Investigating current and potential expansion, socioeconomic impact and climate smart management of Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) in the Rift Valley lakes of Ethiopia
This thesis presents a study on water hyacinths' (WH) (Eichhornia Crassipes) current and potential expansion, socioeconomic impact, and climate-smart management approach in two selected lakes in Ethiopia. The study main goal was to assess an integrated and effective climate-smart management approach that reduces the impact of WH in the Rift Valley of Ethiopia. Field observation and survey were conducted to evaluate the WH's current distribution, potential expansion, and impact. Further data were collected through a household survey, Key Informant Interview, Focus Group Discussion, Landsat images, and field and laboratory water sample tests to characterize the lake water physicochemical nature at WH-infected sites and non-infected sites. During WH's socioeconomic and environmental impact assessment, a total of 413 households were sampled, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, and Multivariate test. Water samples from four different locations selected on each lake, were analyzed for the selected physicochemical properties such as phosphate, nitrate-nitrogen, Acidity or Basicity(pH), Biological oxygen demand (BOD5), temperature (T in 0C), and selected heavy metals such as Chromium (Cr), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Zinc (Zn), and Copper (Cu). The collected data subjected to statistical analysis was compared using the ANOVA test to assess the impact of water hyacinth causing deviation from the normal level of lake water physicochemical character. According to land use and land cover data, the water hyacinth's rate of spread was 0.56% in Lake Koka and 0.95% in Lake Ziway. The study showed that the spread of water hyacinth increased drastically between 2013 and 2025 at both Lake Koka and Lake Ziway. Despite the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of Lake Ziway, this study found no significant (p > 0.05) variation in the concentrations of Cu, EC, pH, and water temperature between wet and dry seasons in either lake. Variations in Zn concentration and other physicochemical parameters (EC, BOD5, COD, nitrate, phosphate) between low, medium, and high levels of water hyacinth were significant in both lakes (p<0.05). Water hyacinth has shown significant phytoremediation nature during wet and dry seasons. The lowest average heavy metal, phosphate, and nitrate concentrations and significant pH and temperature variations were observed in Lakes Koka and Lake Ziway, among water hyacinth and other grass-infested sites. In the Lake Koka district, WH caused food insecurity to 51% of the participants by reducing food productivity and health distress to 98.5% through exposure to vector disease. In Lake Ziway district, it exposed 81.6% of the participants to food insecurity and 99.5% to health distress. In both lakes, WH affected the fishing industry according to 99.8% of the participants. In terms of crop production, at Koka, maize production was significantly affected, ᵡ2 (1, = 413) = 117.01, p<.001, while at Ziway cabbage production was significantly affected, ᵡ2 (1, N= 413) =6.36, p<.001. There was a significant difference in annual income level, household leader's age, and recovery cost according to household family size, F (9, 623.18) =14.38, p<.001; Wilk's Λ=.632, partial η2=.14. Regarding Climate-Smart management, the household survey showed that the wetlands owned by 92.0% of the participants were affected by WH invasion. Additionally, 69.3% of the participants confirmed that the water quality of the lake water had been deteriorated and 74.1% of deforestation and loss of native grasses due to WH invasion in the districts. The results of this study revealed the signals of land use and land cover change due to water hyacinth invasion in the Upper Awash Basin, which is considered an important aspect of future water resources planning and management. Additionally, WH and environmental chemical interaction suggest that the water hyacinth plant is a promising nature-based solution for removing undesirable chemicals from contaminated water bodies. Further, the early detection and control of WH spread in the locality needs to be based on citizen science so that the community members can act in time to control the spread of WH by themselves. The study recommends that wetland restoration, water quality reestablishment, afforestation, and rehabilitation of native vegetation be done as part of climate-smart management for WH control and better management. Therefore, effective management and control of WH requires coordination of controlling effort, proper participation of the local people, and involvement of different experts. In addition, this study recommends exploring the benefits of plants to nature and humans, including biomass production and ecosystem servicesD. Phil (Environmental Science)Environmental Science
Adolescent-parent partnership guidelines for improving communication on sexual and reproductive health in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Background: Globally, adolescents face health risks, especially with respect to sexuality and reproduction. Each year, 7.4 million girls have unintended pregnancies that resulted to 3 million unsafe abortions. There is a paucity of evidence on the level of adolescent-parent communication on sexual and reproductive health issues and guiding framework for the essential sexual and reproductive health programs in Ethiopia.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to assess adolescent-parent partnership and develop guidelines for improving communication on sexual and reproductive health in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Methods: A cross-sectional study design was conducted among in-school adolescents paired with their parents. A total of 660 in-school adolescents and their parents and or guardians participated in the study.
