Commoditisation’s impact on the economic sustainability of primary automotive suppliers in South Africa: the case of the automotive chemicals industry

    No full text
Summaries in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThe re-integration of the domestic automotive industry into the global operating environment has led to increased levels of competition, increased supply chain complexity, escalating input costs, and declining product prices within the automotive industry. Consequently, domestic manufacturers of specialty chemical products for the automotive industry in South Africa face numerous challenges that threaten their profitability and long-term economic sustainability. This study is directed at the concern of the phenomenon of commoditisation and its impact on the future economic sustainability of domestic automotive chemicals businesses supplying specialty process chemicals to the South African automotive industry. The aim of this dissertation was to explore and identify the major challenges facing the South African automotive chemical industry and specifically examine the impact of the cost and price dimensions of commoditisation on business profitability and the economic sustainability of this industry in South Africa. An exploratory qualitative research design using a thematic data analysis approach was adopted for this study. Viewpoints of six key participants, selected by the researcher based on their industry expertise, were collected using one-on-one, in-depth semi-structured interviews to empirically establish the factors present in the industry that could lead to commoditisation. The study established that the results could be categorised according to five themes representing key factors present in the industry that are linked to the price and cost dimensions of commoditisation, namely “competitive environment,” “industry factors,” “operational factors,” “commoditisation,” and “business relationships and power.” The study concluded that the continued presence of the factors identified would progressively lead to diminishing profit margins and adversely impact the long-term economic sustainability of domestic automotive chemical supplier businesses. Focused actions such as improving business relationships with automotive customers, striving to achieve supply chain excellence, and regular scanning of the business environment for signals of encroaching commoditisation were recommended to enable automotive chemical supplier businesses to strategically manage commoditisation and improve profitability. Ukuhlanganiswa kabusha kwemboni yezimoto yasekhaya endaweni yokusebenza emhlabeni wonke kuholele ekwenyukeni kwamazinga okuncintisana, ukwanda kwenkimbinkimbi yochungechunge lokuhlinzeka, ukukhuphuka kwezindleko zokufakwayo, kanye nokwehla kwamanani entengo yemikhiqizo ngaphakathi kwemboni yezimoto. Barriers faced by female educators when applying for promotional positions in schools

    No full text
The aim of the study was to investigate barriers that female educators face when applying for promotional positions in education. This study was based on pragmatic paradigm, mixed method research design and approach. In view of the research design of this study, two types of sampling methods were used in the study, namely; purposive sampling which was used in the qualitative study and simple random sampling, which was used in a quantitative study. In this study, the qualitative sample consisted of five principals, five teachers and five School Governing Body (SGB) chairpersons and the quantitative sample consisted of 25 educators. An unstructured interview method was used to collect qualitative data and the data collected were analysed qualitatively by means of thematic analysis method. Face-to-face questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data and the data collected were analysed quantitatively by means of Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS). The analysis of data is presented in four sections, namely, the analysis of data collected from (a) principals (b) teachers (c) School Governing Body (SGB) and (d) deputy principals and heads of department. The research results were analysed and interpreted by means of frequency counts, which were translated into charts and tables. The findings of this study revealed several barriers to management positions, for example, domination by men, lack of leadership and management skills, lack of self-confidence, corruption in the schools, discrimination and women do not want to work far from their children or homes. These barriers are a burden to women because they become demoralised, demotivated and bitter. This study will assist in removing the barriers faced by women when applying for promotional positions and improves their positions in schools. I therefore recommend that this study be used to serve as a guideline and a document that can be referred to in order to address the barriers and all the imbalances mentioned in all the chapters. Women also should be given a fair chance to prove their ability and potential as managers in schools.M. Ed. (Educational Leadership and Management)Educational Leadership and Managemen

Disaster preparedness and management plan for the hospitals within Addis Ababa Administration Health Bureau, Ethiopia

