    A bright path under Juno's footprint

    editorial reviewedJuno's UltraViolet Spectrograph captures spectrally resolved images of Jupiter's aurorae by scanning a narrow swath across the planet for every rotation of the spacecraft. A mirror at the entrance of the instrument allows us to aim for specific targets up to 30° away from the spin plane. Following a pre-programmed plan designed for each perijove, the instrument can either stare at a given feature for several spins or create maps as complete as possible by shifting the mirror every few spins. Consequently, Juno-UVS does not look at its own magnetic footprint all the time, complicating direct comparisons with in situ instruments. Here we describe a method to recover brightness profiles as complete and as synchronous as possible along the Juno magnetic footprint track. Some additional data products are also built, such as profile of the color ratio between wavelength ranges unabsorbed by hydrocarbons and absorbed ones. Combined with the emission angle, which we also record, this ratio allows us to derive profiles of the mean energy of precipitating electrons. The electron mean energy, and the energy flux deduced from the UV brightness then allow us to compute profiles of the Hall and Pedersen conductance below Juno’s magnetic footpath. Finally, another time series extracted from the UVS data is the noise rate associated with the radiation (mostly relativistic electrons) penetrating the instrument. We will show how this data product allows us to identify bursts of relativistic electrons above Jupiter's poles and connect them to specific regions of the aurorae and/or of the magnetosphere

    Un double papyrus lunaire et solaire ? Le manuscrit de Nebhepet (Papyrus Turin, Cat. 1768)

    peer reviewedThe papyrus of Nebhepet (Turin, Museo Egizio, Cat. 1768) displays singular material and iconotextual features. Probably reused – as attested by the erasing of an earlier name – it was composed by three different scribes, the handwriting of one of whom is recognizable on other papyri. The manuscript was made by joining two papyrus rolls, one resembling a Book of the Dead, the other an “Amduat”, and thus combines the iconography of the two main types of funerary manuscript of the time. The iconography includes many uncommon lunar motives – moon disks but also Wedjat-Eyes – centred on a group of mummiform figures inspired by the Litany of the Sun and including the deceased looking behind his back. Iconographic and textual indexes – in particular the use of the epithet rḫ ꜥn, “who knows the return” – suggest that the Litany of the Sun motif is here reinterpreted as a representation of the crescent moon. The deceased thus follows two paths of regeneration: a solar one, linked to the Going Out by Day and oriented toward the exterior of the manuscript; and a lunar one, centred on the core of the papyrus. This uncommon astral – solar and lunar – model is also found on the mummy board of Nebhepet (Paris, Louvre, E 13047), which displays very personal literary elaboration on the name of the deceased. The examination of this burial assemblage thus reveals great coherence and originality in the conception of a solar-lunar burial formulated by different artists.     A new spring element for steel joints based on the components method

    peer reviewedThe Component Method (CM), as formulated in Eurocode 3, provides an efficient framework for characterizing the structural response of steel joints, serving as a viable alternative to complex finite element (FE) simulations. However, conventional CM-based models overlook key aspects such as group effects, component interactions, and the variation of shear force along the column web panel height, which are systematically integrated into the proposed enhanced finite element formulation. A major advancement of the proposed approach lies in the implementation of static condensation, which reduces the computational complexity of the model while maintaining its predictive accuracy. It ensures a more practical and computationally efficient tool for design engineers. The model’s validity is demonstrated through comparisons with experimental data and analytical solutions, confirming its compliance with Eurocode 3 and its applicability to various loading conditions.</p

    Human Interaction with Urban Morphology under the Influence of Urban Heat Island: A Systematic Review

    peer reviewedOutdoor urban spaces are essential to residents’ well-being, yet their thermal comfort is increasingly compromised by urbanization and climate change. Although urban morphology has been widely studied, its effects on human thermal comfort within microclimates remain inadequately understood. This study addresses this gap by examining the interactions between urban morphology, microclimate, and pedestrian thermal comfort. We employed a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA framework, alongside parametric thinking using General Morphological Analysis (GMA) to systematically explore how variations in urban form parameters influence microclimatic conditions and pedestrian thermal comfort. The study’s objectives were threefold: (1) to systematically analyze the existing literature, identify key trends, and uncover knowledge gaps; (2) to explore the psychological, physical, and social factors influencing thermal perception; and (3) to assess how urban morphological features affect microclimate and pedestrian thermal comfort. To address these challenges, we developed a novel framework, Design Tools, which quantitatively links urban morphology parameters, outdoor thermal indices, and pedestrian comfort. By prioritizing outdoor thermal comfort in urban design, this approach offers valuable insights to enhance climate-responsive design strategies and improve pedestrian well-being amid the growing challenges of urban heat islands.11. To evaluate whether atmospheric circulation on large spatial scales explains the differing SMB trends at eight East Antarctic ice rises, we assimilated ice core SMB records within a high-resolution downscaled atmospheric model, while incorporating radar-derived SMB constraints to quantify local observation errors. The reconstruction captures the diverse variability from SMB records but may over-fit by introducing unrealistic wind spatial heterogeneity. While local errors are quantified, they might not cover all uncertainties.     peer reviewedAbstractThe SisClever Process facilitates the simultaneous separation of multicomponent systems, achieving high concentrations and purities of individual products. A notable application is the hydrometallurgical separation of metals using cation‐exchange extractants, where the pH is systematically varied along the counter‐current process. The process is modeled based on phase equilibria and validated through experiments separating Zn2+ and Co2+. The efficiency of the process is demonstrated for the separation of a complex mixture of rare‐earth metals, where only roughly a third of equilibrium stages is required compared to an optimized proposal from literature. Possible applications in recycling, generalization to other unit operations, as well as limitations are discussed
