Financial access and value added in Sub-Saharan Africa: Empirical evidence from the agricultural manufacturing and service sectors

    Get PDF
This research assesses the importance of financial access on value added in three economic sectors in 25 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa using data for the period 1980-2014. The empirical evidence is based on the Generalised Method of Moments. Financial access is measured with private domestic credit, while the three outcome variables are: value added in the agricultural, manufacturing, and service sectors, respectively. Enhancing financial access does not significantly improve value added in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors, while enhancing financial access improves value added in the service sector. An extended analysis shows that in order for the positive net incidence of enhancing credit access on value added to the service sector to be maintained, complementary policies are required when domestic credit to the private sector is between 77.50% and 98.50% of GDP. Policy implications are discussed.Colleges of Economic and Management Science

Trauma, narrative and ethics in J.M. Coetzee’s selected fiction

The traumatic encounter in J.M. Coetzee’s representation of colonialism is shown to facilitate the ethical evolvement of his protagonists. However, in order for characters to attain ethical salvation, it is necessary that they come into proximity with the Other. In narratives that deconstruct colonial discourses, Coetzee attempts to expose the workings of myth both in the enactment and sustenance of the colonial project to show that myth is coextensive with violence in colonialism and that violence is a concomitant of colonialism. In anti-realist narratives that represent human and animal Other, it is shown that the citation of an alleged quietism in Coetzee’s narratives fails to take into account his scrupulous ethical stance against suffering and oppression and that he contests authority by foregrounding alterity. Hence his refusal to publicly express his political views is problematised.Consequently, his hospitality settings suggest a postcolonial ethics based on interrogating language. Provincial support for municipal financial management in the Limpopo Province

    Get PDF
This study is investigating the relationship between the Limpopo Provincial Treasury (LPT) and municipalities in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The nature of the relationship is referred to as municipal financial intergovernmental relations. Municipal financial intergovernmental relations are in the main provincial-local relations. The key actors in municipal financial relations are the provincial treasuries and municipalities. Municipal financial intergovernmental relations were and continue to be mired by controversy. Non-compliance with legislation and underperformance characterised municipal financial management. The Auditor-General South Africa (AGSA) and National Treasury (NT) decried the state of municipal financial management. This scenario was applicable to municipalities in Limpopo Province, hence the study adopted the following problem statement: Are provincial governments in South Africa fulfilling their mandate to assist municipalities to maintain sound financial management? The purpose of this study was to determine whether the LPT fulfilled its mandate to assist municipalities to maintain sound financial management. The main research objectives of the study are: ‘to explore structural functionalism as a theoretical lens for this study’ and ‘to examine the policy framework for municipal financial intergovernmental relations. This is a retrospective longitudinal study conducted in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The LPT was selected using purposive sampling as the unit of analysis. Monitoring and support were identified as the units of observation. The data were collected from public records and journal articles. Narrative texts and tables were used to present the data. Documentary analysis was used to appraise and analyse the collected data. The main findings for this study are that the LPT was monitoring and supporting municipal financial management. In addition, the study found that evaluation existed only in name. Despite these findings, non-compliance and underperformance were incessant. This study concluded that the LPT fulfilled its mandate to assist municipalities to maintain sound financial management.D. Phil. (Public Administration)Public Administration and Managemen

Women, churches and community development in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

    Get PDF
This study examined the contribution that women in churches make towards community development. The concept of development of the community by the community has gained prominence in development literature. In addition, churches as institutions that exist within communities have been recognised as most appropriate in steering community development initiatives. However, the role of churches has not been significantly researched or socio-scientifically analysed. The efforts of women in churches towards community development have not been sufficiently recognised and researched either. Women dominate in terms of church membership, and they are actively involved in church activities. This study sought to understand the contribution that women in churches make to community development and to expose barriers that hinder their full participation. Contemporary research has proven that meaningful community development cannot be achieved without the active participation of women. This thesis contributes to the body of knowledge by recognising women as an important nexus in community development and by providing a detailed perspective of their role in churches and the obstacles that hamper their meaningful participation in community development. The spiritual contribution of women in churches to community development is scarcely documented and has largely been undermined – as evidenced by the scarcity of research on how spirituality could be integrated into community development. Therefore, this study provides insight into the importance of spirituality in community development, with special reference to women in churches. The study unveils and acknowledges the significance that the voluntary, non-paid activities of women in churches have for community development. This qualitative research study was guided by the GAD theory and has followed a constructivist epistemological stance. A case study research design was adopted to explore the intersection of women, churches, and community development. Thematic data analysis was the data analysis method adopted for this research and the sample size was 58. The key findings of this study have indicated that women in churches are mainly affected by a patriarchal system that prevents them from participating meaningfully in community development initiatives. The patriarchal structures within churches are maintained through incompatible doctrines. Thus, there is a need for transformation of church leadership and decision-making structures. Lolu cwaningo luhlole igalelo elenziwa abesifazane emasontweni ekuthuthukiseni umphakathi. A penological study of the role of nongovernmental Organisations in the Rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders

