GIS use and Land Conflict in Rwanda: Case of Gasabo District

    No full text
Land conflicts in Rwanda have been exacerbated by demographic boom, land scarcity, and social and political instability. Therefore, Rwanda adopted Geographical Information System (GIS) to empower existing traditional land demarcation in order to defuse land conflict. The aim of this research is to investigate and seek the effectiveness of GIS application and Land Information System (LIS) to land-based conflict with a special focus on Gasabo District and the challenges related to that. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to collect and analyse data. Besides, the research used purposive sampling techniques in getting access to potential respondents of a sample of 30 land surveyors and land officers at Gasabo District. The study found that (1) GIS is important to solve the issues of land conflict especially on the point of land demarcation and zoning; (2) the applicability of GIS and LIS (Land Information System) solved an average of 61.1% of the total land related disputes from 2015 to 2019. However, the challenges were that the pre implementation of GIS period was characterized by lack of a legal and political framework for land use, reform and ownership especially considering a number of people who were deprived of their land due to the history of the country. In terms of value distribution of land through GIS, there is a need to take into consideration land price information and zoning with typical characteristics of spatial distribution of use (commercial, residential, and industrial)

Toward a Social Justice Emphasis in Preservice Teachers’ Inquiries in Small Liberal Arts Contexts

    No full text
Scholars underscore the need to study core features and outcomes of preservice teacher (PST) inquiry. This qualitative study identifies facilitation as a key feature, and a social justice inquiry stance as an important outcome. The author analyzed PST inquiry reports from a graduate-level course, noting that fewer than half of the reports were focused on social justice and, despite a weak program emphasis, PSTs were adopting this inquiry stance. Analysis of student feedback surveys and instructor notes revealed that providing clear and structured processes, consistent written feedback, and frequent meetings with facilitator and peers were effective facilitation strategies. Additional strategies include teaching research skills prior to the teacher inquiry semester, building more collaboration opportunities, and a program-wide focus on social justice. The author asserts that these strategies could ease reported PST challenges and provides recommendations for developing and sustaining social justice-focused PST inquiry in small liberal arts teacher education programs

Combining Frameworks to Improve Military Health System Quality and Cybersecurity

    No full text
Existing conceptual frameworks and commercially available technology could be considered to rapidly operationalize the use of Quality Measures (QM) within military health systems (Costantino et al. 2020). Purchased healthcare as well as digital healthcare services have paved the way for data collection from multiple information systems thus offering stakeholders actionable intelligence to both guide and measure healthcare outcomes. However, the collection of data secondary to Smart Devices, disparate information systems, cloud services, and the Internet of Medical Things (IOMT) is a complication for security experts that also affect clients, stakeholders, organizations, and businesses delivering patient care. We have combined three conceptual frameworks: (1) Donabedian’s Quality Attributes Framework (DQA), (2) The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) framework, and the (3) Healthcare and Public Health (HPH) Cybersecurity Framework (HCF). Each of these frameworks is well-tested, widely accepted, and referenced as the gold standard in delivering quality care (DQA and NAM) and cybersecurity (HCF) for healthcare. Separately, each framework provides long-used analysis, guidance, and application of quality reliable measures of healthcare services. The combined frameworksmay enhance data integrity (collection and standardized safety of data in regard to regulatory compliance). The combined frameworks also support identifying gaps in quality of care, support the prioritization of cost-effective methodologies that predictably improve patient outcomes, and support DHA’s quality measures. Finally, we offer the importance of understanding the components of quality measures in a more precise manner while maintaining information technology (IT) governance compliance

    Chapter 11 Email

    No full text
Email is the method of sending, receiving, and organizing messages using a computer. Barely a few decades ago, the only way to send messages and documents was to mail them physically at the post office (or use courier services like FedEx and UPS). Email transformed the way we communicate. It allows us to send and receive messages and documents instantaneously, regardless of the physical location of the sender or the receiver. Along with services like instant messaging and video calling, email spurred global e-commerce by breaking geographical barriers and allowing friends and family to stay in touch on a day-to-day basis for little to no cost. To mail a letter through the postal service, you needed to write the letter or take a printout of the letter, put it in an envelope, attach stamps, and write the mailing address on the envelope. If you have access to a smart phone or computer, email is much easier. You only need to know the email address of the person you want to email, then type the message, and include any documents you want to attach to the message. Clicking the “Send” button will instantly transfer the email from your inbox to the receiver’s inbox, while you continue to work on your computer. Email is critical for students and adults in the modern world. As a high schooler, you probably receive important notifications from your school and are required to submit assignments through email. These days, most job applications are sent and received through email because email not only helps deliver information and documents but also serves as a permanent record of your interactions. When you shop online for clothes or use food delivery services, you may get an email or a text message that you can refer to for details or in case of a disagreement with the other party. A critical feature of email compared to instant messaging is that emails are stored in virtual mailboxes, and have the advantage of never getting lost, unless deleted deliberately. In most cases, depending on your email provider, you will be able to restore even deleted messages from the Trash folder for a period of time

Assistive Robotic Platform for Non‐Urgent Household Tasks: A New Design

    No full text
Humans overcome minor household inconveniences daily without fully recognizing how challenging these tasks could be for individuals such as elderly people or people with disabilities. Those people often times struggle to complete tasks, for instance opening a door or reaching for an item, leading them to rely on caregivers for help. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this caregiver support becomes an unsafe and unreliable solution that can result in a greater risk, thus the need for another solution arises: robotic technology. Recent developments in the robotics field have paved the way for this research, aiming to design a home assistance robot with capabilities to complete the basic household tasks. The designed robotic platform features four mecanum wheels that support a platform base, a lift mechanism, and a robotic arm. The omni-directional movement of the wheels is controlled by four DC motors, which allow the robotic platform to navigate to its commanded location. Further, the lift mechanism is controlled by a stepper motor vertically to adjust the robotic arm based on the requested height. The six-link robotic arm is used for manipulation tasks. The designed robot has a central computer that utilizes MATLAB and Simulink for the developed algorithms. The designed robotic platform’s capabilities can include autonomous navigation, object fetching, as well as face detection to interact with users. With these capabilities, the robot can aid elderly and disabled individuals in need of home assistance. Ultimately, this unique platform can drastically improve conditions for those who cannot independently perform household tasks. These activities are part of a larger effort to establish custom robotic platforms for helping people with non‐urgent tasks in household environments

APALACHICOLA VALLEY ARCHAEOLOGY Volumes 1 and 2 SUPPORTING DATA on USF Digital Commons website

    No full text
The tables of data, maps, and explanatory sections presented here support the archaeological interpretations in the two volumes of Apalachicola Valley Archaeology, which is published by the University of Alabama Press in 2024. These detailed data were too lengthy to include in the books, but are crucial for understanding the archaeological conclusions and, I hope, useful for further archaeological work in the research region of the Apalachicola-Lower Chattahoochee valley of northwest Florida, southeast Alabama, and southwest Georgia. Tables are numbered according to corresponding book volume and chapter; those in the first group, as well as the appendices, pertain to both volumes. I hope readers will let me know of any questions, corrections, additional research and updates in the region
