Combinatorial framework for reducing tardiness in multi-machine scheduling using EDD, NEH and genetic algorithm

    No full text
[EN] No-idle flow shop scheduling is a critical challenge in manufacturing, where minimising overall tardiness directly impacts efficiency and customer satisfaction. This study introduces a novel hybrid algorithm, EDD-NEH-GA (ENG), which integrates Earliest Due Date (EDD) and Nawaz-Enscore-Ham (NEH) heuristics with a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to balance global exploration and local optimisation. The objective is to overcome premature convergence and achieve superior tardiness reduction. Computational experiments on Taillard s benchmark instances demonstrate ENG s effectiveness compared to the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) based approach by Balogh. Across all tested cases, ENG updated 93% of previously best-known solutions, achieving an average tardiness reduction of 18 52%. These results confirm ENG as a robust and efficient solution for complex no-idle flow shop environments, offering significant gains in scheduling performance and operational productivity. After performing statistical analysis it is noted that ENG outperforms. ENG significantly improved scheduling performance, averaging 8430 units of reduction in overall tardiness. According to the standard error of the difference (SE = 1859), this improvement appears to be constant across cases.Bari, P.;Deshmukh, N.;Yadav, P.;Karande, P.;Bari, P. (2026). [EN] We construct an age-structured mathematical model that considers comorbidity status, vaccine hesitancy and gender in order to analyze the efficacy of a very large variety of COVID-19 vaccination programs. We investigate these programs during the early vaccination phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and use the specific time-varying vaccine availability of the USA to approximate the situation in the real world. The epidemiological model is based on a large non-autonomous system of nonlinear differential equations that is solved numerically. The number of fatalities and the years of life lost (YLL) are used to evaluate the optimality of each of the vaccination programs. Due to the numerous factors that influence the infected cases and fatalities, determining the optimal vaccination program is a very complex problem from different points of view. The novel mathematical model includes the effect of social contacts between different demographic groups and the behavior of vaccine hesitant people. We developed, adapted, and implemented three different new optimization algorithms to find the best vaccination programs that minimize the selected metric. These programs differ in the prioritization of the vaccination of each demographic group of the model. The optimization processes found that the best strategies prioritize middle aged male and female individuals without comorbidities. A second vaccination target prioritizes middle aged male individuals with comorbidities. These results are based on the particular behavior of people with comorbidities and taking into account that the case fatality rate of males is higher than for females. The findings of this study highlight the importance of developing an optimal vaccination program with the intention of saving lives and supporting rational vaccine recommendations for other potential pandemics. This research is supported by an Institutional Development Award (IDeA) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under grant number P20GM103451. [EN] Free water surface constructed wetlands (FWSCWs) replicate the ecological functions of natural wetlands, providing multiple ecosystem services, including water quality improvement. The Tancat de la Pipa constructed wetland (TPCW), located in Albufera Natural Park, Valencia, Spain, was designed to mitigate lake eutrophication. Its role in treating urban runoff, particularly from combined sewer overflows (CSOs), was recently assessed. Hydrodynamic modelling revealed that three-parallel lines with tanks-in-series configuration best represents the wetland's flow dynamics. By applying the water quality model, the main mechanisms enabling the TPCW, originally not designed for runoff control, to mitigate pollution peaks from CSO discharges were identified. Ammonium removal was primarily driven by washout and nitrification, while sedimentation dominated TSS reduction. These findings emphasize the critical role of FWSCWs in managing diffuse pollution from CSOs and highlight the potential of predictive water quality models to optimize wetland performance under variable inflow conditions. This publication is part of the I + D + i project TED2021-130567B-I00 (RAINWETPIPA) , funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by the European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR.Martinez-Biosca, Adrian;Hernández Crespo, Carmen;Asensi Dasí, Enrique Javier;Andrés-Doménech, Ignacio;Rodrigo Santamalia, Mª Eugenia;Benedito Durá, Vicent;Martín Monerris, Miguel (2026). [EN] The recent Directive (EU) 2022/2464 on sustainability reporting by companies represents a historic milestone in corporate reporting by equating and integrating corporate social and environmental information with traditional financial reporting. This Directive will not only bring about structural and organisational changes in our companies. Besides, it will also enable better decision-making in transitioning to a more decarbonised economy. Professional sports clubs are unique companies with a very high economic and social impact, so it seems appropriate to study their recent behaviour about the sustainability of their management in the current social context. To this end, based on the sample of clubs belonging to the LFP, their sustainability reports will be studied to characterise this sector.[CA] Aquest Treball de Fi de Grau analitza l’evolució normativa sobre informació no financera i la integració de la sostenibilitat en els clubs de futbol espanyols. [EN] This Master's Thesis aims to analyze the flood risk in the Sigalero Ravine, located in the municipality of Benicàssim (Castellón), and propose protection measures to reduce its impact on the urban area. Firstly, the need for intervention will be justified due to previous overflow events that have historically caused damage to infrastructure and urban areas. To this end, available information will be reviewed, including historical data, cartographic, hydrological, hydraulic, and land use information, complemented by an on-site inspection of the current state of the ravine. Next, a 2D hydraulic model will be developed using HEC-RAS software to simulate the behavior of the ravine under different rainfall scenarios. Subsequently, the economic and social consequences of flooding will be assessed using iFlood software, considering the possibility of failure of critical infrastructure for the municipality. Finally, based on this information, mitigation measures (channeling, embankment reinforcement, early warning systems, etc.) will be proposed, and the risk reduction compared to the current situation will be quantified. To conclude, a cost-benefit analysis of the proposed alternatives will be carried out, justifying the most suitable solution from a technical, economic, and social perspective.Tárrega Saura, I. De los sistemas de innovación a la innovación transformativa: el caso del departamento de Córdoba en Colombia

