Challenges facing school management teams in implementing teenage pregnancy policy in Vhembe District, Limpopo Province

    No full text
Teenage pregnancy in South African schools poses a serious management and leadership challenge. The Policy on the Measures for the Prevention and Management of Learner Pregnancy (MPMLP) negates what the South African Constitution says that every child has the right to education and on the other hand it puts the School Management Teams (SMTs) on a catch- 22 situation”. The main objective of this study was, therefore, to explore the challenges faced by the SMTs in implementing the teenage pregnancy policy at selected secondary schools in the Vhembe District, Limpopo Province. This study explored how SMTs perceive the Policy on the MPMLP. A mixed method approach was utilised to collect data from SMTs in schools that are located in Vhembe District. Data were collected through telephonic interviewing of the SMTs making use of questionnaire. Data were collected during the Covid-19 restrictions telephonically to avoid viral infections. The study findings reveal that the policy documents are not available in schools and school managers are not trained on how to deal with pregnant learners at schools. Furthermore, the Department of Education did not provide its schools with guidelines regarding management of learner pregnancy; as a result, schools are free to develop and implement their learner pregnant policies as they wish. In some schools parents are required to accompany their pregnant learners to school up until they give birth. The study also established that pregnant learners are victims of expulsion. This study also found out that there is a lack of sex education in schools. The study recommends that intervention programmes be developed that include training of SMTs, school governing bodies, and educators to effectively educate and manage pregnant learners. It is further recommended that sexuality education should be part of the syllabus in Life Orientation Subject. The study concludes that the Policy on MPMLP should be revisited and be in line with the constitution of the country, where the rights of learners to education are taken into cognisance and that the SMTs should be thoroughly trained on the implementation of the policy.D. A persuasive educational technology-based tool for motivating junior secondary school female students in Nigeria to enrol in STEM

    Get PDF
Text in EnglishBackground: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields have made significant contributions to our modern world's advancements. However, the number of women in STEM professions in Nigeria is overwhelmingly low. Concerns have been raised about the growing demand for STEM skills and the shortage of human resources to meet this demand. There is advocacy to encourage female students to pursue STEM disciplines to meet the demand for STEM skills. Despite this, no research has been conducted in Nigeria to increase female students' enrolment in STEM using the attitude and behaviour change approach, also known as the persuasion approach. This is despite the strong support for research that focuses on the affective aspect of STEM learning, which deals with students’ values, and believes to encourage female students' enrolment in STEM pathways. Aim: The main aim of this thesis is to develop a framework that guides the design of persuasive educational technologies (PET) based on the persuasion approach to motivate junior secondary school female students in Nigeria to enrol in STEM classes. Setting: The participants were drawn from three different secondary schools in Nigeria's Kano State. The research delved into the natural environment of the participants to ensure that contextually rich information was gathered from them to inform the study. Method: Data was collected from the research participants through interviews and a focus group session and analysed using a qualitative research approach. Following data analysis, the Design Science Research (DSR) strategy was used to guide the framework design. The DSR strategy's rigorous iteration phases ensured that the framework was redefined several times until a rigorous artefact was produced. Results: According to the study’s findings, certain external factors (school factors, family factors, and cultural factors) influence female students' attitudes toward STEM professions, and it is their attitude towards STEM professions that guides their decision to pursue a STEM pathway. A motivational push from a PET can encourage female students to pursue STEM careers. Conclusion: A PET tool developed following the PET4STEM framework has the potential to change female students' attitudes toward STEM professions and consequently their decision to pursue STEM careers in the future. The theoretical contribution of the study is the creation of a new PET4STEM framework that provides information on key components of a PET tool to promote STEM enrolment among Nigerian junior secondary school female students. Second, it establishes, empirically, the factors that influence female students' enrolment in STEM classes. Finally, it proposes convincing strategies for combating female students' negative perceptions of STEM subjects. Teachers, parents, and researchers who are unable to develop a PET tool can use these strategies.Ph. D. (Information Systems)School of Computin

