Feminisation of poverty among female-headed households in post-genocide Odi community in Niger-Delta region of Nigeria

    No full text
Includes summary in Afrikaans and ZuluPoverty as it concerns women is often approached in terms of the three contributing factors that have been underscored in the women-in-development and gender-and development (WID/GAD) literature: (1) the growth of female-headed households (FHHs), (2) intra-household inequalities and bias against women and girls, and (3) neoliberal economic policies, including structural adjustments and post-socialist market transitions. This study focused on female-headed households (FHHs). The aim of the study was to analyse the feminisation of poverty and the empowerment of female-heads of households and the approaches that underpin them in Odi, a post genocide community. Located within an interpretivist paradigm, this study used a qualitative research approach alongside a case study research design. The target population was FHHs in Odi community. Semi-structured interviews (face-to-face) and a focus group discussion (FGD) was used to generate data. A total of 17 participants was purposively selected to participate in the study. Unique to this study are the poverty policy guidelines that are proposed based on the findings that emanated from the study. Amongst its findings, the study established that the experiences of female heads of households who were participants in this study did not cloud their sense of who they are and the impact that the environment has on their welfare and well-being. To this end, they needed no one to tell them that they are poor and in light of that, showed no anger when they stated that poverty has been “created” – mainly influenced by the environment/government activities – and/or “inherited” – they believe it is a continuation of their parents’ status. Through the power of self perception, narrative and reflection, as standpoint theory promotes, most participants indicated that they were deprived of time to spend on their families and social events. Accordingly, this deprivation fosters ageing and unhappiness – conditions that result in people looking older than their age. In short, many of the participants stated that the life they live is not the one they would choose but is the life chosen one for them, given the fact that the situation in Odi community is detrimental to their well-being. Nonetheless, they are hopeful that if they are empowered, they will be able to live a good life, as Sen’s capability approach holds that capabilities can be enhanced. Ubumpofu maqondana nabesifazane kuvame ukusondelwa kubo ngokwezici ezintathu ezinomthelela eziye zagcizelelwa emibhalweni yokuthuthukiswa kwabesifazane nobulili nokuthuthukiswa (WID/GAD): (1) ukukhula kwemindeni ephethwe abesifazane (FHHs); (2) ukungalingani kwangaphakathi kwekhaya kanye nokuchema kwabesifazane namantombazane; kanye (3) nezinqubomgomo zezomnotho nezokuncishiswa kwezindleko zikahulumeni, okuhlanganisa ukulungiswa kwesakhiwo kanye noguquko lwemakethe yangemva yezindlela zokukhiqiza nokusabalalisa ezilawulwa umphakathi. Bank regulation in the selected sub-Saharan African countries: Dynamics and trends

    No full text
This paper discusses the dynamics of bank regulation in the Sub-Saharan African (SSA) region during the period before the 1990s and post 1990s and describes the trends in bank regulatory measures between 1995 and 2017 using the updated databases of the World Bank’s Bank Regulation and Supervision Surveys. Before the 1990s, bank regulation in the majority of SSA countries was inadequate and that led to multiple occurrences of banking crises. As a result, many countries introduced the financial sector reforms from the late 1980s that included major adjustments in the banking regulatory and supervisory frameworks. In both low-income and middle-income SSA economies, bank regulatory environment became more stringent over time, driven by increased restrictions on bank entry barriers and ownership structure, as well as the introduction of macroprudential policies in the case of the former, while in the case of the latter, it was influenced by more restrictions on bank ownership structure and capital regulation requirements, as well as the adoption of macroprudential policies. Overall, the bank regulatory environment was slightly more stringent in middle-income than in low-income SSA countries over the period under review.Economic

Structural validity and measurement invariance of the short version of the Big Five Inventory (BFI-10) in selected countries

