Safety inspections are a mandatory part of the construction phase of a construction site by law toensure that potential hazards and risks are identified and addressed. Currently, safety inspectionsare carried out through physical walks around the workplace, where observations aredocumented manually. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how radio-controlled or autonomous robots can beused on construction sites to carry out virtual safety inspections, and how these can supportsupervisors and safety representatives in their safety work. The study aims to evaluate differentmethods for systematizing and documenting safety inspections, with a focus on investigating thepossibilities for automation, with the aim of improving the work environment. The study is a case study that includes data collection in the form of video recordings from aconstruction site, analysis of recorded material, interviews with qualified personnel, andobservations from the field study. In addition, a literature review has been carried out to put theresults in a scientific context. The current approach, where inspections are performed manuallyby a group of people, is time-consuming and can lead to varying results. The results show that it is possible to conduct inspections based on recordings from autonomousrobots. However, it emerged that details can be difficult to detect when manually reviewingrecorded material. The case study has investigated a method for partially automating inspections, but the conclusion is that the current method is not recommended as a replacement for traditionalinspections. At the same time, a clear potential is identified for developing new technology andsoftware to lead to a more positive assessment of automated inspections in the future

Dynamic Simulation of Heat Distribution and Losses in Cement Kilns for Sustainable Energy Consumption in Cement Production
Sustainable energy consumption in cement production involves practises and strategies aimed at reducing energy use and minimising environmental impact. The efficiency of a cement kiln is dependent on the kiln design, fuel type, and operating temperature. In this study, a dynamic simulation analysis is used to investigate heat losses and distribution within kilns with the aim of improving energy efficiency in cement production. This study used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with Conjugate Heat Transfer, Turbulent Flow, and the Realisable k−ϵ turbulence model to simulate heat transfer within the refractory and wall systems of the kiln, evaluate the effectiveness of these systems in managing heat losses, and establish the relationship between the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and the velocities of solid and gas phases. The simulation results indicate that a temperature gradient from the kiln’s interior to its exterior is highly dependent on the effectiveness of refractory lining in absorbing and reducing heat transfer to the outer walls. The results also confirm that different thermal profiles exist for clinker and fuel gases, with clinker temperatures consistently peaking at approximately 1450 °C, an essential condition for optimal cement-phase formation. The results also indicate that phase velocities significantly influence heat absorption and transfer. Lower velocities, such as 0.2 m/s, lead to increased heat absorption, but also elevate heat losses due to prolonged exposure. The relationship between the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and the velocities of solid and gas phases also indicates that higher velocities improve HTC and enhance overall heat transfer efficiency, reducing energy demand.Validerad;2025;Nivå 2;2025-02-10 (u4);Freetext license: CC BY</p
Computational Analysis of Flow Separation in Non-Transferred Plasma Torch: Causes, Impacts and Control Methods
In a non-transferred plasma torch, the working gas becomes ionized and forms plasma as it interacts with the electric arc at the cathode tip. However, in certain cathode shapes, particularly flat ones, and under specific conditions, the gas flow can separate at the cathode tip, forming a vortex region. While this flow separation is influenced by geometric factors, it occurs in the critical zone where plasma is generated. Understanding the causes of this separation is essential, as it may significantly impact torch performance. If the separation proves detrimental, it is important to identify ways to mitigate it. This paper presents a computational analysis of a non-transferred plasma torch to investigate the physics behind flow separation. The results highlight the location and causes of the separation, as well as its potential advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the paper explores theoretical approaches to address flow separation in plasma torches, offering practical insights for enhancing their design and efficiency.Validerad;2025;Nivå 1;2025-02-12 (u8);Full text license: CC BY 4.0</p
The importance of a relational approach to pedagogy and learning : a qualitative intervju study
Computational Modeling Of Turbulent Jet Generated by Non-transferred Plasma Torch
The plasma jet produced by a non-transferred plasma torch may initially appear steady and laminar, but it undergoes significant turbulence as it interacts with the surrounding atmosphere. Within the plasma torch, the jet begins as laminar; however, upon exiting, it transitions into a turbulent flow, extending into a long, wavy structure as it develops. This paper explores the complexities of computational modeling for non-transferred plasma torches, focusing on the challenges of simulating the multiphysics and multiphase interactions at the outlet and tracing the evolution of the plasma jet. The computational analysis uses COMSOL Multiphysics software on a 2D axisymmetric geometry, with steady-state simulations incorporating various turbulence models. A comparative assessment of the results from each turbulence model is provided, highlighting their respective strengths and limitations. Although the diffusion of the turbulent jet at the outlet is presented, the turbulence models employed in this study only offer time-averaged values, rather than a detailed breakdown of the complete jet structure. The paper concludes by validating the computationally obtained velocity magnitudes against experimental data, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the simulation results.ISBN for host publication:978-82-536-1866-1</p
