Activating 2D MoS2 by loading 2D Cu–S nanoplatelets for improved visible light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, drug degradation, and CO2 reduction
Finding reliable photocatalysts capable of driving reactions using only sunlight is more needed than ever. A variety of strategies to harvest sunlight and convert it into chemical energy have been successfully utilized such as synthesizing nanostructures, using metal nanoparticles, doping, and others. In this work, we discover a facile way to anchor CuS nanoplatelets on 2D MoS2 by the solvothermal method using ethylene glycol (EG) as both a reduction agent and an exfoliating agent of bulk MoS2. Using CuS as a co-catalysis on MoS2 with their huge surface areas, led to improved photocatalytic activity for three different applications including H2 evolution, CO2 reduction, and endosulfan degradation. Specifically, Cu–S@MoS2 3% nanocomposite produced 9.86 μmol g−1 h−1 of H2, 0.48 μmol g−1 h−1 of CO and full decomposition of endosulfan within 6 h. The Cu-loaded MoS2 nanocomposites were thoroughly characterized by spectroscopic (including synchrotron-based spectroscopy) and microscopic methods to understand the formation of Cu–S during the solvothermal process. Moreover, the role of the EG during the synthetic procedure was revealed experimentally and studied theoretically via DFT simulations.journal articl
A dual composite resin injection molding technique with 3D-printed flexible indices for biomimetic replacement of a missing mandibular lateral incisor
Patients: This case report presents a minimally invasive approach to replace a missing mandibular lateral incisor using a dual-injection molding technique with flowable composite resins. Integrated with a comprehensive digital workflow, this method achieves a structurally and esthetically biomimetic, bi-layered prosthetic solution. A 34-year-old woman with congenital absence of a mandibular lateral incisor was successfully rehabilitated using a direct composite resin-bonded fixed partial denture (RBFPD).
Discussion: Two specialized three-dimensional (3D)-printed flexible indices stabilized by a custom-designed 3D-printed rigid holder were employed to ensure the meticulous injection molding of flowable composite resins formulated to emulate the inherent chromatic gradations between dentin and enamel. The inherent flexibility of the indices, combined with the holder, facilitated accurate and seamless adaptation to the complex morphological features of the dental arch, thereby mitigating the challenges commonly associated with rigid 3D-printed resin indices.
Conclusions: The bilayered direct composite RBFPD using 3D printed flexible indices prepared with a full digital workflow has several advantages over other dental prosthetic solutions, including noninvasiveness, cost-effectiveness, biomimetic esthetics, repairability, and shortened treatment times. Although the initial results are promising, further longitudinal studies with larger patient cohorts are required to confirm the long-term efficacy of this approach.journal articl
Clarifying the Actual Situation of Old-Old Adults with Unknown Health Conditions and Those Indifferent to Health Using the National Health Insurance Database (KDB) System
Background/Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the actual situation of individuals with unknown health conditions (UHCs) and those indifferent to health (IH) among old-old adults (OOAs) aged 75 years and above using the National Health Insurance Database (KDB) system. Methods: A total of 102 individuals with no history of medical examinations were selected from the KDB system in a city in Japan. Data were collected through home visit interviews and blood pressure monitors distributed by public health nurses (PHNs) from Community Comprehensive Support Centers (CCSCs). The collected data included personal attributes, health concern levels, and responses to a 15-item OOA questionnaire. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven PHNs. The control group consisted of 76 users of the “Kayoinoba” service (Kayoinoba users: KUs). Results: Of the 83 individuals who could be interviewed, 50 (49.0%) were classified as UHCs and 11 (10.8%) were classified as IH, including 5 from the low health concern group and 6 who refused to participate. In the word cloud generated from the PHNs’ interviews, the words and phrases “community welfare commissioner”, “community development”, “blood pressure monitor”, “troublesome”, “suspicious”, and “young” were highlighted. In the comparison of health assessments between UHCs and KUs, “body weight loss” and “cognitive function” were more prevalent among KUs, and “smoking” and “social participation” were more prevalent among UHCs. Conclusions: The home visit activities of CCSCs utilizing the KDB system may contribute to an understanding of the actual situation of UHCs, including IHs, among OOAs. UHCs (including patients with IH status) had a higher proportion of risk factors related to smoking and lower social participation than KUs.doctoral thesi
Effects of electrical stimulation of the lower extremities on postprandial hyperglycemia and arterial stiffness
[Purpose] To compare the acute effects of electrical stimulation (ES) of the lower extremities on postprandial hyperglycemia and arterial stiffness during oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT).
