Relationship dynamics between organisational justice and organisational commitment in a Zimbabwean public sector organisation
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and IsiZuluThe general aim of the study was to investigate the statistical nature of the interrelationships between the independent variable, namely organisational justice (distributive justice, procedural justice, interpersonal justice and informational justice) and the dependant variable, namely organisational commitment (affective commitment, continuance commitment and normative commitment). Previous studies on the relationship between organisational justice and organisational commitment are well documented. However, the correlation between these variables in a Zimbabwean public sector organisation is unknown. The study used a quantitative research approach and considered the research from a post-positivist research paradigm. A convenient sample of employees working in a public sector organisation in Zimbabwe (n=411) completed the questionnaire. Descriptive, correlational and inferential statistics revealed positive relationships between organisational justice and organisational commitment, with variations in the strength of these associations across different justice dimensions and types of organisational commitment (affective commitment, continuance commitment and normative commitment) in a Zimbabwean public sector organisation. However, distributive justice emerged as the strongest predictor of organisational commitment among the various types of organisational justice. Moreover, the results revealed insignificant differences in employees’ perceptions regarding the relationship between organisational justice and organisational commitment based on the gender and age of the participant. The relationships confirmed in the study between the two constructs
contributed to knowledge of organisational justice and organisational commitment within an African environment. From a practical viewpoint, the research findings confirm the importance of fostering perceptions of justice in the workplace, as it contributes to higher levels of commitment among employees.
Therefore, public sector management should consider the impact of justice on employees' commitment levels, as it influences organisational performance and profitability. Strategies to enhance commitment should be implemented consistently across all age groups and genders.
Inhloso ejwayelekile yocwaningo kwakuwukuphenya isimo sezibalo sobudlelwano phakathi kokuguquguqukayo okuzimele, okungukuthi ubulungiswa benhlangano (ubulungiswa bokusabalalisa, ubulungiswa benqubo, ubulungiswa phakathi kwabantu kanye nobulungiswa bolwazi), kanye nokuguquguqukayo okuncikile, okungukuzibophezela kwenhlangano (ukuzibophezela okusebenzayo ukuzibophezela okuqhubekayo nokuzibophezela okujwayelekile). Technology as extensions of man : the use of Marshall McLuhan’s tetrad of media effects in an analysis of the metaverse: a media ecological perspective
Text in English, abstract in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThis study explores the implications of Marshall McLuhan's perspectives on the Metaverse, focusing on virtual reality from a media-ecological standpoint and viewing technology as extensions of human capabilities. It delves into McLuhan's concepts of media ecology and the way in which technology changes humanity, thereby affecting the media environment. By applying McLuhan's "laws of media" and his "tetrad" model, the study analyses the Metaverse and demonstrates how it surpasses current technologies by offering a more authentic experience. The investigation posits that as technology evolves, it often supersedes and becomes the content of previous media forms, a process exemplified by the evolution towards virtual reality. The research aims to demonstrate how the Metaverse, as a culmination of technologies, fits into McLuhan’s framework, suggesting a cyclical process where new technologies extend human capabilities and subsequently transform the media environment. The central research theme is encapsulated as an exploration of the Metaverse through McLuhan's tetrad of media effects, considering a media ecological perspective. Umbhalo uhlolela imiphumela yemibono kaMarshall McLuhan ngeMetaverse, ikakhulukazi igxile kuqiniso olungokoqobo lwe-virtual reality kusukela ekubukweni kwemidiya-ecological nokubheka ubuchwepheshe njengokunwetshwa kwamakhono abantu. Evaluation of the implementation of the Sizanani Community Network HIV support group programme for people living with HIV in Mamelodi
Abstracts in English, Sepedi and VendaThis study is an evaluation of the implementation of the Sizanani Community Network (SCN) support group initiatives in supporting people who are living with the human immunodefiency virus (PLHIV) in Mamelodi, Pretoria. The research aimed to evaluate the nature and types of strategies that the SCN HIV support group employs to: (1) implement the programme; (2) discuss the resource allocation towards the implementation of the SCN HIV support group programme activities; (3) explore challenges in implementing the SCN HIV support group programme activities, as well as; (4) identify ways that can be used to influence the HIV support group programme implementation. A qualitative research approach was chosen, utilising in-depth interviews with 15 participants and conducting 3 focus-group discussions. To explore the experiences of members of the support group, a qualitative research approach was chosen for this study. In-depth interviews and focus-group discussions were conducted with participants. Research findings revealed that the nature and types of activities carried out by the SCN are adequate to support the needs of PLHIV. However, funding emerged as the primary challenge, alongside issues such as skills shortages and non-sustainable resource allocation. The study also revealed that HIV/AIDS support groups have immense capacity to improve the social, psychological, and economic circumstances of members. Recommendations include: (1) an increase in the capacity building of support groups to increase their benefits to members, as well as; (2) increased monitoring and evaluation of the SCN activities to inform resource allocation and future.Dinyakisiso tse ke tshekatsheko ya phethagatso ya maithomelo a sehlopha sa thekgo sa Sizanani Community Network (SCN) go thekga batho bao ba phelago ka kokwanatlhoko ya go fokotsa masole a mmele mo mothong (PLHIV) ka Mamelodi, Pretoria. Breakup dynamics of a neutron-halo system at sub-barrier incident energies
