Imibono yabafundi abadala kanye nabafundi beziqu ezifundweni zokuqedwa kobukoloni kwekharikhulamu yenyuvesi eNingizimu Afrika
The dominance of Western hegemony in higher education curricula has resulted in debates both locally and globally about possible means to redress the injustices associated with Eurocentric worldviews in higher education research, teaching and learning. The decolonisation agenda has thus become topical in postcolonial university contexts and other higher education institutions across the world, driven by lack of equity of access and success amongst most indigenous students and other marginalised students. Decolonisation debates have also influenced the attempts to decolonise university curricula in most postcolonial universities worldwide. Using literature review, document analysis, semi-structured individual telephonic interviews and an online qualitative questionnaire, this interpretive phenomenological qualitative intrinsic case study explored perceptions of senior academics and postgraduate students on the decolonisation of the university curriculum at an Open Distance eLearning (ODeL) institution in South Africa, the University of South Africa (UNISA). Derrick Bell’s interest convergence principle and Ladson-Billings and Tate’s critical race theory (CRT) of education were used as theoretical lenses to inform the study and frame the analysis. A purposeful, snowballing sample of sixteen senior academics and twelve postgraduate students was selected. A document analysis included UNISA’s key policy documents: Integrated Transformation Strategy; UNISA 2030 Strategy; Vision and Mission Statement; 2018 and 2019 Integrated Annual Report; 2016 Language Policy; ODeL Policy; and Student Funding Policy. The results revealed UNISA aimed at decolonising its curriculum through centring African epistemologies and other marginalised knowledges. The results further revealed that this has been partly achieved through the implementation of indigenous African languages to scaffold learning, drafting of policies to guide the decolonisation agenda, monitoring the implementation process, renaming university buildings and using technology to enhance equity and access. The results further revealed that postgraduate students are unaware of the decolonisation agenda which is implemented in this ODeL institution. The study recommends that indigenous official languages be used as media of instruction at a qualification level. It is further recommended that funds be availed for the successful implementation of decolonised curricula. Lastly, the institution should find creative ways of ensuring that its postgraduate students are aware of the transformation development.Ukubusa kombuso waseNtshonalanga kukharikhulamu yemfundo ephakeme kuye kwaphetha ngokuba ezingxoxweni, endaweni kanye nasemhlabeni wonke, mayelana nezindlela ezingaba khona zokulungisa ukungabi nabulungisa okuhlobene nemibono yomhlaba yeYurosentrikhi ocwaningweni lwemfundo ephakeme, ukufundisa kanye nokufunda. Effect of real exchange rates on fruit exports in South Africa : a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) approach
A country’s exports occupy an important position in determining the state of national accounts. Thus, stable performance of the export sector is important for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth. In order to increase economic growth, export development is a critical avenue to pursue. The study examined the effect of real exchange rates (RER) on fruit exports in South Africa and determined the direction of causality between fruit exports and exchange rate changes. South African fruit producers competes fiercely in both the domestic and export markets. The study was correlational, intended to decipher the relationship between export performance and the various variables that influence it.The forty-eight (48) year period from 1971 to 2019 was chosen for econometric analysis because it contained the most complete data when all data sources were combined, and the 48 years period was appropriate for statistical/econometric analysis. The Granger Causality test was discussed and reviewed in light of the literature, as well as various factors affecting the study's level of validity and reliability. Long run OLS regression analysis revealed that a weakening exchange rate has a positive effect on both export values and quantities. The signs of inflation,TOT, and GFCF (as control variables) coefficients were also consistent with their a priori expectations. Numerous preliminary and descriptive tests were conducted to ascertain the data table's meaning and to determine the most appropriate statistical approach. The unit root and cointegration tests indicated that the data were integrated with order 1, in addition to the long OLS model, a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) was implemented. The long run OLS regression revealed that a weakening exchange rate have positive effect on both export values and quantities. The study discovered that government spending in the form of Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) have a small but positive effect on fruit exports. thereby boosting exports by allowing the fruit to be sold at affordable prices in foreign markets. The study discovered that government spending in the form of Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) has a small but positive effect on fruit exports. As a result, the government and other stakeholders should work to enhance transportation and related infrastructure through increased public investment to streamline logistics and boost export performance.M. Inkcazelo yeendidi zohlaza ezigcinwe ngeNkqubo Yokuququzelela Uhlaza kwisiza esikwingigqi ekuMntla Mpuma Koloni, esaziwa ngokuba yiNorth-Eastern Cape Grasslands Priority Site, eMzantsi Afrika
Abstracts in English, Xhosa and ZuluA study was undertaken in the northern region of the Eastern Cape Province within the Grassland
Biome located in the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area. Vegetation surveys
were undertaken on two privately owned properties, the Glencoe Farm (~1 007 ha) and the
Reedsdell Farm (~1 158 ha). Livestock (cattle and sheep) grazing is the primary land-use activity
for both properties. The aim of this study was to determine and describe the different plant
communities, their veld condition as well as their biodiversity value for inclusion into the
biodiversity stewardship programme in the North Eastern Cape Grasslands Priority areas. The
Braun-Blanquet technique was employed for the classification and description of vegetation, the
Ecological Index Method for the veld condition assessment, and the Biodiversity Site Assessment
