Mouth breathing reduces oral function in adolescence
Although humans breathe naturally through the nostrils, mouth breathing in children has recently gathered attention. In this study, we hypothesized that tongue function and its related maxillofacial morphology would affect breathing in adolescence. To verify this hypothesis, we examined the association between breathing patterns, including mouth and nasal breathing; oral functions, including tongue motor function; and craniofacial morphology during adolescence, which has not been investigated till date. C3-H, which indicates the anteroposterior position of the hyoid bone in relation to the third cervical vertebra, was significantly smaller in mouth-breathers than in nasal-breathers. Lip-closing force, tongue pressure, and masticatory efficiency were lower in the order of nasal-breathers, oronasal-breathers, and mouth-breathers, and the values for mouth-breathers were significantly lower than those for nasal-breathers. Tongue pressure alone was identified as a significant independent variable, with an odds ratio of 1.063 (95% confidence interval, 1.006–1.123; p < 0.05). Our results indicate a relationship between mouth breathing and the lip-closing force, tongue pressure, and masticatory efficiency, as well as the significance of tongue pressure on mouth breathing in adolescents. The findings highlight the importance of clarifying the pathophysiology of mouth breathing and its underlying causes.doctoral thesi
The noncanonical function of borealin, a component of chromosome passenger complex, promotes glycolysis via stabilization of survivin in squamous cell carcinoma cells
The chromosome passenger complex (CPC) is a kinase complex formed by Aurora B, borealin, survivin and inner centromere protein (INCENP). The CPC is active during mitosis and contributes to proper chromosome segregation via the phosphorylation of various substrates. Overexpression of each CPC component has been reported in most cancers. However, its significance remains unclear, as only survivin is known to confer chemoresistance. This study showed that the overexpression of borealin, a CPC component, stabilized survivin protein depending on its interaction with survivin. Unexpectedly, the accumulation of survivin by borealin overexpression did not affect the well-characterized functions of survivin, such as chemoresistance and cell proliferation. Interestingly, the overexpression of borealin promoted lactate production but not the overexpression of the deletion mutant that lacks the ability to bind to survivin. Consistent with these findings, the expression levels of glycolysis-related genes were enhanced in borealin-overexpressing cancer cells. Meanwhile, the overexpression of survivin alone did not promote lactate production. Overall, the accumulation of the borealin-survivin complex promoted glycolysis in squamous cell carcinoma cells. This mechanism may contribute to cancer progression via excessive lactate production.doctoral thesi

練混ぜは,コンクリートを製造するうえで欠くべからざる重要な操作であるが,練混ぜの現象は複雑で解明が難しい。難しい理由の1つは,練混ぜ途中のコンクリートの物理的指標を計測することは不可能であったためである。著者らは,静電容量型加速度センサを搭載した複数の無線タグを用いて,加速度を同時多点計測するシステムを独自に開発した。強制2軸ミキサ内を流動するコンクリートに伝播する加速度計測に適用し,ブレード周辺のコンクリートの加速度計測を行った。その結果,無線タグは15rpmの回転速度において破損しなく加速度の計測が可能であった。ブレード周辺の加速度は軸の回転速度と一致した。journal articl
Correlation of Factors Influencing Japanese Proficiency Among Undergraduates at Two Sites in Vietnam
The global popularity of the Japanese language has underscored the challenges associated with attaining proficiency in diverse contexts. This cross-sectional study, conducted in 2023, involved 142 undergraduate students across two sites in Vietnam. The investigation aimed to elucidate the factors influencing Japanese language skills, with a particular emphasis on perceived proficiency, study motives, demographic variables, academic factors, self-esteem, and family dynamics. Employing correlation analysis, key determinants linked to Japanese language proficiency were identified, including academic major, age, grade, duration of Japanese language study, English proficiency, and local student status. Notably, listening and speaking skills were reported as the least developed among the four language skills, followed by writing and reading. Motives significantly associated with perceived Japanese proficiency encompassed the aspiration to work using Japanese language and the intention to teach Japanese. Furthermore, motives correlated with perceived speaking and listening skills included interest in manga and anime, communication with people, travel experiences, and a fondness for the Japanese language. These findings provide insights into the factors influencing Japanese proficiency among the targeted students. The implications suggest a need for tailored educational approaches to optimize language learning outcomes, particularly regarding the enhancement of speaking and listening skills.journal articl
Impact of persistent malperfusion syndrome following central repair of acute type A aortic dissection on early outcomes