The understanding of the nuclear breakup dynamics at sub-barrier incident energies,
remains a hot subject in Nuclear Physics. In this dissertation, the breakup of the weaklybound
neutron-halo 11Be nucleus impinging on a lead target is investigated for sub-barrier
and around the Coulomb barrier incident energies. As theoretical framework, the continuum
discretized coupled channels (CDCC) formalism is used. The fundamental mathematical
description of this formalism leading to a discretized set of coupled di erential
equations is outlined and the analytical expressions of the resulting coupling matrix elements
as well as the breakup cross sections are derived.
The convergence of the angular-distributions breakup cross section is rst checked against
various numerical parameters that are used in the numerical solution of the coupled di erential
equations. The stability of the numerical calculations is further tested by comparing
the numerical results with the available experimental data.
Comparison of breakup cross section with the total fusion cross section, it is reported
that for incident energies below the Coulomb barrier, the breakup cross section is more
important than the total fusion cross section. This observation has also been reported
in the breakup of the proton-halo 8B on the same target nucleus, in a similar incident
energy range. It is found that this importance of the breakup cross section over its fusion
counterpart is due to a strong enhancement of the breakup cross section by the continuumcontinuum
couplings. These couplings are otherwise known to strongly suppress the
breakup cross section for incident energies above the Coulomb barrier.
In order to further probe the enhancement of the breakup cross section by the continuumcontinuum
couplings, the e ect of these couplings on its Coulomb and nuclear breakup
components is analysed. It is shown that at sub-barrier incident energies, the continuumcontinuum
couplings strongly enhance the Coulomb breakup cross section, whereas they
strongly suppress the nuclear breakup cross section. It followed that the enhancement
of the total breakup cross section by these couplings comes exclusively from its Coulomb
component. The argument is that the enhancement of the Coulomb breakup cross section
below the Coulomb barrier by the continuum-continuum couplings can be explained by the projectile breakup on its outgoing trajectory. A dominant breakup channel over
other reaction channels at deep sub-barrier energies could be comprehensive to breakup
of weakly-bound systems and may be justified by the projectile breakup on its outgoing
trajectory. A paper manuscript based on these results has been submitted for review in the journal of European Physical Letters.M.A. (Physics)Physic
Exploring employee perceptions of the psychological contract, employee motivation and retention in the South African motor industry
Abstract in English with Zulu and Afrikaans translationsThe historical roots of the employment relationship date back to early civilisations, marked by individuals seeking expertise in exchange for rewards. Unspoken expectations between parties often shape the dynamics of this relationship, influencing individual motivation and organisational retention strategies. This study delves into these three pivotal aspects: the psychological contract, employee motivation and retention. This research employs a qualitative methodology, and in-depth virtual interviews with eight employees from diverse regions, race groups, and genders within the South African motor industry. It aims to fill an existing knowledge gap in the South African context by exploring the perceptions of both managerial and non-managerial employees, focusing on the interconnectedness of the psychological contract, employee motivation, and retention in one study, which currently does not exist. Given the industry's size and the dearth of research on this topic, this study enhances understanding of the employment relationship, which can be critical knowledge for dealer principals and HR practitioners in order to improve HR practices. The study also demonstrates that employee motivation and retention are intricately linked to the psychological contract thus supporting the existing research in this area. Umsuka womlando wobudlelwano bokuqashwa usukela emuva ezimpucukweni zakuqala, lapho abantu babeshintshana ngobuchule ukuze bathole imiklomelo. Public testimony in the Pentecostal liturgy: a transformative experience approach
Pentecostal liturgy in Africa is quite distinct from other forms of liturgies (such as mainline
churches) within the Christian tradition. As opposed to the reserved liturgy in Western
missional churches, a Pentecostal liturgy is participatory and lively. One of the aspects of
the Pentecostal liturgy is the public testimonies that are offered during a Pentecostal service.