Experimental and numerical analysis of the Microstructure and mechanical properties of unidirectional glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a numerical model to predict the pattern and features of the fracture surface and to understand the mechanisms and cause of the failure. Various fiber orientations of 0◦, 90◦, 0◦/90◦ and ± 45◦ were utilized in the production of unidirectional glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy composites via the vacuum bagging technique. The mechanical properties of the manufactured composites were evaluated by measuring parameters including tensile strength, compressive strength, flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength. High resolution scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the mechanisms of fracture in laminates. The mechanical properties of the composite material were found to be considerably improved when a unidirectional 0◦ fiber orientation was used, as compared to other fiber orientations. This was true for tensile, compressive, flexural and interlaminar shear loading modes. The composite laminates demonstrated several modes of breaking, including fibers pulling away from the matrix, holes in the matrix and river flow lines, depending on the direction of the fibers. The outcomes of the numerical simulation demonstrate a high level of fidelity with experimental findings. This study provides a valuable reference for predicting numerical analysis of the microstructure and mechanical properties

Exploring challenges in the use of the provided information communication technology in schools of Seplan : a case study

    No full text
Text in EnglishThis study aimed to explore the challenges in the use of provided ICT equipment in the schools of Seplan Circuit. The DBE initiated numerous programmes of providing ICT equipment in schools of Seplan Circuit for over a decade now. Furthermore, it has partnered with numerous stakeholders to ensure that every school should be provided with ICT equipment and that every teacher must have their laptop. However, some identified schools have shown that the provided ICT equipment have not been used. That constituted the central problem to be addressed by this study because there is a need to establish why schools do not use the provided ICT equipment when global acknowledgments agree that the use of ICT equipment in schools is significant in transforming the education of a nation. A qualitative research approach was implemented to explore the challenges. A case study design involving four secondary schools from the Seplan Circuit was considered appropriate for this study. The qualitative research tool that was adopted was semi-structured interviews, while non-participant observation was employed to check the status of ICT equipment. From each school, four teachers and the principal were considered for the structured interviews. Analysis of the data responses was performed using content analysis. Empirical evidence from this study revealed that most secondary schools did not use the provided ICT equipment. It emerged that although schools were provided with a lot of ICT equipment, they had very limited exposure and training on how to use them; others pointed out that traditional methods of teaching were the best, hence, their limited implementation thereof. School principals further pointed out the extra burden that arises from the use of provided ICT equipment in terms of security, and extra costs to the school for maintenance and accountability. Based on the literature review and findings, the study recommends the collaborative design of an improved ICT training programme is important both at the school level and Departmental level. The study also recommends that more financial resources need to be allocated to ICT equipment so that schools will be able to repair and maintain their ICT equipment. Further study can be conducted while teachers are performing lesson presentation.M. Ed.Educational Studie

'Borrowing' Parks : an analysis of organised events and attachment to Urban Parks, Johannesburg

