Leading Towards Voice and Innovation: The Role of Psychological Contract

    No full text
Background: Empirical evidence generally suggests that psychological contract breach (PCB) leads to negative outcomes. However, some literature argues that, occasionally, PCB leads to positive outcomes. Aim: To empirically determine when these positive outcomes occur, focusing on the role of psychological contract (PC) and leadership style (LS), and outcomes such as employ voice (EV) and innovative work behaviour (IWB). Method: A cross-sectional survey design was adopted, using reputable questionnaires on PC, PCB, EV, IWB, and leadership styles. Correlation analyses were used to test direct links within the model, while regression analyses were used to test for the moderation effects. Results: Data with acceptable psychometric properties were collected from 11 organisations (N=620). The results revealed that PCB does not lead to substantial changes in IWB. PCB correlated positively with prohibitive EV, but did not influence promotive EV, which was a significant driver of IWB. Leadership styles were weak predictors of EV and IWB, and LS only partially moderated the PCB-EV relationship. Conclusion: PCB did not lead to positive outcomes. Neither did LS influencing the relationships between PCB and EV or IWB. Further, LS only partially influenced the relationships between variables, and not in a manner which positively influence IWB

Integrating PBL and MT to enhance first-year students’ writing in English second language contexts: A case study of University of Limpopo, South Africa

Academic essay writing also known as student writing, tends to be a challenging task for first-year students in most universities worldwide and in particular for first-year students in English second language contexts in South Africa. This study sought to explore how an integrated project-based learning and mobile technology model can enhance student essay writing in an English second language context. This case study employed a qualitative research approach, and it is underpinned by the Online Collaborative Learning Theory which purports that collaborative learning and knowledge building using technology can promote effective learning. The sampling was purposive, and the data was collected through focus group interviews, observations, and student essays. The findings from the first phase of the study revealed that in general, the first-year English second language students found it difficult and challenging to write English academic essays. The findings from the second and third phases showed that while some students found the integrated project-based learning and mobile technology model challenging because they had very little experience of working collaboratively on a writing project, others, however, found the experience enriching. These students benefitted from the collaboration which involved, interacting, and sharing ideas in their groups, using mobile phones to search for sources as they debated on the relevance of the various sources before agreeing and deciding on the most appropriate and relevant information, then deciding on the best way to approach the essay writing task. To that end, because the students were actively engaged, justifying, and learning from each other, the group essays showed more depth, and the quality of writing was enhanced. The study recommends that the academic essay writing course should be compulsory for first-year English second language students, and it should incorporate the integrated project-based learning and mobile technology model because the students are required to not only focus on the essay writing, but they are also consciously and unconsciously expected to think about, rethink and justify their decisions and actions. This will entail the university amending its policies to allow the students to use their mobile phones in the classroom. In addition, the first-year English lecturers must be trained on how to effectively incorporate the integrated project-based learning and mobile technology model in their teaching to enhance the students’ academic essay writing competencies.D. This study investigated the influence of joint venture collaboration on the performance of multinational pharmaceutical companies (MNPCs) conducting business in South Africa. The study sample consist of five international MNPCs engaged in joint venture collaboration agreement, and four local South African non-joint venture collaboration pharmaceutical companies for the purpose of comparison. The study collected dataset from the consolidated annual financial statements over the period between 2010 and 2019. Firm performance was measured using return on assets, return on equity (ROE) and return on investment (ROI) as dependent variables. Market share, research, and development (R&D) expenditure and capital expenditure (capex) were independent variables, representing market-seeking, knowledge-seeking and efficiency-seeking motives of the company respectively. The study employed Pedroni residual cointegration test to gauge whether the variables have a long-run relationship. The pooled mean group (PMG) estimator was adopted under the auto-regression distributed lag (ARDL) for both sample-wide and firm-specific estimations. The findings of the study in the sample-wide estimations were that joint venture collaboration had a significant positive influence on the performance of MNPCs in the long run. However, in the short run, only market share mattered for the performance of the joint venture in the study. When compared with non-joint venture firms in the study, the driver of positive performance in the long run and short run was market share, while capex had a negative effect in both long run and short run. There were also firm-specific differences. The practical implication of the findings of this study is that, in the long run, joint ventures enhance firm performance; however, market-seeking is the strongest driver of firm performance in the short run. Pharmaceutical firms should therefore pursue joint venture collaboration for long-term survival and intensify efforts to grow market share or seek new markets for short-term growth and survival. Firm-specific differences indicated the need for firm-specific strategies as suitable.D. Phil. (Management Studies)Business Managemen

