Strategic leadership: overcoming gender marginalisation of female principals in rural South African secondary schools
Text in EnglishDespite global progress towards gender equality and female empowerment, significant disparities persist, particularly in rural education systems. Female principals in South Africa's rural secondary schools remain marginalised owing to entrenched gender biases and socio-cultural barriers. These challenges are compounded by traditional and cultural norms, inadequate infrastructure, resource shortages, vandalism, and socio-economic constraints. In contexts dominated by male subordinates, resistance to female leadership often stems from deeply ingrained cultural, religious, and traditional beliefs, overshadowing the influence of legal frameworks.
This study employs the intergenerational theory as its theoretical framework, which provides insights into the transmission of power, knowledge, and resources across generations within rural communities. Using a qualitative research approach, the researcher applied purposive sampling to select six principals, six deputy principals, four departmental officials, and two School Governing Body members from rural schools. Face-to-face interviews using semi-structured questions were used as the data collection tool, with thematic analysis used to identify key patterns and themes.
The findings reveal that female principals in rural South African schools face distinct challenges, often requiring significantly more effort to achieve outcomes comparable to those of their male counterparts. These obstacles highlight the pressing need for targeted leadership development. Consequently, the study recommends implementing a seven-year leadership development programme for novice female teachers. This initiative seeks to cultivate leadership skills early, address systemic barriers, and establish a supportive community of practice for aspiring female leaders.D. Phil. Job demands, job resources and work engagement in a human resources organisation after the COVID-19 pandemic
This study adapted the Job Demands-Resources Scale (JDRS) for the Human Resources (HR) sector in a post-COVID-19 era and assessed whether the adapted JDRS can predict work engagement in this context using an exploratory sequential mixed-method approach. Initially, the JDRS was adapted through a literature review and qualitative feedback from HR managers (n = 18). The adapted scale was then tested with HR employees (n = 200) together with the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). The scale was found to be reliable and valid, consisting of three job demands and four job resources specific to the HR sector.
The findings showed that job resources significantly predict work engagement, explaining 62% of the variance in Vigour and 57% of the variance in Dedication and Absorption respectively. These insights may be adapted to demonstrate the significance of the study in establishing a scale unique to the HR sector.M. Com. “Exploring experiences of healthcare workers providing psychosocial support to homosexual men living with HIV in Polokwane”
Text in EnglishThis qualitative study investigated healthcare workers' experiences providing psychosocial support to homosexual men living with HIV at a selected health institute in Polokwane. The study aimed to explore healthcare workers' attitudes, knowledge, and practices in addressing the unique needs of this population.
Eight healthcare workers were purposively selected and participated in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed that participants demonstrated positive attitudes and adequate knowledge about homosexual men living with HIV, without imposing personal attitudes or biases. However, some participants acknowledged the need for additional training and resources.
Findings highlighted the importance of healthcare workers' cultural competence and empathy in providing effective psychosocial support. Community outreach and awareness campaigns were recommended to address prevailing misconceptions and stigma. It further highlighted the notion that there is positive and negative knowledge that the healthcare workers have experienced as they provide needed support. Culture plays a crucial role in homosexuality.
The study's limitations include the small sample size and restricted geographical scope. Covid-19 which was a pandemic at the time of research played a crucial role in limiting the number of participants the study ended reaching. Future research should explore larger, diverse samples, including rural healthcare workers, religious leaders, and community members.
Conclusion: This study underscores the significance of healthcare workers' positive attitudes and knowledge in providing psychosocial support to homosexual men living with HIV. The findings inform strategies to enhance healthcare workers' capacity and promote inclusive care.Department of Sociolog
Supervised classification of variable stars using time series light-curve data
This research study investigates the current state-of-the-art variable star classification. We analyse current supervised classification methods for application to the problem of classifying variable star data obtained from a radio telescope. Since variable stars are a time series problem, we investigated various models to compare them with classification methods in the literature. We implemented these models and derived metrics that are directly comparable to the current literature results using a quantitative methodology. This research problem has not yet been investigated; consequently, we applied deep learning image classification to the problem. Thereafter, we compared published work with the performance of all the models and literature and inferred which models performed the best.M. Sc. (Computing)School of Computin
An analysis of residential robberies at Ivory Park Police Station in Gauteng, South Africa
This research, examined the performance of the Ivory Park Police Station in the in-vestigation of residential robbery crimes in Midrand area of South Africa. Although the figures on residential robbery were said to decline during the year 2019/2020, there raised noticeable concerns on the level of detection rate. The purpose of the study was therefore to understand the factors which led to this situation regarding the poor identification rate and seek how improvements can be made.
