Exploration revival of folktales towards morel generation: Lessons from Tshivenda folklore

    No full text
Text in English with abstracts in English and VendaThis research aims to examine how folktales can be revived and rehabilitated to restore moral values and mould children's characters. Folktales are an integral part of African oral societies. They usually relate to and describe various cultural and traditional aspects of the society in which they originate. Folktales serve a prominent function by educating young people about different aspects of the traditional oral story because they represent the values and traditions of society that young people and adults alike learn through the events they tell. Today, folktales are neglected despite their importance in preserving language, customs, and social norms. This study applied the Afrocentricity theoretical framework to understand how folktales can be revived to restore moral values and shape children's personalities. This study adopted the qualitative descriptive research approach. Document analysis was performed as a data collection instrument on the four selected Tshivenḓa folktale books. This study used purposive sampling. Data was analysed according to Tesch's (1990: 142-145) method whereby themes were generated. The research on the revival of Tshivenḓa folktales demonstrates the potential of cultural heritage in promoting moral regeneration. It highlights the ongoing importance of Tshivenḓa folklore in conveying ethical values, even amid changing societal norms. We can effectively preserve these cultural treasures by integrating folktales into educational programs, utilising digital platforms, encouraging community initiatives, and collaborating with artists. This revival is not just about preservation; it is a dynamic process that can enrich the moral fabric of society and teach valuable lessons to future generations. Ultimately, these efforts will help children differentiate between good and bad morals.Ndivho ya ṱhoḓuluso iyi ho vha u ṱola uri ngano dzi nga vusuludzwa na u tikiwa hani hu u itela u vhuedzedza mikhwa na u vhuedzedza kutshilele kwao kwa vhana. Abstract and text in EnglishEthnographic research can be defined as a qualitative research method that studies cultural practices and community behaviors through observation and participation (Hammersley & Atkinson, 1995). This study investigated the perceptions, knowledge, and traditions related to sharks and ocean resource use within Zulu traditional communities in three communities (Bhokodisa, Mvutshini and Nkampini) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Data were collected between August and November 2023, to address the gap in integrating Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) into marine conservation efforts and to explore how these communities interact with and manage ocean resources. 44 participants were invited by community gatekeepers and participated in the study. A mixed-methods approach was employed combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Sharks catch data (quantitative data) from the KwaZulu Natal Sharks Board was analysed as the baseline of the study to see the frequency of sharks caught in the study areas. Focus group discussions were conducted in all three study areas. Key findings revealed that although patterns of ocean use were broadly comparable among the three Zulu traditional communities, specific uses were localised to particular communities, reflecting subtle cultural and environmental distinctions. The findings also highlighted that fostering awareness within traditional communities is essential for advancing marine conservation goals. The study pinpoints the need for inclusive conservation policies that integrate traditional knowledge to enhance sustainable ocean resource use. By incorporating indigenous perspectives, conservation efforts can become more effective and sustainable. Indigenous knowledge and traditions being lost due to many households being single headed by the youth.M. Sc. (Nature Conservation)Environmental Science

Examination hererosexual marital couples' perceptions of emotional intelligence and other related factors as preventative measures against marital burnout

    No full text
The history of marriage is as old as history itself and there is seemingly a strong and noteworthy relationship between marriage and subjective well-being. Marriage is a significant source of affection, as well as satisfying the need for close relationships and social support. Marriage promotes health and well-being through the concepts of cohabitation, economic well-being and social support. These protective benefits of marriage play a part in an individual’s mental health. Marital satisfaction is affected when married couples experience an inconsistency between the expectations they had for the union compared to the realities that married life brings. This often results in stress and conflict within the marriage. This can lead to marital burnout where there is a gradual reduction in terms of emotional attachment to the spouse. The phenomenon of marital burnout is a type of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion that results from the mismatch between these initial expectations and the reality individuals are faced with in their marital life. In order to guard against the effects of marital burnout, couples should try to recognise and understand their spouse’s feelings, use their own emotions to improve their relationships and regulate their emotions to solve problems in the relationship. These competencies are obtained through the learnt life skill of acquiring improved emotional intelligence, which provides a person with the capacity to better manage his or her interpersonal relationships. This study aims to answer the question: Will couples who display strong elements of emotional intelligence believe this to be a preventative role in terms of marital burnout?’ ‘The study uses a qualitative approach to data collection – examining a small group of participants by gaining some insights into the subjective experiences of married couples through their own personal narratives. The data-gathering method for this research was done by means of face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with the consenting participating couples. This study highlights the importance and relevance that married couples place on emotional intelligence and the perceived benefit it has in building a lasting and happy marriage – a relationship not free of conflict, but one that can navigate the distress of a marital life.M.A. (Psychology)Psycholog