    No full text
The study aimed at developing a disaster preparedness and management plan for the hospitals in Addis Ababa Administration Health Bureau. The objectives of the study were to explore and describe the nature and types of disasters encountered in the hospitals, hospitals' response to the disaster, ensuring preparedness for and management of disasters, the challenges facing hospitals in disaster management, and the effects of disasters in hospitals. The mixed-methods research design was used to conduct the study. The data were collected from hospital staff working under the Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau. A questionnaire and individual in-depth interviews were employed to collect the data. A simple descriptive statistic was used to analyse the data for the quantitative phase, as well as frequency distribution tables and graphs. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis. The study revealed that, for most people, 40.7% of the incidents that occur in hospitals result from transportation accidents. Only 11.9% of hospital employees in the study area were members of disaster management committees; emergency supplies were not readily available for immediate distribution, there was a poor security service, and only 23.8% had received disaster management training. This study concludes that Addis Ababa city administration hospitals are below standard regarding disaster preparedness and disaster management. Finally, the study recommends that government officials and policymakers should design appropriate policies and interventions to empower hospital staff to fill gaps by themselves, particularly managers living in administrative areas in the hospital.D. No full text
Background and Aims: Home remedies are understood to mean medications or tonics prepared at home to treat certain ailments without any prescription or professional supervision. Reliance on home remedies increased during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). The aim of this integrative review was to identify home remedies used to treat and prevent COVID‐19 and discuss implications for nursing practice and health related to the safety and efficacy of home remedies. Methods: Cooper's integrative review method guided this study to identify home remedies used to prevent and treat COVID‐19. Google Scholar, BMC, EBSCOhost, Medline, Academic Search Ultimate, Web of Science Core Collections, Science Direct and Global Health were used to search for relevant information on the use of COVID‐19 home remedies from 2019 to 2022. The Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) checklist was used to select studies that had to be included. The eligibility criteria included studies on home remedies, written in English from 2019 to 2022. Findings of qualitative, quantitative and mixed‐methods research were extracted, and narrative thematic data synthesis was applied. Results: Eleven articles which met the inclusion criteria were found in nine countries: Ghana (1), South Africa (1), Tanzania (1), Togo (1) and Zimbabwe (1), Bangladesh (1), Hong Kong (1), India (2), Iran (1), and Pakistan (1). Findings showed that home remedies are used for the prevention of COVID‐19 infection, treatment of COVID‐19, and boosting immunity. Conclusions: Home remedies have been found to be more pronounced across all sectors and social strata. More research is needed on the use of home remedies for life‐threatening outbreaks. Policymakers and healthcare workers are challenged to encourage the use of home remedies in the prevention of other ailments and epidemics that might occur in the future.Health Studie

Financial development and economic growth in Botswana: new evidence from disaggregated data

    No full text
In this study, the causal relationship between financial development and economic growth in Botswana is re-examined using disaggregated data from 1980 to 2020 on financial development. The importance of financial development and economic growth in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) cannot be overemphasised. Between economic growth and financial development, the ability to influence the right variable allows policy makers in Botswana to achieve the desired economic growth levels that make achieving SDGs possible. Financial development is measured at an aggregate level by the Financial Development Index (FDI) and at a disaggregate level by the Financial Institution Index (FII) and Financial Market Index (FMI) from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) financial development index database. Using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach to cointegration and ECM-based causality, the study found no distinct causal flow between economic growth and financial development. The study did find an indirect causal flow from economic growth to financial development through the gross fixed capital formation link, thereby confirming the financial demand hypothesis. This finding points to the importance for Botswana to continue with the Vision 2036 and the National Development Plans that focus, among other goals, on economic growth, to realise an increase in gross fixed capital formation and financial development.Economic

Advancing quality education through the national school funding model in a rural South African context

    Get PDF
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Northern SothoThrough the national school funding model, South Africa faces its greatest challenge in advancing quality education in rural schools. Many years into democracy, rural schools do not show significant improvements as they struggle to meet their needs. It is evident from the National Norms and Standards for School Funding (NNSSF) policy that education funding in South Africa is geared towards equity and redress rather than quality education. As a result, previously advantaged schools in urban areas are moving towards quality education while those in poor and previously disadvantaged rural communities are falling behind. This study examined how quality education can be advanced in rural South Africa through the national funding model. A qualitative research approach was followed to collect data through interviews, observation and document analysis. The study attributes these challenges to the role of government in ensuring that funding is allocated according to the needs of the schools. The qualitative case study method was used for this study. The sample for this study comprised six school principals, six SGB finance committees, one Circuit Deputy Manager: Governance, one District Chief Education Specialist: Governance and one Provincial Deputy Chief Education Specialist responsible for school funding allocations. Three qualitative data collection instruments, namely a semi-structured interview schedule, an observation schedule and document analysis, were used in this study. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data collected through the three instruments. The results revealed the challenges schools in rural communities face in implementing the national funding model to ensure quality education. The study found that there is still an unintended connection between what the government expects schools in rural communities to do and what these schools are practically able to do through state-allocated funding. The study calls for the national school funding model to be reviewed by considering specific needs and contexts. The revised model will assist, as adequate funding leads to quality education. ʼn Kwalitatiewe gevallestudie is onderneem. An investigation of the difficulties in teaching and learning of genetics and related topics

