The construction of linguistic identities in Levubu : an investigation of language attitudes and perceptions of Black Afrikaans speakers towards Afrikaans in post-apartheid South Africa

    No full text
The notion of identity is complex. Identities are not fixed, but fluid and multifaceted. They are constantly negotiated and re-negotiated under different circumstances and situations for a variety of reasons. Human identity is negotiated through various aspects, such as, among others, language, accent, religion, dress, location and dance. Identity acts and performances can evoke different responses from people, for example when one speaks a certain variety of a language, people may respond to it either negatively, positively or have no response to the variety at all. Having said that, this thesis explored and investigated the language attitudes of black Afrikaans 1speakers (who speak and identify with Afrikaans, together with Tsonga and/or Venda) of Levubu (a farming community in the outskirts of Louis Trichardt), towards Afrikaans in post-apartheid South Africa. It also explored how the Afrikaans language is used as an identity marker and a distinguishing factor amongst inhabitants of Levubu. Levubu is a small farming community with a population estimated at 207 (Census 2012), therefore 40 participants 2(both male and female, and young and old) were selected for this study. To answer the research question and elicit rich data from the participants, this study was guided by and employed a multisemiotic approach to data collection in the form of questionnaires, language portraits and interviews. Results from data analysis reveal that participants generally have positive attitudes towards Afrikaans and the language is used as a medium of communication on a daily basis in Levubu. Subjects also revealed positive attitudes towards Afrikaans by associating the language with positive attributes such as farming, love, green pastures, food etc. in their mapping of the language portrait. Together with the continued use and dominance of Afrikaans, multilingualism, code-switching and code-mixing are also prevalent in Levubu. In other words, Levubu residents transcend their linguistic and cultural boundaries to reach their communication goals. To sum up, this thesis finds identity, particularly linguistic ones, to be slippery, a social construct, contradictory and location (speech community) based.M. A. An action research project to improve teacher wellbeing in a South African primary school

    No full text
The aim of this study was to improve teacher wellbeing by means of action research. The conceptual framework comprised the theories of Seligman and the PERMA model, Ryff’s model of wellbeing, Lyubomirsky’s theory of wellbeing and Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy. The study was conducted in a small independent South African school. The non-probability sample included five teachers at the school who were accessible. Four action research cycles were completed via four intensive workshop sessions focusing on teacher wellbeing in general, interpersonal relationships, workload and time management, as well as teacher support and resilience. The teachers were also given activities to complete at home. Data on teacher wellbeing was collected by means of observation, interviews and a questionnaire. Through the various techniques employed during the action research project, the teachers’ wellbeing was enhanced. Recommendations for further improvement and for follow-up study were made. The limitations of the study were also highlighted.M. Ed. (Psychology of Education)Psychology of Educatio

Enhancing the realisation of the right to development through devolution in Kenya

    Get PDF
The Right to Development (RTD) is not a new issue in human rights practice, having received recognition as an inalienable human right by the United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development (UNDRTD) in 1986, more than 30 years ago. The RTD has also featured in past and recent agreed international policy documents such as; the 1993 Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs) among others. Despite its international recognition as a human right, the schism between the global North and the global South has made it difficult for the UN to adopt a binding international human rights treaty on the RTD. The UN only released the first draft of the international human rights treaty on the RTD in January 2020. This thesis makes a case for the realisation of the RTD through devolution, as an appropriate national development policy in Kenya while international consensus on the RTD is still being sought. This thesis argues that devolution in Kenya is designed to support the realisation of the RTD. This hypothesis is anchored on the argument that devolution in Kenya and the RTD share certain common elements such as; participation of the people, equity and the realisation of all human rights including the right to self-determination. This commonality therefore makes it possible for devolution in Kenya to augment the realisation of the RTD. This thesis also argues that devolution in Kenya led to the birth of a development paradigm that is compliant with the RTD. This is discernible by delineating the features of devolution that support the realisation of the RTD. This thesis practically demonstrates how devolution has influenced equitable development, participatory development and the realisation of all human rights in Kenya as evidence of a RTD compliant development paradigm. The decentralisation experiences of Ethiopia, South Africa and Germany indicate that while a decentralized system of government invariably activates the elements of the RTD such as equity and participation, deliberate policy and legislative steps have to be undertaken to align development programmes with the RTD. Additionally, ii the normative and institutional design of the decentralised system of government is key in securing the elements of the RTD. For Kenya, this means that more has to be done beyond the normative and institutional structures of devolution in Kenya to make the RTD a reality in Kenya. Deliberate efforts have to be taken to align development praxis at county level in Kenya. Some of the recommendations to this end include making devolution functional, devolving human rights practice and raising awareness about the RTD.LL. D.Public, Constitutional, and International La