Text in English with summaries in English, Afrikaans and ZuluABSTRACT Background Public sector management can be demanding and stressful due to work pressures. This study explored how the Big Five personality traits moderate responses to occupational stress and work-life balance. Aim The research aimed to examine the relationship between occupational stress and work-life balance (WLB) among public sector managers in South Africa, identifying personality factors as moderators, categorising stress sources, exploring demographic differences, and suggesting stress management strategies. Method A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 223 public sector managers (salary levels 9-16) using the Sources of Work Stress Inventory (SWIS), Basic Traits Inventory (BTI), and Life Balance Questionnaires. Data were analysed using SPSS (Version 27), including t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlations and hierarchical regression. Results Key occupational stress factors identified included role ambiguity, job security, inadequate tools, career advancement, lack of autonomy, and workload. Time involvement emerged as a crucial WLB dimension. Significant, positive, though small, correlations were found between some occupational stress factors and WLB. Hierarchical regression showed personality traits, except neuroticism, moderated the relationship between occupational stress and WLB. Gender differences were found in neuroticism, general work stress, role ambiguity, and workload. Occupational level influenced stress perception, with senior managers displaying more neuroticism and junior managers showing higher conscientiousness. Conclusion The results of Pearson’s correlation and hierarchal regression analysis showed that overall, at higher and lower raw score values of personality traits, except for neuroticism there were positive and significant influences on the relationship between occupational stress and work-life balance. The findings suggest that human resource strategies should consider personality traits in managing occupational stress and WLB for public sector managers. Contribution This study informs the development of stress management and WLB strategies in the public sector, emphasising which personality traits help to manage occupational stress and achieve work-life balance. Personality factors predisposing public sector managers to occupational stress could be considered by human resource practitioners in the development of recruitment, selection and appointment policies when recruiting public sector managers. "Influence of Labour Relations on Organisational Performance of Selected Public Sector Institutions in Ghana"

    No full text
This study explores how labour relations, specifically collective bargaining, trade unionism, and dispute resolution, influence organisational performance in Ghana's public sector. Purposive sampling and a case study design were used in this qualitative study to collect data from 37 participants comprising of Ghanaian public sector employees (16), trade union representatives (10), and labour relations officials (11) across 15 public sector institutions. The researcher gathered data through interviews and conducted thematic and content analysis. The findings show differing opinions about how collective bargaining might improve performance in the public sector. While some participants stated that recent pay increases and agreements on health, safety, and employee rights demonstrate how collective bargaining has improved working conditions and employee morale, others pointed to leadership self-interest and limited motivational outcomes as obstacles to increased effectiveness. As a result, the influence of collective bargaining is regarded as moderate. The study also emphasises labour unionism's positive and negative aspects. Despite having secured benefits for their members, unions' impact on overall organisational performance is undermined by challenges including mandatory membership, restricted welfare support, and perceived self-serving activity. The study also reveals that although there are dispute resolution procedures in place, their efficacy is hampered by issues including lack of funding and restricted access to the National Labour Commission, which leads to a rise in strikes and a decline in morale. In conclusion, Ghana's labour relations framework has made some headway in enhancing the performance of the public sector, but there are still many obstacles to overcome. The study recommends addressing psycho-social needs in collective bargaining, improving logistical support, and using digital tools to improve labour relations. These actions could lead to a highly performing public sector in Ghana

Contribution of varistem® stemming plugs towards the reduction of blast induced ground vibrations in a quarry

    No full text
Although blasting is the most fundamental and economically sound way of conducting mining, it has been proven to have a significant impact on the surrounding environment. This includes but is not limited to structural damage, disruption of nearby communities, and operational limitations due to regulatory compliance. This research work investigates the contribution of Varistem® stemming plugs toward the reduction of blast-induced ground vibrations. Stemming plugs, designed to enhance the confinement of explosive gases help to direct the explosive energy towards breaking the rock instead of being wasted as fly rock, air blast, and ground vibrations. Field experiments were conducted in a quarry using both conventional stemming materials and stemming plugs under controlled blasting conditions. Vibration data, including peak particle velocity, frequency, and scaled distance, were collected using geophones placed at two different distances from the blast site. Statistical methods are employed to analyse the data, ranking the empirical predictor models according to their performance and comparing the effectiveness of stemming plugs in reducing ground vibrations relative to conventional stemming techniques. Statistical metrics such as MAE, R2 and RMSE were used to rank the predictor models’ performance, with the Langefors – Kihlstrom model being the most suitable model for the site. The following key limitations were faced during the study period, the first being time constraints regarding data collection. The second was restricted access to the geological and geomechanical data. The results indicated that Varistem® stemming plugs contribute to reducing blast-induced ground vibrations. Incorporating these plugs saw a 37% reduction in ground vibration levels.M. Eng. (Mining Engineering

