The Garden’s 135th birthday coincided with the birthday jubilees of two retired Garden managers: the 90th of Assistant Pro-fessor Ljerka Regula, and the 70th of Biserka Juretić, MSc. Moreover, the founding fathers of the Garden, University Professor Antun Heinz and Head Gardener Vítězslav Durchánek, died 105 and 100 years ago, respectively. A combined celebration and commemora-tion were organized in October of 2024 with the unveiling the monument dedicated to Professor Heinz
Assessment of Genetic Diversity in Moroccan Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) Collection Using Physicochemical Approaches and Study of Effect of Age Trees
As with other fruit trees, the pomological and chemical characteristics of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) can vary from year to year and depending on the age of the trees. Physicochemical screening of 19 pomegranate cultivars from a Moroccan ex situ collection, whose fruits were harvested from three different years, showed highly or very highly significant differences for most traits. Indeed, fruit weight, diameter and height were relatively higher in 2017, exceeding the values measured in 2018 by 22.8%, 13.5% and 4%, respectively. The weight and length of the aril, some chemical characteristics such as pH, Brix and maturity index also showed higher values in 2017, exceeding the 2018 values by 3%, 7%, 3%, 14% and 80% respectively. On average over the three harvest years, the 'Chelfi' cultivar had the lowest weight, while the 'Khikhou' variety had the highest value. The weight and yield of the aril varied between 266 mg ('OunH') and 670 mg ('Khik') and 50.65 ('Khik') and 73.34 ('Gord'), respectively. For the chemical parameters, the total soluble solids ranged from 14.52 (Grenade_Jaune) to 17.81 (Sefri 2) °Brix. The maximum value of titratable acidity was found for ‘Negro_Monsteriosa’ (2.87%) and the minimum value for ‘Grenade_Rouge’ (0.37%). The PCA analysis shows the distribution in groups according to the harvest year, which illustrates the annual variance of the characteristics. The hierarchical analysis shows the presence of gene pools with no obvious geographical structure. The results obtained thus provide a basis for the breeding programs of the species
Design, synthesis, and evaluation of a novel fluorescent probe for competitive fluorescence polarization assay to screen galectin-8 inhibitors
In the present work, we describe the design, synthesis, and evaluation of a galectin-8-binding fluorescent probe designed for a competitive fluorescence polarization (FP) assay for screening new galectin-8N inhibitors. The probe was characterized for its photophysical properties and its binding affinity for galectin-8N was determined by using FP. We evaluated the probe in a competitive FP assay with three known galectin-8N inhibitors and demonstrated its suitability for high-throughput screening
Strategies and processes for improving the horizontal mobility of students at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb
Horizontalna mobilnost time postaje platforma za inovacije, suradnju i jačanje konkurentnosti studenata u obrazovnom i radnom okružju. Horizontal mobility enables students to enrol in courses from other study programmes within the University of Zagreb that are not available in their primary study programme, with recognition of completed exams and ECTS credits. This practice enriches their experience, fosters the development of competencies and flexibility, and is essential for adapting to modern societal challenges. The paper explains the steps that students of the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, need to take, the relevant contacts, deadlines for submitting applications, and the conditions for course recognition at their home faculty. The paper aims to facilitate students’ navigation within the horizontal mobility system, and provide the Faculty with tools for continuous improvement of this educational process. Horizontal mobility thus becomes a platform for innovation, collaboration, and enhancing students’ competitiveness in academic and professional environments. Emphasis is placed on the need for transparency and alignment among all University components, along with the newly defined guidelines, to ensure effective monitoring and improvement of the horizontal mobility system
Thymoma in a dog
Klinički, životinje s timomom pokazuju znakove prisutnosti tvorbe koja zauzima prostor u prsnoj šupljini, poput respiratornog distresa i edema u ventralnom dijelu glave i vrata. The thymus is an organ composed of epithelial and lymphoid tissue. Thymic neoplasms can arise from both components, and thymomas develop from the epithelial component and are usually benign. They usually grow slowly, are encapsulated and rarely metastasize. Clinically, animals with thymoma have signs consistent with a space-occupying mass in the thoracic cavity, such as respiratory distress, and edema in the ventral part of the head and neck. Histologically, they are very variable, which makes their diagnosis
and classification difficult. This report presents the histopathological finding of a thymoma in a 10-year-old female dog. The tumor was submitted for histopathological examination to the Department of Veterinary
Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb

Digital vs. Traditional: Selected Views on Creating Optimal Marketing Communication Mix
Purpose – This study serves as the initial phase of a broader research project. Its aim is to examine age-specific consumer preferences as one of the fundamental starting points for understanding effective marketing communication—particularly from the perspective of the transition from traditional to digital media.
