Assessment of wind power potential as a renewable energy source in Western Cape, South Africa

    No full text
The worldwide utilisation of renewable energy in electric power systems is growing rapidly due to concerns about the environment and the depletion of the sources of conventional power generation. The Weibull distribution is a widely used distribution, especially for modelling the random variable of the wind speed. In this respect, the authors present a comparative analysis of a number of methods used for estimating Weibull parameters. Results for a real – word database, are presented in a case study format. The techniques require historical Wind speed data, collected over a particular time interval, to establish the parameters of wind speed distribution for a specific location, namely Cape Town, South Africa. As can be observed, the scale and shape parameters, from the whole database and from seasonal values, have the best estimation in case of maximum likelihood (MLE). Thus, it can be summarised that the maximum likelihood (MLE) is the best method used to estimate the parameters for the two-parameter Weibull distributions taking into consideration the mean bias error (MBE) and the root mean squares error (RMSE) as measurements of comparison, while the maximum likelihood (MLE) method is the least accurate method.M.Tech (Engineering Electrical)Electrical and Mining Engineerin

An evaluation of the activities of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police in crime prevention : a study in Tembisa, Gauteng Province, South Africa

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the activities of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police in crime prevention within the area of Tembisa. This study identified current activities that the EMPD embarked on to prevent crime. Secondly, it determined the challenges confronting the Ekurhuleni Metro Police in crime prevention activities. Finally, the researcher provided recommendations based on the challenges represented in the findings. The researcher conducted 30 one-on-one interviews and observed members of the EMPD conducting their duties for a period of thirty days. Crime prevention is not viewed as a single entity function, from this standpoint; the researcher included the SAPS and CPF as institutions that collaborate with the EMPD. Findings revealed that several challenges confronted the EMPD to effectively and efficiently carry out its crime prevention function. This study recommends that policies that inform crime prevention activities from a municipal standpoint need to be reviewed in conjunction with efforts from the government to reduce the challenges that confront the EMPD.M.A. (Criminology)Criminology and Security Scienc

School safety committee members’ experiences of participative leadership in addressing xenophobic violence against foreign learners in public high schools

The purpose of this study was to explore school safety committee members’ experiences of participative leadership in addressing xenophobic violence against foreign learners in three public high schools in Johannesburg, South Africa. Xenophobic violence continues to be a plague in diverse school environments in South Africa. Educational legislation in South Africa mandates all public high schools to elect a school safety committee. This committee includes relevant stakeholders, who are prescribed by policy to work collaboratively in the management of xenophobic violence. The purpose of this study was to generate empirical information for relevant stakeholders on how they can use effective leadership strategies in order to curb xenophobic violence. Empirically, the study was guided through a combination of the Transformational leadership and Freeman Stakeholder (1984) theoretical lens. The researcher used a qualitative, transcendental, phenomenological case study research design, and data were collected using in-depth interviews and document analysis. The analysis of the data generated revealed that xenophobic violence was not a challenge in one high school, and the participative leadership approach encouraged stakeholder participation. Overall, the research concluded that school principals in the schools that exhibited xenophobic violence were not using the participative leadership approach and that there was a lack of collaborative governance in the sampled schools. Findings of the study further illuminated the dire need for members of the school safety committee to be capacitated to manage xenophobic violence in public high schools.Ph. D. Translating the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa into the official indigenous languages : a review with reference to the Tshivenda version

    No full text
Includes summaries in English and VendaThe Constitution of the Republic of South Africa is the supreme law of South Africa. It provides the legal foundation for the existence of the Republic and outlines the rights and duties of all citizens. The study identified and reviewed the translation strategies used by translators in the translation of the English version of the constitution into the Tshivenḓa version. The study used a mixed methods approach, that is, qualitative and quantitative. Taking into consideration that the study is exploratory in nature, the chosen method for data collection was a self-administered questionnaire. Data obtained from the questionnaires served as inputs to MS Excel Office 2016 and validated Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 26. The study was based on two theoretical approaches, i.e. the Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) and Corpus-based Translation Studies (CTS). The software tool used to analyse the English-Tshivenḓa Parallel Corpus is ParaConcU Version 269. Dictionaries and terminology lists were used to cross-reference the meaning of the terms that were extracted from the English-Tshivenḓa Parallel Corpus. The study revealed that the translators relied much on translating by paraphrasing and using loan words. Although they tried to use other strategies, they did not use them successfully. The target text is full of inconsistent usages of terminology, which affects the rendering of the source text messages. Readers of the Tshivenḓa version of the Constitution encounter difficulties due to a lack of similarity, language errors, a lack of terminology, poor editing, and inconsistency. In addition, the Tshivenḓa version of the Constitution is not easily accessible. The study further revealed that many African language translators lacked training to the extent that they struggled with scientific or specialised terminology. Resources were also minimal or non-existent in some African languages leading to some translations being incomprehensible. The study contributes to the legal, translation and interpretation fields in many ways. It helps language practitioners, including translators, interpreters, terminologists, etc., in executing their duties. It is valuable to the Vhavenḓa citizens towards enhancing their understanding of their constitutional rights.Ndayotewa ya Riphabuḽiki ya Afrika Tshipembe ndi mulayo muhulwanesa wa Afrika Tshipembe. Get set...get ready...get reading! A study of ecological psychological factors explaining low reading comprehension of English as a second language

