Phases of the Moon in Noh Plays
Get PDFapplication/pdfThrough its history of over 600 years, Noh has built up a repertory of about 250 plays. At the base of these plays are elemental Japanese aesthetic sentiments toward nature: the four seasons, floras and faunas, wind and water, and in particular, the moon. The moon is referred to in more than 80% of Noh plays in one way or another. The moon in its changing phases sets time, actual or reminiscent. It may symbolize Buddhistic salvation. It may also serve to project various human sentiments. In this paper, I will examine how the Japanese have appreciated the moon as well as how it is delineated in Noh plays through the analysis of play examples where the moon serves as a catalyst for creative expression. While several representative plays are analyzed in depth, the main focus will be placed on Toru (Toru the Nobleman) throughout which the moon runs as a key motif. Through the analyses, I hope to illuminate how the creative expressions of the moon in Noh manifest theatrically the hidden yearning of the Japanese for what may be called 'rapture' or a kind of spiritual salvation.departmental bulletin pape

Predicting Electricity Consumption with Sensors of Home Appliances
Get PDFapplication/pdfHome Energy Management System, HEMS for short, is expected to conserve electric power. In order to realize appropriate energy management and device control by HEMS, it is important to predict future behavior of electricity consumption. Typically, the method of future prediction of electricity consumption is built by using a combination of machine learning and environmental data which is acquired by sensor network. Considering to apply the method to HEMS, we point out that it is difficult to build such a network into a general residence. We thus propose a method to use network-connected home appliances as a sensor network. Environmental data is collected by the network which is composed by ECHONET Lite protocol. Finally, our system outputs models for future prediction of electricity consumption by using machine learning.departmental bulletin pape

Transformation into a Snake in Traditional Japanese Theatres
Get PDFapplication/pdfSnakes and their images have been at the base of the beliefs of the Japanese since prehistoric times. Because of their hideous appearance and eerie behaviors, however, snakes came to be shunned away. With the introduction of the Chinese Ying and Yang Cosmology, Taoism, and Buddhism, furthermore, snakes became gradually hidden behind the philosophical and ritualistic vocabulary of these new foreign beliefs. As a dynamic symbol of the energy and cycle of life, the beliefs in snake power has remained in the undercurrent in the life of the Japanese, notably in pretty much all regional festivals and rituals surrounding one's birth and death, climaxing in a theatrical expression of transformation into a snake. In this paper, we will examine how the Japanese beliefs in snake power are manifested. First we will seek images of snakes in our daily life, and rituals and ceremonies. Second, we will examine how the snake beliefs are manifested in theatrical expressions exemplified particularly by Noh Dôjôji (The Dôjôji Temple) and Kabuki Musume Dôjôji (The Maiden at the Dôjôji Temple). Through these analyses, we hope to confirm that the Japanese beliefs in snake power continue to thrive and support the life of the Japanese.departmental bulletin pape
Current state and problems of child-rearing support for Newcomer parents and children in nursery schools
Get PDFapplication/pdf[Purpose] This study explored how the childcarers in Japanese nursery schools support parents and children who are from abroad and have long lived in Japan (hereinafter referred to as Newcomers) and discussed the current problems. [Results and Considerations] Interviews with eight childcarers about the support for Newcomers produced the following six categories: “to care for Newcomers when they enter nursery school," “to cooperate with Newcomer parents for their children's comfortable life," “to support Newcomer children's relationships with others," “to cope with Newcomer children's health and developmental problems," “to consider their home background," and “to guide them to enter primary school." Such support is the same as that for the Japanese parents and children, but the childcarers have actually encountered various problems due to the barriers of language and culture. A stronger relationship with Newcomer parents is required, and some systematic backup framework and cooperation with other organizations are also needed.departmental bulletin pape
Photocatalytic oxidation reaction of linoleic acid -- Research works accomplished by using materials analysis facilities: XXVII (1)--
Get PDFapplication/pdfLinoleic acid on rutile TiO2 (001) surface and linoleic acid dispersed with p-25 powder were exposed to UV light and were studied by optical microscope, FT-IR and 1H-NMR. After exposure to UV light, something has visually happened to linoleic acid. From the results of FT-IR and 1H-NMR, -CH=CH- bond was found to be lost because hydrogen next to this bond has almost disappeared. However, the difference between the photocatalytic degradation of -CH=CH- and natural oxidation of linoleic acid was small under FT-IR and 1H-NMR. It was also found that oxygen is needed when linoleic acid degrades by photocatalytic reaction.departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFapplication/pdfSynthesis of Mayenite (Ca12Al14O33) was tried by some sol-gel methods using calcium nitrate tetrahydrate or calcium 2-ethylhexanoate as a calcium source and aluminum-iso-propoxide or aluminum-sec-butoxide as an aluminum source. Atmosphere during sintering affected the synthesis of Ca12Al14O33, The yield of Ca12Al14O33 after sintering in air was higher than that after sintering in O2. It was found that the yield tended to become higher, when using calcium 2-ethylhexanoate synthesized from calcium acetate monohydrate and 2-ethylhexanoic acid and aluminum-iso-propoxide.departmental bulletin pape
Idea contest administration for effective creativity education Case Study: IT Dream Contest 2015
Get PDFapplication/pdfThis study analyzes the impact of the idea contest administration on attendees' creativity improvement using the IT Dream Contest 2015. Recently contests are used as an educational tool to improve students' creativity. Even though both supervisors of the attendees and the contest organizers share the same goal, to improve creativity of the students, usually they do not share information about contest administration to effectively achieve the goal. This study uses attendees' creativity self-evaluation as a means to measure creativity education effect and reveals how organizers should design the contest. Creativity improves more when students attend the contest as a group than as individuals, and when students attend as a classroom activity than as an extracurricular activity. Themes of the 2015 contest do not have any educational difference in this case. By providing these findings to supervisors, contest organizers will run the idea contest to effectively achieve the contest objectives.departmental bulletin pape