    Get PDF
Text in EnglishThe usage of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in criminal justice can help to alleviate the problem of overburdening professionals like parole officials and probation officers. They can also help with a task that requires a high level of professional knowledge and competence in order to reduce the demands on professional people's time. Department of Correctional Services must acknowledge the significant impact that an outside role player can make. The Department of Correctional Services must improve its capacities and rely on non-governmental entities to provide services due to its limited size. Several nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) in South Africa work both inside and outside of correctional institutions with convicts, ex-offenders, and their families. The researcher discusses the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders in South Africa and foreign correctional systems in three countries: Canada, the United States of America, and Namibia. In the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into penal systems, each country makes use of external role actors such as NGOs. Several correctional institutions rely on non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to support personnel in various programs for offender rehabilitation and reintegration. The fact that the South African Department of Correctional Services does not place a strong emphasis on aspects such as reintegration to work, and that Non-Governmental Organizations play a decisive role in such matters, necessitated research into the role of non-governmental organizations in the criminal justice system. Effective reintegration programs are time-consuming, expensive, and require skilled personnel. The White Paper on Corrections and the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998 do not provide rules that educate policies that control the role of non-governmental organizations in rehabilitation programs so that all NGOs are aware of their responsibilities. Its open-door strategy does not help it gain additional funding from nongovernmental organizations. There is no provision for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with professional skills and their functions in the Department of Correctional Services, the professional society for NGOs in criminal justice, and so on. This study involved an extensive literature review that looked at the role of NGOs in the criminal justice system on a global and national level, as well as standards for the treatment of criminals and a variety of rehabilitation programs offered by NGOs.Ph.D. (Corrections Management)Corrections Managemen

Health and social development innovation guidance framework: harnessing progressively positive responsiveness optimation potential among youth and their parents, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Whereas intricately interlaced on one another like the “two sides of a coin”, Health and Social Development dimension remains less focused upon as the society‟s principal priority traction. The overwhelming emphasis has rather been on the disorders, risks, resilience, and services provision pathways. This Thesis has endeavoured to address Health and Social Development Innovation Guidance Framework: Harnessing Progressively Positive Responsiveness Optimisation Potential among Youth and Their Parents in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2017 & 2018; principally expressed with what was coined as the “Minimal Bedrock Core Building – Block Attributes Continuum Set”; and the “Health and Social Development Optimisation Prototype Model Innovation Guidance Framework”. Clearance to the ethical and technical soundness was obtained from the University of South Africa and the Ethical Board of the Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau. On top of the integrative, expansive conceptual and theoretical digest and eventually followed with the systematic capitalisation, constellation, and advancement of the Meta–Theoretical trajectory, the study has soundly implemented the Mixed – Methods and Multi – Methods abductive approach. Reasonably adequate sample size estimates were ensured in all cases. Both the probabilistic and non probabilistic sampling techniques were employed upon appropriate justification and specific indication. The triangulated primary data set was gathered using the systematic blends of the structured closed - and open-guided modules mixture. The entire Study Team, procedures, and modules were subjected to the pretesting and revision exercises on two rounds. Appropriate statistical and non-statistical computer software packages were employed during the expansive analyses process. Based upon the triangulated set of evidences, studying the complex phenomenon of harnessing progressively positive health and social development responsiveness optimisation potential among the youth and their parents was found not only practicable and acceptable, but also critically important. The findings across the set of segments have, in clear terms, revealed that there were considerable variations between the youth and their parents. Rich enough insights and perspectives were generated. Ranges of factors were incriminated. Health and social development responsiveness optimisation should warrant maximised preoccupation. Consideration of systematically aligned, multi-faceted, multi-level, and streamlined optimisation measures, including the judiciously custom-made prototype model innovation guidance framework is recommended.D. A longitudinal study of the efficacy of the Cellfield reading intervention in a South African context