A multi-stage sampling technique was applied to select the study participants. Data from in-school adolescents was collected using a facilitator guided self-administered questionnaire and face-to-face interviews with parents using structured quantitative survey questionnaire. Descriptive, binary and multiple logistic regressions were carried out to compute the proportions, and odds ratio at 95% confidence interval, respectively.
Results: More than one-fourth (28.3%) of in-school adolescents have ever had sexual intercourse. Nearly half (45%) of them had sex with multiple sexual partners and 54.4% did not use condoms. From sexually active in-school adolescent girls, one-in-ten (10.4%) of them had experienced an unwanted pregnancy. Of these, 70% had terminated their pregnancy. The comprehensive level of discussion regarding common sexual and reproductive health issues was found to be very low, 5.7%. In-school adolescents cited feeling ashamed, embarrassed, lack of knowledge, and cultural unacceptability as major barriers to discussing sexual and reproductive health issues with their parents.
School grade level of in-school adolescents’, religion and knowledge were significantly associated with adolescent-parents’ communication about their sexual and reproductive health issues. Adolescents’ sex, age, religion, lived with and fathers’ occupation were significantly associated with in-school adolescents’ knowledge and in-school adolescents’ sex, age and knowledge about sexual and reproductive health were significantly associated with in-school adolescents’ behaviour. Parent’s age and educational status were significantly associated with parental communication and parents’ sex, age and educational status were also significantly associated with parents’ knowledge about their adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health.
Conclusion: This study showed that in-school adolescents had early sexual initiation, experienced risky sexual behaviours that jeopardized with poor comprehensive sexual and reproductive health communication between in-school adolescents and their parents. Therefore, designing effective parent-adolescent communication intervention is critical in improving knowledge and communication of both parents and adolescents about common sexual and reproductive health issues. Adolescents’ engagement and participation in different clubs, awareness raising sessions and other platforms plays a pivotal role to prevent and avoid those risky adolescent sexual behaviours.Ph. D. An exploration of the value of operational crime intelligence to investigate rhino poaching in the Eastern Cape
Abstracts and keywords in English, Xhosa and AfrikaansThis study explored the value of operational crime intelligence in investigating rhino poaching in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with various law enforcement units, including Crime Intelligence, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI – aka the Hawks), Stock Theft and Endangered Species units, Environmental Affairs and a selection of experts in the field of combatting rhino poaching.
Results of the study reveal difficulties faced by the participants in their efforts to counter rhino poaching in the Eastern Cape. It is recommended that the threat posed by rhino poaching in the Eastern Cape be reviewed. Based on the data analysis, operational crime intelligence as a strategy is only marginally used to address rhino poaching. The Crime Intelligence units in the Eastern Cape are not mandated to collect intelligence on rhino poaching as part of the overall provincial strategy. This decision may have been well-suited a decade ago, but it needs to be revised if authorities are serious about dealing with this type of crime in the Eastern Cape.
It is suggested that multidisciplinary, inter-agency task teams be formed to alleviate resource constraints and facilitate resource and intelligence sharing. Also, when traditional crime-reduction strategies fail, police commanders must look for alternative approaches. Operational crime intelligence as a strategy is recommended as an alternative approachOlu phandolwazi beluphonononga ixabiso lobuntlola obusebenza kulwaphulomthetho kuphando lokubulawa kwemikhombe ngokungekho semthethweni kwiphondo leMpuma Koloni eMzantsi Afrika. Indien tradisionele misdaadverminderstrategieë misluk, moet polisiebevelvoerders alternatiewe benaderings vind – in hierdie geval kan operasionele misdaadintelligensie ’n lonende strategie wees.M.A. (Forensic Investigation)Police Practic
Impact of corporate culture on performance of multinational corporations in Zambia
In response to the increased entry of Multinational Companies to the Zambian market, this study explored the impact of corporate culture (particularly language, religion and cultural values) on the performance of selected MNCs in Zambia. Some previous studies have largely focused on the relationship between international cultural diversification and corporate social performance in multinational enterprises. Further studies have explored how various cultural dimensions such as market culture, bureaucratic culture, and consensual culture affect the operational performance of multinational corporations. Other research has examined the influence of organisational culture on business performance and taken into consideration both financial and non-financial dimensions, finding out that companies with consistent cultural practices and values experienced improved non-financial performance. This study was anchored on the Hofstede cultural dimension model to explain corporate cultural management and performance of the MNCs. The Hofstede cultural dimension theory was the preferred theory because it addresses the behaviours and interactions between cultures within an organisation. Therefore, three