Literature review on public testimony shows that the same has been previously used for
advertising, marketisation, and commercialisation of religion in the Pentecostal movement.
However, an evaluation of public testimony as a transformative experience remains underresearched.
This article uses the literary analysis to bridge this research gap by analysing the
value of public testimony in the Pentecostal transformation experience. This will be achieved
by introducing the Pentecostal liturgy in the context of the Pentecostal movement. The
concept of public testimony in Pentecostal liturgy will be outlined to understand its
significance. The aim here is to demonstrate the fact that public testimony does not only
serve the purpose of marketing, advertising, or selling religion but is also a transformative
experience.Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiolog
Towards a corporate social responsibility communication framework : a responsible leadership perspective in FTSE4GOOD organisations
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and Gaelic-IrishThis study addresses the evolving landscape of Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) communication within organisations and its intricate connection to
responsible leadership. As stakeholder expectations undergo dynamic shifts,
responsible leaders recognise the imperative to adapt and enhance CSR
communication strategies. This research aims to scrutinise the need for a
nuanced comprehension of CSR communication through the lens of responsible
leadership. An integrative leadership framework (ILF) for CSR communication will
be crafted to encapsulate the distinctive attributes of responsible leadership. The
study, utilising a dual-phased survey research approach, encompasses a webbased
quantitative survey and qualitative one-on-one interviews. The findings
emphasise that leaders should create a supportive and inspiring workplace by
valuing active listening, collaboration, and empathy. Intrinsic value is crucial for
sustainable growth and eco-friendly practices. Meritocracy is important for
selecting capable individuals, and ethical behaviour by executives shapes
organisational culture. Aligning individual and organisational goals is beneficial,
and organisations must maintain credibility by aligning their actions with their
intentions. Targeting organisations on the FTSE4Good UK Index as of February

Efficacy evaluation of selected soil applied herbicides on Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) seedlings under thermoperiods simulating Mutale magisterial area
Abstracts in English, Venda, SepediOkra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) Moench is an essential vegetable globally, but in the past decade, a reduction in yield per hectare has been noted. Amongst various reasons for its low yield, weeds are the most important. These weeds reduce crop growth by competing for resources and by allelopathic effects. In this research, we investigated the influence of pendimethalin and alachlor on the plant height, leaf length, leaf width, stem diameter, number of leaves, root length and root diameter of okra plants.
The results reveal that pendimethalin was found to exert an influence on the plant height of okra; okra treated with pendimethalin grew faster than that treated with alachlor. With pendimethalin, a gradual increase was recorded in the leaf length, leaf width, stem diameter and number of leaves. A significant influence of alachlor was observed on the plant height, leaf width and stem diameter in okra plants as the measured parameters were high. In summary, the stem diameter of okra treated with pendimethalin at rate 5 and the leaf width were positively increased to 253% at week 4. It is concluded that the use of pendimethalin and alachlor soil-applied herbicides will enhance production and farmers’ livelihood in the Mutale district involving mainly okra plants.