    No full text
We sought to determine the applicability and structural equivalence of a personality instrument developed in western, educated, industrialised, rich and democratic (WEIRD) contexts in non-WEIRD environments. The data for this study came from interviews conducted during the sixth wave of the World Values Survey in the Netherlands (N = 1902), Germany (N = 2046), Rwanda (N = 1527), and South Africa (N = 3531). We conducted exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to assess structural validity and measurement invariance. The findings from the Big Five Inventory 10 (BFI-10) instrument did not support a perfect five-factor model as theorised by the Big Five Personality model across all countries, even though Germany and the Netherlands obtained better As a result, the findings do not support structural validity and do not demonstrate measurement invariance between WEIRD and non-WEIRD countries. The findings indicate that while the concise BFI-10 instrument partially replicates the structure of the B5P model in WEIRD countries, it falls short in non-WEIRD countries. Users of the instrument should therefore proceed with caution in both WEIRD and non-WEIRD contexts, bearing in mind the instrument’s structural flaws

A re-reading of the concept of ר דה (Râdâh) in Genesis 1:26-28 in the post-apartheid context : an African liberationist approach

    No full text
Includes bibliographical referencesThis project considers a liberationist meaning of the concept of ר דה (rādāh) found in the Priestly material of Genesis 1:1-2:4a. The study starts from a presupposition that the South African history of biblical interpretation is problematic, and this remains a challenge in the post-apartheid era. Secondly, there is a general paucity of exegesis of African liberation hermeneutics on creation narratives. Lastly, the historical-critical method, which dominates commentary on Genesis 1:26-28, is inadequate in addressing issues of social justice. In Genesis 1:26-28, רדה as an enigmatic and phenomenal concept that invites investigation has undergone enormous scrutiny in past scholarship. In these verses, no construct has been evaluated more fervently and attracted curiosity more than the concept of ר דה , which traditionally translates as “dominion.” To date, it remains a striking literary construct giving birth to lively disputes and discussions among scholars across generations. The study primarily fits within the ambit of Old Testament studies with a particular perspective of African liberation hermeneutics. Thus, the study is based on the presupposition that it is legitimate to read the Bible through “Other lenses” than the traditional historical-critical lens. It demonstrates that there are other valid hermeneutical approaches to reading the Old Testament based on the social realities of contemporary Africa. The study acknowledges that Africa is far more a complex continent with varying cultures, religious experiences and political history. The study presents an exegetical case study by dealing with expanded understanding of ר דה that includes caring for fellow human beings by way of social justice. This marks a major inexorable shift of hermeneutical and epistemological power from the West to other parts of the globe. The study also contributes to post-apartheid discourse on the relevance of African liberation hermeneutics.D. Th. (Old Testament)Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studie

Research ethics to consider when collecting oral histories in wilderness areas such as the Kruger National Park

    No full text
In the last half century, oral history has emerged as a historical approach that is being considered by archivists involved with the collection and accessibility of archival collections for researchers and interested members of the public. The approach to ethics by oral historians has emerged from two major fears: the fear of failing as researchers and the fear of failing the narrators and doing harm. Archivists also need to be cognisant of these fears when collecting oral history. Confronting these fears makes it possible to understand the complex questions behind oral historians’ and archivists’ preoccupations and sheds light on how oral history has evolved and expanded as a field. The research objectives of this article are to determine the three principles identified from the Belmont Report that relate and should be applied to the collection of oral histories by archivists and historians from communities and individuals residing and working in and alongside the Kruger National Park. The theoretical framework for this article is the critical race theory to address historical accounts from communities and individuals sidelined by the mainstream media in South Africa. For the purposes of this article, the study was conducted with the Makuleka and Tsonga communities to determine what ethical implications need to be respected when conducting oral history projects with communities. Contribution: This article will contribute to ethics concerning social sciences and specifically the collection of oral history.Information Scienc

An analysis of the effects of parent emigration on the social security of children left behind: the case of Highfield, Harare in Zimbabwe