Tool (BSAT) developed by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) to evaluate the
biodiversity value of the two study sites. The Glencoe study site falls under the Lesotho Highlands
Basalt Grasslands vegetation type. Not only the Lesotho Highlands Basalt Grasslands vegetation
type but also the Southern Drakensberg Basalt Grasslands vegetation type are present on the
Reedsdell study site. Both areas are homogeneous and only two major plant communities were
identified for each. The veld for both study sites is in a moderate condition (49 for the Glencoe
study site and 48 for the Reedsdell study site) and dominated by the Increaser II species. Based on
the Biodiversity status results, both properties qualify for Nature Reserve protected area status in
accordance with the ECPTA’s Biodiversity Stewardship Programme assessment procedures (total
score of 32,5 for Glencoe and 35,7 for Reedsdell).Kukho isifundo esathi senziwa kwingingqi eseMntla Mpuma Koloni kummandla wohlaza ekuthiwa yiGrassland Biome okwisithili semithombo yamanzi esingakwiintaba zoKhahlamba. The role of mobile characteristics on mobile money innovations
This study focuses on linkages between bank accounts and supply-side mobile money drivers for mobile money innovations. It seeks to understand how bank accounts can be complemented with mobile subscription and mobile connectivity dynamics (i.e., mobile connectivity coverage and mobile connectivity performance) for mobile money innovations. The empirical evidence is based on quadratic Tobit regressions. First, there are positive net relationships from the roles of mobile subscriptions and mobile connectivity coverage in modulating bank accounts for mobile money innovations. Second, mobile connectivity performance does not significantly modulate bank accounts for mobile money innovations. Third, given the negative marginal relationships associated with the positive net relationships, thresholds for complementary policies in mobile money supply factors that are worthwhile for bank accounts to stimulate mobile money innovations are provided. The thresholds are: (i) mobile subscription rates of 87.50%, 80.50%, and 98.50% of the adult population for respectively, the mobile money accounts, the mobile used to send money, and the mobile used to receive money, and (ii) mobile connectivity coverages of 64.00%, 69.33%, and 78.00% for respectively, the mobile money accounts, the mobile used to send money, and the mobile used to receive money.Colleges of Economic and Management Science

The contribution of tourism to local economic development in South Africa : the case study of the Newtown Cultural Precinct in Johannesburg
Tourism is recognised as the largest and fastest growing economic sector worldwide. However, many tourism studies in South Africa and elsewhere have investigated the relationship between macro-economic development and tourism. So far, there is little or no research on the contribution of tourism to local development in South Africa. As such, this research project tried to close this gap by critically examining the contribution of tourism to local development of Johannesburg inner-city in South Africa. The main aim was to investigate the extent to which tourism in Newtown Cultural Precinct (NCP) has contributed to Local Economic Development (LED) in Johannesburg in South Africa. Therefore, the specific objectives were to assess the nature of tourism in NCP; establish the role of cultural tourism in enhancing LED; evaluate tourism regeneration and its impact on LED; and to outline the economic and social contributions of tourism in NCP in Johannesburg. The research utilised a case study of the NCP tourist site to generate literature and empirical findings. Research data was mined through a qualitative design process, within the interpretive paradigm lens. Multiple research methods such as social survey, observation and interviews were not only used to explore primary data but also to triangulate research findings. Secondary data was gathered through a literature review process. The study population consisted of 20 interviewees, of whom 5 were business owners, 5 residents, 5 tourists or visitors, and 5 were employees at NCP. The actual sample was selected through a non-probability sampling technique namely: convenience or judgemental technique. As such, only populations units with rich knowledge of the subject being studied were selected. Research data analysis was analysed using manual bi-thematic analysis process of utilising deductive and inductive approaches. This implies that both priori and posteriori codes, categories and themes were generated. Key objective empirical findings which emerged from the study are that the nature of tourism is such that it fosters socio-economic transformation of infrastructures, creates employment, contributes significantly to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), export earning, and promotes human and physical capital investment. It surfaced that the role of tourism is to tap cultural and unique potential, attract tourists, foster inclusive growth, and promote diversity. In terms of tourism regeneration and its impact on LED generated arose that tourism regeneration positively impact LED through job creation; improving the quality of life for residents; promoting economic development; balancing urban and LED; improving city image; attracting private and public investors; improving environment; and attracting new business. Then the economic and social contribution of tourism to LED conceived is such that it boosts the gross domestic product; facilitates community development; alleviates poverty; provides business opportunities; conceive inner-city leisure places – such as casinos, museums, conference centres and sports stadiums. However, there seems to be no commitment and consistency, no events and target planning, no participative engagement, no tourism marketing advertising, and no motivation is done, from government and responsible stakeholders, to effectively promote local development in the context of the poor. Efforts to eradicate these weaknesses will contribute towards fruitful LED and income generation at NCP in Johannesburg.M.A. (Development Studies)Development Studie

The transformative impact of current awareness services on promoting access and use of open access resources at the University of Zambia
The study of open access usage in higher learning institutions in developing countries has been an
area of concern over the past years due to the many opportunities it offers in academia, such as
making available and accessible scientific research freely. As such, the University of Zambia’s
library has strategically included open access resources in its collection.
