Orchestration of Multiple Corporate Entrepreneurship Units
A simulation–optimization approach for capacitated lot-sizing in a multi-level pharmaceutical tablets manufacturing process
This paper discusses an iterative simulation–optimization approach to estimate high-quality solutions for the multi-level capacitated lot-sizing problem with linked lot sizes and backorders (MLCLSP-L-B) based on probabilistic demand. It presents the application of the Generalized Uncertainty Framework (GUF) to the MLCLSP-L-B. The research provides an exact mathematical problem formulation and a variable neighborhood search (VNS) algorithm for the GUF. The evaluation procedure uses anonymized real-world data of multi-level pharmaceutical tablets manufacturing processes. It compares the GUF against a two-stage stochastic programming (SP) approach from the literature regarding manufacturing costs and customer service levels. Finally, planning rules and managerial insights are given for the tablets manufacturing processes
Characterisation of beech wood pyrolysis oil: Chemical and physical properties and decomposition kinetics
Biogenic and anthropogenic pyrolysis oils can be used as renewable feedstocks in combustion and entrained flow gasification processes. The design, evaluation and scale-up of these processes can be done using process and CFD models. However, this requires comprehensive and consistent data sets for the chemical and thermo-physical properties and the decomposition kinetics. Such data sets have not yet been compiled for research or for commercial pyrolysis oils. Therefore, this study characterised an industrial beech wood pyrolysis oil using (i) proximate, ultimate and heating value analyses, (ii) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses, (iii) vacuum and Engler distillations and (iv) measurements of density, dynamic viscosity, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity and surface tension under atmospheric-pressure and low-temperature conditions. The chemical analyses demonstrated significant uncertainties in the sampling and the analysis methods, which strongly affect the design and evaluation of pilot-scale entrained flow gasification experiments. The vacuum distillations provided representative samples of the vaporisable and non-vaporisable components to a large extent. The TG analyses showed the superposition of vaporisation and decomposition based on separate analyses of the vacuum distillate and the vacuum distillation residue. Furthermore, thermo-physical property models were developed for the beech wood pyrolysis oil, the vacuum distillate and the vacuum distillation residue. Finally, thermogravimetric kinetics were derived based on multi-reaction Arrhenius law models and multi first-order reaction Gauss distributed activation energy models. Single-particle predictions based on these kinetics indicated that multi first-order reaction Gauss distributed activation energy models should be preferred for extrapolation to high heating rates in the absence of kinetics based on drop-tube reactor experiments
Exploring the Aging Dynamics of Lithium-Ion Batteries for Enhanced Lifespan Understanding
This review examines the aging mechanisms and performance decline of
lithium-ion batteries under various conditions, focusing on temperature effects, charge/discharge efficiency, and operational limits. It covers high-temperature aging and its impact on the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, as well as thermal runaway risks. Low-temperature aging is also discussed, emphasizing reversible capacity loss, increased resistance, and lithium plating. The review addresses degradation from overcharge/overdischarge scenarios and explores coulombic efficiency (CE) degradation and its link to capacity loss. By synthesizing current research, it provides insights into optimizing battery management and enhancing performance
Investigating the impact of wellbore lateral heat transfer on the performance of high-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage system by the coupling of wellbore and reservoir simulators
This study investigates the often-overlooked impact of wellbore lateral heat transfer on high-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES) systems, focusing on the Swiss Bern project. We coupled our in-house wellbore simulator (Moskito) with the reservoir simulator (PorousFlow) under the MOOSE framework to analyze wellbore heat loss. Utilizing both numerical and analytical approaches, we reveal how wellbore heat loss affects HT-ATES performance compared to previous studies that ignored it. Our sensitivity analysis examines various wellbore configurations and operational parameters, evaluating performance indicators including extracted energy, wellbore lateral heat loss fraction, and reservoir heat loss fraction. Key findings include: a more than 10 % difference between the analytical and numerical calculations of wellbore lateral heat loss. Smaller wellbore diameters, such as 6.75 inches, enhance energy recovery efficiency by enabling larger fluid extraction volumes. Low thermal conductivity wellbore casing materials (e.g., 0.045 W m∙K) could reduce wellbore lateral heat loss by 51.4 %. Although energy recovery efficiency declines with more supporting wells during the initial storage cycle, three supporting wells yield the best performance in later cycles due to larger extracted fluid volumes. High flow rates (e.g., 25 L s) enhance energy recovery efficiency by decreasing heat losses through faster fluid movement, which reduces residence time and thermal diffusion. While high fluid injection temperatures (e.g., 210 °C) increase heat losses, overall heat loss fractions decrease due to significant injected energy. This study highlights the critical role of wellbore lateral heat loss in evaluating the performance of the HT-ATES system, providing insights on how to design and optimize these systems

Role of interfacial surface anisotropy on liquid grooving at grain boundaries: A phase-field study
Engineering materials are polycrystalline in nature, consisting of numerous single crystals interconnected through a three-dimensional interfacial network known as grain boundaries. Often essential in defining the performance and durability of materials, grain boundaries attract considerable attention during alloy development. Initially, we employ a multi-phase-field model and validate the phenomenon of grain-boundary grooving under isotropic energy conditions, with bulk diffusion as the dominant mass transport mechanism. Subsequently, we investigate the effects of interfacial surface anisotropy and crystal misorientation on groove formation. This present study focuses on the effects of interfacial surface anisotropy and crystal misorientation and, thus, allows us to draw comparisons between the effects of different physical phenomena on the grain-boundary behavior. It is observed that the groove kinetics accelerate as a result of fourfold anisotropy, with groove root deepening proportional to the imposed anisotropic strength. Furthermore, the phase-field results presented here align well with theoretical predictions. In addition, we briefly study on the effect of solid–solid anisotropy on the groove root position. We anticipate that the simulated liquid groove and its precise measurement will serve as important tools for studying the relative energies of grain boundaries
