The dynamics of ethical climate: mediating effects of ethical leadership and workplace pressures on organisational citizenship behaviour
The world has been facing unprecedented challenges with various ethical issues within organisations, which is related to ethical leadership and decision making amongst other things. Subsequently, this paper is focused on the interrelationships between organisational culture, ethical organisational climate, ethical leadership, decision making and workplace pressures. The effect of these ethical related constructs on organisational citizenship behaviour, employee ethical behaviour, conduct, and perceived employee performance is further studied, from a macro-meso-micro perspective. This quantitative study used a cross-sectional design and survey strategy. The sample consisted of 526 participants of varying backgrounds working in “large” enterprises across diverse industries in Mauritius. The results of this study show that organisational culture and ethical organisation climate (as macro independent variables) jointly influence the dependent variables (organisational citizenship behaviour, employee ethical behaviour and conduct, and perceived employee performance) both directly and indirectly to varying degrees. It was also found that ethical leadership and decision making, and internal and external workplace pressures (as meso variables) have statistically significant mediating effects on organisational citizenship behaviour and perceived employee performance. The model proved to have a good fit and can be adopted as a guiding model for the business and research communities in fostering organisational citizenship behaviour. Lastly, recommendations were made to enhance the ethical and organisational citizenship behaviour within the corporate environment of Mauritius.Graduate School of Business Leadershi
Role of school libraries in promoting a reading culture in four high schools in Chinhoyi, Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe
A school library is essential to any school's learning and teaching activities since it serves as an information and innovation hub (Shonhe 2019). School libraries can play a crucial part in developing a reading culture (Adkins and Brendler 2015) by providing free and equitable access to reading materials to learners. According to IFLA (2015), Danladi and Soko (2018), Shonhe (2019), a school library's objectives and purposes include creating reading habits and improving information literacy abilities, as well as providing a space for collaborative learning, creativity, and independent study. This study sought to ascertain the role performed by school libraries in promoting a reading culture in the high schools of Chinhoyi in the province of Mashonaland West in Zimbabwe. Chinhoyi is the provincial capital of one of the ten administrative provinces in Zimbabwe, Mashonaland West Province. The town has four (4) high schools, of which three are government-funded high schools and one private school.
The study was qualitative and adopted an interpretive research paradigm, with focus group interviews as well as face-to-face interviews. Primary informants were learners, teachers, headmasters and librarians. ATLAS.ti 9 software was used for content analysis. ATLAS.ti is a qualitative research tool for coding and analysing transcripts and field notes, writing literature reviews, producing network diagrams, and visualising data. The research established that although some schools have libraries, learners are not using the libraries since the resources in these libraries are irrelevant to their studies and some libraries are not functional because they have no seating space and do not have librarians to run these libraries. Lastly, challenges were noted regarding the reason why reading culture is declining in Chinhoyi high schools. Amongst the main challenges were lack of resources, lack of qualified personnel to manage the library, and lack of funds to buy resources for the school libraries. Based on this study’s findings, the following recommendations were made: schools should employ qualified personnel, schools should be given funds to purchase library resources, introduce library hours on the school timetable to allow learners to read, storytelling sessions should be introduced.M. Structural characterisation of the p53 binding domain of RBBP6 and its mechanism of interaction with p53
Abstract in English, Afrikaans, ZuluWorldwide, cancer is a major health issue, causing millions of deaths every year. Retinoblastoma binding protein 6 (RBBP6) is thought to facilitate the interaction between p53 and its prototypical negative regulator, MDM2. RBBP6 has been found to be overexpressed in several cancers and its ability to interact with p53 and cause its degradation, makes it a prospective biomarker and drug target in cancer therapy. In order to target this interaction, a better understating of the p53 binding domain of RBBP6 is needed. In this thesis, expression trials were undertaken for the recombinant p53 binding domain of RBBP6 (namely RBBP6 p53BD) under several conditions. These included different bacterial cell lines, inducer concentrations and post-induction growth time, as well as the domain with and without a polyhistidine tag. The best expression conditions found were NiCo21 (DE3) cells, 37 °C, 0.1 M IPTG and 16 hours post-induction growth. A three-step purification protocol is presented for the polyhistidine-tagged RBBP6 p53BD, utilising hydrophobic interaction and nickel IMAC chromatography. RBBP6 p53BD was purified to approximately 95 % homogeneity. The purified recombinant domain was shown to have structure and be functional as it could bind endogenous p53. The domain was characterised using clear native PAGE and far-UV CD and was found to exist in a single monomer form. Its secondary structure was predicted to be largely intrinsically disordered with 59 % random coil, 19 % alpha-helices, 9 % beta-strands, and 13 % turns. The stability of the domain was also investigated using far-UV CD when the protein was exposed to increasing temperature or known denaturants. The