Population and habitat assessments for conservation: Comparing national strategies for Canadian boreal caribou and Norwegian wild reindeer
peer reviewedHabitat loss and fragmentation are major threats to biodiversity. While essential, demographic data alone may be insufficient to rapidly detect habitat-driven population declines and identify efficient management actions. This study explores how conservation strategies can use and integrate demographic and environmental information to detect, monitor and counter population declines. By comparing two extensive conservation strategies for Rangifer tarandus in Canada and Norway, we draw key insights for more comprehensive and actionable strategies. Conservation strategies often use multicriteria approaches combining population and habitat metrics, but seldom succeed in formally integrating these through a causal understanding of habitat-population relationships. The Canadian strategy probabilistically assesses the viability of boreal caribou populations both through direct population modeling, and by statistically linking habitat disturbance to recruitment - thus indirectly capturing habitat-mediated changes in predator-prey dynamics and their consequences on caribou vital rates. The Norwegian strategy develops an expert-based approach to score the quality of wild reindeer populations by combining assessments of habitat quality, connectivity, demography, genetics and health. While the Norwegian assessment is more locally anchored and explores a wider range of drivers, the Canadian one is more targeted and provides a statistical conversion rate between habitat and population metrics. Both assessments serve as a basis for follow-up management actions. This study highlights the need to intensify research to quantify cumulative anthropogenic impacts on the loss of functionally connected habitat, and their consequences on population viability. This would enable early-warning systems for assessing population declines, and help shape more targeted prevention, mitigation and restoration actions
MiR-183-5p-enriched Endothelial Extracellular Vesicles: Key Players in Pre-Metastatic Niche Formation in Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer (BC) remains one of the most prevalent cancers globally. Although primary tumors can often be treated successfully, metastatic BC remains incurable and is the primary cause of mortality. Previous work from our group discovered that endothelial cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) enriched in miR-142-5p, miR-183-5p, and miR-222-3p—collectively termed “miR-TAM”— promote macrophage polarization towards a pro-tumorigenic M2-like phenotype, thereby enhancing tumor growth in murine BC models. However, the role of miR-TAM in metastasis, particularly in pre-metastatic niche (PMN) formation, has not been investigated.
To address this gap, we conducted both in vitro and in vivo studies. We treated macrophage and fibroblast cell lines—key contributors to PMN development—with miR-TAM-enriched EVs. This treatment led to a marked upregulation of several pro-tumorigenic genes, including Csf3, Cxcl1, Col3a1, Il-1β, and Ccl3. In parallel, we administered miR-TAM-enriched EVs peritumourally every two days to 4T1 tumour-bearing mice. Strikingly, treated mice exhibited a significant reduction in pulmonary CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ T cell populations, indicating the establishment of an immunosuppressive microenvironment conducive to metastatic colonization.
In conclusion, our findings reveal a previously unrecognized role of miR-TAM-enriched endothelial EVs in promoting PMN formation and metastatic progression in breast cancer. These insights suggest that miR-TAM-enriched EVs may represent novel therapeutic targets to intercept metastasis in BC patients
The periglacial deposit of the ancient brickyard of Rome lez Durbuy
This work reports the morpho-sedimentary description of the deposit that was partially exploited by the Rome lez Durbuy brickyard. Observations were made on the working faces in ~1970. The different lithostratigraphic units consist of local schist debris and allochthonous loess. Traces of volcanic ash allow the formation of the deposit to be placed during the last cold period of the Quaternary (Würm/Weichsel)
Automatic proofs in combinatorial game theory
In this talk, we consider Wythoff’s game and many variations studied by Fraenkel and others. In particular, we present Walnut, a software commonly used in combinatorics on words, and show how to use it to obtain short automatic proofs of several results from the literature. We also prove a conjecture stated by Duchêne et al. regarding additional moves not changing the set of the P-positions of Wythoff’s game. We further state some new conjectures related to redundant moves. This work is linked with non-standard numeration systems for which addition is recognizable by a finite automaton.