We investigated impact of persistent malperfusion syndrome (MPS) following central repair of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) on outcomes. Thirty patients who underwent central repair for ATAAD with MPS were included. Patients were divided into two groups : 23 patients without MPS following central repair (No-MPS group) and 7 with MPS (Persistent-MPS group). The mean age was 66.8 ± 9.6 and 59.4 ± 13.4 years in the No-MPS and Persistent-MPS groups, respectively (P = 0.176). Preoperative MPS included the left coronary artery (n = 3), brain (n = 3), abdomen (n = 7), and extremities (n = 11) in the No-MPS group. In the Persistent-MPS group, the right coronary (n = 1), brain (n = 2), abdomen (n = 3), and extremities (n = 5) were observed. In the No-MPS group, one patient died of extensive cerebral infarction (4.3%). In the Persistent-MPS group, 2 patients died of sepsis and multi-organ failure, respectively (28.6%) (P = 0.061). The Persistent-MPS group had more patients requiring hemodialysis than the No-MPS group (P = 0.009). Three patients underwent intestinal resection due to persistent MPS (P < 0.001). Persistent MPS following central repair for ATAAD significantly contributed to outcomes.journal articl
Mismatch between Augmented Reality Navigation Images and Actual Location of a Cauda Equina Tumor : A Case Report
Background : Augmented reality navigation is the one of the navigation technologies that allows computer-generated virtual images to be projected onto a real-world environment. Augmented reality navigation can be used in spinal tumor surgery. However, it is unknown if there are any pitfalls when using this technique. Case presentation : The patient in this report underwent complete resection of a cauda equina tumor at the L2–L3 level using microscope-based augmented reality navigation. Although the registration error of navigation was < 1 mm, we found a discrepancy between the augmented reality navigation images and the actual location of the tumor, which we have called “navigation mismatch”. This mismatch, which was caused by the mobility of the spinal tumor in the dura mater, seems to be one of the pitfalls of augmented reality navigation for spinal tumors. Conclusions : Combined use of intraoperative ultrasound and augmented reality navigation seems advisable in such cases.journal articl
Telenutrition Education Is Effective for Glycemic Management in People with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus : A Non-Inferiority Randomized Controlled Trial in Japan
This study examined the non-inferior efficacy of telenutrition education compared with face-to-face nutrition education in managing glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Participants had T2DM and a glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ranged 6.5–9.5%. Thirty participants were randomly assigned to either the telenutrition or face-to-face nutrition education group. During the 32-week intervention period, the participants received four sessions on nutrition education from a registered dietitian at the hospital. The telenutrition group received remote education via a videoconferencing platform. Face-to-face nutrition education was conducted using paper-based instructions. The main outcome measure was the non-inferiority of HbA1c levels in the telenutrition group compared to the face-to-face nutrition group. The non-inferiority of telenutrition education was considered valid if the intergroup difference in the mean values of the change in HbA1c had a bilateral 95% confidence interval (CI) upper limit below 0.40%. The intergroup difference in the mean HbA1c change from baseline to the fourth nutrition education session was −0.11 (95% CI −0.54–0.32) for both groups. The upper limit of the bilateral 95% CI was 0.32%, which was below the 0.40% non-inferiority margin (non-inferiority test; p = 0.011). Quantitative evaluation of 67Ga-citrate scintigraphy in the management of nephritis
In 67Ga-citrate scintigraphy (Ga-S), visual assessment is used by evaluating renal-uptake comparison with liver and spine and is simple and objective. We adopted the standardized uptake value (SUV) for 67Ga-citrate and proposed two quantitative indices, active nephritis volume (ANV) and total nephritis uptake (TNU). This study clarified the utility of new Ga-S-based quantitative indices in nephritis management. Before SUV measurement, the Becquerel calibration factor of 67Ga-citrate was obtained using a phantom experiment. Seventy patients who underwent SPECT/CT imaging were studied. SUV, ANV, and TNU were calculated using a quantitative analysis software for bone SPECT. SUVmean, ANV, and TNU were analyzed using the (1) threshold method (set 40%) and constant-value method for (2) vertebral SUVmax, and (3) vertebral SUVmean. ROC analysis was used to evaluate SUV, ANV, and TNU diagnostic abilities to distinguish nephritis presence and absence as well as interstitial nephritis (IN) and non-IN. The area under the curve (AUC) for nephritis presence or absence had a good value (0.80) for SUVmean (1), ANV (3), and TNU (3). The AUC for differentiation between IN and non-IN groups had a good value (0.80) for SUVmean (1). Thus, the new Ga-S-based quantitative indices were useful to evaluate nephritis and distinguish IN and non-IN.journal articl
