A feminist investigation of the The Sunday Independent's representation of women's quest for political power in the ANC towards its elective conference in 2017
This study sought to investigate The Sunday Independent’s representation of women contestants with their male counterparts in the struggle for leadership towards the 2017 elective conference of the African National Congress. The study examined 32 newspaper pieces, including 22 opinion pieces, 2 hard news stories, and 8 editorials, focusing on the portrayal of both male and female candidates while considering the perspectives of the writers, journalistic styles, and placements. All the articles were electronically downloaded during the course of the study in 2022. The study poses the question- “How did the media represent women’s quest for political power within the ANC?” It also seeks to establish the major discourses emanating from the newspaper coverage of the gendered contestation for political power in the ANC. The study used feminism as its theoretical framework. The study used the case study as its research design and the qualitative research methodology as its research methodology. The findings reveal two dominant narratives concerning female candidates: one characterised by negative representation stemming from structural and cultural biases, and another that promotes positive feminist discourses, reframing women's roles in politics. Notably, the coverage highlights the virtues of female candidates, such as Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, in contrast to male candidates like Cyril Ramaphosa, who is often associated with corruption and scandals. Overall, the results indicate a gradual shift toward gender-balanced coverage, reflecting progress in equitable representation, though remnants of patriarchal bias remain. The study concludes that while negative stereotypes about female candidates are diminishing, they have not been entirely eradicated.M.A. (Communication)Communication Scienc

Ecosystemic mapping of the fit of ODL first level students in Accounting Sciences and the institution
Abstracts in English, Zulu and AfrikaansThere are many factors contributing to student success in South African Open Distance Learning (ODL) in first level Accounting Sciences, both in terms of module success and degree completion. This case study utilised a sequential explanatory mixed methods design to understand the notion of students’ fit in higher education, first level Accounting Sciences (FAC1502), and Unisa. The study entailed an analysis using descriptive statistics of responses to a self-designed survey sent to all FAC1502 registered students in 2021, followed by a thematic analysis of interviews with purposively selected students, lecturers, and tutors. The findings highlight that fit occurs throughout the different layers of a student’s bioecological systems, where interactions mainly occur on an individual and microsystem-level between student and institution, with mesosystem interactions lacking. Using Subotzky and Prinsloo’s socio-critical model and Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model provides evidence of differences between students and intuitional perceptions of fit in higher education, ODL and FAC1502.Ziningi izinto ezinomthelela empumelelweni yabafundi abafunda eSikhungweni Sokufunda Nanoma Ukuphi eNingizimu Afrika (ODL) ezingeni lokuqala lezeSayensi Yokuhlelwa Kwamabhuku Ezimali, mayelana nokuphumelela isifundo kanye nokuphothula iziqu. Search for a resonance decaying into a scalar particle and a Higgs boson in the final state with two bottom quarks and two photons in proton–proton collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Abstract A search for the resonant production of a heavy scalar X decaying into a Higgs boson and a new lighter scalar S, through the process X → S(→ b b ¯ )H(→γγ), where the two photons are consistent with the Higgs boson decay, is performed. The search is conducted using an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search is performed over the mass range 170 ≤ mX ≤ 1000 GeV and 15 ≤ mS ≤ 500 GeV. Parameterised neural networks are used to enhance the signal purity and to achieve continuous sensitivity in a domain of the (mX, mS) plane. No significant excess above the expected background is found and 95% CL upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio, ranging from 39 fb to 0.09 fb. The largest deviation from the background-only expectation occurs for (mX, mS) = (575, 200) GeV with a local (global) significance of 3.5 (2.0) standard deviations
Novel Kuhn-Tucker conditions for vibration analysis in a functionally graded porous beam using the R-program
Functionally graded materials provide a flexible and individualized strategy for material design, allowing for optimization of properties and performance for particular purposes. The investigation considers the effects of simply supported (SS), clamped-clamped (CC) and clamped-free (CF) configurations. The study examines the vibration characteristics of bi-directional functionally graded porous beams (BDFGPB) using the third-order
shear deformation theory, considering both even and uneven porosity conditions. The Hamilton method is used to derive equilibrium equations for beams, which are then solved using the Kuhn-Tucker technique and Rprogram. The BDFGPB’s validity was verified by comparing it with open literature, revealing deviations of 3.19%, 1.25%, and 2.15% in non-dimensional natural frequency for SS, CC and CF boundary conditions. Furthermore, as the porosity index increases, the dimensionless natural frequency decreases, reducing beam stiffness and rigidity. This study demonstrates that porosity plays a critical role in the design of modern structures, as its ratio greatly impacts their performance and responsiveness
From altar to action: Customising the pneumatological imagination to sustainable development
Pentecostal ecotheology has been explored as the theology that can go beyond the
anthropocentric focus of salvation towards the salvation of the non-human. This aspect of
Pentecostal ecotheology has been explored by previous studies; however, the research gap exists in applying the same to sustainable development goals (SDGs). This article uses the pneumatological imagination as a theoretical framework to apply Pentecostal ecotheology to SDGs. The article argues that a pneumatological imagination is relevant in addressing the SDGs on hunger and agriculture (SDG2), water resources (SDG6), energy (SDG7), climate change (SDG13), conservation and sustainable management of marine resources (SDG14) and sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems (SDG15). The research findings are as follows: the pneumatological imagination can broaden the eschatological message to encompass social justice, political change and ecological repentance, beyond conventional evangelism. The pneumatological imagination envisions practical ways to engage in and contribute to the triune God’s redemptive renewal of the world. The pneumatological imagination elevates individuals whose voices have been historically and traditionally marginalised because of gender, power dynamics or socioeconomic class. The pneumatological imagination aspires to provide a universal panorama and an inclusive capacity that envisions the salvation of everyone. The article is a literature review and data were analysed using the different themes of the United Nations’ SDGs.Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiolog
A search for top-squark pair production, in final states containing a top quark, a charm quark and missing transverse momentum, using the 139 fb−1 of pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector
Abstract
This paper presents a search for top-squark pair production in final states with a top quark, a charm quark and missing transverse momentum. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector during LHC Run 2 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of
s
= 13 TeV. The analysis is motivated by an extended Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model featuring a non-minimal flavour violation in the second- and third-generation squark sector. The top squark in this model has two possible decay modes, either

Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and TswanaWomen’s voices have been historically silenced in narratives of historical and collective trauma in South Africa. Women’s voices have been even more silent on how the historical and systematic oppression in South Africa interacted with domestic experiences within Black African households during and post-apartheid. The literature suggests that earlier childhood experiences inform transitions to other life developmental stages, such as motherhood. Research from South Africa shows high rates of individual exposure to childhood adversity in African girls and boys, which affect their life outcomes. However, with regard to girls (girl children), minimal research has explored how Black African women’s experiences of childhood traumas shape their transition to motherhood. This qualitative study explored how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), and contextual factors shape motherhood. Contextual factors in pre- and post-apartheid South Africa were highlighted concerning how they shape mothering practices and affect maternal mental health. Using a collective case study design, semi-structured interviews and reflective documents, data were collected from eight Black African women ranging in age from 30 to 45 years. The women experienced varied forms of adversities (physical abuse, neglect, maltreatment, violence) in the home during their childhood. A combination of purposive and snowball sampling was used to select the participants. The thematic analysis unpacked complex perspectives on mothering in the context of previous childhood adversities as well as mental health protective and risk factors. Through the lenses of Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, the study provides a systems perspective of adverse childhood experiences and factors affecting motherhood in this context. Narratives of upbringing showed a nuanced interplay between stability and instability, particularly in the context of mobility and complex family structures. The findings presented the complexities of father involvement and disengagement in the context of childhood adversities among a sample of Black South African women born between 1980 and 1990. It further provided valuable insights for comprehending the broader societal landscape and the evolving roles of fathers within African families. Guardianship family structures and kinship care unveiled a spectrum of experiences, emphasising the significant role of extended family members in shaping childhoods. The mothers’ childhood experiences, as well as the perceptions of their own mothers, informed maternal identities and their ideologies of motherhood. The study recommends that childhood adversities should be considered during interventions addressing maternal mental health. Mantswe a basadi a ntse a kganetswe go bua mo nakong e e fetileng mo ditlhalosong tsa kutlobotlhoko e e itemogetsweng ke batho ba morafe o o rileng mo Aforika Borwa. ICT, income inequality and economic growth nexus in South Africa
This study examined the causal relationship between ICT, income inequality and economic growth in South Africa using data from 1990 to 2021. Three measures of ICT were used in the study, namely fixed telephone lines subscription, mobile cellular subscriptions and the proportion of people using the internet to the total population. Employing the autoregressive distributed lag approach, the study found a unidirectional causal flow from income inequality to ICT across all measures of ICT employed. Another unidirectional causal flow from economic growth to ICT was found in the short run when ICT was measured by fixed telephone lines and mobile cellular. When internet access was used as a measure of ICT, a bidirectional causality between internet access and economic growth in the short run and a unidirectional causal flow from internet access to economic growth was confirmed. Across all three measures of ICT, no causal relationship was confirmed between economic growth and income inequality. The study points to the importance of economic growth in increasing ICT access and the crucial role that internet access has on economic growth in South Africa. Policy implications are discussed.Economic
Evaluating Data Privacy Compliance of South African ECommerce Websites Against POPIA
N/ASouth African e-commerce websites must comply with the Protection of Personal
Information Act (POPIA) to process customer’s personal information. However, limited
research exists about data privacy implementation within these websites. This study
assesses the extent of data privacy integration in 50 SA e-commerce websites. The
assessment uses 57 evaluation criteria developed in the initial phases of the study, mapped
to POPIA and refined in this study. While some e-commerce websites meet the
requirements, significant improvements are required to safeguard users' personal
information. Key areas requiring attention include processing consent, strong password
management, and quality of data that was not ensured. Recommendations include clear
data collection practices, explicit purpose specification, consent acquisition for processing,
marketing preferences and sharing with third parties, data quality maintenance and
enhanced security measures for passwords. Many online privacy policies fail to cover all
POPIA privacy conditions and specific recommendations for content are included. These
findings highlight a critical need for stronger data privacy practices in South African ecommerce
to protect customer information. The refined evaluation criteria are a novel
contribution for use by organisations to assess or develop their websites to operationalise
POPIA requirements, supporting better self-assessment and integration of data privacy
measures.College of Engineering, Science and TechnologyN/