Weak Points and Failures of Concrete Bridges in Cold Regions : A Literature Review
In cold regions, de-icing salts are commonly applied to roads and bridge decks during winter to prevent icing and facilitate traffic flow. However, the use of de-icing salts can damage the concrete surface and cause reinforcement corrosion. Additionally, bridges in cold regions are affected by freeze-thaw cycles, which can lead to scaling on the concrete surface and internal damage, such as Durability (D-) cracking. Reinforcement corrosion and freeze-thaw damage are the most common causes of concrete failure in bridge structures in cold regions. Concrete bridges in cold regions are also susceptible to alkali-silica reaction (ASR), a chemical reaction between the alkaline pore solution in concrete and silica in aggregates. ASR causes expansion, map cracking on the concrete surface and degrades the mechanical properties of the concrete. Scour is identified as the primarily cause of bridge failures in many regions, according to previous studies, and scour damage often worsens during flooding. Ice floes are identified as the third most common cause of hydraulic bridge failures. Their heavy weight and high velocity can damage various bridge components. These failure mechanisms can lead to severe damage, cause bridges to fail, significantly reduce the service life of the bridge, or, in the worst case, result in collapse. The objective of this master thesis is to study these weak points and failures in concrete bridges in cold regions and identify preventive measures to improve the durability and extend the service life of concrete bridges in future bridge designs. The aim is to increase knowledge and understanding of concrete bridge failures in cold regions to prevent and minimize these bridge failures in the future. The study is based on a literature review in which the causes of bridge failures are identified, and preventive measures for each failure are analysed and described, primarily based on design codes. Case studies of bridge failures are presented and discussed. The impacts of climate change on theses failure mechanisms are also discussed, resulting in accelerated deterioration of concrete structures due to changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration, temperature and relative humidity.I kalla regioner används ofta de-icing salt (vägsalt) på vägar och brodäck under vintern för att förhindra isbildning och underlätta trafikflödet.

‘We’ve Kind of Become More Professional’: Swedish Teaching Teams Enhance Skills with Participation Model for Inclusive Education
In this study, two teaching teams’ implementations of a conceptual model to support inclusive education were investigated. Focus group discussions with the teaching teams were conducted and the theory of organizational and occupational professionalism was used in the analysis. The result shows that it is possible to expand a teaching team’s professional skills by developing a common professional language and accessing vocabulary that supports their understanding of the multifaceted concepts of participation and inclusive education. To carry this out, teaching teams need both organizational professionalism, such as a supportive organization and time to meet, and occupational professionalism, such as meetings where they can discuss and reflect together and gain autonomy. The combination of lack of occupational professionalism and a strong organizational professionalism seems to limit the possibilities for professional development.Validerad;2025;Nivå 1;2025-02-26 (u0);Full text license: CC BY;This article belongs to the Special Issue "Teachers and Teaching in Inclusive Education".</p
Enhanced polyhydroxyalkanoate biosynthesis by Cupriavidus sp. CY-1 utilizing CO2 under controlled non-explosive conditions
The production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) using CO2 through hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria under safe, non-explosive conditions is making impressive strides. The present study aimed to evaluate and demonstrate the growth and productivity of PHA by Cupriavidus sp. CY-1 under different non-explosive conditions, thereby providing critical data for practical applications. The experimental results highlighted the efficiency of the CY-1 strain in PHA biosynthesis, achieving a production rate of 11.87 g L−1, which corresponds to a 90.6% yield when fermenting a gaseous substrate composed of H2 (70%), O2 (20%), and CO2 (10%). The study also examined PHA production under different non-explosive conditions, including H2 concentrations of 3.8% (v/v) and O2 at 6.5% (v/v). Furthermore, the impact of CO (30% and higher) was assessed, revealing a detrimental effect on growth and PHA production. Notably, the addition of Tween 80 significantly enhanced PHA productivity. The effective utilization of CO2 has confirmed poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] (PHB) as a valuable derived form of PHA. By implementing a two-step treatment with valeric acid, we successfully produced P(3HB-co-3HV) (PHBV) at a concentration of 1.47 g L−1. This achievement highlights the potential to enhance PHA production through innovative strategies. Furthermore, the examination of phaC gene expression levels has facilitated accurate predictions of PHA productivity. The use of CO2 from trichloroethylene (TCE) biodegradation faced concentration-related challenges; however, the higher CO2 levels achieved from phenol biodegradation, at 1200 mg L−1, indicate substantial potential for efficient PHA production.Validerad;2025;Nivå 1;2025-02-26 (u5);Full text license: CC BY-NC 4.0;Funder: JSPS KAKENHI (24K11471); Ogasawara Foundation; Iwatani Foundation;</p