spectrum produced by RBBP6 p53BD with increasing temperature showed a gain in secondary structure and high percentage recovery of its native state after returning to starting temperature. Greater structural changes were seen in the presence of denaturants, with the greatest structural change and lowest percentage recovery seen in the presence of guanidinium chloride. High purity and stability are important for future investigations into the structure of RBBP6 p53BD and drug interaction studies. Localisation images produced from immunocytochemistry experiments are presented here that show different subcellular localisation of RBBP6 and p53 in the cancer cell lines A549, MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 and compared to the normal cell line, HEK293 T. With normal cells having the highest localisation of RBBP6 in the nucleus and negligible localisation in the cytoplasm. Cancer cells still showed the high localisation in the nucleus but higher localisation in the cytoplasm than normal cells. Colocalisation images of p53 and RBBP6 in cancer cell lines are also presented, indicating that p53 and RBBP6 localise in similar cell regions. Using the plugin JACoP from ImageJ, the Manders coefficient of p53 to RBBP6 was predicted to be 0.761 in MCF7 cells and 0.784 in A549 cells. The Manders coefficient of RBBP6 to p53 was found to be 0.904 for MCF7 and 0.834 for A549 cells. The Pearson’s coefficient was found to be 0.759 for MCF7 and 0.630 for A549 cells. This Indicates positive colocalisation of p53 and RBBP6 in both MCF7 and A549 cells, suggesting that these proteins could interact in vivo. Co-immunoprecipitation assays were performed and showed the ability of endogenous p53, RBBP6 and MDM2 to interact and form a complex in vitro in cancer and normal cell lines. Thus supporting RBBP6 as a facilitator to p53 and MDM2’s interaction in human cells as well as supporting RBBP6 as a potential cancer therapy drug target. Dit ondersteun dus RBBP6 as 'n fasiliteerder in p53 en MDM2 se interaksie in menslike selle, asook RBBP6 as 'n potensiële kankerterapie-teiken.Emhlabeni wonke, umdlavuza uyinkinga enkulu yezempilo, ebulala izigidi zabantu minyaka yonke. Qualitative exploration of perceived barriers of exclusive breastfeeding among pregnant teenagers in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana
Abstract
Background
The World Health Organization endorses exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of every child’s life since exclusive breastfeeding has the potential of saving thousands of infants’ lives. The global exclusive breastfeeding rate among mothers is sub-optimal. This predisposes infants born to teenage mothers to all types of ailments. Therefore, this study explored the factors that inhibit the practice of exclusive breastfeeding as perceived by pregnant teenagers in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana which is an urban area.
Methods
The study used techniques in qualitative descriptive exploration to collect data from 30 pregnant teenagers through focus group discussions. Six focus group discussions were conducted and each group was made up of five participants. Informed consent was obtained from participants who were 18 years and above as well as parents of participants below 18 years while informed assent was obtained from participants below 18 years after purposive sampling. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed and data were analysed through content analysis.
Results
Two major themes and eight sub themes emerged from the data after analysis. Personal related barriers (negative emotional feelings, irrational thinking, perceived health risks to the baby and perceived self-inefficacy) and social related barriers (provider-client interaction, disapproval of exclusive breastfeeding by close relatives, unfriendly workplace policies and social myths) were the perceived factors that discouraged exclusive breastfeeding among teenage mothers.
Conclusion
Health professionals should be trained to provide culturally sensitive care to teenage mothers in order to promote exclusive breastfeeding. The media, religious leaders and politicians should help debunk misconceptions about breastfeeding expressed by participants in the study
Energy impoverishment and burns: The case for an expedited, safe and inclusive energy transition in South Africa
Energy poverty is the constrained access to modern forms of energy. In South Africa, energy impoverished communities are dependent on a mixture of solid fuels (e.g. wood or coal) and hydrocarbons such as paraffin. These, especially paraffin use, are associated with significant negative health outcomes, particularly burns due to accidental fires and spillages, but also paraffin ingestion, and toxic fume inhalation. The energy-poor furthermore suffer disproportionate long-term social, economic and psychological impacts that entrench their impoverished conditions. There is both international and national recognition of these adverse effects of energy poverty and that the universal access to safe and sustainable energy is crucial for the attainment of health and other global social, economic and well-being goals. South Africa is called on to expedite access to modern energy usage, through the enactment of a substantive policy on the provision of safe, clean and affordable energy for energy-impoverished communities and households.Institute for Social and Health Studies (ISHS
Examining Challenges Encountered by Women in Leadership: A Case Study on an SA SME Pharmaceutical Organization
The research sought to investigate whether women in leadership positions in an SME
pharmaceutical company in South Africa are encountering challenges and whether
these challenges are a result of specific barriers. The research therefore identified and
attempted to analyse what the challenges are that women in leadership positions in
the SME pharmaceutical organisation are encountering or have encountered and
whether these challenges are a result of historical barriers against women in
leadership positions still being in existence and experienced in the SME environment.
