    Il saggio indaga sull’accusa di adulterio promossa da Augusto contro Giulia, sua unica figlia. Preliminarmente l’A, attraverso il racconto tramandato dagli antichi, ricompone l’esperienza umana di Giulia, la sua formazione, i suoi legami familiari ed affettivi, al fine di comprenderne la complessa e poliedrica personalità. L’attenzione viene quindi rivolta all’arco temporale che va dal 10 al 2 a.C., periodo in cui la figlia del princeps intensificò le frequentazioni con alcuni giovani intellettuali, critici nei confronti di Augusto, ostentando comportamenti sempre più trasgressivi a seguito dei quali fu accusata e ritenuta colpevole di adulterio. Secondo l’A., tale incriminazione, certamente fondata, non esclude tuttavia l’esistenza di motivazioni politiche: la donna, infatti, con la sua condotta libertina e sfrontata, aveva mostrato disprezzo nei confronti delle leggi ‘moralizzatrici’ volute da Augusto, momento centrale della sua politica, e dunque la dura pena a lei inflitta era volta a reprimere, ed in modo esemplare, una condotta che esprimeva in modo inequivocabile un dissenso politico

It focuses on the tangible and intangible tools of the architect of the time, to better identify them and refine the understanding of their role in professional practice. Some technical and operational tools of his daily professional practice are illustrated by means of selected case studies, focusing on the design process and on the analysis of the drawings in their materiality

    Measurements of IgG Protein at Ultralow and Ultrawide Concentration Ranges Exploiting Spoon-Shaped Waveguides

    In this work, a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on plastic spoon-shaped waveguides and plastic optical fibers (POFs) was tested in a novel experimental configuration. The latter was achieved by launching the light from the bowl of the spoon and collecting it from its neck. First, the sensor was optically tested, thus obtaining a 55% improvement in terms of bulk sensitivity with respect to the better spoon-shaped sensor configuration presented in the literature. Then, binding tests were performed by functionalizing the neck of the SPR spoon-shaped probe with an anti-IgG-based recognition layer. The SPR biosensor tested via the novel experimental configuration was tested in IgG detection, denoting an ultralow limit of detection (LOD) equal to about 60 fM. Moreover, by keeping the measurement setup unchanged and by a 180° rotation of the biosensor chip position, it was possible to achieve an LOD of about 50 pM. Therefore, the proposed sensing approach can be used to span a higher concentration range, thus paving the way to the possibility to detect the IgG in an ultrawide concentration range over four orders of magnitude via a simple rotation of the chip. These findings highlight the adaptability of the spoon-shaped SPR sensor to provide tailored sensitivity through the variation of the interrogation configuration, thus broadening its potential use for various point-of-care test (POCT) applications

    Inflammatory Indices and CA 125: A New Approach to Distinguish Ovarian Carcinoma and Borderline Tumors in Suspicious Ovarian Neoplasms from a Retrospective Observational Multicentric Study

    : Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic potential of systemic inflammatory indices such as Systemic Inflammation Response Index (SIRI) and Systemic Inflammatory Response (SIR). These were assessed in combination with CA 125 to distinguish ovarian carcinoma (OC) from borderline ovarian tumors (BOT) in patients with suspicious adnexal masses. Materials and Methods: A retrospective multicenter observational study including patients undergoing surgery for suspected ovarian neoplasms was conducted. Inclusion criteria required preoperative blood sampling for inflammatory markers and CA 125. SIR-125 and SIRI-125 were developed by combining SIR and SIRI with CA 125 levels. Diagnostic performance was assessed using ROC curve analysis and linear regression models. Results: A total of 63 patients (42 BOT, 21 OC) were analyzed. OC patients exhibited significantly higher SIR-125 and SIRI-125 values (p < 0.001). ROC analysis demonstrated good diagnostic accuracy, with AUCs of 0.83 (SIR-125) and 0.82 (SIRI-125). SIR-125 showed higher specificity (0.83), while SIRI-125 had superior sensitivity (0.86). Conclusions: SIR-125 and SIRI-125 enhance diagnostic differentiation between OC and BOT, providing a simple, cost-effective preoperative tool. Future prospective studies are needed to validate these findings in broader patient populations

    Bonded maxillary expander in growing patients with or without unilateral cleft lip and palate: How does it influence transversal and vertical dentoskeletal changes?

    Objectives Growing patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) usually show maxillary retrusion with constricted upper arch. Thus, orthodontic treatment with maxillary expansion is often needed. This study aimed to evaluate transversal and vertical changes in patients with or without UCLP after maxillary expansion. Material and Methods This observational retrospective study included patients aged between 7 and 14 years, with UCLP (test group) or without cleft lip and palate (controls), constricted upper arch and normodivergent growth pattern treated with a bonded maxillary expander. Patients with craniofacial syndromes, previous orthodontic treatment, or incomplete records were excluded. The digital dental casts and lateral radiographs of the head before (T0) and after treatment (T1) were collected and digitized by scanning with the 3ShapeTRIOS®. Statistical analysis was performed with STATA software. The Chi-square test was used for sex data in the two groups, and evaluation of the differences between the two groups was performed with the independent samples. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The study sample included 51 patients (10.0 ± 2.5 years), 21 patients with UCLP, and 30 patients as the control group. Before treatment, all the transversal values measured on the maxillary arch at the occlusal and gingival level, as well as the length of the arch, presented statistically significant differences between the two groups with P < 0.05. The comparison at T1 did not show significant differences between the two groups for the transversal values, except for the value measured between the second premolars at the gingival level ( P < 0.05). The cephalometric values measured in the analysis in the two groups did not show a statistically significant difference, except for the I-SN who showed significant differences both at T0 and T1 due to the presence of previous scars in UCLP patients. Conclusion The UCLP group showed an improvement in all transverse diameters after treatment with the bonded maxillary expander without affecting the mandibular divergence and incisor inclination
