Chapter 18 Social Media
At the turn of the century, we were still at the beginning of our journey into this always-on, always-connected world. We still wrote physical letters and sent birthday cards by mail. Phone calls were expensive and video calling was like science fiction. Google and Facebook didn’t exist. You couldn’t download video games on your mobile phone because you didn’t have access to an app store that sold software.
In contrast, just today you might have viewed TikTok videos, checked Instagram, sent a WhatsApp message, liked an author’s tweet, and chatted with your friends on Discord. All before starting your school day. You may not realize it, but the smart-phone-always-on-hand lifestyle has turned us into social media creatures constantly dropping digital breadcrumbs about our lives on the Internet. Without being aware, you may have shared information about your friends, your boss at work, the books you like, your vacation plans, the products you use at home, and even revealed your eagerness to find a partner. These breadcrumbs help companies show you ads for the things you are most interested in. But they also have a dark side. Social media apps—the comsumer-facing applications of the digital world—could potentially hurt your career and relationships. All these possibilities arise from social media apps—the consumer-facing applications of the digital world.
While the benefits of social media are well known, in recent years there is increasing awareness of its potential harms. Several states have passed laws to regulate social media use, and the US Surgeon General has issued an advisory summarizing results from research on social media’s impact on mental health. The Surgeon General’s advisory informs us on large sections of this chapter and is a great resource to augment the information in this chapter. Particularly useful are the links in the advisory to the empirical studies that have looked at the issues we have brought up in this chapter.
Adapting from Carr and Hayes and the advisory from the Surgeon General, we define social media as Internet-based channels that allow users to interact and derive value from user-generated content. The goal of this chapter is to make you more aware of the impact of social media, so you can make the best use of social media in your life and career, while avoiding the pitfalls. For both benefits and risks, we look at both professional and personal aspects
Predictive modeling of cave entrance locations: relationships between surface and subsurface morphology
Cave entrances directly connect the surface and subsurface geomorphology in karst landscapes. Understanding the spatial distribution of these features can help identify areas on the landscape that are critical to flow in the karst groundwater system. Sinkholes and springs are major locations of inflow and outflow from the groundwater system, respectively, however not all sinkholes and springs are equally connected to the main conduit system. Predicting where on the landscape zones of high connectivity exist is a challenge because cave entrances are difficult to detect and imperfectly documented. Wildlife research has a similar issue of understanding the complexities of where a given species is likely to exist on a landscape given incomplete information and presence-only data. Species distribution models can address some of these issues to create accurate predictions of species or event occurrence across the landscape. Here we apply a species distribution model, MaxEnt, to predict cave entrance locations in three geomorphic regions of Kentucky. We built the models with cave locations from the Kentucky Speleological Survey database and landscape predictor variables, including distance from sinkholes, distance from springs, distance from faults, elevation, lithology, slope, and aspect. All three regional models predict cave locations well with the most important variables for predicting cave entrance locations consistent between models. Throughout all three models, sinkholes and springs had the largest influence on the likelihood of cave entrance presence. This unique use of species distribution modeling techniques shows that they are potentially valuable tools to understand spatial patterns of other landscape features that are either ephemeral or difficult to identify using standard techniques
Programming by demonstration using learning based approach: A Mini review
Wheelchair-mounted robotic arms are used in rehabilitation robotics to help physically impaired people perform ADL (Activity of daily living) tasks. However, the dexterity of manipulation tasks makes the teleoperation of the robotic arm challenging for the user, as it is difficult to control all degrees of freedom with a handheld joystick or a screen touch device. PbD (Programming by demonstration) allows the user to demonstrate the desired behavior and enables the system to learn from the demonstrations and adapt to a new environment. This learned model can perform a new set of actions in a new environment. Learning from a demonstration includes Object identification and recognition, trajectory planning, Obstacle avoidance, and adapting to a new environment, wherever necessary. PbD using a learning-based approach learns the task through a model that captures the underlying structures of the task. The model can be a probabilistic graphical model, a neural network, or a combination of both. PbD with learning can be generalized and applied to new situations as this method enables the robot to learn the model rather than just memorizing and imitating the demonstration. In addition to this, it also helps in efficient learning with a reduced number of demonstrations. This survey focuses on an overview of the recent machine learning techniques used with PbD to perform dexterous manipulation tasks that enable the robot to learn from and apply it to a new set of tasks and a new environment
Towards A Mobile Ad-Hoc Mesh Network Establishing Emergency Drone System
A drone based mobile ad-hoc mesh network for emergency communications is discussed. The in-progress project seeks to improve emergency and disaster area communication systems by creating a mobile, ad-hoc wireless network with an array of microcomputers, a GPS receiver, IMU, network adapter and drone. The Linux based platform includes network management, data collection, and integration with visualization. The expected outcome of this project is the establishment of a wireless mesh network capable of self-healing to support emergency response
Flexible Magnetic Skin Sensor Array for Torsion Perception
Prosthetic hands help upper limb amputees and people who were born without hands. Currently, these prostheses are rather rudimentary and do not provide adequate sensing capabilities compared to a human hand. People use their natural hands to perceive complex tactile phenomena such as shear and torsion using thousands of mechanoreceptors in their fingertips. The capability to detect torsional loads at the fingertips is a notable gap in prosthetic hand sensation. Flexible tactile sensors are a promising new technology that would be ideal for prosthetic hands since they allow for stretching and movement like human skin without damage to the sensor. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine whether a flexible magnetic sensor array combined with an artificial neural network (ANN) can detect and classify torsion. The flexible magnetic sensor is designed as a 3x3 array of magnets embedded in a stretchable elastomer which are situated atop a corresponding array of Hall effect sensors. Torques applied to the soft magnetic skin caused displacement of the magnetic fields that were perceived by the nine Hall effect sensors. In this study, ten different values of torque were applied to the flexible magnetic sensor array using a robotic arm to ensure consistency. Data were used to train an ANN to classify the applied torques. The ANN was trained ten times and could predict the applied torque with an average training classification accuracy of 97.48% ± 0.33%. Given the results of this study, this novel sensor design could enable more refined sensations of touch for people who use prosthetic hands
Value creation and employee branding through employees: A model proposal for hotel businesses
Employees hold a great responsibility in conveying the brand equity elements of the business and the brand equity as a whole to consumers. In an intense and destructive competitive environment, it is a necessity for businesses that differ from their competitors with their brand strategy to reflect it with their employees in order to set an entire brand value proposition. Hotel businesses can achieve differentiation primarily through employee branding as pivotal. This paper explains the situation and significance of the labor factor, whose importance has increased much more in the brand equity of hotel businesses. It explains how hotel businesses create employee branding, and which elements create employee branding in hotel businesses. The study was created as a literature review and was prepared in a theoretical framework. In this context, the literature was examined and the elements that make up the employee branding in hotel businesses were determined depending on the literature, and an exemplary model that can be applied in practice by hotel businesses has been developed
The effect of sound atmosphere on emotion from a travel motivation perspective
Travel constitutes the dynamic structure of tourism. It is not possible to speak of tourism without travel activity. Since travel motivation is known as a psychological driver of a certain tourism behavior, it is extensively studied in tourism research. The travel motivations of people have changed in the historical course. Accordingly, a change is observed in the quality of the tourism market. It is important to know the changing travel motivations in order to survive in the tourism market where there is intense competition between businesses and destinations and to get more shares from the market. In this study, the effect of the soundscape of Fethiye city of Muğla, which is a medium-sized tourism destination in Turkey, on the mood of the tourists was examined within the framework of the travel motivation of the tourists. Within the scope of the study, a questionnaire was applied to 1320 tourists. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) was used to measure the tourist\u27 moods. Moreover, there are also questions prepared to determine the travel motivations of tourists. It is known that the soundscape affects the relations of the tourists with the environment they are in and overall tourist satisfaction. From this point of view, in this study, it is suggested that the soundscape of tourism destinations should be kept under control and well-designed in order to ensure tourist satisfaction. In addition, determining the tourists’ travel motivation will be effective in the strategic decisions of the tourism stakeholders. In this direction, it is aimed to increase the quality of tourism service by offering suggestions to stakeholders, as well as to contribute to regional development and the national economy.