The research used qualitative descriptive strategies particularly, a case study strategy of a collective case study. The data was collected using interactive and self-observa-tion methods on police officers and Community Policing Forum members. There was identification of some of the barriers which constrained the effectiveness of investiga-tive officers including the barriers of poverty or limited resources, absence of foren-sic/laboratory, training and negative attitude from the public. Factors such as unem-ployment, and drug abuse were however found to be associated with the increased rate of incidence of residential robbers hence making detection and solving of the crime very difficult. In the study, it was pointed out that it is important to enhance detective work by in-creasing the available resources, increasing the efficiency of operations, applying more community-oriented policing, and integrating new forensic science techniques. Confronting these challenges might help in conducting investigations of crime more efficiently, regaining confidence of the people, as well as increasing public safety in the area of Ivory Park. The conclusion offers law enforcement and government au-thorities pertinent information that will assist them in enhancing crime control strate-gies in other places with similar circumstances.M.A. (Forensic Science and Technology)Police Practic
A chitosan based ReRAM for green computing
The utilization of information technology (IT) has witnessed a significant surge in recent years, as businesses heavily depends on IT systems for a multitude of operations, including communication, data storage, and customer management. This trend is likely to persist as technology advances and becomes increasingly integrated into everyday business operations. Furthermore, there exists a clear inverse correlation between the quantity of emerging information technology and its longevity. It is obvious that newer, more sophisticated systems are replacing older ones quickly on a daily basis. This, in turn, contributes to the rapid increase in electronic waste, which is considered a significant environmental hazard because of the toxic materials present in electronic devices. It is important to recognize that memory devices play a crucial role in information technology. There is a clear demand for memory devices to progress in terms of their sophistication and efficiency. Memory devices are essential for storing programs or applications required to carry out various tasks. With the constant advancement of technology, the need for powerful memory devices is only set to increase. Flash memory, dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), and static random-access memory (SRAM) face significant challenges in terms of speed, capacity, and energy efficiency. Researchers are continuously striving to create innovative technologies that can overcome these challenges and enhance the performance of memory devices. Examples of such technologies include resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) and phase-change memory (PCM). These advancements have the potential to revolutionize electronic devices and contribute to a more sustainable future by increasing product longevity and reducing electronic waste. In this study, a ReRAM device with a sandwich-type configuration was fabricated and analyzed for its memory capability. The device consists of an active layer sandwiched between a bottom electrode and a top electrode. This device has a notation: Ag/CS+PVP+CdTe/CdSe/ITO. The active layer, also known as the resistive switching layer, was made up of chitosan (CS) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which were both biodegradable materials. These were mixed with CdTe/CdSe core-shell quantum dots. Contrastingly, the top electrode consisted of silver (Ag), while the bottom electrode was comprised of an indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) layer. This memory device was developed on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. When voltage was applied between the Ag and ITO electrodes, current in the Ag/CS+PVP+CdTe/CdSE/ITO device was measured, and some fascinating discoveries were made. The device demonstrated memory hysteresis, with a satisfactory ION/IOFF ratio of ≥ 10 and a low working voltage of ≥ 0.2 V. Based on these observations, it appears that the device operates as a memory device while consuming very little power. In addition, it was suggested that the addition of CdTe/CdSe to the composite material could increase the Schottky barrier height at the interface between the electrodes and the active layer, thereby preventing electrons from entering the active layer. Conductive filaments were consequently formed because of the diffusion of Ag+ ions into the active layer. Considering the study's results, it appears that incorporating CdTe/CdSe QDs could enhance the memory and switching capabilities of the CS/PVP blend-based resistive switching memory.M. Sc. Resource utilisation of chacma baboon (papio ursinus) in Suikerbosrand nature reserve (sbrnr) – implications for management