    Get PDF
Internationally, including in South Africa, many children do not acquire ageappropriate reading skills in the suggested timeframe. As a result, many children are at-risk of not achieving academic success, since reading does not develop into an efficient tool that allows children to read for meaning. Various theories have been developed to explain why some children struggle to develop reading skills. These theories form the foundation of interventions to assist struggling readers. The Cellfield intervention is based on the multi-deficit theory of reading difficulties, and as such, addresses several foundation reading skills simultaneously. Existing research has confirmed that the Cellfield intervention leads to improvement in reading skill directly following the intervention, but no research exists to determine the long-term efficacy of the Cellfield intervention. The broad aim of this study was to determine the long-term efficacy of the Cellfield intervention in a group of South African learners (n = 41) whose reading was below age-appropriate level. Using a quasi-experimental design, participants were assessed before and after the Cellfield intervention which was typically conducted over a two to three-week period, and then again, a minimum of one year following the intervention. Using standardised reading tests (the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test and by the Gray Oral Reading Test), six reading variables were measured, including Word Identification, Word Attack, Comprehension, Reading Rate, Reading Fluency and Passage Comprehension. Additionally, the results obtained from the treatment group were compared to a control group (n =11) who had also been found to be behind in reading, but who did not undergo the Cellfield intervention. Statistical analyses of the findings revealed that the Cellfield intervention had a statistically significant effect on reading skills and that these improvements were maintained in the long-term. Furthermore, the results suggested that the change in reading skill in the treatment group were steeper, compared to the control group.M.A. (Linguistics)Linguistics and Modern Language

The impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on employment in Nigeria (1970 -2018)

    Get PDF
Abstracts in English and SothoThe purpose of this study is to determine the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows on employment in Nigeria from 1970 to 2018. Globalization has encouraged FDI flows, and this has enhanced economic growth and employment growth in many countries. Nigeria is endowed with natural resources and is therefore able to attract foreign investors, thus creating employment opportunities, however, the country has not been able to attract and sustain consistently high FDI inflows nor has the country been able to grapple with its persistent high unemployment. To assess the research problem, three objectives were set. First, to provide a comprehensive explanation of the trend of FDI into and employment in Nigeria between 1970 and 2018, second to empirically investigate the relationship between FDI and employment; and third, to provide policy recommendations based on the findings of the study. The study therefore adopts the Vector Autoregression and Vector Error Correction model (VAR/VECM) estimation techniques to determine the long-run and short-run impact of the FDI inflows on employment in Nigeria. The results confirm that FDI is positively related to employment in Nigeria. Therefore, this study recommends that the Nigerian government should increase its focus on attracting FDI inflows to contribute to the reduction of the rate of unemployment in the country. Policy measures for macroeconomic stability, to improve security, enhance political stability and infrastructure development should be undertaken simultaneously, both to encourage new FDI investments and to retain the current investors in the country.Sepheo sa phuputso ena ke ho fumana tshusumetso ya matsete a tswang dinaheng tse kantle (FDI) a kenang mosebetsing Nigeria ho tloha 1970 ho isa ho 2018. Retention enablers and impeders of senior female employees within a South African financial services organisation

    No full text
Includes summary in Afrikaans and isiZuluRetention is one of the critical concerns at the forefront of organisations. A comprehensive retention strategy should result in decreased employee turnover rates, consequently reducing company costs and increasing both revenue and profitability, while simultaneously ensuring increased work morale and employee productivity. The current study explores objective and subjective factors that enable or impede the retention of women within a South African financial services organisation. Here, a qualitative approach was assumed to obtain semi-structured interview data from senior female employees within the chosen organisation. The qualitative Atlas.ti data analysis program assisted in inductively eliciting three higher-order themes: (1) senior female employees’ employment experiences within the organisation; (2) the objective and subjective factors that enable the retention of senior female employees; and (3) the objective and subjective factors that impede the retention of senior female employees. Organisations may utilise this knowledge and understanding of the impeding and enabling factors that influence the retention of senior female employees as a means to contribute to organisational practices pertaining to the retention of valuable female staff members, particularly within a South African financial industry context. Ukugcinwa kwabasebenzi kungenye yezinto ezibalulekile ezihlala zihamba phambili ezinhlanganweni.
