From Construction to Renovation: History and Key Elements for the Reconstruction of the State Archives Building in Karlovac
This paper presents the historical significance and contemporary restoration of the State Archives building in Karlovac, the first purpose-built archival facility in Croatia. For many years, the building served as a model within national archival practice. However, due to inadequate maintenance and the emergence of new standards in both archival profession and construction, the building now requires a comprehensive restoration. The aim of the paper is to analyse this process from an interdisciplinary perspective, highlighting the interconnected roles of archival, architectural, and construction professions in defining both requirementsand solutions. Special emphasis is placed on the role of the archival profession in articulating priorities: from establishing optimal conditions for the preservationand protection of archival records, through improving working conditions for staff, to creating spaces that meet the institution’s future needs. The paper compares existing conditions and standards with those intended to be achieved after the restoration, offering a detailed description of the methods and criteria applied in the development of project solutions. In doing so, it demonstrates that restoration cannot be regarded merely as a construction intervention, but rather as a complex process encompassing organisational, functional, and societal dimensions. Furthermore, the paper considers the broader role of archives. Beyond the professional and technical aspects of the restoration, it emphasises the importance of opening the archives to the public, which means facilitating access to records, encouraging their use for scientific, educational, andcultural purposes, and enabling the institution to showcase its activities. In this way, the archive building is transformed from a mere storage facility into a dynamic space that supports growth, development, and adaptation to changes in society, technology and academic standards. In conclusion, the paper argues that the restoration of the State Archives in Karlovac serves as an example of how an interdisciplinary approach can successfully align technical efficiency with the demands of contemporary archival practice, while also ensuring the institution’s long-term sustainability and relevance
Archaeological Research within and around Zagreb Cathedral
Archaeological research conducted in 1956, though limited in scope, allowed the identification of elements of an older structure. The foundations of buttresses were identified in probes along the northern wall of the Chapel of St Stephen and in those placed along the southern wall of Timotheus' Cathedral.
Archaeological monitoring was carried out in 1971 (in the sacristy) and in 1981 during excavations for the installation of central heating in the cathedral. Remnants of masonry structures were discovered that can be categorized, on the basis of their material and construction methods, into three types: foundations built with cut stone, foundations built with broken limestone and lime mortar, and remnants of plastered and painted walls.
While the remains of the buttresses found in the northern wall of the Chapel of St Stephen and in the foundations of the southern wall of Timotheus' Cathedral can likely be associated with an older, probably early Gothic structure – commonly referred to as the ‘pre-Tatar cathedral’ – the masonry structures discovered within the cathedral cannot be reliably interpreted at the current stage of research.
At the initiative of the church in Zagreb, the Zagreb City Museum conducted archaeological research north of the cathedral from 2016 to 2018. This research documented a lime kiln from the time of Bollé’s renovation of the cathedral, a 19th-century drainage system, prehistoric structures, and remnants of stone sculptures.
During the work to repair damage caused by the earthquake that struck Zagreb on 22 March 2020, staff from the Zagreb City Museum conducted several site inspections.
The text also references all archaeological research or monitoring conducted during excavations near the cathedral, in the broader area of Zagreb’s Kaptol, shedding light on how the area was used during various historical periods
Using automated paraphrasing tools: Examining the grammatical structure of generated paraphrases of scientific abstracts
The proliferation of automated paraphrasing tools (APTs) raises questions about how generated paraphrases differ from the original texts. In this study, 50 abstracts published in Nature were compared with paraphrases generated by QuillBot, Jasper, and Copilot. Tactic and logico-semantic relations were analyzed using a modified version of the Hallidayan clause-complexing framework. The findings revealed that the APT that most closely matched Nature was QuillBot; no significant differences were found in any of the categories. Collectively, Jasper and Copilot leaned toward clausal complexity, using fewer paratactic extensions and more hypotactic elaborations. This study highlights general features of generated paraphrases that are not commonly addressed in the literature. Explicit paraphrasing instructions are recommended to avert any misuse of APTs
Media Reporting and Interpretive Frames : An Analysis of News Portals on Thompson’s Concert in Zagreb
This paper explores media framing as a process of structuring and interpreting public events, with a particular emphasis on the reporting of Marko Perković Thompson’s concert held in Zagreb on July 5, 2025. Through the application of content analysis, the study examines articles published on three of the most widely read Croatian online news portals (Dnevnik.hr, 24sata.hr, and Index.hr) over a period of three days before and three days after the event. The evaluation matrix included five generic frames defined by De Vreese, Peter, and Semetko (2001): conflict, human interest, economic consequences, morality, and responsibility. The findings indicate that while all portals reported extensively on the concert, they applied different framing strategies. Dnevnik.hr and 24sata.hr emphasized the responsibility frame, whereas Index.hr focused more strongly on the human-interest frame. These differences reflect distinct editorial policies and highlight how framing contributes to shaping public perceptions of large-scale cultural events
