs myelopoiesis and interferon type I responses in humans

    No full text
Systemic inflammatory conditions are classically characterized by an acute hyperinflammatory phase, followed by a late immunosuppressive phase that elevates the susceptibility to secondary infections. Comprehensive mechanistic understanding of these phases is largely lacking. To address this gap, we leveraged a controlled, human in vivo model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced systemic inflammation encompassing both phases. Single-cell RNA sequencing during the acute hyperinflammatory phase identified an inflammatory CD163+SLC39A8+CALR+ monocyte-like subset (infMono) at 4 h post-LPS administration. The late immunosuppressive phase was characterized by diminished expression of type I interferon (IFN)-responsive genes in monocytes, impaired myelopoiesis and a pronounced attenuation of the immune response on a secondary LPS challenge 1 week after the first. The infMono gene program and impaired myelopoiesis were also detected in patient cohorts with bacterial sepsis and coronavirus disease. IFNβ treatment restored type-I IFN responses and proinflammatory cytokine production and induced monocyte maturation, suggesting a potential treatment option for immunosuppression