Using visualisation to teach grade 12 heights and distances : a study in one secondary school in Zululand district of KwaZulu-Natal province

    No full text
Visualisation has been widely used to enhance learners’ conceptual understanding of problem solving in mathematics. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of visualisation in teaching and learning heights and distances in Grade 12 learners and to determine how visualisation may influence learners’ understanding and performance when solving height and distance problems. This study adopted a mixed-methods approach, utilising both quantitative and qualitative methods. A pre-test-intervention-post-test design was employed to assess the effectiveness of visualisation in teaching heights and distances in trigonometry. A pre-test and post-test were administered to 60 Grade 12 learners, divided into experimental and control groups. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the two teachers from the experimental and control groups, along with lesson observations before, during, and after the intervention. Thematic analysis was applied to analyse the semi-structured interviews and the lesson observation data. The researcher utilised Excel and SPSS tools for statistical data analysis. Microsoft Excel was used to record pre- and post-test scores for the experimental and control group results. This study proposed potential methods for using visualisation to teach and learn about heights and distances in trigonometry. The findings revealed that, prior to the intervention, the control group outperformed the experimental group in most questions on the pre-test. Following the intervention, learners' performance in the experimental group improved, resulting in better outcomes than the control group in the post-test. This indicates that the implementation of visualisation positively impacted the performance of the experimental group.M. Ed. (Mathematics Education)College of Educatio

Mary, the Eschatological Icon of the church: an analysis of the essential relationship between the blessed Virgin Mary, the church, and the human person

    No full text
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThis thesis explores Mary the Mother of Jesus’ role and eschatological inspiration concerning her relationship with the Church and the human beings. Mary’s relationship with the Church and human persons hinges upon her relationship with the Persons of the Blessed Trinity and her God given standing in the work of Redemption. While the Systematic Doctrine of Eschatology is a discipline in his own right, and so too the Doctrine of Mariology, this thesis explores the connections between Eschatology and Mariology by virtue of the fact that the Roman Catholic Church refers to her as an Eschatological Icon and her Son, Jesus Christ, as the Eschaton, whose second coming forms the central event in Christian Eschatology and who will usher in fullness of the Kingdom of God. The thesis investigates Mary, as the prime eschatological archetype, whose life and personhood provide invaluable theological paradigms for the church to work towards eschatological readiness and bring God’s plan of salvation to fruition. The thesis proposes that Catholic adherents, through fostering a subjective relationship with Mary by embracing Marian spirituality, which includes Marian consecration, is a credible means to assist the Church and her people to bring about eschatological readiness and reunion with the divine. Le thesis ihlola uMariya uMama wendima kaJesu kanye nogqozi lwe-eschatological mayelana nobuhlobo bakhe neSonto nabantu. Ubudlelwane bukaMariya neSonto nabantu buncike ebudlelwaneni bakhe naBantu bakaZiqu-zintathu Obusisiwe kanye nokuma kwakhe okunikezwe uNkulunkulu emsebenzini wokuhlenga. Ngenkathi iMfundiso Ehlelekile ye-Eschatology iyisiyalo ngokwayo futhi kanjalo neMfundiso yeMariology, le thesis ihlola ukuxhumana phakathi kwe Eschatology neMariology ngenxa yokuthi iSonto LamaRoma Katolika libhekisela kuye njenge Eschatological Icon neNdodana yakhe, uJesu Kristu, njenge-Eschaton, ukuza kwayo kwesibili kwakha umcimbi osemqoka ku-Eschatology yobuKristu futhi ozoletha ukugcwala koMbuso we UNkulunkulu. I-thesis iphenya uMariya, njenge-archetype eyinhloko ye-eschatological, ukuphila kwakhe nobuntu obunikeza ama-paradigms enkolo eyinkimbinkimbi ukuze isonto lisebenzele ukulungeleka kwe-eschatological futhi lilethe uhlelo lukaNkulunkulu lwensindiso izithelo. I thesis iphakamisa ukuthi abalandeli bamaKatolika ngokukhuthaza ubudlelwane be-subjective noMariya, ngokwamukela ingokomoya likaMarian, okubandakanya ukuzinikela kukaMarian, kuyindlela ethembekile yokusiza iSonto nabantu bakhe ukuba balethe ukulungeleka kwe eschatological nokuhlangana nobunkulunkulu.D. A descriptive account of vowel hiatus resolution strategies in Tonga (M.64) : a dialectical perspective

