Evaluating the impact of operations management on service delivery at a local municipality.
In a larger context, local government municipalities might not only have authority and
functionality but also the responsibility to carry out their duties in challenging
circumstances. The study's main objective is to assess the operational management
variables that affect local government service delivery. The goal of this study is to help
local municipality in the Northern Cape management gain a clear understanding of the
standard of operations management, the degree of service delivery, and the degree to
which operations management factors affect delivery within the organisation.
This study aims to assess the operations management factors that affect service delivery
at the municipality using a quantitative research method approach and an online survey.
Working definitions for both variables for operations management and service delivery
were developed based on the literature. In that chapter, it was stated that operations
management could be thought of as a process that converts various organisational inputs
into outputs of the desired quality and quantity as determined by the organisation and its
stakeholders. Additionally, service delivery was defined as a part of organisational
performance that is pertinent to the public sector and relates to an organisation's capacity
to carry out a process to provide services which the public can derive value from. Overall,
the quality of service delivery was poor compared to a marginally higher standard of
operations management. Finally, using correlational analysis and regression modeling,
the impact of operations management on service delivery at municipality was discussed.
The findings showed that the variables had significant positive correlations. Once more,
it was discovered that operations management significantly affects the provision of
services. The quantitative approach used in this study ensured that the findings were
reliable and that they had been evaluated for statistical significance. However, it meant
that the study was blind to the rationale behind survey respondents' opinions. Future
research should use a qualitative approach or a mixed approach to investigate the
qualitative factors that can influence the relationship between operations management
and service delivery
Career management in the South African Police Service
The placement, lack of promotion linked with the appointment of public service employees (PSA) to police service (SAPS Act), and the turnover rate of the SAPS members pose a threat to the safety and security of the country.
The purpose of this study was to contribute to the growth of the evolving practice of the human capital by determining how career management policies and procedures leverage the advancement of highly competent and skilled employees in the SAPS. The concepts of theories and models of career management and motivation were discussed with regard to the history, conceptual foundation, theoretical approach, types, variables, and consequences. The study adopted a qualitative research approach using data collection instruments associated with both quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. The thesis focused on a sample of SAPS employees from Forensic, Detective, and HRM divisions. In the process following the implementation of the survey and interviews, ideas and themes were identified in the data.
The study found that the SAPS lacks effective career management programmes, and use career path and scarce skills policy as career management strategy. The study found that there is an absence of succession planning and that employees are unhappy with the promotional system of the SAPS. The study also found that the retention management policy is in the process of being implemented. The study recommended that to retain highly qualified and competent employees the proposed career management model would allow the SAPS to effectively manage the careers of all its members (who serve under the PSA and SAPS Act). Furthermore, it would enable the SAPS to retain its institutional knowledge and intellectual capital, which would allow it to provide better service delivery.D. Phil. The fourth industrial revolution and the future of jobs : problems and prospects in the south
This study investigated the impact of 4IR technologies on automotive industry workers, focusing on job changes in VW, BMW, Lear Corporation, and Schnellecke, the identification of organisational problems faced by workers, 4IR technology affecting employment conditions and examining worker-specific problems within the context of automotive industry original equipment manufacturer (OEMs) and suppliers. The implementation of new technologies, brought about by the fourth industrial revolution, caused many companies in the automotive industry to digitise their production processes and increase technological changes, as we have seen by the number of industrial robots being demanded by the industry and the implementation of new technology. This transition is impacting the nature and context of work for workers employed in the (OEMs) and supplier companies, as a result of its implementation in production plants and supplier companies.
This study took a qualitative form of approach and used interviews to probe the implementation of the 4IR strategies in the automotive industry. Using qualitative interviews, it is thus noticed that the problems in the implementation of 4IR strategies, like the introduction of new machinery that replaces certain manual tasks, have adverse effects on workers, such as work repositioning, natural attrition and job losses, even though the aim of the implementation of the new technology was to increase speed and profitability of the industry, as well as to make workers’ jobs easier with the prospects of eliminating harmful, strenuous and complex tasks from the body shop, paint shop and the assembly line and by creating opportunities for workers to use assistance systems to make work tasks easier and safer.
