Gently Sloped and Extended Classification Margin for Overconfidence Relaxation of Out-of-Distribution Samples
Recently, machine learning models are expected to be capable of detecting out-of-distribution (OOD) samples for safe use. However, the existing OOD detection methods have limitations. Post hoc calibration techniques used for OOD detection during the inference phase suffer from slow inference and low OOD detection accuracy because pretrained classifiers were not originally designed for this task. Training-phase methods require auxiliary data, entail slow training, and result in a decrease in classification accuracy. To address these issues, this article proposes jointly employing discriminative representation learning through angular margin loss and weight regularization during neural network training. Angular margin loss extends the classification margin, whereas weight regularization ensures a gently sloped margin in the learned embedding space. By constructing a classification margin that is both gently sloped and enlarged, the proposed approach mitigates the overconfidence of OOD samples and overcomes the shortcomings of previous methods. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art detectors in identifying OOD samples without any side effects.

Joint Optimization of Power Control and LSFD Coefficients for Uplink Cell-Free Massive MIMO in Weak Channel Hardening Environments
There have been extensive studies on performance analysis and/or system design for the uplink cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) based on the Use-and-then-Forget (UatF) bound. The tightness of the UatF bound is, however, ensured in channel environments where the channel hardening manifests. It has been often reported that the channel hardening may not always be strongly observed in some channel environments. In such cases, the UatF bound seriously underestimates rates for users experiencing weak channel hardening. To address the issues associated with the UatF bound, we develop a new lower bound offering a more accurate estimate of the achievable rate for uplink in CF-mMIMO networks regardless of the extent of channel hardening. The claim is substantiated by applying the proposed bound to the joint optimization of power control and large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) coefficients for the design of CF-mMIMO networks on spatially correlated Rician fading channels. To facilitate the optimization, we also develop an approximation of the proposed bound in a more computationally amenable form. We conduct extensive performance evaluations and comparisons for CF-mMIMO networks designed with the proposed and UatF bounds. The comparisons highlight that the design based on the proposed bound leads to considerable performance improvement in the fairness. In addition, for the first time, we reveal with the new lower bound that an widely held belief based on the UatF bound is incorrect.
Silicon nanocolumn-based disposable and flexible ultrasound patches
Traditional wearable ultrasound devices pose challenges concerning the rigidity and environmental impact of lead-based piezoelectric materials. This study proposes a silicon nanocolumn capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (snCMUT) array for real-time wearable ultrasound imaging in disposable patches. Using a lead-free design, snCMUT incorporates silicon nanocolumns to address existing issues and achieves high transmission efficiency (220 kPa/V), flexibility, and low power consumption. The specialized structure of snCMUT enhances displacement efficiency, enabling high-resolution imaging while maintaining a thin, flexible form factor (similar to 900 mu m). Phantom imaging demonstrates its superior performance, with high axial and lateral resolutions (0.52 and 0.55 mm) and depth penetration (similar to 70 mm) at low voltage (8.9 V-PP). Upon successful application to monitor both sides of the human carotid arteries, snCMUT offers clear ultrasound images and continuous blood pressure waveform monitoring. This proposed innovation presents significant potential for continuous medical imaging and cardiovascular health assessment, addressing environmental concerns and reducing manufacturing costs (<$20).
The Effectiveness of Digital Trade Agreements: Upholding the Status Quo or Paving the Way Forward?
This study critically examines the effectiveness of key rules of Digital Trade Agreements (DTAs) through a legal analysis of their textual design. Drawing upon theories of behavioural effectiveness of international agreements from International Relations (IR) and international law scholarship, the study analyses how, from the perspective of negotiators and trade policy makers, DTA rules are textually designed to control the extent to which they influence the behaviour of the parties. By analysing DTAs concluded by major digital powers-the United States, the European Union, and China-the study identifies a recurring pattern: in issue areas where regulatory autonomy is prioritized, such as cross-border data flows, data localization, and source code, parties are generally reluctant to adopt legal rules that may significantly affect their domestic regulatory frameworks. This pattern underscores the limited capacity of DTAs, in their current form, to mandate behavioural change beyond the existing regulatory status quo. The key contribution of this research lies in its development of a conceptual framework for defining and assessing the legal effectiveness of DTAs from the perspective of negotiators and policy makers. This framework facilitates the identification of issue areas where effectiveness remains constrained and those not offers practical guidance for negotiators and policy makers in drafting more effective and enforceable commitments. In doing so, the study provides critical insights into how the legal design of DTA rules can be enhanced to achieve their objectives-addressing the challenges posed by regulatory fragmentation in digital trade.