A study on information privacy concerns and expectations of demographic groups in South Africa

    No full text
Globally, there is growing concern over transparency and fairness when processing personal information and upholding the privacy of individuals. South Africa faces specific challenges in defining and implementing privacy policies and guidelines while meeting individuals’ expectations as to how their personal information is handled. There is limited data available about individual concerns and expectations for privacy in South Africa across demographic groups. Such data can aid in informing privacy policies and guidelines and addressing differences and sensitivity among demographical groups concerning information privacy. This paper explores the information privacy concerns and expectations of individuals in South Africa. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey using the Information Privacy Concern Instrument (IPCI) that was developed in previous studies in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) No. 4 of 2013 of South Africa. Privacy concern was found to be high in South Africa, while confidence in organisations meeting data privacy principles was low. Statistically significant differences showed that older participants, females and white participants had higher privacy expectations than Generation Y participants, males and black participants, who were more confident that organisations were meeting privacy principles. A visual index for information privacy concerns and expectations is proposed to comprehend it across demographic groups and to monitor change going forward. The recommendations provided can serve as input for further development of privacy guidelines by stakeholders such as the South African Information Protection Regulator and responsible parties handling personal information while considering differences among demographical groups in South Africa concerning information privacy.School of ComputingNational Research Foundation (NRF

The support of juveniles in a Gauteng correctional school : a wellness perspective

    No full text
Abstracts in English, Zulu and Southern SothoThe study explores how juvenile offender learners may be supported regarding their wellness in a Gauteng correctional centre school. The Wellness and Ubuntu theories guided the study. These theories helped to understand how juveniles were supported as they experienced several educational deficits, many of which were not addressed by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) personnel. A constructivist paradigm was appropriate for the study for the following reasons: firstly, constructivism recognises the complexity and diversity of participants and their perspectives about the situations under study. It also privileges to the ways in which individual knowledge and experiences are constructed through perception, reflection and meaning making. Secondly, constructivist researchers develop an understanding of other people’s behaviours and perspectives through their relationships with the participants. This study was conducted in a Gauteng correctional school where the participants both live and study. The school as a unit of analysis provided insight into the challenges and complex world of the lived experience of the juveniles. Participants were purposefully selected to ensure relevant data was gathered. Twenty-four juveniles who participated were attending school. Furthermore, teachers who were teaching in a correctional school participated in the study. Data was collected from sampled participants using open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and observations. The researcher analysed data manually. The themes that emerged revealed that teachers were making a great effort to support the wellness of juvenile learner offenders. The findings revealed that juveniles encountered many challenges in their physical, emotional, academic, political, economic and social conditions, which led to their incarceration. A wellness framework was proposed to assist teachers with strategies to support physical, social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and career dimensions.Injongo yalesisifundo kwakungu kuphenya nokuthola imibono indlela abafundi abayiziboshwa bangasizwa ngayo mayelana nenhlalo yempilo yabo ngaphakathi kwesikole esisetilongweni iGauteng. This is my review of Hilary Bradbury's latest book (2022) concerning Action Research for Transformation at a time of Eco-social crisis. When I first opened this book and saw Hilary Bradbury’s dedication “to land, culture and sustainable transformations” on the first page, coupled with her Blessing on Action Research for Transformation (ART) on page v, I knew that the book would resonate with my understanding of the importance of organizing research that is intentionally future forming (as Kenneth Gergen, 2015, succinctly puts it, and as he reiterates in his Foreword to the book).Adult Basic Education (ABET

Impact of a Scratch programming intervention on student engagement in a Nigerian polytechnic first-year class: verdict from the observers

    No full text
An engaging first programming class (CS1) often inspires students’ passion for computer science (CS). However, the evidence in the literature suggests that the average CS1 classes are anything but engaging for many students. The performance of CS compared to other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses in international student engagement surveys seems to substantiate CS1 failure, attrition rates, and lack of diversity in most CS classes. Meanwhile, for its simplicity in introducing programming to beginners, primary and secondary schools use Scratch, an educational programming environment developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. For the same reason, higher institutions now include some forms of Scratch instruction in CS1. The question remains, to what extent is Scratch engaging, especially for students in higher education? This study addressed this gap by observing college computer science students exposed to a constructionist Scratch programming pedagogy. We adopted a descriptive design based on quantitative observations. To observe the class during a weekly 2-hour session, we employed five CS educators, one observer per week. Each observer, employing a 20-item observation protocol, rated the extent of affective, behavioral, and cognitive engagement of first-year CS students in a polytechnic in North Central Nigeria. Most of the students were learning to program for the first time. Analysis of the data showed a significant agreement in the ratings of the five observers for overall student engagement, although the impact was moderate. However, while agreement in their ratings for affective engagement was significant, with a large effect, there was no significant concordance in their ratings for behavioral engagement. Observers also significantly agreed in their ratings for cognitive engagement; however, the impact was moderate. These findings suggest that employing Scratch in higher education can be engaging and useful, especially for students with no prior programming experience.Institute for Science and Technology Education (ISTE

