Bridging the perception-reality gap in manufacturing complexity: A dual-perspective configurator for digital transformation

    No full text
[EN] Digital transformation amplifies manufacturing complexity, yet managers systematically misperceive its magnitude, a perception-reality gap that undermines strategic responsiveness. Existing diagnostic tools measure either subjective perception or objective structure, never both simultaneously, preventing organizations from identifying dangerous cognitive-operational misalignments during technology adoption. This study develops and validates a dual-perspective configurator integrating entropy-based objective metrics (static (Cs) and dynamic (Cd) entropic complexity across 40 managerial variables) with psychometric scales capturing cognitive load, using data from 18 manufacturing companies from six industrial sectors in Cartagena (Colombia) across discrete and process industries spanning small, medium, and large enterprise categories. Advanced statistical analyses, including hierarchical ANOVA, mixed-effects modeling, and psychometric validation, were conducted using Python. Results reveal a paradoxical size-dependent divergence. Large firms exhibit high objective complexity yet low perceived complexity, suggesting organizational routines and technological familiarity mask underlying systemic disorder. Conversely, medium-sized enterprises demonstrate strong perception-reality alignment, indicating transparent operational visibility, while small firms show moderate concordance with lower absolute complexity levels. Firm size and stage emerged as primary determinants with negligible sectoral effects. The configurator demonstrated excellent reliability, validating complexity as a systemically interdependent construct. The dual-entropy framework enables early detection of cognitive-operational mismatches invisible through conventional strategic planning, transforming abstract complexity discourse into actionable diagnostic intelligence for managing the perception-reality gap during Industry 4.0 transitions. This research is not funded by any organization or institute. Muscle-Targeted Robotic Assistance and Augmentation of Human Motion

    No full text
[EN] This article presents a novel control framework for assisting human arm movements with a robotic device. Unlike existing collaborative and wearable robots that predominantly operate in task space or joint space, our framework focuses on controlling variables related to the muscular space, which refers to the activation and force generation of individual muscles. Translating these variables to the robot's actuation space is challenging, which hinders the development of human-centered tasks and limits the transparency of robotic assistance for the central nervous system. To address these issues, we consider the relationship between the muscular space and the robot's task space, using the kinematics and dynamics of the human limb obtained from a calibrated musculoskeletal model based on Hill's muscle model. Our framework includes two muscle-targeted methods: assistance and augmentation. The assistance method allows exercise or rehabilitation of specific muscles, while the augmentation method achieves isotropic manipulability, enabling the user to exert forces uniformly in all directions using the novel concept of a force envelope. The experiments were conducted using a haptic robot in admittance mode with a viscous environment simulating a load. The results demonstrate significant improvement in the prediction capabilities of the calibrated model compared with the baseline. Muscle-targeted assistance induces substantial changes in targeted muscular efforts. In addition, we achieve isotropic manipulability in a more precise way as compared with previous methods. In summary, our proposed control framework proves effective in assisting human arm movements with a robotic device for rehabilitation and power augmentation in human-centered applications. This work was supported in part by the Generalitat Valenciana, Conselleria d'Innovacio, Universitats, Ciencia i Societat under Grant CIAICO/2023/074; in part by the Vicerrectorado de Investigacion de la Universitat Politecnica de Valencia under Grant PAID-11-21, in part by Slovenian Research Agency under Program P2-0076; and in part by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement 101120408-SWAG.Escarabajal, RJ.;Paris, E.;Jamsek, M.;Petric, T.;Valera Fernández, Ángel;Mata Amela, Vicente;Babic, J. Desenvolupament i implementació del bessó digital d'un biosensor genètic d'inducció basat en el segrest de factors de transcripció