cultural variables were identified to help in conducting this research on the impact of corporate culture on performance of Multinational Corporations in Zambia. These include Religion, Language and Cultural practice. The study considered the influence of language as a cultural variable in the workplace. On the other hand, Zambia’s religious landscape reflects diversity and coexistence with each religion being unique in its practices and beliefs. Above all, Cultural practices shape how individuals communicate, interact, and cooperate within the community. Therefore, this variable was considered because of its significance on how individual cultural values shape the environment in the workplace. The study employed quantitative research method in data collection and analysis as well as drawing inferences. An online survey method was employed to collect data from 175 CEOs or their proxies between June and July 2024. The data was analysed using a combination of statistical approaches in the form of nonparametric estimates, as underpinned by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics 30) to derive the statistical outputs and to draw inferences. The findings of the study included a recognition and acknowledgment of the different cultural values that existed among the employees and that there also existed in the selected MNCs various dimensions of cultural diversity which include language, religion and other cultural values. There was evidence that some MNCs made efforts to accommodate cultural diversity in the three areas that were identified. It was found that the three areas had significant impacts on the productivity of the MNCs. As a result, the MNCs employed strategies to manage cultural diversity within the organisation which influences their productivity (downward, stopped, or upward production time). It was concluded that corporate culture had an impact on the non-financial aspects of the organisation in Zambia. Therefore, the study recommends that management of cultural diversity within MNCs in Zambia was essential to boost performance and as such, organisations should take deliberate initiatives to embrace and manage cultural diversity.PhD. Exploring the factors affecting the teaching and learning of English reading skills of Grade 3 learners in Tembisa, South Africa
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and VendaThis study aimed to explore the factors affecting the teaching and learning of English reading skills in Grade 3. In South Africa, learners progress from Grade 3 to Grade 4 without mastering basic reading skills, even though it is crucial for their future reading achievement and academic success. The recently published 2021 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) found that 81% of Grade 3 learners in South Africa who have progressed to Grade 4 cannot read for meaning. This is up from 78% in 2016, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As learners enter the intermediate phase (Grades 4 to 6) of primary school, the instructional focus shifts from learning to read to reading to learn. However, many learners entering this phase are not geared up and struggle to read. To highlight this phenomenon, this study employed a qualitative research approach that used a case study design within an interpretative paradigm to explore the factors affecting the teaching and learning of English reading skills in Grade 3. The study was conducted in three government primary schools in Tembisa, South Africa. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The study population comprised 21 purposively selected participants: three principals, six teachers, and 12 learners who were individually interviewed telephonically, and via Zoom to accommodate the challenges and regulations arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. The socio-cultural theory underpinned this study emphasising the importance of the teacher as the skilful more knowledgeable other (MKO) in scaffolding learners’ reading development. Furthermore, the learner's background and cultural learning and experiences must be taken into consideration during the learning process. Thematic analysis identified numerous factors affecting the teaching and learning of English reading skills in Grade 3. Key factors included inadequate initial training of teachers in teaching English reading skills, an inflexible curriculum, language barriers, lack of instructional strategies, learner motivation, culture of reading, and teaching and learning resources. The implications of the study aim to inform, policymakers, curriculum designers, and other relevant stakeholders about factors influencing the development of English reading skills among learners. The study recommends that the Department of Basic Education (DBE), and all stakeholders collaborate to address the factors highlighted and reassess the reading and language policies in Grade 3 primary schools to enable effective teaching and learning of English Reading Skills, thus supporting young learners in their educational journeys. Ngudo iyi yo vha yo sedza kha u sedzulusa zwithu zwine zwa kwama u funza na u guda zwikili zwa u vhala zwa English kha Gireidi ya 3. A book review of Bunmi Omodan’s Research Paradigms and their Methodological Alignment in Social Sciences