    Get PDF
Abstract in English with Afrikaans and Northern Sotho translationsThis study examined the perspectives of caregivers on how parental emigration impacts the social security of children left behind in Highfield, Zimbabwe. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews with caregivers, as well as focus group discussions with teachers and social workers respectively, were used to obtain qualitative data. To select the research participants, the study employed a non-probability sampling technique through purposive sampling. The study drew upon three theories as a theoretical lens to contextualise the findings: Bowen's Family Systems Theory, Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Family Systems Theory, and the theory of motivation from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. As part of the qualitative research, thematic analysis was used to describe the effects of parental emigration on the social security of the children left behind. Findings reveal the varying, complex, and perpetual social security challenges children face in the absence of their parents since, in Zimbabwe, there are no specific social security policies in place for such children who are left behind. Various stakeholders, including caregivers, communities, emigrant parents, government, and non-governmental organisations, must play a leading role in protecting the children left behind, as the social security that they can provide guarantees that the children will thrive, even when their parents are absent due to parental emigration. Utilisation of HIV services by female sex workers in Zimbabwe during the COVID-19 pandemic: a descriptive phenomenological study

    Get PDF
This study focuses on female sex workers as a key population group that suffers a degree of vulnerability according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Key populations refer to people at heightened risk of contracting the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) due to specific behaviours and social and legal environments which increase their vulnerability to the virus. Key populations are disproportionately affected by HIV, yet they have less access to HIV services compared to the general population. The coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown and its restrictive measures have further widened the inequalities and gaps in accessing HIV services for this group. A descriptive phenomenological study was undertaken to explore female sex workers’ experiences of utilisation of HIV services during COVID-19. The study setting was the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Zimbabwe. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews with 10 female sex workers. Purposive sampling coupled with snowballing was utilised for recruiting participants. Data were analysed guided by the seven-step Colaizzi technique. Rigour was ensured through adhering to Lincoln and Guba’s trustworthiness criteria. The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected the livelihoods of sex workers and their utilisation of HIV services. There was limited access to HIV services due to an initial lack of travel authorisation letters and financial challenges experienced by study participants. In addition, the quality of care in health care facilities was further compromised by poor screening processes and reduced provider-client interactions. Maintaining access to HIV services for female sex workers during pandemics is critical for the country to attain HIV epidemic control.College of Human Science

An investigation into the integration of industry 4.0 with lean management in supply chain to advance productivity

    Get PDF
This study investigated the implementation techniques that an organisation can follow to advance supply chain process efficiency by integrating lean management and Industry 4.0 initiatives in its procurement process for research equipment. The study reviewed models of integration for both Industry 4.0 and lean management approaches and suggests a seamless, integrative approach that can be implemented by organisations in a practical manner. The higher education sector spends a substantial percentage on purchases of research equipment and related services annually, and then face multiple challenges regarding supply chain processes such as deficiencies in implementation of internal controls relating to supply chain management and procurement. These inefficiencies affect major research activities by having long lead times for research equipment and thus delaying the research process. A survey was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of a procurement process for research equipment among the users of this process. It was found that there were various issues and inefficiencies in the procurement process and ERP system such team responsiveness, order accuracy, time taken to prepare and approve requisition and asset registration time. Moreover, a review of literature from practical cases where lean management and Industry 4.0 were implemented in supply chain processes was done to provide grounded practical recommendations. The study proposes solutions from lean management and Industry 4.0 to improve supply chain efficiency for the procurement process and develops key performance indicators for tracking of performance and efficiency. The recommendations are grounded on digitalization enablers and lean management, with an integrative approach. The study further makes a contribution by proving a blueprint that can be followed by an organisation to investigate supply process efficiency, identify areas of improvement, propose solutions, provide an implementation plan, and provide tracking mechanism. The novelty of this research is that it proposes a practical approach of integrating industry 4.0 and lean management, not only from the point of theoretical framework but real-world application. In summary, this study investigates supply chain efficiencies, tests the implementation of integration models for Industry 4.0 and lean management, and develop recommendations aimed at improving the supply chain efficiency, in a practical manner.Ph. An evaluation of the effectiveness of the teaching of sexual and reproductive health education in Zimbabwean secondary schools