Autorialità femminile nella rivista Varietas (1904–1912): presenza, contributi, ricezione e mediazione culturale
Rad analizira prisutnost i objavljivanje književnica u ilustriranom mjesečniku Varietas. Casa e famiglia (1904. Na temelju primarnih izvora iz digitalne zbirke Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma i primjeraka pohranjenih u Sveučilišnoj knjižnici u Puli, istraživanje prikazuje različite modalitete ženskoga sudjelovanja: vlastitu književnu produkciju (Ada Negri, Vittoria Aganoor, Grazia Deledda, Virginia Piatti Tango/Agar), novinarsko publicističke i modno-estetske priloge (Anna Franchi, Enrica Grasso, Cesarina Lupati, „Fidelia“) te recepcijske osvrte muških suvremenika (Giannino Antona-Traversi o Neeri; Riccardo Sonzogno o Irmi Gramatica). The article examines the presence and publication of women writers in the illustrated monthly Varietas. Casa e famiglia (1904–1912), a representative family periodical in early twentieth-century Italy. Although not a specialised women’s magazine, Varietas opened itself to contributions by women writers and journalists, thereby enhancing the cultural visibility of female authorship in the public sphere. Drawing on primary sources from the digital collection of the National Central Library of Rome and on copies held at the University Library of Pula, the study highlights several forms of women’s participation: literary production (Ada Negri, Vittoria Aganoor, Grazia Deledda, Virginia Piatti Tango Agar), journalistic-publicistic and fashion-aesthetic pieces (Anna Franchi, Enrica Grasso, Cesarina Lupati, Fidelia), as well as contemporaneous male reception (Giannino Antona Traversi on Neera; Riccardo Sonzogno on Irma Gramatica). The article presents bilingual quotations (it // hr): the original Italian passages are taken from the magazine, while the Croatian translations are by the author. These citations demonstrate that the women featured in Varietas act as poets, narrators, critics, and protagonists in theatrical-literary debates, while male critics co-construct the framework of their public valorisation. The analysis shows that the magazine functions as a space of cultural mediation in which female voices are integrated into the broader literary and social context of the early twentieth century. Casa e famiglia (1904–1912), periodico familiare rappresentativo in Italia all’inizio del XX secolo.
Anketa o primjeni alignera među ortodontima u Hrvatskoj
Objectives: The aim of this cross-sectional survey was to investigate clear aligner therapy (CAT) practices and protocols among orthodontic specialists in the Republic of Croatia. Materials and Methods: The modified version of a previously published questionnaire s was distributed online to 180 orthodontists. It included 46 open- and closed-ended questions across 11 sections, covering demographics, clinical use of CAT, aligner preferences, digital treatment planning (DTP), indications, protocols, interproximal reduction (IPR), refinements, retention, patient-reported issues, and overall perceptions. Respondents not using CAT were directed to a separate section on non-use. Results: The majority of respondents (88%) reported using CAT in clinical practice, although only 10% of their annual cases involved CAT. Adults were more common patient group (57.9%), and the main indication was mild to moderate crowding. Invisalign was the most frequently used aligner system (58.7%), primarily chosen for the quality of digital treatment planning (DTP) and sophistication of product features. Two-thirds of the respondents reported modifying the digital treatment plan, particularly by adjusting the final tooth position. Refinement was performed in 50% of the cases. IPR was included in 80% of the initial treatment plans and only 20% of the refinement phases. Finally, 52.6% of orthodontists considered CAT to be superior to conventional fixed appliance therapy. Conclusions: CAT is widely used by orthodontists in Croatia, primarily for mild cases. Nevertheless, aligners are still not perceived as producing superior outcomes compared with fixed appliances.
The role of strategic planning in innovative financing for adaptation regarding climate change: a case study of municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina
This paper aims to explore key aspects of strategic planning for investment activities to ensure
that municipalities can adequately adapt to climate change. The main research question
investigates the extent to which strategic planning is focused on climate change adaptation
measures. The hypothesis is: Municipalities have planned and developed mechanisms for
financing activities aimed at climate change adaptation. To validate this hypothesis, we used a
methodology that included desk research and a case study of four local government units in
Bosnia and Herzegovina - two from each entity. This paper provides empirical evidence on the
direction that local government units, municipalities should take in adapting to climate change
through strategic planning. The limitations of the research stem from the complexity of the
constitutional structure of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the differing legislation applied in the two
entities in the area relevant to this study
Contribution to the knowledge of the etymology of the oikonyms Vrbanja and Vrbanjuša (Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina)
The paper offers a detailed etymological analysis of the Sarajevo oikonyms
Vrbanja and Vrbanjuša, contextualised within the extra-linguistic reality in
which they emerged. Previous etymological treatments were imprecise and led to
incomplete conclusions regarding the possible linguistic origin and age of these
oikonyms.
The etymological and motivational analysis of the two oikonyms, along with
the examination of extra-linguistic factors relevant to their formation, is based on
Ottoman registers from 1455–1604, topographic maps and regulatory plans of the
Sarajevo area published between 1882 and 1949, as well as other written sources.
The analysis proposes that the toponymic base of both oikonyms is the
anthroponym Vrban, derived from the Latin personal name Urbanus, from
which, after the Slavic adaptation Urbanus > Vrban, the oikonym Vrbanja was
formed with the possessive suffix -j. The oikonym Vrbanjuša was subsequently
derived from Vrbanja using the suffix -uša. This conclusion is supported by
extra-linguistic evidence related to the cultural history of the city
