Visiting doctors’ offices: A comparison of Korean and Taiwanese children’s narrative development
[[abstract]]Research Findings: This study aimed to explain age and cultural differences in the narrative development of 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old Korean and Taiwanese children. The participants comprised 140 children of middle-class, two-parent families, half from each cultural group. Children were individually interviewed about their experience of visiting doctors' offices. The measured variables were the total number of clauses, the total number of conjunctions, the total number of internal state terms, and the developmental level of the narrative structure. The results suggested that age was related to all 4 variables. Different narrative skills exhibited different developmental trajectories in the early phase of narrative development. Also, Taiwanese children were more likely to incorporate internal state terms into their narratives than were Korean children. Finally, there appeared to be a developmental leap in Korean 5-year-olds' performance of narrative structures. Compared with Taiwanese children, the development of narrative structures for Korean 5-year-olds was more advanced. Practice or Policy: Results are discussed in relation to the effects of local educational and childrearing practices. Implications for school readiness and theories are included.

單親家庭青少年的成長歷程和生活脈絡之研究
[[abstract]]Using quantitative and qualitative research methods, this research project proposes to study the effects of parental divorce on adolescent growth trajectories and life context. Based on previous theories and research, there are the long-term effects of parental divorce on children. In addition, adolescents do not live in the social vacuum. Their development and adjustment are deeply influenced by family, peer, school, community. Thus, utilizing the data from Taiwan Youth Project (TYP), Wave-1 interview in 2000 toWave-8 interview in 2007, this research attempts to explore whether parental divorce affects adolescent growth trajectories, and whether life context affects the impact of parental divorce on adolescents. Furthermore, in order to explore the life experience of single-parent families, this study will collect data from the interviews of single parents and children.
藥用與食用桃金孃科植物對第二型糖尿病胰島素阻抗研究、蛋白質體學探討與降血糖功能性評估
[[abstract]]The incurrence rate of diabetes becomes higher and higher in recent years. Reports from Department of Health in Taiwan indicate that diabetes is the fourth major cause of death in the country with a patient number as high as 1 to 1.2 million in 2005. More than 95 % among all the cases belong to type II diabetes. A great deal of money is spent in the world to develop new anti-diabetes medicine and natural health-care products each year. “Building Taiwan into a Technological Island of Chinese Herbal Medicine” has become one of the major economic tasks in Taiwan. Success in the development of herbal medicine with local characteristics will definitely bring in great economic interests to this country. The family Mytaceae has about 100 genera containing approximately 3000 species of plants in total. Many of them are very suitable to grow in Taiwan. For examples, Psidium guajava Linn. and Syzygium jambos L. are economic crops and are also used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine to cure diabetes; Callistemon citrinus Curt., Rhodomyrtus tomentose Ait., Eugenia uniflora L., Eucalyptus maculata Hook., Syzygium formosanum Hay., and Rhodomyrtus tomentosa Ait. are even listed as medicinal plants by Chinese Medicine Committee in the Department of Health. Results of our NSC projects conducted in the last two years proved the leaf extract of indigenous guava is effective in reducing the blood sugar level in Type II diabetic rats. These projects didn’t cover other Myrtaceae plants though. As a matter of fact, it is possible that some edible or medicinal Myrtaceae plants other than indigenous guava are also effective in curing Type II diabetes. For example, Syzygium jambos (L.) Alston is used in India as a folk medicine to reduce blood sugar level and to cure diabetes, whereas wax apple in the same genus has not been investigated for the function. Therefore, we believe that it is worthwhile to conduct a systematic investigation into the anti-diabetes effect of Myrtaceae plants, and the mechanism. In the 2007 NSC project, we successfully established the liver cell culture (clone 9) insulin resistance model. The model can be used as the primary screening platform for anti- Type II diabetes food or medicine. In the present proposal, (1) insulin resistant cell model and glucose uptake test will be used to screen Myrtaceae plants, including Shijiba, Yueba and the rest eight edible cultivars of guava, wax apples, Syzygium jambos (L.) Alston, and Chinese medicinal plants Syzygium formosanum Hay., Eugenia uniflora L., etc. in the family, based on the effectiveness to alleviate Type II diabetes; (2) proteome study will be performed to elucidate the mechanism for Myrtaceae plants to reduce insulin resistance in the cell model; and (3) the active components obtained from Myrtaceae plants with the potential to reduce insulin resistance will be fed to Type II diabetic animals for reconfirmation. Upon the completion of the entire project, Myrtaceae plants with Type II diabetes alleviation effect will be identified, the feasibility to use these plants as the raw materials in the making of anti-Type II diabetes medicine or health food will be clarified, and their antihyperglycemic mechanism will be known.