    No full text
[EN] This Final Degree Project focuses on the implementation of a digital twin of a genetic biosensor, whose operation is based on the sequestration of a repressor transcription factor. The main objective is to provide a predictive tool capable of anticipating the behavior of the biosensor depending on the biological parts used in its construction (such as promoters, RBS sequences, and plasmids), the cellular context of the bacterial host (Escherichia coli), and the concentration of the inducer metabolite present in the medium. To achieve this, the first step will be the characterization of the fundamental biochemical reactions that determine the functioning of the system. Based on this, a complete dynamic model will be developed, capable of describing the states and molecular transitions involved in the biosensor. Subsequently, simplifying hypotheses related to different time scales and invariant parameters will be applied, allowing the derivation of reduced models that are more manageable and computationally efficient. The project also includes the integration of the biosensor model with a previously developed host-cell model, in order to account for essential phenomena such as the competition for cellular resources between the endogenous metabolism and the synthetic circuit. In this way, the digital twin will not only represent the internal dynamics of the biosensor, but also its realistic interaction with the cellular environment. Finally, the digital twin will be computationally implemented in a simulation environment (MATLAB), enabling the execution of different virtual scenarios and the analysis of key aspects such as induction curves, system sensitivity, repressor release dynamics, and the overall response of the biosensor under varying experimental conditions. Overall, this project aims to demonstrate the potential of the digital twin approach for the design and analysis of synthetic biosensors, paving the way for more rational and efficient strategies in synthetic biology.Pina Poveda, M. Electrochemical degradation of micro/nanoplastics in water: recent results

    No full text
[EN] Microplastics and nanoplastics have emerged as critical environmental contaminants due to their ubiquitous presence, persistence, and potential risks to human health and ecosystems. These particles, derived from the fragmentation of plastic waste, can adsorb other contaminants, penetrate biological barriers, and accumulate in living organisms. Wastewater treatment plants act as both sources and sinks of microplastics and nanoplastics, retaining a significant fraction of these pollutants but failing to remove them completely. In addition, conventional treatment processes can induce the fragmentation of microplastics into nanoplastics, increasing the problem. Given the limited effectiveness of traditional physical, chemical, or biological separation methods, advanced oxidation processes have emerged as promising alternatives. Among them, electrochemical oxidation, based on the in situ generation of reactive oxygen species such as hydroxyl radicals, has demonstrated high efficiency in degrading organic pollutants. This review analyses the most recent advancements in the use of electrochemical oxidation, highlighting the use of boron-doped diamond anodes and other electrochemical configurations. Experimental studies with different operating conditions, combinations with complementary techniques and the impact of electrocatalytic materials on the efficiency of the process are addressed. The reported results demonstrate degradation rates above 90% under specific conditions, without generating toxic by-products, and with reasonable energy consumption. Electrochemical oxidation enables the mineralization of polymeric particles and adapts to different water matrices. Further research at pilot- and industrial-scale is required to optimize operations and validate its long-term feasibility. Overall, electrochemical oxidation is emerging as a strategic tool for advanced wastewater treatment. This research is part of the Spanish R+D+i contract TED2021-130905B-I00 funded by MCIN/ AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by the European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR as well as the Red E3Tech Plus: Proyecto Redes de Investigación de la AEI Network E3Tech PLUS (RED2022-134552-T) project. [EN] This Final Degree Project is carried out at the Ford Almussafes plant (Valencia) and arises from the need to adapt the assignment of operators in a section of the body shop to the actual production demand. Specifically, it analyzes a group of three interconnected lines dedicated to the assembly of the underbody of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, where the official staffing level of five operators per shift does not correspond to the current workload. To address this issue, a detailed simulation model is developed using the Witness Horizon software, based on real data on cycle times, machine availability, and operator work studies. The simulation makes it possible to reproduce the behavior of the lines and evaluate different operator assignment scenarios in order to identify more efficient configurations capable of maintaining the required production with a lower use of resources. Complementarily, the project incorporates an initiative aimed at increasing operator autonomy in basic maintenance interventions on Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), which are essential for internal material supply. This proposal seeks to reduce downtime associated with simple faults and contribute to greater stability in the internal logistics flow. Both areas converge toward a common purpose: increasing the operational efficiency of the plant through resource optimization and the application of supportive technological solutions.[CA] Aquest Treball de Fi de Grau es desenvolupa en la planta de Ford Almussafes (València) i naix de la necessitat d’adaptar l’assignació d’operaris en una secció de la planta de carrosseries a la demanda real de producció.