Abstract in English, Zulu and Northern SothoThis study investigated resource utilisation patterns of chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) in Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve (SBRNR) to inform effective management strategies. With human encroachment and habitat loss, the interactions between baboons and humans have escalated in recent years, impacting local agricultural activities and tourist experiences due to crop raiding and waste scavenging. This research was conducted using GPS-collared baboon within a troop to track spatial movement and resource use across seasons, revealing how seasonal variations influence baboon foraging strategies, home range and habitat preferences. Key focus areas included determining high-use zones within baboons’ home ranges, analysing dietary intake and seasonal activity patterns, and examining plant species dispersed by baboons through seed dispersal. Findings suggest a significant seasonal shift in habitat utilization with extended ranges during the resourcescarce dry season and reduced ranges when resources are abundant in the wet season. Furthermore, baboons’ diet consisted of various plant species, indicating their adaptability and critical role in seed dispersal, potentially contributing to vegetation regeneration within the reserve. Management implications highlight the importance of understanding baboon foraging patterns and seasonal shifts in order to mitigate human-wildlife conflict while conserving ecological functions. The study supports ongoing monitoring and tailored management strategies to sustain ecological balance and reduce baboon-related issues in and around SBRNR.Dinyakišišo tše di nyakišišitše mekgwa ya tšhomišo ya methopo ka ditšhwene tša chacma (Papio ursinus) ka Lefelong la Bolotatlhago la Suikerbosrand (SBRNR) go phethagatša mekgwa ya taolo ye e šomago gabotse. The investigation of corporate entrepreneurial challenges of unit sales leaders and insurance sales agents
Text and abstract in EnglishThis study aimed to investigate corporate entrepreneurship challenges of unit sales
leaders and insurance sales agents an agency operation. Insurance companies
operate in highly competitive environments and over decades, they have had to
become innovative in their service offerings. Corporate entrepreneurship refers to the
process where individuals or teams within an existing organisation, develop or enhance
products and services, in an effort to improve performance and competitiveness in the
business. Corporate entrepreneurship has allowed many insurance companies to
become agile and innovative. However, much of the existing research on challenges
encountered in corporate entrepreneurship focused on the company’s perspective.
This study addressed the need for an investigation into the challenges encountered by
USLs and FAs.
This is an exploratory in that it investigated the challenges of insurance agents in a
corporate entrepreneurship environment. Due to considerations of proximity, cost and
accessibility, the total sample was selected from the company located in the Gauteng
Province. The chosen sample for this study, comprised of five FAs, as well as four USLs
from the IWCP agency operation. In order to do this, a qualitative approach was
followed. To generate the qualitative data, a case study approach was followed. This
approach was deemed the best fit to allow for the achievement of the study’s
objectives by identifying, in-depth the various aspects leading to challenges
experienced and how to overcome them.
The study’s findings showed that the company’s insurance sales agents (FAs) and unit
sales leaders (USLs) believed that the selected company encouraged creativity and
innovation, and that it had well-designed structures, systems, a media presence and
a good reputation. Its move to remote work and the entrepreneurial approach to FAs
working in a manner that was similar to those of franchisees was obviously a positive
one for the company. This positive outcome was based on the fact that it standardised
all records, created a continuous update to the central database, referrals and leads
to the other parts of the group, and thus allowed the company to remain profitable.
Remote work also reduced the need for a growing bricks and mortar infrastructure.
However, it also meant that FAs were not experiencing the expected income security,
which could lead to potentially great FA leaving the company during the initial job term.
For future research purposes, studies must be conducted on the challenges faced by
sales agents and unit sales leaders in other related insurance sales channels.
A detailed study must be conducted on the knowledge and perceptions of current and
potential insurance product clients and specifically, how these perceptions influence
purchasing behaviour This should be conducted among the different market
segments/population groups.M Com (Business Management)Business Managemen
Ubudlelwane phakathi kwengqiqo yokuziqonda esekelwe emsebenzini nolwaneliseko ngomsebenzi kwiqumrhu lohambo ngeenqwelomoya
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and XhosaThe aim of this cross-sectional survey was to explore the relationship between work-related sense of coherence (Work-SoC) and job satisfaction (JS) in an aviation organisation. It also examined differences in Work-SoC and JS among various demographic groups. The study involved 136 client services employees working in the airport environment selected through convenience sampling. Data was collected using Work-SoC scale, the Abridged Job Descriptive Index (AJDI) and a biographical questionnaire. The study found no overall relationship between Work-SoC and JS, although some of the subscales showed positive and statistically significant relationships within each construct. The regression model did not support Work-SoC as a predictor of JS, indicating that Work-SoC has no substantial impact on JS in the aviation organisation. While there were differences in mean scores among the different groups, significant differences were only found in JS across various job levels. Injongo yolu phando lubandakanya amacandelo amaninzi ngaxeshanye yayikukuphononga ubudlelwane phakathi kwengqiqo yokuziqonda esekelwe emsebenzini nokwaneliseka ngumsebenzi wequmrhu lohambo ngeenqwelomoya.
