In Numbers Don’t Lie: 71 Stories to Help Us Understand the Modern World (2020), Vaclav Smil draws on his interdisciplinary background in science, public policy, and history to provide readers with 71 short essays that help us better understand aspects of the world–including its people, environment, energy consumption, and present crises (among other things). In most of his essays, Smil utilizes both data and reasoning with data to shed light on diverse topics, with issues ranging from happiness rankings and vaccine payoffs to chicken production and diesel engines. Though the book arguably has some flaws, its easy-to-digest essays–many of which use tools we often teach in quantitative reasoning courses–provide excellent case studies for instructors to use in the classroom
Design, Fabrication, and Verification of a Robot Leg for Multimodal Locomotion
In robotics, there is a variety of general forms of locomotion for a quadruped. This paper focuses on the design challenges for three of the most common forms: walking, climbing, and swimming. Many robots have been designed that can perform a combination of these modalities with the use of interchangeable parts. However, there is limited research on a design that incorporates the requirements of compliance and robustness for walking on rugged terrain, multiple attachment points for climbing, and sufficient drag properties for swimming and walking through resistive media within a singular leg configuration. In this paper, the design, fabrication, and development of legs for a quadrupedal robot capable of achieving locomotion in all three modalities- walking, climbing, and swimming- without the need for interchangeable parts is presented. The resultant foot design was then tested and verified on a physical platform. Using the presented foot design, the lightweight (8 kg) quadrupedal platform, the Scansorial, Terrestrial, and Aquatic Robot Quadruped (STARQ), was able to accomplish walking at 25 cm s−1 , climbing at speeds up to 15 cm s−1 at slopes up to 70° and up vertical slopes at slower speeds, and swimming at 8.7 cm s−1
Comparing probabilistic planning success on three types of robots: wheeled, legged, and underwater
We compare the relevance of POMDP graphical models to addressing a given common task, the autonomous navigation, in mobile robotics, for robots in three different environments: legged walking, wheeled, and underwater robots. Principled approaches to the implementation of Intelligent robots in realistic environments with uncertainty exploit probabilistic models. The use of graphical models increases tractability and verifiability of probabilistic reasoning. Our robots face similar localization problems of passing by three doors on a corridor in a building, respectively, for the underwater case, of passing by three barrels in a pool. All the three robots are equipped solely with noisy sonars and odometers, a natural restriction for the underwater case, and a significant explanation of the encountered level of uncertainty. POMDP models are proposed. The experiments performed show that when the three robots handle their respective problem, the legged robot has the highest locomotion challenges, while the underwater setting faced the highest level of noise in sensors

Do isomorphic pressures impede greenwashing in hospitality industry? A theoretical framework
Green practices gradually increase in the hospitality industry. However, concerns have grown that there is an inconsistency between the environmental practices announced by the organizations and the practices they actually implement. Therefore, the phenomenon of greenwashing has become a common concern in the hospitality industry. This study aims to develop a theoretical framework to be used in explaining the mechanisms to prevent greenwashing. For this purpose, the role of isomorphic pressures in preventing greenwashing and the role of environmental legitimacy motivation in the effect of isomorphic pressures on greenwashing are theorized. The neo-institutional theory was used in the development of the theoretical framework. The theoretical framework can serve as a theoretical lens for future research on greenwashing prevention. Considering that previous studies generally focused on customer perceptions of greenwashing and neglected mechanisms to prevent greenwashing, this study is expected to contribute to the literature
The effect of entrepreneurial traits on career planning in food processing enterprises
Economic, social, and technological changes create new demands and opportunities for people\u27s jobs. Entrepreneurship is one way to deal with these demands and take advantage of new opportunities. Career planning assists an individual in becoming aware of various career options, including entrepreneurial intent. Even if they have all of the necessary resources, not everyone wants to start a new business. Some people have specific entrepreneurial characteristics that motivate them to pursue a career investing in new businesses. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of individuals\u27 entrepreneurial traits on their career planning. The survey technique was used to collect data from 305 randomly selected employees of food processing enterprises operating in Konya, in Turkey. Descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, and linear regression techniques were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that entrepreneurial traits influence individuals\u27 career planning. This result suggests that both individuals\u27 entrepreneurial traits should be enhanced, and they should be encouraged to pursue a career in starting a new business
Smart destination from the perspective of tourism academics: A model proposal for Ayvalik
In addition to the changes in human life with technological developments, there are new developments in many sectors in terms of conducting business and experiencing it by the consumer. In the tourism sector, the concepts of smart tourism and smart destinations have emerged with the effect of technological developments. In this context, policies are produced and tried to be implemented in order to realize smart tourism applications by providing a smart development in destinations. Thus, it becomes possible to identify the needs, wishes and expectations of tourists and local people in order to improve the living conditions of tourists and local people and to enrich their experiences by eliminating the problems experienced at critical points of the destination. In this study, the smart destination potential of Ayvalık, which is an important destination of Balıkesir province, was investigated. The main purpose of the research is to create a model for smart applications that will increase the quality of life of the local people and the satisfaction levels of tourists coming to the destination and make their lives easier by making Ayvalık suitable for technology. In the research, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 9 tourism academicians who participated in the Ayvalık Vision Workshop held at the Cunda Practice Hotel on 13-15 January 2023, using the interview technique, one of the qualitative research methods. The findings are presented directly to the reader. With the study, the perspective of tourism academics; The current status of smart tourism applications in Ayvalık destination, the strategies to be followed in order to become a smart destination, the organizational structure that needs to be created, the current status of being a smart destination (SWOT Analysis), financing resources for become a smart destination and responsibilities of stakeholders in this way have been tried to be determined. It has been determined that the current situation of Ayvalık as a smart destination is not adequate, and there are only a few applications carried out by Ayvalık Municipality and Ayvalık Tourism Development Association for this process. In addition, the strategies that come to the fore in smart destination development of Ayvalık; It has been determined that it should be established in a way to include smart destination components such as smart management, smart environment, smart economy and smart people. Another remarkable finding obtained from the research is that the Smart Destination Management Model should be created with a participatory management approach. Ayvalık Smart Destination Model (ASDM) has been presented in line with the findings obtained in the study.