Seyahat motivasyonu perspektifinden ses atmosferinin duygu durumuna etkisi

Evaluation of COVID-19 crisis management practices in the context of city hotels: The case of Aksaray
This study examines the extent to which city hotels operating in Aksaray are affected by the COVID-19 crisis, what strategy the managers follow in the face of this situation, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of operating as a city hotel and being located in Aksaray. Since no similar study was found in the region as a result of the literature review, it is thought that the study will contribute to the literature. The research data were obtained by semi-structured interview technique from 14 managers who worked as general manager, department manager and department chief in city hotels operating in Aksaray between December 1 2022 and December, 30 2022. The study of Türkay, Şengül and Genç (2017) was used in the creation of the interview form prepared within the scope of the research. The findings indicate that city hotels operating in Aksaray province were adversely affected by the crisis and that they had deficiencies in crisis management and planning. In order to reduce the effects of the crisis, it has been stated that work is generally carried out to reduce costs and increase service quality. It has been found that city hotels managers perceive operating in Aksaray as an advantage in terms of location and a disadvantage in terms of lack of social opportunities.

Climate of a cave laboratory representative for rock art caves in the Vézère area (south-west France)
Leye Cave (Dordogne, France) is a laboratory cave in the Vézère area, a region that contains some of the most famous rock art caves in the world such as Lascaux, Font-de-Gaume and Combarelles, and is listed as Human World Heritage by UNESCO. Leye Cave was selected because it is representative of painted caves, with respect to parameters such as its geological stage, the presence of water and carbon dioxide, the geological state of its walls, and the size of the cave. These wall states are studied to better understand the conditions of conservation of rock art caves without damaging them. The choice of an equivalent medium, i.e., a non-painted cave, was made to be able to conduct experiments or take measurements that would not have been possible in a rock art cave. The climatic conditions (temperature, hygrometry, etc.) monitored since 2011 are central to our understanding of the genesis and evolution of wall states. Leye Cave is sub-horizontal then descendant, forming a cold air trap. The phenomenon of condensation is thought to be important in the genesis of these wall states. Our article presents a model which describes the competition that exists between the conduction of the rock heating the air and the convection cooling the rock, in the area named the “Throne Chamber”, located in the deepest parts of the cave
GNSI Decision Brief: A Lasting Peace to the Russo-Ukraine War: Obstacles and Considerations
When the current conflict between Ukraine and Russia started in 2014, with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and support of separatists in the Donbas, negotiated settlements failed to bring peace. Both Minsk agreements of 2014 and 2015 did little to return to pre-war conditions and instead created a frozen conflict that reignited with Russia’s invasion in February of 2022. With that recent failure, how will opposing Russian and Ukrainian perspectives limit the success of any settlement to the conflict? Each of the belligerents in the current war in Ukraine has a distinct perspective regarding their nation’s origins, historical experiences, and national identity. These perspectives will influence the peace process and shape the post-war order while largely determining whether this war ends definitively or simply pauses for a time before breaking out again. A lasting peace would be in the interest of the US and its allies in Europe. The obstacles that could block a negotiated settlement and how the key players might overcome them for a lasting peace will be examined below.https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/gnsi_decision_briefs/1002/thumbnail.jp