In my review of Bunmi Omodan's book on Research Paradigms and their Methodological Alignment in Social Sciences(2024, Routledge), I explain in depth how Omodan endeavors to navigate the difficult course between trying to give credence to all the paradigms which he discusses, while urging us to continue to reflect upon the consequences of how we invoke them. He also subtly introduces as a general ethical guideline that we should (as expressly advised within transformative and Indigenous paradigms), reflect upon how research can be designed to “provide a space for inclusive decision making and co-learning, cultivating an environment where [professional] researchers’ and community members’ insights and wisdom are valued” (Omodan, 2024, p. 128).In the book, Research Paradigms and Their Methodological Alignment in Social Sciences, Bunmi Omodan explores in depth the philosophical foundations of five paradigms (which he points out are not fixed or univocal in their content), namely positivism; interpretivism/constructivism; transformative paradigm; postcolonial Indigenous paradigm; and pragmatism. Examples of the kinds of research questions, research designs, and attendant data collection and analytic processes, as well as ethical positions, that align with paradigmatic positions are presented to us. At the same time, we are urged to “engage with critiques and debates surrounding each paradigm” (Omodan, 2024, p. xii). The book thus hopes to shed light on, while contributing to, “ongoing intellectual dialogues within the field [of social research]” (Omodan, 2024, p. xii). The book re-opens discussion on topics such as: the meaning of “objectivity”; the role of the “subjectivity” of researchers in engagement with research participants, as admitted within certain paradigms; the need to critically reflect on the consequences for research participants and the wider society(ies) of the research endeavor (which he urges us all to take seriously); the possible commitment to social justice as part of a research agenda (as advocated specifically within the transformative paradigm); and the importance of appreciating the historical context in which all paradigms have arisen (and evolved), including the postcolonial Indigenous one. As he puts it, this latter paradigm “acknowledges that colonialism is not a thing of the past but continues to shape Indigenous realities [of those historically and currently affected] in various forms” (p. 119)
Illuminative evaluation of the Minnaar EQ dynamics self-awareness programme for emotional intellingence enhancement
Text in EnglishText in English with abstracts in Zulu and Afrikaansresearch focuses on training in emotional intelligence to enhance individuals' personal and social effectiveness in today's challenging work environment. Investing in emotional intelligence training cultivates a more positive and efficient workplace culture, resulting in higher employee satisfaction, better retention rates and sustained organisational success. While studies have shown immediate positive effects following emotional intelligence training, more research is needed on how well these skills transfer to real-world settings. The main aim of the research was to conduct an illuminative qualitative evaluation of the Minnaar EQ Dynamics Self-Awareness Programme's influence on individuals' emotional intelligence skills and to assess the perceived spill-over effects of the newly acquired skills to the social work environment.
The exploratory-descriptive, qualitative interpretivist study involved a retrospective case study of nine employees' experiences with the Minnaar EQ Dynamics Self-Awareness Programme in a South African organisation. The researcher was interested in exploring the phenomenon (perceptions of experiences of the Minnaar EQ Dynamics Self-Awareness Programme) from the perspective of those who experienced (participated in) the programme to illuminate the meaning they ascribed to that phenomenon (the programme). Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews. The application of thematic analysis to analyse the data with Atlasti software programme, revealed two overarching themes: emotional intelligence as transformative learning, and self-exploration and personal mastery, each with their respective themes and sub-themes. These overarching themes provided preliminary working propositions for evaluating the impact of the Minnaar EQ Dynamics Self-Awareness Programme. The findings highlighted several positive outcomes and spill-over effects of the training programme, including features and processes of the programme that facilitated changes in participants' self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social skills.
The study contributes to the research on emotional intelligence theory and evidence-based training programmes, offering insights for the design, implementation and evaluation of such training.Lolu cwaningo lugxile ekuqeqeshweni ngobuhlakani bomuntu ukuze kuthuthukiswe ukusebenza kahle komuntu siqu nokusebenzisana okuhle endaweni yokusebenzela enezinselelo.
Ph. D. Black Pentecostal reflections on the inward-looking approach in classical Pentecostalism
This article problematises the inward-looking approach adopted by classical Pentecostalism in a South African context. A literature review on White-led classical Pentecostal churches reveals that in their early development, these churches were inward-looking and only concentrated on their theology of Spirit baptism, evangelism, and eschatological expectations. This inward-looking
approach made classical Pentecostalism passive in response to
socio-economic and socio-political issues. Issues such as racial
segregation and economic challenges are highlighted here to
demonstrate classical Pentecostalism’s non-engagement. The aim
of this article is the rationale the benefits for classical Pentecostal
churches in broadening their ways of engaging with South
African society. This can be done by learning from African
Independent Pentecostal Churches whose theology on socioeconomic
and socio-political issues is exceedingly outwardlooking.
These lessons have implications for Blackness as they
demonstrate that Black leaders can change their circumstances
without the supervision of Whiteness.Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiolog
