TikTok and grade 8 learners’ learning of static electricity

    No full text
This study is about the influence of using TikTok as a teaching tool and using it to improve Grade 8 learners’ understanding of static electricity in a public school in Gauteng, South Africa. As digital media becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, particularly for Generation Z, this research examines whether incorporating TikTok into science lessons can positively impact learners’ academic performance. Grounded in the theoretical framework of Connectivism, the study views learning as a networked phenomenon shaped by digital and social connections. Within both positivist and interpretivist paradigms, the study combines a mixed-method approach. Quantitative data was collected through pre-and post-tests, while qualitative data were gathered from questionnaires and the Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) to evaluate classroom teaching practices to capture learners’ experiences. The sample consisted of 59 Grade 8 Natural Sciences learners, with two experimental groups exposed to TikTok videos and a control group receiving traditional instruction. Findings from the quantitative analysis revealed a moderate improvement in the experimental groups, suggesting that TikTok has the potential to enhance conceptual understanding. Qualitative feedback highlighted those learners found TikTok engaging and fun, contributing to a more positive learning experience. Overall, this research provides insights into how TikTok was used in a science lesson to complement traditional teaching methods and suggests further investigation to understand their educational impact fully.M. The purpose of this study was to investigate the difficulties associated with the curriculum and diploma requirements at Tshwane South College (TSC). To do this, the study looked into the factors that contribute to UNISA not accepting TSC credentials as well as the effect it has on students. In order to comprehend the policy's direction in relation to the academic literature on this subject and its articulation, a literature review was conducted. The study used a qualitative research methodology as the major objective of the study was to gather information from four (4) UNISA lectures and five (5) TSC lecturers in order to help frame more focused research questions, semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather primary data. Both institutions' records were examined. Moreover, quantitative techniques like questionnaires were employed to examine twenty seven students of TSC. In order to identify themes that serve as the foundation for a discussion of the objectives, data was analysed using a qualitative content analysis method. The investigation provided evidence of disparities in the two (2) institutions' civil engineering curriculam and qualification requirements. Further data revealed that TSC College is not utilizing graduate qualities and has not registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). The research makes recommendations in order to address the issue of TSC students being denied entry. The TSC curriculum and requirements should also be reviewed. The Department of Higher Education should also step in to provide articulation assistance and to update the TSC qualification so that they are in line with University of South Africa (UNISA) qualifications.M.A. (Adult Basic Education and Youth Development)College of Educatio

Development of strategies to prevent gestational diabetes mellitus among pregnant women in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

    No full text
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop strategies to prevent gestational diabetes mellitus, following the initial assessment of its prevalence and risk factors among pregnant women in Addis Ababa Design and settings: Two epidemiological observational studies involving crosssectional and case-control designs were used concurrently to achieve the purpose of the study. The settings of this research were the state-led public hospitals of Addis Ababa. Methods: All pregnant women within their respective hospitals were considered as subgroups and, as a result, the sampling strategy was the two-stage cluster random sampling technique. In the cross-sectional study, 854 pregnant women were included. In the case-control study, 110 new cases of GDM and 220 second trimester pregnant women without GDM were involved. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Data were managed with Epi-info version 7 and analysed using SPSS version 26 statistical software. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were employed. To control possible cofounders and identify risk factors for gestational diabetes mellitus, multivariate regression statistical models were utilised, and statistical significance was accepted at a probability value <0.05. Results: The overall prevalence of GDM among pregnant women in Addis Ababa (29.7 ± 4.83 years) was 14.1% (95% CI: 11.7%-16.7%). After adjustment for possible confounders, factors significantly associated with GDM were maternal age older than 35 years (p=0.029,), unemployment (p<0.001), urban residence (p=0.004), second trimester overweight/obesity (p=0.003), low physical activity (p= 0.011), antenatal depression (p=0.009) and antenatal anaemia (p< 0.001). The final regression model has also shown that a poor obstetric history on caesarean delivery (p<0.001), stillbirths (p=0.002) and foetal macrosomia (p<0.001) were significantly associated with GDM. Conclusions: The study showed a high prevalence of GDM. The study identified determinants of GDM which informed the development of contextual preventive strategies. The developed strategies were promoting women’s enrolment and providing a safe working environment; addressing the consequences of urbanisation; information/communication on lifestyle interventions; instilling mechanisms to avoid excessive weight gain during the preconception/conception periods; awareness on the risks of advanced age during pregnancy; promoting women’s psychosocial wellbeing; considering previous obstetric outcomes; and early screening/diagnosis of GDM are recommended at various levels.D. Evidence of pair production of longitudinally polarised vector bosons and study of CP properties in ZZ → 4ℓ events with the ATLAS detector at s s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    No full text
Abstract A study of the polarisation and CP properties in ZZ production is presented. The used data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The ZZ candidate events are reconstructed using two same-flavour opposite-charge electron or muon pairs. The production of two longitudinally polarised Z bosons is measured with a significance of 4.3 standard deviations, and its cross-section is measured in a fiducial phase space to be 2.45 ± 0.60 fb, consistent with the next-to-leading-order Standard Model prediction. The inclusive differential cross-section as a function of a CP-sensitive angular observable is also measured. The results are used to constrain anomalous CP-odd neutral triple gauge couplings