Text in English, abstracts in English, Southern Sotho and ZuluThe aim of this study is to evaluate the implementation of community policing in Sophiatown. The study was undertaken to determine the quality of the relationship between the police and the community; and to identify the challenges impacting on the implementation of community policing. A qualitative research approach, with the evaluation research design was followed. Data was collected using one-on-one and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with the police and community. Creswell’s Spiral Data Analysis in qualitative studies was used to analyse data collected. When analysing data collected, themes like understanding and implementation of community policing, community police-relations, establishment and responsibility of Community Police Forums (CPFs), challenges and possible solutions to challenges experienced by the forums emerged. The findings indicated a bifurcate understanding of what community policing entails, a shortage of resources, limited mutual trust and corruption. For recommendations, this study established that on-going training, development of criteria for CPF and policy on resourcing CPFs are required.Inhloso yalolu cwaningo ukuhlola ukuqhutshwa kohlelo lwezokuphoyisa umphakathi endaweni yezokuphoyisa yaseSophiatown. Student user experience of a mobile learning application at an ODeL institution in the Gauteng Province

    Get PDF
The advancements in technology and the adoption of online inventions have offered numerous opportunities for Open Distance eLearning (ODeL) institutions to conduct learning through mobile devices. ODeL institutions provide students with timeless learning through mobile learning applications (MLAs) without having to consider geographic boundaries. The provision of MLAs is meant to improve the overall learning experience of students. Therefore, it is important to find out if the user experience of students as primary users of the MLAs has been improved. This study investigated the factors that influence the user experience of students when interacting with a mobile learning application at a higher education institution. The study proposed a framework of factors that influence the user experience of students when using an MLA. The framework can serve as a guideline to provide insight concerning the perceptions, challenges and experiences encountered when using the MLA. The framework can also serve as a guideline when developing MLAs. The factors influencing the user experience of students when interacting with a mobile learning application were identified by conducting a literature review that resulted in the construction of a conceptual framework. The conceptual framework contributed to the formulation of the open-ended interview questions of this study. The qualitative data of the study was collected from University of South Africa students in the Gauteng province. Thematic analysis and the Atlas.ti software were used to analyse the qualitative data. The results of the analysed data indicated that the factors of user experience that were identified do influence the user experience of students when using the MLA. The proposed framework was presented as a contribution of this study.M.Sc. (Computing)School of Computin

The effectiveness of methods to assess teachers’ performance in Mafikeng Secondary Schools, South Africa

    Get PDF
The study investigated the effectiveness of methods to assess teachers’ performance in Mafikeng, South Africa. As enshrined in the South African Constitution, every learner has the right to quality education. It is therefore critical to examine the effectiveness of teachers’ assessment methods used in schools for quality assurance. A qualitative research approach and a case study design were used. Three secondary schools were conveniently selected to take part in the study. The population of the study was composed of Principals, Heads of Departments (HODs) and teachers with experience in teachers’ performance assessment. Data was collected through focus group interviews with teachers and in-depth interviews with principals and HODs. Document analysis was also used during data collection to ensure the credibility of the study. Thematic data analysis and presentation revealed that participants understood teacher performance assessment. It also revealed benefits associated with teacher assessment such as improved quality teaching and learning, teachers’ professional development and attainment of school goals. Findings further indicated that assessment timelines differ in selected schools. Principals, HODs, School Development Teams, Peer educators and concerned educators conduct teacher assessments. The methods that were used for teacher performance assessment are IQMS which consist of lesson observation, peer and self-assessments and assessments outside the classroom. Some schools used informal school-based assessment. Findings further revealed that IQMS is not an effective tool for teachers’ assessment because it is associated with many challenges such as too much paperwork, lack of feedback, training, and development. The study recommended that School Management Teams should work in consultation with Circuit Managers to continuously monitor the implementation of the performance assessment for quality assurance and provide prompt and constructive feedback. The Department of Education should conduct research and benchmark with international countries on the teacher performance assessment methods. They should develop clear, accurate and coherent models for the implementation of Continuing Professional Teacher Development and Quality Management System. Stufflebeam’s CIPP model of 1983 can be benchmarked with when implementing the new QMS in 2022.M. Ed. (Education Management)Educational Management and Leadershi

The South African Police Service : the experiences of forensic police officers exposed to critical incidents