The study revealed that workers are faced with various problems of work reorganisation, short time, skills deficits, as well as health and safety problems, as a result of the implementation of the technology at automotive plants and supplier companies. This study further revealed, when evaluated, that there is an aspect of skilling and reskilling deficit for workers and suggests a model for implementation as an opportunity for workers to reskill themselves for their current and potential future job opportunitiesM.A. (Development Studies)Development Studie
Curiosity of children characters in siswati folktakes
The aim of this study is to investigate the curiosity of children in Siswati folktales. The
study seeks to uncover the occurrence and causes of children’s curiosity in Siswati
folktales. Furthermore, the study investigates the relatedness of curiosity of children
characters in folktales with curiosity of children in real life. In order to achieve the
objectives, the researcher used qualitative research methods to collect data. Data was
collected from Siswati folktales using the purposive method Functionalism theory as well
as Neuman’s (2000) analytic approach were used to analyze the data collected in Siswati
folktales. Reflecting on the findings of the research it was discovered that curiosity still
prevails in real-life children even though the setting is different. It is therefore
recommended that folktales continue to be taught since they still convey educational
lessons to children that might help both parents and children to deal with curiosity of
children in different settings.African Language
To investigate how Mobile Cellular Network Operators can increase the average revenue per user by stimulating the usage of broadband services
The objective of this research is to investigate how mobile cellular network
operators can increase the average revenue per user by stimulating the usage of
mobile broadband services. There is a general consensus that the revenue from
voice calls is slowly reaching saturation; hence, mobile cellular operators, service
providers and content providers are looking for other sources of revenue from
their new and existing customers. They are therefore beginning to focus more
intensively on customer retention and on developing new strategies that will
stimulate the usage of high speed mobile data services.
The research shows that most people are aware of many of the mobile data
services offered by operators, but that they thought that they were unreliable,
slow, difficult to use and expensive. By and large, people signed up for mobile
data services because they wanted a mobile always-on connection anytime,
anywhere, with faster speed when accessing e-mail and other services or when
downloading data from the Internet. The majority of people would use mobile
broadband internet service if it cost less to use; if the speed were faster and the
service were easy to use; if the cellular phone had a larger screen and used less
battery power; and if the keyboard were larger.
The relationship between Network operators, WASPs and content providers was
found to be good, even though at times it is strained by the increased competition
between them; this forces them not to cooperate on some issues for fear of
compromising their competitive advantage.M.B.L
Conflict management in the workplace : a case study in a technical and vocational education and training college in Mpumalanga Province
The research study aims to investigate the ways in which conflict within a certain
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College in South Africa’s
Mpumalanga Province can be effectively managed. Based on research discussed in
this report, the selected College is seen as representative (i.e. a case study) of most
TVET Colleges in Mpumalanga. Currently, this College’s students, lecturers, senior
management team, and central office staff members are experiencing ongoing conflict
on a variety of issues. Furthermore, the conflict management methods used by the
College’s senior management team and junior staff members have failed to resolve
these issues, resulting in mismanagement and poor productivity levels.
The present study utilised a qualitative research approach, with a case study,
supported by an interpretivist worldview. Purposeful sampling allowed for the
collection of data from seven participants, based on their accessibility and interest in
participating in the research. All participants engaged in semi-structured interviews for
the study. Document analysis was done of the departmental policy guides utilised by
the institution in Mpumalanga TVET Colleges.
The study found that conflict on campuses like the one investigated was due to a
number of contributing factors. It was determined that these contributing factors need
to be managed in order for TVET campuses to be viable and achieve their objective
of preparing students for the working world. With staff participation in College developed
conflict management training and commitment to resolving conflict,
together with proper direction from DHET policies, conflict within this environment can
be effectively managed.M. Ed.Educational Management and Leadershi
Developing Isindebele scientific language register for natural sciences and its classroom applications in Siyabuswa 2 circuit, South Africa
Abstracts in English, isiSwati and TshivendaSouth Africa is a multilingual country with 11 official languages recognised by constitution. Out of the eleven official languages nine are Indigenous languages: isiNdebele; seTswana; sePedi; seSotho; tshiVenda; siSwati; isiZulu, xiTsonga and isiXhosa. English and Afrikaans are the only two that not only enjoys the status of being regarded as official languages but also regarded as the medium of instructions in South African schools. These two languages are also the only ones that have scientific language registers for Natural Sciences.