    No full text
Text in English with summaries and keywords in English, Afrikaans and SesothoSince the start of planned park developments, parks have been considered the spatial and social ‘fixes’ to the cultural, political, economic, and environmental challenges of cities. This is even more pronounced in dynamic cities of the global South. Steering away from romanticised ‘lungs of the city’ and ‘city escape’ conceptualizations, parks are also productive and dynamic spaces in which a variety of ideals, expectations and needs are enacted and negotiated daily by different ‘park actors’ and practices. One such ‘park practice’ is the set of organised events hosted in public parks. This research employs the ever-popular parkrun ‘move-ment’ as its case study. The parkrun has since its inception in 2004 in the UK, ‘borrowed’ parks and park-like venues to accommodate thousands of avid participants and volunteers weekly on Saturday mornings for a five-kilometre walk, jog or run. Today, it takes place across 22 countries globally. Contextualized within the city of Johannesburg and during the Covid-19 pandemic, this mixed-methods research draws on primary and secondary data from online questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, social media and online desktop research to unpack three unique parkrun case studies, namely the younger and smaller Mapetla parkrun and the older and larger Roodepoort and Delta parkruns. The research explores how the parkrun ‘move-ment’ has ‘event-tualised’ and resulted in an indirect (re)discovery and (re)appreciation of parks through the creation of a temporary event space, as a ‘third place’ and ‘communitas’. For participants and volunteers, the event carries immense significance, with a strong attachment underpinned mostly by social and community-related benefits. The ‘borrowed’ park is synonymous with the parkrun, while park attachment and sense of belonging relate mostly to the fostered attachment to the event and community. This is especially the case for the Mapetla and Roodepoort parkruns. For the Delta parkrun, the park itself provides a wider variety of alternative core functions. Event and park attachment are also directly enhanced by event loyalty. However, both a positive event and park attachment, as facilitated by the parkrun, do not necessarily translate into an investment in park maintenance and positive environmental behaviours for purposes and at times outside of the parkrun. Active environmental care is motivated mostly by the need to ensure the sustainability of the event. Nevertheless, the ‘borrowed’ parks benefit from the subsequent knock-on effects of the weekly parkrun influx that include but are not limited to donation drives, community celebrations, positive park marketing and clean-ups. Go tloga mathomong a maano a go tlhabolla diphaka tša bosetšhaba, diphaka tša tikologo di ka šomišwa bjalo ka mafelo a boiketlo le go swara dikopano le setšhaba go rarolla mathata a motsesetoropo ao a amanago le tša setšo, dipolotiki le ekonomi. Search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons in final states with two same-sign or three leptons with the ATLAS detector

    No full text
Abstract A search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons is reported. The search targets a final state with exactly two leptons with same-sign electric charge or at least three leptons without any charge requirement. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Multiple signal regions are defined, targeting several SUSY simplified models yielding the desired final states. A single control region is used to constrain the normalisation of the WZ + jets background. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of several supersymmetric models featuring R-parity conservation or R-parity violation, yielding exclusion limits surpassing those from previous searches. In models considering gluino (squark) pair production, gluino (squark) masses up to 2.2 (1.7) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level

Inflation dynamics in Uganda during the post-independence era

    No full text
This article provides a comprehensive chronological analysis of Uganda's inflation performance and policy reforms aimed at reducing inflation and stabilising the economy from 1970 to 2021. The impetus for this article lies in the growing interest in Uganda as a prototype for other developing countries grappling with high inflation rates. To achieve the objective, the study adopts a rigorous methodology involving a detailed analysis of selected statistical and academic literature. Uganda faced persistent hyperinflation for much of the 1970s and 1980s and early 1990s. In response, the Ugandan government implemented a series of inflation policy reforms aimed at reducing inflation and stabilizing the economy. The policy reforms in Uganda can be analysed episodically through five distinct periods, starting with the first 10 years after independence (1962-1971), followed by 15 years of political instability (1971- 1985), 10 years of recovery (1986-1995), 10 years of economic growth and poverty reduction (1996-2006), and the most recent episode of reforms consolidation (2007-2021). The impact of these reforms has been significant, with inflation rates falling to single digits and the economy experiencing sustained growth. The decline in inflation has helped to stabilize the economy, reduce the cost of living for Ugandans, and attract foreign investment. The study underscores the importance of implementing sound macroeconomic policies, strong political will and leadership, investing in infrastructure, diversifying the economies, communicating effectively with the public, and cooperating regionally to build a robust and sustainable economy that benefits all its citizens.Economic

