Demonology, eschatology and vaccinology in African independent Pentecostalism
Public discourses on the reliability of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines in
dealing with the upsurge of virus cases and deaths are developing and ongoing in many
different contexts, as countries around the world are doing their best to build high and
lasting immunity. This article worked within the framework of Pentecostal faith and outlined
the Pentecostal perspectives on COVID-19 vaccines. The article is a literature analysis on the
eschatological view and the demonising of COVID-19 vaccines. In addition, the article
analysed the social media utterances of Pentecostal pastors on COVID-19 vaccines. These
utterances were obtained from different social media networks, including YouTube.
Pentecostal faith has caused some independent Pentecostals in Africa to demonise COVID-19
vaccines and others to perceive them as signs of the end times. While these perceptions
appeared as signs of faith in dealing with pandemics such as COVID-19, they have proven
fruitless in some instances. Some Pentecostals in Africa have lost their lives due to their
insistence on faith, instead of vaccinating against the virus and observing regulations and
restrictions. This calls for scholars to revisit a Pentecostal faith in health issues by bringing
the balance between works and faith.Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiolog
An assessment of the investigation of corruption cases in the Eastern Cape Buffalo City municipality
Corruption has become endemic in South Africa. The purpose of this study was to assess the investigation of corruption cases in the Eastern Cape Province. The province is considered as the poorest and most disadvantaged of the provinces of South Africa. As the country is faced with economic decay, corruption is becoming rife and undermining the efforts to improve service delivery. Eastern Cape community is losing hope for better future as services are not rendered to the society due to corrupt activities.
This study was conducted to explore whether the investigative methods used in corruption are effective. The researcher intended to determine if there are any challenges in investigating corruption cases and to ascertain the impact of investigation in the fight against corruption. Data was collected by semi-structured interviews with the members of South African Police Service and Special investigation Unit tasked with investigation of corruption cases. Data was also collaborated with evidence from literature studies in relation to corruption and its investigation. The findings indicated that the process is effective but some gaps and challenges were identified. The researcher concluded that the process of investigating corruption cases needs to be regularly evaluated and changes implemented as circumstances require.M.A. (Forensic Science and Technology)Criminology and Security Scienc
Exploration of school governing bodies’ legal mandates : the case of Mopani district in Limpopo province
Schools in Mopani District are governed by School Governing Bodies that are incapable of performing fiduciary responsibilities. They cannot interpret and implement school policies in their respective schools. Fiduciary duty is a legal concept describing the relationship between two parties that obligates one to act solely in the interest of the other. Most parents are illiterate preventing them from effectively participating in SGB meetings. In most cases, it appears that the views of the principals are considered final decisions because they have the necessary special skills. They dominate in the SGB meetings during discussions. Many studies have been conducted on SGBs and their functionality, however, I have not found any that sought to address my research question. Therefore, it is for this reason that this qualitative case study aims to explore the legal mandates of the SGBs in the Mopani District regarding policy interpretation and implementation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with focus groups. Four rural primary schools from different Circuits in Mopani District were purposefully sampled. In the first two primary schools, the Principal, the SGB chairperson, and the educator who represents educators in the SGB from each school were purposefully sampled for semi-structured interviews. The focus group interviews which consisted of six members from each school, the Principal, the SGB chairperson, an educator serving in the SGB, and three additional members of the SGB were conducted in the last two primary schools. Document analysis from four sampled primary schools was also conducted. Based on the findings, the following recommendations are suggested: co-opting retired education practitioners to serve in the SGBs. To come up with a clear programme or schedule of SGB training and workshops. Assessing the level of understanding of SGB members at the end of the training and workshops. Recruiting experts on school governance bodies for capacitating the SGB members.M. Ed. (Education Management)Educational Leadership and Managemen
Exploring the social reintegration experiences of former female offenders who committed fraud: A case of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality
Most female offender studies focus on the causes of economic crimes and the experience of female offenders during their incarceration. This has resulted in a literature gap regarding female offenders and their experiences after incarceration. This study aimed to explore the social reintegration experiences of former female offenders who committed fraud. A qualitative research methodology was employed, and semi-structured interviews were used to gather information. Former female offenders who had completed their sentencing formed part of the sample. The study was based on labelling and convenience theories and the data were analysed through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The results of the study indicated that stigma, unemployment, anxiety, as well as broken relationships were the main challenges that former female offenders faced during their reintegration into society. The results also revealed that post-incarceration support was not offered by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) during the social reintegration of the released former female offenders. Furthermore, former female offenders needed counselling and employment opportunities for their successful reintegration into society. Therefore, the study recommends counselling services to deal with the stigma, unemployment, and broken relationships encountered by former female offenders, and to provide gendered social reintegration programmes.