    Get PDF
The focus of this study is to investigate the teaching and learning difficulties and their causes in genetics and related topics at grade 12 in Port Elizabeth District, South Africa. Qualitative and quantitative methods of research were both used to find answers to which genetics topics do learners and educators experience difficulties, the causes, and the possible solution to this problem. The qualitative design addressed the enquiry on the causes and the solutions to learning and teaching difficulties in genetics and related topics. The educators and learners had to express themselves relating their experiences as to the causes of the difficulties and how they think would be the effective way in solving these difficulties. This was achieved by the openended questions in the questionnaire. The qualitative approach was used to provide opportunity for the learners and educators to express their unique experience by responding to open ended questions. The educators and learners expressed what they have experienced using their own words, understanding, expressions and emphasis and not what is suggested to them. The quantitative approach was used to identify the concepts in genetics and genetics related topics that the learners find more difficult and to ascertain which of the causes identified by other researchers in other countries are true to the South African context. The educators and learners responded to multiple choice and scaled questionnaire which is structured. In this study the sample was made of schools, educators and learners that were willing to participate. To study the population divisions as former model C and previously disadvantaged schools stratified sampling was used. Since both quantitative and qualitative data was obtained, data analysis was carried out both quantitatively and qualitatively. Frequency statistics and categories were developed from the data. Out of the four hundred and one (401) learners, twenty-five percent (25%) indicated that they found genetics topics difficult and very difficult. It was observed that the percentage was higher by six percent (6%) in previously disadvantaged schools. Twentytwo percent (22%) of the 198 learners from former Model C and twenty-eight (28%) of the 203 learners from previously disadvantaged schools found genetics topics difficult and very difficult. Dihybrid crosses was rated by the educators as the most difficult topic to teach followed by Inheritance and variation, Monohybrid crosses and Importance of the cradle of humankind. Intrinsic causes based on the nature of genetics that were listed by the learners include the abstractness of the topic, and unique terminology. Extrinsic causes named included poor study habits, inappropriate teaching methods and shortage of textbooks. The following are the solutions that were listed to address the causes of learning difficulties of genetics experienced by learners and educators: implementation of new teaching strategies, genetics to be allocated more time for teaching and learning and for revision and reducing the content of the genetics syllabus. The findings of this study necessitates that there be adjustments in the way the Life Sciences textbooks are written, the teaching methods used in the classroom and the resources in terms of teaching aids. It further postulates that the grade 12 National School Certificate Life Sciences results will improve significantly when the causes to difficulties in teaching and learning genetics and genetics related topics are resolved.M. South Africa's obligation to prevent, suppress and punish grave breaches of humanitarian law

    Get PDF
This study examines South Africa’s legal obligations to prevent, suppress and punish grave breaches of international humanitarian law (IHL). Whereas South Africa signed, ratified, and domesticated instruments that seek to end impunity for serious international crimes committed during armed conflicts, and whereas it is bound by customary IHL to act against perpetrators of grave breaches, it finds itself torn between its conflicting obligations to show solidarity with its counterparts in the African Union and the international community. Its failure, or refusal at best, to arrest, detain and surrender the former Sudanese strongman, Omar Al Bashir, to the International Criminal Court, and its aborted attempt to withdraw from the Roman Statute of the International Criminal Court illustrate its unwillingness to exercise universal jurisdiction for grave breaches of IHL. In the light of these events, this study explores the substantive content of South Africa’s international obligations against perpetrators of grave breaches of IHL within its borders and outside its boundaries. The study unpacks the challenges faced by South Africa in meeting these international obligations. To do so, it examines the international legal framework and domestic legislation on this aspect, as provided in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, defence law and statutes implementing the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. The study concludes by proffering recommendations to enhance South Africa’s fulfilment of its international obligations to end impunity for serious violations of IHL by repressing, suppressing and punishing grave breaches.LL.M.Public, Constitutional, and International La
