University Orientation through Conversational Technologies: Evaluating the User Experience of an Embodied Conversational Agent
Students making decisions during transitions between different stages of education or from education to work increasingly need effective guidance tools that can respond to their needs in a personalized and accessible way. This study investigates the potential of Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs) in the university context, focusing on the user experience evaluation of an agent designed to guide students at the master’s degree program in Communication Strategies andTechniques at the University of Siena. By administering the User Experience Questionnaire Plus (UEQ+) to 17 students, and conducting an exploratory analysis of their conversations with the ECA, the study provides insights into the role that conversational technologies can play in guidance services, helping foster more immediate and effective interactions in response to the communicative and motivational challenges that characterize academic transitions
Workaholism and job performance: testing indirect relationships via work engagement and poor sleep quality
Among the most important outcomes related to workaholism for its implications for both organizations and employees is job performance. However, previous studies that have analyzed this relationship report inconsistent results. Drawing on achievement motivation theory and the work, non-work, and sleep model, the present study aims to understand why workaholism is related to job performance through two opposing paths: a motivational path, in which workaholism is indirectly and positively related to job performance via work engagement, and a recovery path, where workaholism is indirectly and negatively related to job performance through poor sleep quality. The hypothesized relationships were investigated by testing a structural equation model with Mplus 8 on 389 Italian workers (60.9% women; Mage = 38.40 years; SD = 11.54 years). The results showed a significant indirect effect of workaholism on job performance through both work engagement and poor sleep quality, thus supporting the two hypothesized mediating mechanisms. Although the study’s cross-sectional design and self-reported measures represent limitations, our results help uncover two opposing mechanisms linking workaholism to job performance. Theoretically, we further advanced our knowledge about the complex relationship between these two variables by providing empirical evidence on the indirect positive (via work engagement) and negative (via poor sleep quality) relationships that workaholism has on job performance. From a practical perspective, interventions should be implemented to assess workaholism risk, promote work engagement, and prevent poor sleep quality using recovery strategies for employees
Elastic to Plastic Lattice Structure Homogenization via Finite Element Limit Analysis
This work focuses on characterizing structured metamaterials by assessing their elastic law and ultimate strength using finite elements and limit analysis applied to a representative volume element. The elastic and plastic behavior of a reference geometry—the octet truss lattice—is obtained by calculating the response of the representative volume element subjected to prescribed tensor strain bases, namely pure normal strain and pure shear, along the cube symmetry directions. The geometry of the body centered cubic and pure cubic phases of the representative volume element has been analyzed, highlighting that the elastic isotropic behavior depends on the ratio between the stiffnesses of the two phases. The ultimate behavior of the structure has been analyzed through the direct application of the lower bound method of limit analysis. The method has been implemented in a direct finite element environment using the limit analysis procedure developed by the authors. The method was already used and described in previous publications and is briefly recalled. It is based on the identification of the linear operator linking the self-equilibrated stress set to a discrete parameter manifold, accounting for the piecewise continuous distribution of the permanent strain. In the paper, it is highlighted that for different aspect ratios between the body-centered cubic and the pure cubic phase geometry, different ratios between limit shear stress and normal stress arise, the isotropic one assumed to coincide with the von Mises result, where (Formula presented.)
Approaching 100Sn: Structural evolution in 98,100Cd via lifetime measurements
The lifetimes of low-lying excited states below the 8+ seniority isomer were directly measured using fast timing detectors in the neutron-deficient isotopes 98,100Cd. This experiment was conducted with the DEcay SPECtroscopy (DESPEC) setup at GSI, where the ions of interest were produced via a fragmentation reaction and identified using the FRagment Separator (FRS) before being implanted in the AIDA active stopper system, and the γ rays emitted during the de-excitation of isomeric states were detected by the LaBr3 FATIMA Array. The newly deduced values for the reduced transition probabilities were compared with shell-model calculations using different interactions and effective charges. The results indicate that, while 98Cd aligns well with a seniority scheme description, in 100Cd the transition strengths among low-lying states are not fully reproduced, and the nature of these states remains an open problem within the present theoretical description. Ultimately, a key element in the description of this region, crucial for nuclear physics and astrophysics, appears to be the proton-neutron term of the nuclear effective interaction
The Role of Machine Learning to Detect Occult Neck Lymph Node Metastases in Early‐Stage T1/T2 Oral Cavity Carcinomas
Objective: Oral cavity carcinomas (OCCs) represent roughly 50% of all head and neck cancers. The risk of occult neck metastases for early-stage OCCs ranges from 15% to 35%, hence the need to develop tools that can support the diagnosis of detecting these neck metastases. Machine learning and radiomic features are emerging as effective tools in this field. Thus, the aim of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of radiomic features to predict the risk of occult neck metastases in early-stage (T1-T2/N0) OCCs. Study Design: Retrospective study. Setting: A single-institution analysis (Maxillo-facial Surgery Unit, University of Naples Federico II). Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 75 patients surgically treated for early-stage OCC. For all patients, data regarding TNM, in particular pN status after the histopathological examination, have been obtained and the analysis of radiomic features from MRI has been extrapolated. Results: 56 patients confirmed N0 status after surgery, while 19 resulted in pN+. The radiomic features, extracted by a machine-learning algorithm, exhibited the ability to preoperatively discriminate occult neck metastases with a sensitivity of 78%, specificity of 83%, an AUC of 86%, accuracy of 80%, and a positive predictive value (PPV) of 63%. Conclusions: Our results seem to confirm that radiomic features, extracted by machine learning methods, are effective tools in detecting occult neck metastases in early-stage OCCs. The clinical relevance of this study is that radiomics could be used routinely as a preoperative tool to support diagnosis and to help surgeons in the surgical decision-making process, particularly regarding surgical indications for neck lymph node treatment

From "definitive" to "reversible" architecture
How is a project born in relation to the built?
This seemingly simple question implies complex answers and not always completely exhaustive for that very often you have to train the mind to new types of approaches so as to make the "answer" innovative, and be able to address all the issues, social, formal and environmental aspects more easily, especially in relation to the existing building. The type of modality I propose is that of intervention on the existing through installations, which, by their nature, are modular, removable and easily recyclable and overlap the already made, reducing waste and respecting the pre-existing structures.
This approach can be divided into two categories: "definitive" and "reversible" interventions. Among the first is the restoration of Liliana Grassi in the courtyard of the icehouse of the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan, where the new intervention is clearly distinguished from the pre-existing one. Or the intervention of Carlo Scarpa at the Castelvecchio Museum where the architect restores the entire factory and designs the exhibition apparatus harmoniously integrating it with the context, through a deep study of pre-existence.
Another significant work is that of Ezio De Felice at the Archaeological Museum of Salerno, composed of a steel structure that supports the ancient architectural system, transforming it into an exhibition object. Integration tends to create an innovative and modern space while preserving purely historical elements.
As for "reversible" interventions, we can mention the projects of Franco Albini, such as the exhibition of Italian Contemporary Art in Stockholm (1953) or the Montecatini stand with Franca Helg (1961). In these cases, the use of lightweight and removable frames allows a temporary interaction and thus respecting with the built space.
Adaptation and reversibility make it possible to regenerate the degraded built with limited resources, returning a new function, even if temporary. This approach makes it possible to design in an agile, sustainable and context-sensitive way, offering formal and environmental solutions in continuous evolution