Missiology as encounterology : Pentecostal considerations

    No full text
Encounterology is a missiological approach to the theology of religions that was developed by J.N.J. Kritzinger – a South African missiologist. The approach recognises the encounter between people of different faiths or religions such as Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism and others. Encounterology is a theology of a particular interfaith encounter that is relevant to the theology of religions. Encounterology is discussed here as a theology relevant to addressing the differences that exist between Christian denominations and their theological approaches. This article engages encounterology from a Pentecostal theological perspective to develop an authentic and transformative Pentecostal theology of encounters. This article builds from the Pentecostal theology of encounters with the Holy Spirit and fellow human beings into the development of the theology of interreligious encounters. In addition, encounterology is relevant in Pentecostalism in the encounters between the movement and other Christian traditions. Therefore, the theology of religions should consider not only exclusivist, inclusivist and pluralist approaches, but also encounterology as an authentic and transformative approach for both interreligious and ecumenical dialogue.Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiolog

A phenomenological study on violence perpetrated by learners and management towards level 1 educators in township schools of Soshanguve Tshwane North District

    No full text
This study explores forms of violence perpetrated by school management teams and learners against post-level one educators in township schools in Soshanguve, South Africa. A qualitative research method was used to access deeper information on the topic. A phenomenological thematic analysis was used to analyse data. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather information. The sample was selected using the purposive sampling method for the convenience of the researcher and participants. The sample consisted of twenty educators from four high schools in Soshanguve Tshwane North District. Five educators from each school were interviewed, and at least two males and two females were part of the sample. Participants were protected through ethical considerations where their identities were not revealed, there was transparency from the researcher, and consent was requested from participants. Ethical clearance was acquired from the University of South Africa. Permission to conduct the study was granted by the Department of Education in the Tshwane North District. The major findings of this study revealed four forms of violence experienced by post-level one educators, which included physical and verbal violence, financial violence and sexual violence. The study then looked at factors influencing violence, including contextual factors, socioeconomic factors, and the lack of employment opportunities for educators. Impacts of the violence on post-level one educators included physical impacts, psychological impacts, and financial impacts. The study recommended strategies that could help reduce the violence, including strategies that could be implemented by the Department of Education, by the school and by the parents. The study recommended that the district officials visit the schools regularly. These visits can monitor the behaviour of SMT members towards post-level one educators, and it can encourage professionalism within the school. District officials should conduct meetings to discuss the learners’ results; this will reduce the verbal violence endured by educators during accounting sessions for marks.M. Ed. Abstracts in English, Xhosa and ZuluThis study highlights the importance of costumes and dress codes first as means of cultural construction, and secondly as tools for social commentary art. Its main aim was to discern whether culturally conceived perceptions about the meaning and interpretation of a costume affect the message a performing artist is conveying. The objective was to answer the question of whether the performance can convey the same message in social commentary art without the performer’s chosen costumes as the vital elements of the actualisation of artworks. The diverse and open-ended interpretation and meaning of clothing were interrogated through the application of the theory of the sublime and Nicholas Bourriaud’s concept of relational aesthetics. The study made the argument that when viewers interpret the meaning of artworks that utilise clothes, they are influenced by their prior or cultural knowledge, leading to multiple interpretations of messages and meanings. Six artists were selected to be informants and subjects of this study. The first group included Steven Cohen, Wezile Mgibe, and Carin Bester, who were chosen due to their performances that comment on social issues and utilise clothing. The second group consisted of Mary Sibande, Yinka Shonibare, and Nandipha Mntambo selected for the performative nature and use of clothing in their various artworks. Focus group interviews were conducted as the primary data collection method for this study to firstly decipher the messages and meanings of the six chosen artists’ works. Secondly, to discover whether there is a relationship between the performing artists' intention and the viewers' interpretations, as well as to ascertain the impact of clothing on artistic expression as culturally constructed objects with diverse meanings. This study postulated that clothes as culturally constructed objects are interpreted differently when used in art, subverting socially unjustifiable intolerant behaviour as well as socially constructed biases. It further recommended a follow-up exercise aimed at measuring and validating the impact of agency through performance art as a means for social commentary toward social transformation.Olu phando luqaphela ukubaluleka kweekhostyum neendlela zokunxiba okokuqala njengezixhobo zokuphuhlisa inkcubeko, okwesibini njengezixhobo zovakalisozimvo ngezentlalo kubugcisa obenziwa eqongeni.