The book of Micah and the land question: an application of Delbert R. Hillers’ relative deprivation theory to the land question in Zimbabwe

    Get PDF
Text in EnglishThe project focused on appraising the centrality of the land issue in both the first and Second Chimurenga liberation wars in Zimbabwe. A general ideological claim associates land with both the first and Second Chimurenga liberation narratives. This study employed the use of Delbert R. Hillers’ social scientific model of relative deprivation as a theoretical framework and two concepts, namely, relative deprivation and Latifundialization to find meaning to the social political and-economic phenomena of land in the Book of Micah and the Zimbabwean context. Hillers is of the conviction that the peasants in eighth-century Judah lost land to the rich people, most likely the merchants of the time. This study hypothesised that the poor peasants must have lost their land to the ruling class and the military that supported the rulers, which must have been a major cause of deprivation and discontent. A similar situation occurred in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), when the white ruling minority used military forces to evict tD. Phil. (Religious Studies)Religious Studies and Arabi

Effects of Rhus lancea and Celtis africana on short-term intake rate, nutrient digestibility, blood metabolites and rumen bacteria in Nguni goats as a model for feeding captive wildlife herbivores in zoological gardens

    No full text
Text in English with summaries in Northern Sotho and ZuluThe study assessed Rhus lancea and Celtis africana as browse species for concentrate selectors in captivity, using indigenous Nguni male goats as a model. The first experiment involved ten indigenous Nguni male goats, each weighing 16 ± 1.7 kg (mean ± SD) in the wet season and 15 ± 1.6 kg (mean ± SD) in the dry season. To assess the short-term intake rate of the browse by the goats, a cafeteria method was employed. Rhus lancea (RL) and Celtis africana (CA) branches were offered separately and in combination in a 1:1 ratio. The goats’ preferences were R. lancea > RL:CA > C. africana in the wet and dry seasons. In the second experiment, apparent total tract digestibility was estimated using twenty mature male Nguni goats weighing 16 ± 1.7 kg (mean ± SD) in a 2 x 4 (season x diet) randomized factorial experiment. All goats received Eragrostis curvula hay as a basal diet and one of four supplementary forages, namely, i) R. lancea, ii) C. africana, iii) a combination of the two browse species in a ratio 1:1 (RL:CA), and iv) a control diet made up of Medicago sativa, butternut squash, apples, spinach, and concentrates. The relation between audit committee effectiveness and financial reporting quality in listed companies

    Get PDF
Corporate governance failures and poor financial reporting quality often follow when an audit committee is ineffective. This study investigated the relation between audit committee effectiveness (independent variables) and the absence of restatements as a proxy for financial reporting quality (dependent variable). Variables were analysed from public reports of 40 South African listed companies. In Phase 1, descriptive statistics revealed that 23 out of 51 audit committee effectiveness variables had sufficient variability. In Phase 2, categorical principal component analysis subsumed the 23 variables into six factor variables and their hypotheses. In Phase 3, binomial logistic regression testing identified one factor variable significantly reduced restatements. The subsumed variables are (1) the audit committee consists of four or more members, (2) the audit committee engages external auditors to provide assurance on summarised financial information, (3) the audit committee reviews the content of summarised information and (4) three or more audit committee meetings are held annually.College of Accounting Science