Despite this effort, the use of open access resources by the University of Zambia’s students and
researchers has remained low. This study, therefore, purposed to identify and recommend
appropriate current awareness services that the University of Zambia’s library could use to
promote awareness and uptake of open access resources in the University. According to the
literature review, no study has been done on the use of current awareness services to promote open
access resource use at the University of Zambia. Further, the extent to which current awareness
services have been used to promote open resources at the University is also not known.
This study identified itself in the pragmatic paradigm and used the mixed methods approach and a
case study-mixed methods design to investigate the problem. The Unified Theory of Acceptance
and Use of Technology was used to provide the context for examining and explaining the study
findings.
Although the overall results revealed an average level of awareness and low usage of the open
access resources among students and researchers, the majority regarded open access resources as
very useful, relevant in their academic and professional work and of academic quality, hence had a
positive perception. The identified challenges associated with open access use include lack of
awareness due to inadequate marketing of open access resources, lack of effective user search
skills, poor institutional infrastructure for accessing online resources and continued use of print
materials.
The study recommends the adoption of social media platforms, email/RSS/Google alerts, UNZA
website, selective dissemination of information, WhatsApp groups, mobile phone alerts and
vendor alerts to boost awareness. Other strategies include involving all stakeholders in promoting
online resources, robust awareness programmes, enhanced training, improved Internet
infrastructure and a user mindset change.D. Phil. (Information Science)Information Scienc
Maternal and child health nursing practices in rural health centres, Ethiopia: prospects for health outcomes
The Purpose of the study to provide evidence-based suggestions for maternal and child health nursing practice guideline improvements based on in-depth investigation of existing situations, challenges, missed-opportunities, innovative ideas and best practices that could improve the maternal and child health care practices.
The method of the study applied was qualitative study design which was conducted by using phenomenological and ethnographic approaches. Totally, 42 in-depth interviews and 12 focus group discussions were conducted. Among Key informant interviews, 24 (57.1%) were female participants and 18 (42.9%) participants were male. Each focus group discussion involved 6 individual participants in which 8 Fucus Group Discussions purely involved 48 (66.7%) female participants and 4 Fucus Group Discussions purely involved 24 (33.3%) male participants in the context of twelve rural health centres in six selected districts, namely: Babile, Chalanko, Dadar, Fadis, Kersa, Meta and Gursum which are found in East Hararghe Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia. The study involved healthcare managers, community leaders, religious leaders, health officers, midwives, nurses, health extension workers (HEWs), traditional birth attendants (TBAs), volunteer health promoters and mothers, as well as family members.
Data collection instruments used were In-depth interview questions, focus group guides and observation checklists with audio recorder and camera. In qualitative research, the triangulation of these methods was advantageous for enabling participation of a broad spectrum of participants and a range of views concerning the investigated phenomenon of MCH care practices.
Data analysis was performed based on the need for triangulation in this study and its vast sample size, both inductive and deductive analytical approaches were applied to analyse and interpret the collected data from these varied categories of research subjects by using the Atlas ti Version 8.2 statistical software.
The study found out the environmental, physical, institutional, material, financial, ethical, attitudinal, perceptual, behavioural, procedural conditions and human interaction that positively or negatively affect the quality of maternal and child health care services. The study further explored major barriers, enabling factors and innovative ideas for improving maternal child health care practices based on the lessons learnt from experiences in the context of local communities.
v
The study inferred useful insights on the nature of existing maternal and child health care related issues including: the rationale, purpose, components, methods of care and practice, nature of interaction, levels of satisfaction and level of dissatisfaction.
