Motivations of participants in charity run
Running for sport has become more popular over the years as part of participatory sporting events. Running events are held in many parts of the world and at different distances including charity runs. The aim of this research is to examine the motivations of charity run participants from the perspectives of physical activity and benevolence. The sample of the research consists of the participants who have taken part as a charity runner of Adım Adım, an organization promoting charity runs in Turkey. In order to reveal the motivations of participants charity runs, online interviews were conducted with 22 charity runners. Content analysis was applied to the collected primary data. The findings indicate that motivations of charity run participants are participation in sports, socialization, the desire to have a healthy life (physical and mental), escape, sufficiency, have fun and enjoy, reference group and benevolence.

Yardımseverlik koşularına katılım güdüleri
Özet
Spor amaçlı koşmak, katılımlı spor etkinliklerinin bir parçası olarak yıllardır daha popüler hale gelmiştir. Nitekim yardımseverlik koşuları da dahil olmak üzere dünyanın birçok yerinde ve farklı mesafelerde koşu etkinlikleri gerçekleştirilmektedir. Hem fiziksel aktivitenin, hem de yardımseverliğin bir arada olduğu, yardımseverlik koşularına katılım güdüleri bu araştırmanın amacını oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemi; Türkiye’de yardımseverlik koşularını tanıtmak ve yaygınlaştırmak amacıyla kurulan ilk sivil toplum oluşumu ve bir sosyal girişimcilik örneği olan Adım Adım aracılığıyla yardımseverlik koşusu yapmış kişilerden oluşmaktadır. Yardımseverlik koşularına katılım güdülerinin ortaya çıkarmak amacıyla, 22 kişi ile çevrim içi görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Görüşmelerde elde edilen birincil verinin içerik analizi yapılarak, araştırmanın bulgularına erişilmiştir. Araştırma sonucuna göre yardımseverlik koşularına katılım güdüleri; spor yapma, sosyalleşme, sağlıklı bir yaşam sürdürme arzusu (fiziksel ve zihinsel), kaçış, yeterlilik, eğlenmek ve keyif almak, referans grubu, yardımseverlik ve Adım Adım’a bağlılık olarak belirlenmiştir.

Implementing Nonelinear Control of a Six Degree of Freedom Robotic Arm on a Raspberry Pi 3
This paper covers techniques of implementing model-based dynamic control on an educational dexterous robotic manipulator with respect to the challenges of achieving and/or exceeding targeted sampling time. The frequency of a control loop is vitally important to the performance of a closed-loop system. For multidimensional systems, like robotic manipulators, obtaining a sufficiently high control loop frequency is especially important since nonlinear control algorithms are usually developed without regard to a finite sampling time. Implementing these nonlinear control algorithms can therefore be notably challenging, especially implementing them on small single-board computers that have limited processing power, like the Raspberry Pi 3. Key elements contributing to the sampling time of a control loop include reading in sensor data, evaluating error of the system, computing the control law, and writing actuator values. All these processes must be completed in the control loop. Furthermore, a lower bound on the loop rate of 20 Hz is generally sought after in order to achieve smooth motion. The main concern with achieving this minimum sampling rate is the computational time required to calculate the typically large terms required for nonlinear robotic control of high degree-of-freedom (DOF) systems while simultaneously handling the large amount of input/output associated with a dexterous robot. This paper describes how the kinematics and dynamics of a robotic system can be computed sufficiently fast, in an interpreted language like Python, by performing the large computations with compiled C code and by offloading many input/output tasks to smaller dedicated microcontrollers. Timing results from actual implementation of nonlinear Independent Joint Control, and a Computed-Torque transposed Jacobian Task Space Controller on a dexterous 6-DOF robotic system are presented
Bruce Bartlett Oral History Interview
This is an oral history of Bruce Bartlett as part of the Hollinswood Ranch Oral History Collection. Bartlett describes his relationship with Dixie Hollins and his father, Maurice Hollins. He describes his participation in hunting trips on the 1500-acre ranch, imbuing a sense of gun safety in his children, and making his first kill ever on the ranch during his youth. The Development, Validation, and Standardization of a New Tool: The Dyscalculia Test
This paper describes a study that focused on developing, validating and standardizing a dyscalculia test, henceforth called the Dyscalculia Test. Out of the 4,758,800 students in Nigeria\u27s upper primary and junior secondary schools, l randomly drew a sample of 2340 students, using a multistage sampling procedure that applied various sampling techniques. For data collection, I used the Test of General Reasoning Ability and Paper 1 of the Mathematics Achievement Test section of the 2021 National Common Entrance Examination, as well as the Dyscalculia Test introduced in this paper, which was developed and standardized in stages. My analysis shows that the Dyscalculia Test items effectively zero in on three components: number sense, arithmetic operation, and working memory. Based on my findings, I recommend that school administrators and counselors adopt the Dyscalculia Test to assess students who may be having difficulty in mathematics and arithmetic for proper diagnosis
Teaching Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in a Pandemic
Teaching Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) has become increasingly more common in the American school system, and many districts have adopted curricula or strategies to promote its usage. Research has continued to show that students receive various short- and long-term benefits when SEL is taught in the classroom. However, the COVID-19 pandemic changed how SEL instruction was given, and the implications are far-reaching. The purpose of this study is to describe the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on how SEL was taught. In addition, the study identifies challenges and possible solutions to ensure that SEL is taught during incredibly challenging circumstances
Security-Enhanced Serial Communications
Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are widely used by critical infrastructure and are ubiquitous in numerous industries including telecommunications, petrochemical, and manufacturing. ICS are at a high risk of cyber attack given their internet accessibility, inherent lack of security, deployment timelines, and criticality. A unique challenge in ICS security is the prevalence of serial communication buses and other non-TCP/IP communications protocols. The communication protocols used within serial buses often lack authentication and integrity protections, leaving them vulnerable to spoofing and replay attacks. The bandwidth constraints and prevalence of legacy hardware in these systems prevent the use of modern message authentication and integrity techniques, such as those provided by Transport Layer Security (TLS). Our approach seeks to address the challenges of providing authentication to serial communications while keeping the existing serial communications bus in place and adding minimal hardware. Here we demonstrate the integration of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) on the bus to inject message authentication codes into an out-of-band (OOB) communications channel, leveraging Power Line Communication (PLC) techniques. Our results show that simple solutions can be integrated into existing serial communications to provide necessary security features in critically important systems. The presented solution is inexpensive, scales well, is modular and extensible, and has low temporal overhead. Providing authenticated serial communications for critical infrastructure systems will improve their ability to resist cyber attacks
What Senior U.S. Leaders Say We Should Know About Cyber
On April 6, 2023, the Atlantic Council’s Cyber Statecraft Initiative hosted a panel discussion on the new National Cybersecurity Strategy. The panel featured four senior officials from the Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD), the Department of State (DoS), the Department of Justice (DoJ), and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The author attended and asked each official to identify the most important elements that policymakers and strategists must understand about cyber. This article highlights historical and recent struggles to express cyber policy, the responses from these officials, and the author’s ongoing research to improve national security cyber policy