Residual effects of soil applied atrazine on follow-up bioassay vegetable crop in selected South African soils
Abstracts and keywords in English, Sepedi and ZuluThe residual effect of Atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-isopropylamino)-s-triazine]
has emerged as a concern because of the possibility of carryover. A study was
conducted at the Florida campus of the University of South Africa (Unisa) to determine
the residual effect of atrazine on follow-up bioassay vegetable crops. Potato cultivar
(Moonlight) as a bioassay crop was grown separately in three soils (Sandy, Clay loam
and Sandy loam soil) with four atrazine rates (0.0. 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mg/l) applied in each
pot. The experiment was laid out as a Randomised Complete Block Design with three
(3) replicates based on a fully automated greenhouse. Sandy loam soil increased plant
height, number of leaves, dry weight and tuber number all at an application rate of 0.3
mg/l in comparison with Sandy and Clay loam soils. Sandy soil reduced fresh tuber
weight at an application rate of 0.2 mg/l. An increase in the growth of potato parameters
was caused by an increase in the application rate. The residual effect of atrazine was
found to delay emergence of potatoes on Clay loam soil. Sandy loam soil proved to
have performed better than Sandy and Clay loam soil for the growth of potatoes. The
findings implied that the herbicides showed a reduction in efficacy as regards the
emergence and growth of potato plants.Seabe sa mašaledi a Atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-isopropylamino)-s-triazine] se

Incarcerated students’ experiences of UNISA’s Open Distance e-Learning at one Medium Correctional Centre
Technology mediated pedagogies of the 21st century present new and unprecedented challenges for incarcerated tertiary students. The researchers, employing a qualitative exploratory research design, sought to explore the learning experiences of UNISA students incarcerated at Baviaanspoort Medium Correctional Centre. Six participants were sampled purposively and recruited to participate during a focus group interview. Qualitative content analysis revealed the
ever-changing landscape of higher education due to the advent of digitised e-learning; the unique challenges encountered by incarcerated students studying at tertiary level; strategies for overcoming barriers associated with ODeL; and that lastly, in the context of imprisonment, student centeredness is still primarily informed by a constructivist approach to ODL. The study concluded that students’ learning experiences, and by extension, academic success, can be enhanced
provided learner support is augmented for incarcerated tertiary students.PsychologyThe study did not receive any funding
Evaluating service quality for postgraduate students at selected academic libraries in South Africa
The documented value of quality in selected libraries of highr learning institutions in South
Africa shows the need to improve service quality for postgraduate students. Libraries in
higher learning institutions has an important role of ensuring quality service provision to
their clientele to improve user satisfaction. The research project aimed to evaluate service
quality for postgraduate students in selected university libraries in South Africa. The
research was placed under the post-positivism paradigm and adopted quantitative and
qualitative approaches. Data collection for primary data adopted questionnaires from
master's, doctoral students and interviews from subject librarians, who constituted the
target population from five (5) public universities in South Africa. Quantitative data
collection targeted 500 participants from five (5) participating academic libraries, and 50%
(250) of the sample responded. The collection of qualitative data targeted five (5) subject
librarians, but only three (3) participated in the study. Content analysis was also used for
the secondary data, which included policy documents of the academic libraries to regulate
the ways for ensuring service quality provision. Numerical data were analyzed using
descriptive statistics, and the qualitative data was thematically analyzed. The results
revealed that all participated academic libraries in South Africa provide the same services,
where online information resources are concerned, by using modern technology to
enhance service provision, which also accommodates the off-campus communities. The
results also showed that academic libraries provide training services on accessing and
using library services to postgraduate students in South Africa. The challenges with
service provision by academic libraries in South Africa are that these libraries depend on
overseas standards to guide service quality, while South Africa is still behind in
infrastructure compared to overseas academic libraries. Access to electronic information
resources was considered a challenge because participants felt that they not user friendly. Therefore, access to electronic resources should be made user-friendly. The
results also revealed that evaluated academic libraries in South Africa do not have service
charter and only rely on the mission and vision of their mother institutions. Hence, the
study recommended the provision of a service charter for academic libraries in South
Africa. A framework for user satisfaction guided this study. The study adopted Krejcie and
Morgan sampling model. The study concludes that while it can be said that academic libraries are trying to maintain service quality, however, there is still room for
improvement. The study also recommends the client profile framework for postgraduate
students.Ph. D. (Information Science)Information Scienc

PODCASTING THROUGH THE PANDEMIC: STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS AND PERFORMANCE AT AN ODL INSTITUTION
The pandemic has prompted the use of supplemental learning tools such as podcasts to become increasingly used to bridge the gap between lecturers and students. This paper argues that podcasting not only sharpens students’ listening skills but also enables them to engage with content more efficiently. This paper is underpinned by the transactional distance theory and the community of inquiry theory to understand the role of podcasting in teaching and learning in distance education. In an attempt to decrease transactional distance, this case study evaluates students’ perceptions of the implementation of podcasts in one South African ODL university, as an example, and investigates the effectiveness of using podcasts as a supplemental teaching tool in an English language module. The findings suggest that supplemental learning does decrease the transactional distance between lecturers-students and students-content. Moreover, the study found that podcasts tend to foster a teaching, social and cognitive presence that forms a community of inquiry. This paper concludes by providing pedagogical recommendations for teacher and student development in distance education contexts.English Studie
