Recognising the importance of dual-use technologies as well as the challenges specifically related to their implementation in EUfunded projects, this report offers insights with concrete examples and case studies on how dual-use research and innovation can work in practice. Microstructural and defects investigation of AlCrFeMnNi-based high entropy alloy fabricated via laser powder bed fusion
peer reviewedAbstract. Al0.15CrFe2.9Mn1.7Ni2.1Mo0.2 high entropy alloy (HEA) powder’s mixture was prepared manually by blending 316L stainless steel with elemental powders. The mixture was processed through Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) to achieve a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure, aiming to enhance corrosion resistance. Since the powders used were not designed for LPBF, this study investigates the effects of powder characteristics and scanning strategies on the resulting microstructure with a focus on the defects assessment. After optimizing the processing parameter window through single tracks printing, the scanning strategy is selected while varying laser power, scanning speed and remelting step. Microstructure analysis of the printed samples was conducted by combining Optical Microscopy (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The analysis revealed the presence of hot cracks and unmelted agglomerates of refractory elements, and other compositional heterogeneities in all the samples. The findings provide a basis for developing optimized printing strategies and producing defects-free printed samples

EUROVISCO Good Medical Practice Recommendations for the Use of Viscosupplementation with Hyaluronic Acid in the Management of Knee Osteoarthritis.
peer reviewed[en] OBJECTIVE: Viscosupplementation (VS) by intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid (HA) is a commonly used treatment of knee osteoarthritis. However, there are no clear recommendations for its use in clinical situations not usually addressed in therapeutic guidelines.
DESIGN: Members of the European Viscosupplementation Consensus Group (EUROVISCO), made up of rheumatologists, orthopedic surgeons, and rehabilitation physicians from seven European countries, were asked to make a therapeutic decision on 30 clinical scenarios based on their clinical experience and data from the literature, using the Delphi method. For each scenario, the strength of agreement and the level of consensus were calculated by the chairman of the group.
RESULTS: The expert panel reached consensus on 18 of the 30 clinical scenarios proposed. According to the experts, the factors that most influence the decision to use VS with HA to treat knee osteoarthritis are the nature and severity of symptoms, the presence of comorbidity, the absence of therapeutic alternatives, and the patient's refusal to undergo knee arthroplasty. Obesity and an advanced radiological degree of osteoarthritis have been identified as the two main factors for poor response to VS with HA and should be considered before any decision is made to viscosupplement.
CONCLUSION: This set of recommendations, based on common clinical scenarios, is intended to help practitioners make decisions about HA VS in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee

Prehabilitation to mitigate postintensive care syndrome in surgical patients: The rationale for a peri-critical illness pathway involving anaesthesiologists and intensive care physicians.
peer reviewedThe post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) refers to the long-term physical, psychological and cognitive impairments experienced by intensive care unit (ICU) survivors, while PICS-Family (PICS-F) affects their family members. Despite preventive strategies during the ICU stay, PICS remains a significant concern impacting survivors' quality of life, increasing the healthcare costs, and complicating recovery. Prehabilitation offers a promising approach to mitigating PICS and PICS-F, especially when the ICU stay can be anticipated, such as in the case of major surgery. Recent literature indicates that prehabilitation - interventions designed to enhance patients' functional capacity before critical illness - may mitigate the risk and severity of PICS. Studies have demonstrated that prehabilitation programs can improve muscle strength, reduce anxiety levels and enhance overall quality of life in ICU survivors. Family prehabilitation (prehabilitation-F) is also introduced as a potential intervention to help families to cope with the stress of critical illness. This article aims to explore the role of multimodal prehabilitation and post-ICU follow-up in preventing and managing PICS and PICS-F, focusing on improving patient outcomes, supporting families and optimising healthcare resources. Combining prehabilitation with post-ICU follow-up in peri-critical care clinics could streamline resources and improve outcomes, creating a holistic care pathway. These clinics, focused on both pre-ICU and post-ICU care, would thus address PICS from multiple angles. However, the heterogeneity of patient populations and prehabilitation protocols present challenges in standardising the interventions. Further research is necessary to establish optimal prehabilitation strategies tailored to individual patient needs and to demonstrate their utility in terms of patient outcome
Structure floristique, stocks potentiels de carbone et dynamiques dans les systèmes agroforestiers à base de cacaoyers en Côte d'Ivoire (Afrique de l'Ouest)
peer reviewedWith about 46% of global production, Côte d'Ivoire is the world's leading producer of cocoa beans. However, this production contributes to deforestation, exacerbating the effects of climate change. In response to this observation, this study aims to deepen knowledge on the contribution of agroforestry systems in cocoa production areas in Côte d'Ivoire to atmospheric carbon storage. These main areas are the Centre-West, SouthWest , and West. In these areas, floristic richness was determined in 115 plots. Carbon stocks in living biomass, dead matter, and soil were evaluated. The dynamics of carbon stocks with age were also determined. The results revealed that the West area contains the most diversified cocoa agroforests, with 161 species compared to 71 and 119 in the Centre-West and SouthWest , respectively. Entandrophragma angolense, Nesogordonia papaverifera, and Sterculia oblonga, common to these areas, are on the IUCN Red List. Carbon stock varies by area, its history, the practices present, and especially the associated species. Thus, in the former cocoa production zone (Centre-West) and the current main production zone (South-West), Elaeis guineensis is the main carbon reservoir, with 25.576 tC.ha⁻ 1 in the Centre-West and 36.862 tC.ha⁻ 1 in the SouthWest. In the West, local trees form the main carbon reservoir with 11.701 tC.ha⁻ 1. The dynamics of total carbon stocks show heterogeneous changes in production areas according to the different stages of development of agroforestry systems. This is evidence of the complexity of carbon flow and the dynamics of cocoa systems, which are strongly influenced by the sociology of the producers