[Methods] In a randomized crossover study, eight healthy young men completed three experimental trials in which they underwent ES for 30 min, starting 60 min before (Before) or 30 min after (After) ingesting 75 g of glucose; ES was not performed in the control trial (Control). The subjects’ blood glucose levels and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) were measured as an index of arterial stiffness at baseline and 30, 60, and 120 min after glucose ingestion. Serum insulin levels were measured at baseline and 60 min after glucose ingestion.
[Results] The subjects’ glucose intake led to an increase in their blood glucose concentration in all trials, however, in the After trial, ES resulted in significantly lower blood glucose concentrations at 60 min post glucose ingestion compared to the Control and Before trials. The area under the curve (AUC) of serum insulin concentrations during the OGTT in the After trial was significantly lower than that in the other two trials. Moreover, glucose ingestion did not increase the baPWV, however, 30 min of ES during the postprandial state acutely reduced the baPWV.
[Conclusion] These results suggest that ES is most effective in reducing postprandial hyperglycemia when administered after a meal. Thus, lower extremity ES may be an alternative exercise method to activate postprandial glucose metabolism in healthy individuals.journal articl
Associations of menopausal symptoms with job-related stress and social support in Japanese school teachers
Objectives: Being a school teacher is highly stressful. This study aimed to clarify the prevalence of menopausal symptoms and explore the association between these symptoms and job-related stress among Japanese school teachers.
Study design: A cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected elementary and junior high school teachers in Japan. Data from 284 teachers aged 45–60 years were analyzed.
Main outcome measures: Menopausal symptoms were measured using the Greene Climacteric Scale, and the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire was used to assess job stressors, social support, and job/family satisfaction. Associations between scores on the Greene Climacteric Scale and on the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire, and demographic information were analyzed.
Results: The most common menopausal symptom was “feeling tired or lacking in energy” (reported by 94.4 % of respondents). The total intensity of menopausal, psychological, and somatic symptoms was significantly correlated with the total level of job stress. Moderate correlations were found between depressive symptoms and job stress regarding suitable jobs, job control, and rewarding jobs, while weak correlations were evident between depressive symptoms and job stress regarding quantitative job overload, interpersonal conflict, and poor physical environment. Higher levels of perceived support from supervisors or co-workers and job satisfaction were associated with less severe psychological and somatic symptoms.
Conclusions: Most middle-aged school teachers felt tired or lacking in energy. Higher job-related stress and lower levels of support from supervisors or co-workers were correlated with more severe menopausal symptoms. A supportive work environment and stress management are essential for such teachers.doctoral thesi

Late-Stage Formation of a Sactionine Linkage Enabled by Lossen Rearrangement of Glycyl Hydroxamic Acid
Late-stage formation of a sactionine thioether bond connecting a Gly α-carbon and Cys thiol was achieved by Lossen rearrangement of a glycyl hydroxamic acid (GlyHA) residue in a peptide. Lossen rearrangement allowed conversion of GlyHA within a peptide to an N-acyl iminium equivalent, which subsequently reacted with S-acetamidomethyl Cys (Cys(Acm)) in TFA in the presence of guanidine hydrochloride (Gn·HCl) to yield the desired thioether linkage in the final stage.journal articl