    No full text
Text in English, abstracts in English and ZuluThe study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching of sexual and reproductive health education (SRHE) in Zimbabwean secondary schools in Masvingo, Manicaland and Mashonaland East Provinces. The study was guided by the Information- Motivation Behavioural Skills model. The study employed a pragmatic research paradigm, a mixed methods approach and a concurrent triangulation research design. A sample of 543 participants (480 secondary school students, 60 SRHE teachers and 3 G & C SIs) was selected so that inferences about the population could be made or be drawn from it. Students were of age range 11- 24 years old. Self administered questionnaires, face to face interviews and FGDs were used to collect data. Quantitative and qualitative data were analysed independently and merged at the interpretation stage. Quantitative data was assigned numerical codes, entered into the SPSS version 21 then analysed using descriptive measures: mode and median. The quantitative data was also analysed using chi- square tests for independence. The computed chi square tests showed no significant relationhip between gender and type of school for both teachers and students in the majority of the questions. Qualitative data was analysed thematically. Qualitative findings were reported under each of the following themes: Sexual and reproductive health education content taught in secondary schools, how SRHE programme is taught in secondary schools, the perceived benefits of the teaching of SRHE in schools, factors influencing effective teaching of SRHE in schools, and strategies that can be employed to enhance effective teaching of SRHE in secondary schools and sub-themes using verbatim quotes. From the findings of the study, it was concluded that teachers were not using participatory methods when teaching SRHE, teachers were not making use of peer educators, teachers were not trained in both content and teaching methods and teaching and learning materials were inadequate. The study recommends that teachers be equipped with adequate and relevant information, skills, and attitudes that ensure effective teaching of SRHE in secondary schools. The study also recommends that teacher training, provision of adequate resources, dealing with negative attitudes and perceptions and student-friendly environment be addressed for effective teaching of SRHE in secondLolu cwaningo belufuna ukuhlola ukusebenza kahle kokufundiswa kwemfundo yezempilo yezocansi kanye nokuzala (SRHE) ezikoleni zamabanga aphezulu zaseZimbabwe eMasvingo, Manicaland kanye naseMashonaland East Province. Factors contributing to low uptake of isoniazid preventive therapy amongst health care workers in a hospital of Manzini Region, Swaziland

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that contribute to the low uptake of isoniazid preventive therapy amongst health care workers (HCWs) in a hospital of Manzini region, Swaziland. A quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional research design was used as the researcher aimed at getting precise measurements, quantification and generalizable results (Polit & Beck 2017:163). Two hundred and one (201) health care workers responded and completed the questionnaires faithfully, and then the researcher gathered the results, compiled the study, assigned numerical values to variables, and specified how the variables were measured. The research site was a hospital of Manzini region, Swaziland. The dependent variables were the factors that contribute to the low uptake of isoniazid preventive treatment (IPT) and the independent variables were the selected respondents who were working in medical wards and outpatient departments and have worked there for more than a year. Data Analysis The researcher was available to clarify any misunderstanding. Data coding was used, to organize the data collected. It was entered into Microsoft Excel 2014 and then imported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) v24.0 for statistical analysis. Tables and graphs were used to present the collected data. Study Results The results of the study suggest that health care workers generally do not support the implementation of IPT on them as a preventative measure against TB. The results further suggest that the long period of taking Isoniazid as compared to the limited durability of IPT benefit of 2-3 years is a major deterrent factor to HCWs taking IPT. Lastly, the results indicate that knowledge is not as great a determinant factor to IPT uptake as previously posited in other studies, and that most HCWs support the provision of alternative prevention methods such ventilation of spaces and wearing of masks. This illustrates that the topic of the factors contributing to the low uptake of IPT amongst health care workers is a worthwhile topic for further research.Inhloso yalolucwaningo kucacisa tigci letingumtselela ekunatseni kancane emaphilisi i-isiniazid emkhatsini wetisebenti tasesibhedlela, esifundzeni saka Manzini, Swaziland.