    No full text
It is important to understand reading anxiety because it affects learning negatively and if it is not resolved in early childhood, reading anxiety continues to compromise academic pursuits and limits children’s futures. The present research project had several aims, (a) to establish the impact of ecological and psychological factors on reading anxiety, , (b) if an impact is established, to identify the independent variables (IVs) that have strong effect on the dependent variable (DV), reading anxiety, (c) to establish the potential differences in reading anxiety outcomes between boys and girls, (d) to establish whether gender has a moderating effect on the relationship between IVs and the DV, and (e) to establish whether home language played a role in reading anxiety outcomes between English First Language Learners (EFLs) and English Second Language Learners (ESLs), across the three language groups, English, Nguni, and Sotho-Tswana. Participants consisted of 76 grade four learners, boys, and girls, in quintile level five schools, who spoke English, Nguni and Sotho-Tswana languages. Convenient sampling method was applied to identify schools for participation. Three primary schools participated, and the data were collected using a paper-pen method/ questionnaires, and analysed in four phases, descriptive statistics, hypotheses testing, multiple regression as well as additional analysis using Models of Mediation and Moderation. Findings revealed that psychological factors play a significant role in explaining reading anxiety, but not ecological factors. More specifically, variables reading time frequency, reading attitude, and reading self-concept strongly predict reading anxiety. However, neither language nor gender appeared to influence the relationships among these variables.M.A. (Psychology)Psycholog

Ukuhlolwa kokudlwengulwa okungabikwanga Esifundeni Sasemaphandleni eLupane, eZimbabwe

The study explores unreported incidents of rape among women in the Lupane rural district area in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe. The inherently inductive qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and narrative design steered the study. The problem is that cultural norms in Lupane rural district seem to empower men to the extent of societal acceptance of sexual abuse of women in several manners. The question is, what prevents these women from coming forward to report rape, not only to the police but also to receive any other help. In this study, qualitative, rich data was collected from a purposively selected target of resettlement villages that consisted of villagers and their village heads using convenience sampling. Purposive sampling was also used to choose NGOs registered as service organisations. Narrative unstructured face-to-face interviews were used to gather information in the participants’ village environment or working environments where suitable. Bracketing was applied to mitigate the possibly damaging effects of biases that may flaw the research process. Data analysis comprised of analysing data for stories in the Ndebele language, retelling stories and, chronologically developing themes. QSR Nvivo 9 data management software was used to analyse data, and this technique was founded upon three levels of meaning. In the study findings, five themes and subthemes emerged as barriers to unreported rape, recorded as social and cultural factors, societal and structural factors, psychosocial factors, economic factors, and awareness factors. A narrative study does not lend itself to recommendations; it will be impertinent to the culture; therefore, new conversations were initiated based on the five themes. The conversations inspire culturally sensitive awareness and improve reporting of rape cases by women.Isifundo lesi sihlolisisa izehlakalo ezingabikwa zokubhinywa kwabesifazane endaweni yaseLupane esemaphandleni eMatabeleland North, eZimbabwe. No keywords provided. The general aim of this study was to determine the extent that alternatives to corporal punishment can be used in the management of school discipline in secondary Schools in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria. Methodologically, purposive sampling is also known as judgmental, selective or intentional sampling. Stratified random sampling was used to sample the selected secondary schools while purposive sampling was used to select the principals and teachers assigned by the principal to be in charge of the administration of corporal punishment in senior secondary schools in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria. The research is qualitative in nature. Therefore, an open-ended interviews strategy was employed to collect the data. A thematic analysis method was used to analyse the data. The study reached a number of conclusions and made several recommendations. Conclusively, the study revealed that secondary school teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria disagree with the introduction of an alternative to corporal punishment to maintaining discipline in secondary schools in Oyo State Nigeria. Maintenance has been posing a serious problem, students are very difficult to control (uncontrollable); no more respect for the teachers. In the light of the findings of this study, the following recommendations were suggested: Government should provide an alternative to corporal punishment in schools after the pronouncement of the abolishment of corporal punishment in schools. Government should organise training workshops and seminars for the teachers and the school heads (principals) on the alternative to corporal punishment to arrest indiscipline in secondary schools.D.