    Get PDF
Background to the study: Forensic police officers are exposed to critical incidents, and the exposure to critical incidents may differ, depending on the individual concern, leading to a traumatic situation that may require psychological intervention. Against this background, the study investigated the psychological effect of critical incidents on forensic police officers. Research method: The study adopted a qualitative research approach in order to understand the experiences of forensic police officers exposed to critical incidents and how they react to traumatic conditions after attending critical incidents. The type of qualitative research design adopted was a case study, which was used to describe the individual situation to identify key issues that could be analysed. The purposive sampling method was applied when selecting participants to help the researcher obtain participants who had been directly exposed to critical incidents and could relate their experiences very well during the interviews. Five forensic police officers were selected to participate in the study, and the sample included the 24 – 59 age group. All the participants had more than five years of experience in the forensic services division. Unstructured interviews were used to collect information from the participants about their experiences as forensic police officers. Theoretical framework: The ecological system theory provides a holistic approach that encompasses a broader framework of the relationship forensic police officers have with their environment. This theory helped to understand participants’ self‐awareness, family relations, and participation in various groups of communities, and how that impacted a working environment that exposes individuals to critical incidents during the execution of activities and functions. Research findings: As much as some of them felt a calling to become forensic police officers, we cannot overlook the fact that critical incidents have a negative impact on forensic police officers. Those who participated in the study indicated that they are exposed to the following types of critical incidents while attending crime scenes: suicide, murder, serious injury, advanced decomposed bodies, gunshot wounds, and death due to fire. Concluding remarks: It is clear that exposure to critical incidents has negatively impacted forensic police officers, and there is a need for the South African Police Service (SAPS) to provide enough support for them to cope well with the effects of critical incidents. This study was a platform for forensic police officers to share their experiences and will educate the public about the work of forensic police officers. The study will also become a referral for future research studies on the exposure to critical incidents of members of the SAPS.M.A. (Psychology)Psycholog

The role of discipline in circumventing school violence in selected secondary schools of Mamelodi township in Gauteng

    No full text
This study focuses on violence occurring in schools from a holistic perspective. The increase in the number of violent cases reported as directed towards learners and teachers in most township schools located in the Tshwane South District prompted the researcher to focus his attention on a search for new and viable strategies that would be suitable and effective for the circumvention or reduction of the level of violence in schools. Therefore, this study further focused on the role that proper discipline could play in circumventing school violence. A qualitative research approach was used in the empirical investigation. The study was conducted at ten secondary schools located in Mamelodi township in Gauteng province. Purposeful sampling comprised ten school principals, ten members of the School Governing Body (SBG) (parent component), ten members of learner representative councils (LRCs), and 50 teachers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with principals, SGB members and learners from LRCs. Qualitative survey questionnaires were completed by teachers. Data were analysed and interpreted using the Constant Comparative method of data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that most teachers lack effective administrative training and support in handling issues of discipline and curbing violence. The educational level of the parent component of the SGB should be considered, as lack of education limits and interferes with the quality of policy making, interpretation and implementation, pertaining to school discipline. It was concluded that teachers, learners and parents need to be workshopped on how to effectively deal with discipline. The major recommendations of this study are that the department of education should include in its curriculum topics that deal with violent behaviour such as bullying, drug abuse, domestic violence, and suicidal thoughts in school subjects such as life orientation, and that tertiary institutions should also design and make available researched and tested conflict and violence management programmes; and infuse them into the tertiary education curriculum. Phuputso ena e shebane le pefo e etsahalang likolong ho latela pono e akaretsang. Analysis of livelihoods and food security of poor urban households: the case of urban productive safety-net beneficiaries in Ethiopia

    Get PDF
Social protection, including social assistance or safety nets, is considered a proven means of reducing poverty, promoting livelihood, improving food security and nutrition status of the poorest households. The Government of Ethiopia has initiated and implemented various policies and programmes, including urban productive safety net programme, to address urban challenges. Many studies have been conducted in Ethiopia on food security and livelihoods related topics; however, most of them are focused primarily on rural areas and in relation to the rural productive safety net programme. Although these studies are helpful in terms of the methodologies employed and the evaluation issues to be dealt with, their findings do not necessarily apply to the urban context. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to analyse the livelihoods and food insecurity status of poor urban households involved in the UPSNP in Ethiopia with special emphasis to Addis Ababa city. The study followed descriptive research design and employed concurrent mixed methods approach using both quantitative and qualitative data from primary and secondary sources. The primary data were collected from 200 UPSNP beneficiary households, located in four sub cities of Addis Ababa, through a survey questionnaire. In addition, data from 28 key informants and from field observations were collected from primary sources while the secondary data were obtained through literature and document reviews. The findings of the study indicated that the status of livelihoods of the beneficiary households has shown improvement though it has been challenged by increasing prices and the incidence of COVID-19. While there have been some desirable improvements in the food insecurity level of the beneficiary households, they have still been not food secure. Increasing prices, incidence of COVID-19 pandemic, loss of employment, and increasing house rent were identified as the most important factors that made households vulnerable to food insecurity and that have negatively affected their livelihood outcomes. In addition, the beneficiaries perceived a moderate contribution of the UPSNP to their livelihood assets, livelihood strategies and livelihood outcomes. On the basis of the findings, recommendations on improving the wage rate or increasing working days, reinforcing the coping mechanisms of beneficiary households, enhancing the contribution of the UPSNP to livelihoods, along with further research were forwarded.D.