Turizm akademisyenleri gözüyle akıllı destinasyon: Ayvalık için bir model önerisi
Özet
Teknolojik gelişmelerle beraber insan yaşamında gerçekleşen değişimlerin yanı sıra birçok sektörde, işlerin yürütülmesi ve tüketici tarafından deneyimlenmesi noktasında yeni gelişmeler yaşanmaktadır. Turizm sektöründe de teknolojik gelişmelerin etkisiyle akıllı turizm ve akıllı destinasyon kavramları ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu kapsamda destinasyonlarda akıllı bir gelişim sağlanarak akıllı turizm uygulamalarının gerçekleştirilebilmesi için politikalar üretilerek uygulanmaya çalışılmaktadır. Böylelikle destinasyonun kritik noktalarında yaşanan sorunlar giderilerek turistlerin ve yerel halkın yaşam koşullarının iyileştirilmesi ve deneyimlerinin zenginleştirilmesi için turist ve yerel halkın ihtiyaç, istek, beklentilerinin tespit edilmesi mümkün hale gelmektedir. Bu çalışmada Balıkesir ilinin önemli bir destinasyonu olan Ayvalık’ın akıllı destinasyon potansiyeli araştırılmıştır. Ayvalık’ın teknolojiye uygun hale getirilmesiyle yerel halkın yaşam kalitesini ve destinasyona gelen turistlerin turizm kaynaklı tatmin düzeylerini artıracak, hayatlarını kolaylaştırılacak akıllı uygulamalarla ilgili bir model oluşturulması araştırmanın temel amacıdır. Araştırmada, nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden mülakat tekniği kullanılarak, 13-15 Ocak 2023 tarihlerinde Cunda Uygulama Oteli’nde gerçekleştirilen Ayvalık Vizyonu Çalıştayı’na katılan 9 turizm akademisyeni ile yüz yüze görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular doğrudan okuyucuya sunulmuştur. Yapılan çalışma ile turizm akademisyenlerinin bakış açısı; Ayvalık destinasyonunda akıllı turizm uygulamalarının mevcut durumu, akıllı destinasyon olabilmesi için izlenmesi gereken stratejiler, oluşturulması gereken organizasyon yapısı, akıllı bir destinasyon olmada mevcut durumu (GZFT Analizi), akıllılık için finansman kaynakları ve paydaş sorumlulukları tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Ayvalık’ın akıllı destinasyon olarak mevcut durumunun oldukça yetersiz olduğu, Ayvalık Belediyesi ve Ayvalık Turizm Geliştirme Birliği tarafından bu konuda gerçekleştirilen sadece birkaç uygulama olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca Ayvalık’ın akıllı destinasyon gelişiminde ön plana çıkan stratejilerin; akıllı yönetim, akıllı çevre, akıllı ekonomi, akıllı insan gibi akıllı destinasyon bileşenlerini kapsayacak biçimde oluşturulması gerektiği tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen bir diğer dikkat çekici bulgu ise, katılımcı bir yönetim anlayışıyla Akıllı Destinasyon Yönetim Modeli’nin oluşturulmasının gerektiğidir. Yapılan çalışmada elde edilen bulgular doğrultusunda Ayvalık Akıllı Destinasyon Modeli (AADM) sunulmuştur.

Machine Learning Approaches for Attacking Behaviors in Robot Soccer
In this work, Machine Learning approaches were applied to attacking behaviors in RoboCup Small-Size League autonomous robot soccer. Neural networks were used in order to get a binary prediction of an attacking action’s success, while deep reinforcement learning was leveraged to learn low level skills which control the robot’s wheel speeds and kicker. A trained neural network was used to predict whether a shot would be successful, improving the number of goals scored by the attacking behavior by 84 to 186%. The reinforcement learning methodologies used in this work produced behaviors which were efficient in speed, beating manually programmed behaviors in time taken, but can benefit from future refinements to improve accuracy in shooting towards goal
