    Automated and assisted identification of stroke using feature-based brain imaging

    Provided herein are systems and methods for automated identification of volumes of interest in volumetric brain images using artificial intelligence (AI) enhanced imaging to diagnose and treat acute stroke. The methods can include receiving image data of a brain having header data and voxel values that represent an interruption in blood supply of the brain when imaged, extracting the header data from the image data, populating an array of cells with the voxel values, applying a segmenting analysis to the array to generate a segmented array, applying a morphological neighborhood analysis to the segmented array to generate a features relationship array, where the features relationship array includes features of interest in the brain indicative of stroke, identifying three-dimensional (3D) connected volumes of interest in the features relationship array, and generating output, for display at a user device, indicating the identified 3D volumes of interest

    Multifunctional porous materials for water purification and remediation

    A variety of compositions and materials are provided for water purification and remediation. The compositions including multiple functionalities for treating a variety of pollutants or contaminants. The compositions can include a porous organic polymer with one or more of a variety of functional groups for binding the contaminants and with a hierarchical pore size distribution over a range of pore sizes to facilitate enhanced removal of the contaminants. Functional groups can include one, two, or more different functional groups such as amines, halides, ammoniums, pyridiuiums, thiols, imidazoliums, salts thereof, or others. The range of pore sizes can be about 1 nm to 10 nm or more. Contaminants can include antimony, arsenic, barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, selenium, technetium, thallium, uranium, radium, urea, and phosphate. Methods of removing the contaminants from water using the compositions are also provided

    Teaching mathematics to all learners by tapping into indigenous legends: A pathway towards inclusive education

    This study explored the use of Indigenous storytelling in the planning and teaching of mathematical content. In collaboration with Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators, a culturally inclusive mathematical lesson was developed, implemented, and reviewed in an elementary school in Northern Ontario. This study used a culturally authentic approach to address the current educational issue of diversity within the Ontario curriculum and education system. The results of this study suggested that utilizing Indigenous storytelling for teaching mathematical curricular expectations could benefit both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Storytelling can allow students to relate abstract mathematical concepts to their own lived experiences, to be exposed to diverse cultures, and to foster a positive and open learning environment that is conducive to academic and non-academic learning

    Exploring Bhutanese primary school teachers’ technological knowledge

    The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the normal functions of schools globally. Online learning is a new concept in Bhutan. Nonetheless, classes have begun using various online learning platforms to continue their operations during the pandemic. This study examined primary school teachers’ perceived information technology knowledge and proficiency. The participants of this study consisted of 124 primary teachers from two western districts of Bhutan. Data were collected using an online survey. The study’s findings suggested that although the majority of participants (98.2%) had access to personal digital devices, slow internet connection and high internet data subscription charges (60.7%) were cited as significant challenges. Findings also revealed that a small percentage of the participants, less than 12 (9.7%) teachers in this study preferred to teach entirely in an online learning environment. The results of multiple linear regression suggested that only technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK) [t = 2.68, p = .008, β = .236] and perceived information technology proficiency of teachers (PITP) [t = 3.55, p = .001, β = .306] were statistically significant predictors of technological knowledge (TK)

    Supporting Children and Families Impacted by Incarceration Through Multicultural Children\u27s Literature

    Our chapter focuses on children with a family member who is incarcerated or in the criminal justice system. United States’ prisons maintain mass incarceration rates, where people of color are incarcerated at higher rates. It is important to note that children with a parent who is incarcerated are more likely to be incarcerated. We begin the chapter with a rationale on why it is important for teachers to develop an understanding and awareness of this population, discussing the effect and importance of teaching children with parents who are incarcerated. Then, we offer a historical perspective centered around race/ethnicity and gender. In the chapter, we provide reflection questions and suggestions for children’s literature to utilize in the classroom related to this issue. Finally, we offer other resources for pre-service and in-service teachers to learn more about families and children who are affected by incarceration

    An Analysis of Pedestrian Focused Transportation Systems on the USF Tampa Campus

    Pedestrian-focused transportation policies and infrastructure on college campuses is dependent on usability, safety, and the connection to surrounding areas. To do this, I asked two questions: 1) how the multimodal transportation network on University of South Florida’s (USF) Tampa campus functions in regards to usability and safety, 2) how do the policies for pedestrian-focused transportation and infrastructure at USF’s Tampa campus compare to the immediate surrounding area? I used document analysis, observations, and a survey to examine the pattern between usability, safety, and policies in regards to the multimodal transportation network. I found that the relationship between usability and safety in the transportation network largely depended on the policies in place and the influence from the surrounding area. In conclusion, the pedestrian focused transportation system on the USF Tampa campus is inadequate based on usability and safety due to the influence of the surrounding car centric transportation systems

    Keith Amos Bowen Oral History Interview

    In this interview, Keith Bowen, a third generation Florida commercial fisherman, recalls how he spent his childhood fishing with his family, his experience with commercial fishing, and various fishing trips. Born in 1984 in Sebastian, Florida, Keith began clamming with his father in Port Saint John from a very early age. In his mid-twenties he bought his own boat and started commercial fishing from Destin all the way down to Palm Beach. Throughout the interview, Keith describes fishing techniques, equipment, popular fishing locations and the types of fish he usually targets. He also shares his opinion regarding the current fishing laws and the changes he has seen in the fishing industry