Consequently, the research questions and objectives focussed on identifying the
challenges encountered and if there were specific barriers that contribute to women in
leadership positions challenges within the SME. The sample selection would have
consisted of seven present and six past female staff members that either currently
hold or previously held a leadership position within the organisation. In the end, indepth one-on-one interviews were conducted with six participants using a semistructured open-ended discussion guide. The research study used a
phenomenological method with a non-probability sampling technique, followed by
thematic analysis. The finding was that although a shift in perceptions about females
taking up leadership positions has been noted, this shift is not occurring quickly
enough. The main challenges identified “social paradigm” barriers such as the working
environment, mentorship, training, and perception challenges faced by female
leadership. SME organisations are encouraged to promote leadership morale through
effective directed mentoring, learning and development programmes to enrich their
leadership staff. Furthermore, by reducing bureaucracy, mid-level leadership may be
able to make effective decisions which could foster a growth mindset
Hospital-based evaluation of palliative care among patients with advanced cervical cancer: a cross-sectional study
Background: Palliative care is among the standards of care in cancer treatment that should be provided to those in need within the existing healthcare system. In Ethiopia, patients with cervical cancer experience a long wait for curative radiotherapy, while the level of palliative care delivery is unknown. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the practice
of palliative care among women diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Using a structured questionnaire, face-to-face interviews were made with randomly selected patients with advanced cervical cancer. Information on patient characteristics, medical records, and knowledge, attitude and practice of palliative care was captured, analysed, and presented. Data collection was conducted following ethical standards after obtaining approval from the hospital.
Results: A total of 385 patients were interviewed, most of whom were over 50 years and illiterate. The patients had poor knowledge regarding comprehensive palliative care, a good attitude, and poor practices. Most patients either do not know about palliative care or consider it solely as a pain treatment. The patients expressed a good attitude towards palliative care; however, their attitude towards talking about suffering, death, and dying was poor. Almost all patients have received some form of palliative care. However, poor pain control, inadequate education and counselling, and poor social, economic, and spiritual supports were documented. Conclusions: Patients with advanced cervical cancer expressed a good attitude but had poor knowledge and practice of comprehensive palliative care. The palliative care delivery needs to address the communication, psychosocial, economic, and spiritual components of the comprehensive palliative care.College of Human Science

Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThe well-being of employees influenced the way in which they performed and ultimately impacted the effectiveness of an organisation. The interdependent and mutually beneficial relationship between an organisation and its employees needs to be addressed to adequately adapt to the increased change, competition and volatility within today’s world of work.
The overall objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the concepts of Employee Well-being (EWB) and Organisational Effectiveness (OE) in a bond origination company in South Africa. More specifically, the relationship between the constructs of EWB (namely Job satisfaction, Work engagement, Burnout and Workaholism) and a Composite OE Score. The measuring instruments used included the Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (JSQ), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), the Dutch Workaholism Scale (DWS), the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OBI) and the Organisational Performance Questionnaire (OPQ). A convenience sample of 203 respondents was achieved and included employees of all genders and managerial and non-managerial positions.
Results indicated that three of the four constructs of EWB, namely Burnout (r = -.452, p < .001), Job satisfaction (r = .667; p < .001) and Work Engagement (r = .587; p < .001) were found to be statistically significantly related to a Composite OE Score. The relationship between Workaholism and OE (r = -.060, p = .394) was weak, negative and not statistically significant. Furthermore, three of the four constructs of EWB are statistically significant predictors of a Composite OE Score, accounted for 99.3% of the variance of a Composite OE Score.
Impilonhle yabasebenzi inomthelela kwindlela abasebenza ngayo kanye nokuba nomthelela ekusebenzeni kahle kwenhlangano. An assessment of the protection of affected persons' right during business rescue in South Africa and judicial management in Botswana
This study compares the extent to which the provisions of judicial management under the Botswana Companies Act 32 of 2003 (Cap 42:01) and the business rescue proceedings under the Companies Act 71 of 2008 of South Africa protect the interests and rights of creditors, shareholders and employees of a company (‘affected persons’). There is a consensus that a modern and effective corporate rescue in most cases offers a more beneficial option to company liquidation for all the stakeholders involved. The regulatory framework within which companies operate ought to have an effective mechanism for corporate rescue which considers the competing interests of the affected persons. This dissertation will identify several inadequacies inherent in the judicial management procedure in Botswana. It argues that the judicial management procedure in Botswana is inadequate in safeguarding and balancing the interests and rights of affected persons. It is contended that South Africa has made tremendous progress in protecting the rights of affected persons through the business rescue provisions under Chapter 6 of the Companies Act 71 of 2008. The dissertation will recommend an overhaul of the whole judicial management regime in Botswana. In the end, a business rescue model for Botswana is proposed, which is heavily influenced by the South African business rescue procedureCollege of La