Design/Methodology/Approach – The analysis is based on the empirical research, in which the media preferences of Central European consumers were identified using the CAWI method through a questionnaire distributed to a sample of over 5,000 respondents. To better examine the selected context, graphical representations of differences based on cluster analysis using
the Pearson correlation coefficient were employed.
Findings and Implications – The results indicate that different age groups exhibit distinct preferences for traditional versus digital media. An effective communication mix should be based on a thorough understanding of the target market. The findings show that customers aged 55 and older tend to prefer traditional media, though they can still be effectively reached in the digital space through age-based targeting. Conversely, the data suggests that television is nearing the limits of its effectiveness for consumers under the age of 34. A combined use of communication channels is therefore highly recommended.
Limitations – The main limitation of the research is the local nature of the dataset. However, this does not significantly affect the quality or relevance of the findings.
Originality – By identifying distinct clusters, the study provides a foundation for better understanding the media market from the perspective of the target customer. As the media landscape continues to undergo digital transformation, thorough examination of this shift is essential
#Challenge Accepted: Adolescents' Perception of Motivation Behind Social Media Challenges
Tehnološki napredak i sve veća važnost interneta učinili su
izazove na društvenim mrežama uobičajenom praksom
među adolescentima. Unatoč njihovoj raširenosti, rijetka su
istraživanja na ovu temu. Ovo istraživanje proučava kako
adolescenti doživljavaju motive svojih vršnjaka za
uključivanje u online izazove. Sudjelovala su 43 učenika u
šest fokusnih grupa. Rezultati ističu teme poput
(samo)poštovanja, potrebe za pripadanjem, motive vezane
za regulaciju emocija, traženja uzbuđenja i razvoj online
identiteta. Adolescenti kao ključne čimbenike izdvajaju
popularnost, zabavu i vršnjački pritisak. Od izvanredne je
važnosti podizanje svijesti učenika, roditelja i nastavnika o
učinku izazova na društvenim mrežama na svakodnevni
život mladih.Technological progress and the Internet's growing importance
have made social media challenges common among
adolescents. Despite their prevalence, research on this topic
remains scarce. This study explores how adolescents perceive
their peers' motivation for participating in social media
challenges. Forty-three students in six focus groups participated.
The results highlight themes such as the need for (self-)respect,
the need for love and belonging, motives related to emotion
regulation and sensation seeking, and the pursuit of online
identity development. Adolescents emphasise popularity, fun,
and peer pressure as key factors. Raising awareness about the
impact of social media challenges on young people's daily lives
among students, parents, and educators, is crucial
Some Aspects of Middle Childhood in Croatia and Well-Being of Children from a Parental Perspective
Cilj provedenoga kvalitativnog istraživanja jest ispitati percepciju
roditelja djece u srednjem djetinjstvu o važnosti te pozitivnim i
negativnim stranama upotrebe digitalne tehnologije, njegovanja
djeteta. Kada je u pitanju digitalna tehnologija, sudionici navode
i određene negativne posljedice te određene poteškoće s kojima
se susreću kada nastoje djecu uključiti u organizirane sportske
aktivnosti. Kao razliku u roditeljstvu nekada i danas, ističu
znatno veći nadzor nad djecom, kao i uključenost u
organiziranje slobodnoga vremena. Dobiveni rezultati
pojedinoj okolini. This qualitative study aims to examine the perception of the
importance, and positive and negative aspects of digital
technology use, physical activity, and literacy environment for
the well-being of children in middle childhood, as well as
perceived differences in parenting between generations. The
study included 40 parents (25 mothers and 15 fathers) in 9
online focus groups. The results show that participants agree
on the positive influence of all three environments on child
well-being. They also recognise some negative aspects of
digital technology use and the difficulties they encounter in
trying to ensure their children's participation in organised
sports activities. As for differences in parenting between
generations, they mention more supervision displayed by
today's parents and greater involvement in leisure time
organisation. The results enable future quantitative studies on
the parental perception of environmental influences on
children's well-being and the creation of interventions aimed
at removing obstacles that prevent parents from engaging
their children in certain activities