In this research, we also investigated the influence of metolachlor and trifluralin on the agronomic parameters of okra plants. A criminological investigation of learner-on-educator violence in three basic education districts in the City of Tshwane, South Africa
Abstract in English, Sepedi and TswanaLearner-on-educator violence has become a significant and escalating concern within the educational landscape, particularly in public secondary schools. This phenomenon not only disrupts the teaching environment but also has profound implications for the well-being and professional efficacy of educators. This study investigated learner-on-educator violence based on the lived experiences and perceptions of 23 educators. The research followed an explorative qualitative research approach where data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The participants were all employed as teachers in nine (9) public secondary schools in the City of Tshwane West, North and South Districts of the Gauteng Department of Basic Education. Educators who participated in this study reported that the most predominant type of learner-on-educator violence that occurred in the above-mentioned Districts was verbal attacks, followed by physical abuse and then cyberbullying. The participants revealed that learner-on-educator violence, as it took place in their specific places of employment, was a result of intersecting factors such as the family background (i.e., the lack of discipline by and disrespect of parents, violence in the family, absent or uninvolved parents; peer pressure; avoidance of homework; banishing of corporal punishment; gang involvement; substance abuse; and disregard of the school code of conduct. The research findings also revealed that victims of learner-on-educator violence are not only emotionally and physically affected, but their work is also impacted negatively. To cope with the constant stress of dealing with violent learners, the research participants stated that they used disengagement coping mechanisms such as resigned acceptance, financial motivation, and retirement. Of concern, the educators revealed that they were not aware of any support structures the Districts had put in place for victims of learner-on-teacher violence in their schools. The victims relied on collaborative collegial support structures such as informal counselling by the principal or a colleague. The participants lamented that learners, in their opinion, had more rights and received more support than the teachers.
Based on the findings of the study, several recommendations are made. As explained by Bronfenbrenner’s ecological framework theory, a child’s behaviour is a result of his/her interactions with the actors within his/her mesosystem (i.e., the family, peers, community, school). Therefore, efforts to tackle violent learner behaviour should focus on utilising a whole-school or ecological approach that includes every actor in the child’s mesosystem, because “it takes a village to raise a child”. This is why a moral regeneration clarion call is made through this study for communities to go back to their roots where it truly took a village to raise a child; where the spirit of ubuntu, which promotes collectivism over individualism, was embraced; and where teachers at school were like parents in loco parentis. Also, preventative strategies aimed at reducing learner-on-educator violence should be approached through a human rights perspective, emphasising increased awareness, and understanding of all fundamental human rights. It is thus also important to teach learners that their rights should not infringe on the rights of their teachers, and that, while it is important to know their rights, they also need to exercise responsibility.Dikgaruru tša baithuti godimo ga barutiši di fetogile selo se segolo seo gape se tshwenyago ka gare ga sebopego sa thuto, kudu ka dikolong tša sekontari tša mmušo. An exploration towards developing a framework for social media utilisation for internal communication in Kenyan organisations
Over recent decades, the internet transformed human interaction by providing a dynamic platform that enables millions to communicate and socialise globally. In this context of rapid technological advance-ment, social media emerged as a powerful force, revolutionising not only personal communication but also integrating into professional environments. This thesis aims to develop a framework for the adoption and utilisation of social media for internal communication within Kenyan organisations. The research explores critical areas such as social media knowledge among employees, patterns of social media use for internal communication, benefits and challenges perceived by employees regarding social media integration, and strategies to enhance its effective adoption and utilisation in organisational settings. The study employed a qualitative research approach, employing a multiple case study design. The findings revealed that while most employees are knowledgeable about social media, they tend not to use them for internal communication, preferring traditional channels such as emails, memos, and meetings. Key demographic factors such as age, gender, and education emerged as significant determinants of social media usage, with younger and more educated employees showing greater receptiveness to these platforms. However, several challenges hinder broader adoption, including resistance to technological change, data security concerns, and a lack of adequate training. To address these issues and promote wider adoption, organisations might consider implementing targeted strategies such as comprehensive training programs, developing clear social media usage policies, and enhancing technological infrastructure. The overall impact of social media on organisational communication is viewed positively, significantly enhancing information dissemination, employee engagement, and operational efficiency. The thesis presents a novel framework for social media adoption and utilisation for internal communication in Kenyan organisations, building on insights from existing models and aligning with the Diffusion of Innovation Theory and complemented by the Uses and Gratification Theory. The framework is structured around five key phases, each corresponding to a distinct step in the Diffusion of Innovation Theory, aiming to systematically improve social media adoption in organisational settings. The thesis concludes that Kenyan organisations exhibit a strong understanding of social media as a multifaceted tool for communication, interaction, and information exchange. However, there remains some ambiguity in the classification of platforms and curiosity about evolving digital tools. Recommendations for organisations include developing clear social media policies, enhancing digital literacy, and investing in technological infrastructure to support effective social media use.D.