Ubudlelwane phakathi kobuholi boqobo kanye nosiku lokusebenza

Summaries in English, Afrikaans, ZuluThe aim of this quantitative study was to determine the relationship between Authentic Leadership (AL) and a High-Performance Culture (HPC) in an alcohol beverage company in the South African Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) business. The study used a random sample of 161 people from a population of 350, which included both management and non-managerial staff at various levels within the company. The Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) was used to assess AL, whereas the High-Performance Culture Questionnaire (HPCQ) was used to assess HPC. Internal consistency Cronbach's alpha for the ALQ was .96, while for the HPCQ it was .97, both considered as excellent for data collection in this study. The findings revealed a statistically significant relationship between a Composite AL Score and all four AL constructs and a Composite HPC Score (Composite AL Score = .78; Rational transparency = .74; Internalized moral perspective = .74; Balanced processing = .70; Self-awareness = .75; all at the p < 0.05 level of significance). Results of the study also indicated that a Composite AL Score could explain 60% of the variance in a Composite HPC Score (adjusted R2 = 0.601). This finding was confirmed by the significance of the F-value in the ANOVA calculation (F = 241,593; p < .001). It was thus concluded that a Composite AL Score could statistically significantly predict a Composite HPC Score in a FMCG organisation. Limitations of the study were a scarcity of research on the relationship between AL and a HPC within a South African context, which made it difficult to compare the results of the current study with another research. Secondly, the study was conducted in one FMCG organisation in one region in South Africa, making generalisations to other organisations problematic. Recommendations included that more studies be conducted on the relationship between AL and a HPC, and that the current study be replicated in other industries besides the FMCG industry. Inhloso yalolu cwaningo lwe-quantitative bekuwukubheka ubudlelwane phakathi kwe-Authentic Leadership (AL) kanye ne-High-Performance Culture (HPC) kwinkampani yeziphuzo zotshwala kwibhizinisi le-South African Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Ucwaningo lusebenzise isampuli ye-random yabantu abangu 161 kwisibalo sabantu abangu 350, obekubandakanya kubo abaphathi kanye nabasebenzi abangebona abaphathi kwinkampani. Okutholakele kubonise amanani abalulekile obudlelwane phakathi kwe-composite AL score kanye nemiqondo emine yama-AL kanye ne-composite HPC score (composite AL score = .78; rational transparency = .74; internalised moral perspective = .74; balanced processing = .70; self-awareness = .75; all at the p < 0.05 level of significance). Imiphumela yocwaningo ibuye yakhombisa ukuthi i-composite AL score ingachaza u 60% we-variance in a composite HPC score (adjusted R2 = 0.601). Audiovisual practice in South African correctional centers: a case study of the department of correctional services' AV Unit and its outputs

    No full text
Summaries in English, Tswana and AfrikaansThis qualitative research explores a case study of the Department of Correctional Services’ audio-visual (AV) unit and outputs. The purpose of a non-security AV unit within the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and how it functions within a strict and rigid context of a correctional services’ environment are established. This research further explores, analyses and discusses the meanings and ideologies that are embedded within the DCS-produced moving images and the current representation that they create of the DCS as an institution in the South African democratic context. Anchored in an interpretivist paradigm, this study is conducted through case study and content analysis approaches. This research area is under-researched, which necessitates a case study approach, as it enables the study to be explored for its complexity and particularity as a single case. The content analysis approach applies to the findings of the following data collection methods: an in-depth interview, a thematic consideration of the DCS documents, and the DCS videos. The findings of the DCS documents are further compared with the findings of the in-depth interview. The validity and credibility of the findings are ensured through a triangulation of theories, data collection methods, and interpretation methods, in order to avoid a narrow approach to both data collection and interpretation. The theoretical framework includes semiotics, multimodal discourse analysis (MDA), ideology in moving images, framing theory, and ethics in producing moving images. The meanings of the DCSproduced videos are analysed through semiotic and multimodal discourse analytic methods. The key findings from the different data sets of the DCS reveal an AV practice that lacks adequate strategic operation and management characterised by insufficient staff numbers, lack of guiding documentation, and videos which – amongst other important findings – publicise political leaders rather than the institution itself. (Communication Science)Communication Scienc