With South African government aiming to shift the status quo and introducing the use of indigenous languages as a medium of instructions in South African schools (Writer, 2020). This is a boundless opportunity for black African learners as they will also be learning content subjects in their mother tongue just like their counterparts. With this proposed enormous change, the big question is do we have adequate resources (such as scientific languages registers for Natural Sciences and other science subject) written in indigenous languages to advance this initiative? The answer is no. Hence, this was the purpose of this study to add a resource which will advance this initiative. Hence the isiNdebele scientific language register for Natural Sciences was developed, but only focusing on Matter and Material in the senior phase.
When isiNdebele scientific language register was developed, the researcher was made aware that there are limited scientific terms in isiNdebele. Hence, the researcher involved different stakeholder’s such as the chairperson of isiNdebele Pan South African Language Board (PANSALB), authors of isiNdebele textbooks, isiNdebele teachers, isiNdebele Curriculum Implementors (CI)’s and senior citizens around her village. The role of these stakeholder’s in the development of this register was to assist in developing scientific terms or finding equivalent terms where the researcher failed to do so. Their recommendations and contributions greatly assisted in the development of this register.
This is a qualitative interpretative case study. Which was guided by the following research questions: What are the opportunities and challenges in the development of the IsiNdebele Natural Sciences scientific register and its application? What are the stakeholder’s perceptions about the use of isiNdebele as the language of learning and
vi
teaching Natural Sciences? How did the developed isiNdebele Natural Sciences scientific language register shape learner’s classroom interactions and discourses? Observations, semi-structured interviews and a diary were used to collect data from teachers, learners and parents. Purposive sampling was used to ensure that relevant data was collected. The collected data was analysed thematically. This study was informed by the social constructivism theory wherein amongst other aspects language is the most critical tool for communication and thought as it develops through social interaction. Language is further referred to as a medium through which meaningful learning takes place.
The findings of this study reveal that the launching of isiNdebele bilingual dictionary in 2006 attest to the steadiness of the development of this language, as it was the last one to launch a dictionary compared to other indigenous languages. Further to that the lack of scientific terms in this language negatively influences the stakeholder’s perceptions on the use of this language to teach Natural Sciences. Moreover, this would have been a hindrance to the government’s enormous transition which is giving African learners a chance to learn all the subjects in their mother tongue. However, the use of the developed isiNdebele scientific language register for Natural Sciences has shown that it can positively shape classroom interactions and discourses which is key for meaningful learning that leads to better performance in the subject. This study therefore, recommends the development of scientific language registers for Natural Sciences at school level focusing on other science topics beside Matter and Material.INingizimu Afrika live lelinetilwimi letinyenti kantsi letisemtsetfweni tingu-11 letihlonishwa ngokwentsetfo sisekelo. Striving for innovation: a quadruple helix intervention for accounting education in Ghana
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThere have been reports that most newly qualified accounting graduates in Ghana are
struggling to secure sustainable employment, mainly because they do not have
information communication and technology (ICT) and higher-order thinking (HOT)
skills and practical work experience required by employers in this era of information
technology. Against this background, the current study explored the ICT and HOT skills
that accounting students in Ghana should possess upon completion of the accounting
programme to enhance their employability by applying the quadruple helix (QH)
innovation model and the Bloom’s revised taxonomy for twenty-first-century learners.
Qualitative data was obtained mainly from document analysis of the accounting
curricula of five public universities in Ghana and in-depth interviews with the QH
innovation agents comprising government, accounting academics, employers and
accounting graduates. Thematic review procedures were followed to analyse the data
gathered for the current research.
The findings indicated that there is an increasing demand for accounting graduates to
acquire ICT skills and knowledge of software packages, such as Microsoft Excel,
Microsoft Word, internet usage, accounting software, cloud computing and data
analytics. Accounting graduates are also required to demonstrate HOT skills, such as
the ability to analyse and interpret information which is processed for decision- making
purposes as well as the ability to think outside the box. In addition to the ICT and HOT
skills, entrepreneurial and interpersonal skills also emerged as critical skills that
accounting graduates need to adapt swiftly in other achieve success in the current
competitive working environment. This requires effective collaboration among the QH
agents described in the current study, particularly in the area of creating the accounting
curricula and facilitating the work-readiness of accounting graduates to enhance their
employability.
Based on the theoretical lens, a framework that will equip future accounting graduates
with such skills to enhance their employment and performance in the workplace was
developed. The current study makes a unique contribution to the present scarcity of
studies on ICT and HOT skills based on design-based research methodology and application of QH innovative theory application in accounting education, particularly at
tertiary level in Ghana.Volgens verslae sukkel die meeste pas gekwalifiseerde rekenmeesters in Ghana om
