[[abstract]]The purpose of this study aims to unite researchers from mathematics education, science education, and special education together to assist teachers in an elementary school, which locates at a disadvantaged area in Taipei, to enhance their content knowledge (CK) , pedagogical knowledge (PK), and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and to increase students learning attitudes and effects of mathematics and natural science . Total study period is three years with three stages. The first half-year stage’s main mission is to find out the students’ motivations, attitudes, self-confidence towards mathematics and science learning and teachers awareness of their students’ learning difficulties as well. Through classroom observations, questionnaires, and interviews with both teachers and students, the research team will understand and familiar with the whole research environment and the starting point of the second one and half year stage study, which will focus on assist teachers doing adaptations from curriculum contents, processes, and products to cope with the individual students needs. The expected contributions of this study are (1) to enhance teachers ‘ CK, PK and PCK of teaching mathematics and science: (2) to increase first to forth grade elementary students’ learning motivations, attitudes, confidences and effects; (3) to create a cooperative school through combining the general and special education together ; (4) to establish a good evidence-based research model by bridging research and practice together; and finally (5) to reach the ultimate goal of “successful teaching to each of the students’” and to achieve the ideal of “science education for all”.

Developing physics concepts through hands-on problem solving: a perspective on a technological project design

    No full text
[[abstract]]In a contest featuring hands-on projects, college students were required to design a simple crawling worm using planning, self-monitoring and self-evaluation processes to solve contradictive problems. To enhance the efficiency of problem solving, one needs to practice meta-cognition based on an application of related scientific concepts. The objective of this study, then, was to analyze the physics concepts employed by the students as they completed a hands-on project named “Crawling Worm,” during which they had to overcome problems encountered by the requirements of their design as well as those brought on by competition. Based on the analysis of the participants’ working portfolios and on reviews and interviews by engineering professors, the results of this study show that the crawling worm design competition encouraged the practice of problem solving, and it facilitated the learning of physics concepts such as friction, torque, four bar link, material properties, and so on.

[[abstract]]In this modern and technologically dependent society, people seek to improve human performance, get higher productivity and increase user satisfaction with technologies. In Chinese society, Chinese Idiom learning plays an important role in vocabulary learning which cultural and social functions are involved. Therefore, an online game named ‘Chinese Idioms String Up Puzzle’ was developed by the Digital Game-Based Learning Laboratory, National Taiwan Normal University in Taiwan to motivate students to learn Chinese Idiom. A survey was conducted to examine participants’ anxiety, interest and cognitive load by using this new computer-assisted game. According to the survey, students felt this new program is interesting and would like to play again in the future. For those students who believe anxiety helps their performance, and for those students whose degree of anxiety lowered after completing the test, they tend to have greater interest in playing the game. Findings of the Partial Least Squares (PLS) contribute to an expanded understanding of both psychological anxiety and somatic anxiety influence on their cognitive load, whereas both anxieties was not significantly related to their playing interest. In addition, the study results indicated that the higher degree of psychological and somatic anxiety, the greater cognitive load of the participants.

How to shape the innovative culture in your organization

    No full text
[[abstract]]Creativity thrives on diversity and a plurality of views. Yet, ironically, the most readily available literature on creativity reflects a creativity monoculture, as if there were only one standpoint from which to explore and develop creativity. This is illogical. The explosion in global communications might suggest an increase in the exchange of views and information about creativity. So far, this doesn't seem to have happened. The aim of this internationally authored book is to begin to correct this imbalance. Some if its authors focus solely on creativity in their own country; some demonstrate the influence of different cultural perspectives on how they approach creativity. Others explicitly highlight the differences between Eastern and Western or African and European viewpoints on creativity.