    No full text
Text in English with summaries in English, Northern Sotho and XhosaThis study is on vowel hiatus resolution in Tonga, specifically the Tonga spoken in Zimbabwe and the Zambian Plateau Tonga. The study identifies and examines the contexts of vowel hiatus and identifies and discusses the strategies used to resolve it, as well as the constraints in each strategy. The study is qualitative and the data were collected from 14 key participants. The main research tool for data collection was a lexical items list that was used with each participant during semi-structured interviews. The data for the study are analysed and discussed using the Optimality Theory, a theory whose key thrust is that the observable forms of language are a result of optimal satisfaction of conflicting constraints in the underlying structures. This study established that vowel hiatus is not tolerated in both varieties of Tonga, that is, the Zimbabwean Tonga variety (ZV), and the Plateau Tonga variety (PV). The study also identified the following hiatus resolution strategies used in Tonga: secondary articulation, deletion, epenthesis, coalescence and gliding. While there are many similarities in terms of vowel hiatus resolution between the two varieties, differences were noted in some causative verbal forms. In some causative verbal forms, the repair strategy that is used is palatalisation. It is argued in this study that differences in resolving vowel hiatus between the PV and the ZV abound in some contexts of vowel hiatus. However, similarities in resolving vowel hiatus between the varieties outweigh the differences. One of the conclusions made in the study is that vowel hiatus is not tolerated in Tonga, and that it is resolved using secondary articulation, epenthesis, gliding, coalescence or deletion. Further, the study concludes that while there are widespread similarities in the repair strategies for hiatus in similar contexts, there are also differences between the varieties. Furthermore, it is concluded that in some cases, a repair strategy can be followed by another phonological process in the language. The study recommends an investigation of vowel hiatus in the other Tonga varieties such as the Zambian Valley variety and Zimbabwean Moola variety.Lolu cwaningo lumayelana nokuqedwa konkamisa besiTonga, ikakhulukazi isiTonga esikhulunywa eZimbabwe kanye naseZambia Plateau Tonga. Ithuluzi elikhulu locwaningo lokuqoqwa kwedatha kwakuwuhlu lwamagama asetshenziswe umhlanganyeli ngamunye ngesikhathi senhlolovo engahlelwanga. Idatha yalolu cwaningo ihlaziywa futhi ixoxwe kusetshenziswa i-Optimality Theory, ithiyori le umgomo wayo oyinhloko ukuthi izinhlobo zolimi eziqaphelekayo ziwumphumela wokwaneliseka okuphelele izithiyo eziphikisanayo ezakhiweni eziyisisekelo. Lolu cwaningo lwasungula ukuthi ukulandelana konkamisa akubekezelelwa kuzo zombili izinhlobo zesiTonga, okungukuthi, izinhlobonhlobo zesiTonga saseZimbabwe (ZV), kanye nezinhlobonhlobo zePlateau Tonga (PV). Ucwaningo luphinde lwahlonza lokhu okulandelayo njengezixazululo zokulandelana konkamisa ezingasetshenziswa isiTonga: ukuphimisa okwesibili, ukususwa konkamisa, ukwengeza unkamisa, ukulumbana konkamisa kanye nokutshuza konkamisa. Nakuba kunokufana okuningi mayelana nokuxazulula ukunqamula onkamisa phakathi kwalezi zinhlobo ezimbili, umehluko wabonakala ezenhlotsheni zezenzo ezikhombisa imbangela yento kwezinye zezinkulumo eziyimbangela. Kwezinye izinhlobo zamagama eziyimbangela, isu lokulungisa elisetshenziswayo elokulwangisa. Kuphikiswana ngakho kulolu cwaningo ukuthi umehluko ekuxazululeni ukulandelana konkamisa phakathi kwe-PV kanye ne-ZV ugcwele kwezinye izimo zokunqamuka konkamisa. Nokho, ukufana ekuxazululeni ukunqamuka konkamisa phakathi kwezinhlobonhlobo kudlula umehluko. Esinye seziphetho ezenziwe wucwaningo luthi ukunqamuka konkamisa akubekezelelwa esiTongeni, futhi kuxazululwa kusetshenziswa ukukhuluma kwesibili, ukususwa konkamisa, ukutshuza konkamisa, ukulumbana noma ukususwa. Ngaphezu kwalokho, ucwaningo luphetha ngokuthi nakuba kukhona ukufana okwandile emaswini okulungisa ukwenqiwa konkamisa ezimeni ezifanayo, kukhona futhi umehluko phakathi kwezinhlobonhlobo. Ngaphezu kwalokho, luphetha ngokuthi kwezinye izimo, isu lokulungisa lingalandelwa enye inqubo yefonoloji olimini. Ucwaningo luphakamisa ukuthi kuphenywe ngokunqamuka konkamisa kwezinye izinhlobo zesiTonga ezifana neZambian Valley kanye neZimbabwean Moola.Thutonyakišišo ye e mabapi le tharollo ya tatelano ya ditumanoši lelemeng la seTonga, leo le bolelwago nageng ya Zimbabwe le Zambia.