    No full text
[EN] This doctoral thesis examines the transition of the Regional Innovation System (RIS) of the department of Córdoba, Colombia, towards an approach based on Transformative Innovation Policies (TIP) and Mission-Oriented Policies (MOP), with a particular emphasis on the Agri-Food System. It starts from the recognition that traditional approaches to Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI)—based on linear or innovation system models—have proven insufficient to address structural challenges in peripheral regions of the Global South, such as multidimensional poverty, social exclusion, or environmental vulnerability. These approaches have often overlooked the injustices that hinder alternative paths to innovation, limiting their capacity to generate profound transformations. Through mixed-method research based on a case study that integrates interviews, documentary analysis, and the participatory construction of a Theory of Change, the thesis identifies that the SRI in Córdoba operates with weak institutional coordination, limited focus on social and environmental issues, and low participation of rural and ethnic communities in decision-making processes. The Multilevel Perspective (MLP) analysis reveals a Landscape with significant pressures¿such as climate change and the demand for sustainable markets¿that challenge a traditional agricultural regime anchored in low-tech practices, informality, and limited investment in R&D. However, emerging Niches are identified, such as agroecological initiatives and solidarity economy networks, which have transformative potential. Given this scenario, a transformative roadmap for the agri-food system is proposed, embodied in transformative missions that combine the ambition and directionality of the POMs with the inclusiveness and adaptability of the PITs. The research details the design of the Córdoba Agri-Food Mission, explaining how the participation of local actors was crucial in its construction and how a specific Theory of Change is articulated to guide its development. It also presents a Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Plan (PMEA) that promotes a formative and participatory approach, crucial for adaptive management in contexts of high uncertainty. Among the theoretical contributions, the contextualization of PIT in the Global South and the empirical integration with POMs stand out, enriching the analysis and practical considerations of the directionality of innovation by providing a robust normative foundation for the expansion of "real opportunities." At the practical level, the work offers a detailed diagnosis of Córdoba's SRI and concrete guidelines for the design and implementation of an adapted PIT agenda, including the creation of multi-stakeholder platforms and the redesign of financing instruments. Methodologically, the thesis demonstrates the feasibility of a qualitative case study design that integrates diverse sources and addresses the ethical and practical challenges of action research in post-conflict territories. In summary, Córdoba can move toward inclusive, mission-oriented innovation by allowing different policy frameworks to coexist rather than replacing them. The success of this transition will depend on its ability to coordinate endogenous resources and mobilize diverse actors, overcoming systemic barriers (such as lack of coordination and direction) through adaptive and participatory public policies. Hence the relevance of this case study.Sanabria Espitia, OE. (2025). Using Frequency B-Splines for an accurate and faster calculation of adaptive transforms for electric machines diagnosis

    No full text
[EN] Early detection of faults in electric motors is crucial to prevent unplanned downtime and expensive repairs. Transient analysis through time-frequency transforms reveals important information on the motor condition. Computational time of these transforms becomes a problem when dealing with thousands of motors in just one industry. Researchers focus on obtaining the best quality results, usually using Gabor functions as t-f atoms. This paper shows how Frequency B-Splines can reach the same quality with nearly 40% less computational time. To achieve this goal, the slope criterion is applied to select the optimal atoms parameters. A formula that relates the slope of the Heisenberg Box of a FBS with its parameters is deduced. The proper time interval where the FBS must be defined is also determined. Results are shown not only with lab tests, but also through a field case.Pons Llinares, Joan;Quijano-Lopez, Alfredo;Bonet-Jara, Jorge;Vedreño-Santos, F. (2026). This dataset is about the experimental results obtained and published in the article "A Control Scheme to Suppress Circulating Currents in Parallel-Connected Three-Phase Inverters": Liberos, M.; Gonzalez-Medina, R.; Patrao, I.; Garcera , G.; Figueres, E. Electronics 2022, 11, 3720. DOI: 10.3390/electronics11223720 The parallel operation of inverters has many benefits, such as modularity and redundancy. However, the parallel connection of inverters produces circulating currents that may result in malfunctions of the system. In this work, a control technique for the elimination of the low-frequency components of the circulating currents in grid-connected inverters is presented. The proposed control structure contains n - 1 zero-sequence control loops, with n being the number of inverters connected in parallel. Simulation and experimental results have been carried out on a prototype composed of two 5 kW inverters connected in parallel. The results have been obtained by considering the following mismatches between both inverters: inductance values of the grid filters, unbalance of the delivered power, and the use of different modulation techniques.Liberos, Marian;González-Medina, Raúl;Patrao Herrero, Iván;Garcerá, Gabriel;Figueres Amorós, Emilio (2026).
