The publishing history and production patterns of picture and illustrated South African children’s books published from 2000 - 2020: an empirical study
The world we live in is constantly changing, resulting in new challenges. Over the past decades, there have been numerous developments in the children’s books industry. In an in-depth literature review it was learnt that book publishing plays an important role in any literary system and can be regarded as a mirror reflecting changes in the political, social, economic and cultural systems. Picture and illustrated books have a unique place in children’s literature and are considered an important subsystem of children’s literature.
The publishing scenario of South African children’s books published in the 21st century is not well documented. Various attempts have been made over the years to compile bibliographies of South African children’s books. These lists provide valuable information on the publishing of South African children’s books. However, no comprehensive list of South African picture and illustrated books published since 2000 could be traced. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap and to give prominence to this field by providing a statistical mapping of the material production of picture and illustrated books, the state of publishing, trends and production patterns.
A production profile of South African children’s picture and illustrated books provides evidence of the publishing history of children’s books. The production profile takes the form of an enumerative bibliography, the core of the production profile. An enumerative bibliography lists precisely what was published in a given period or genre, or by a particular author and illustrator. To address the question How can a production profile of South African children’s picture and illustrated books expose the state of publishing, production trends, and production patterns in this genre from 2000 to 2020? statistical-quantitative empirical research is used.
This study contributes to an understanding of the important role of different role players in the production of picture and illustrated books and provides valuable information on the state of publishing of picture and illustrated books. The findings provide historical insight into the nature and production patterns of picture and illustrated books and reveal changes, trends, relationships and developments in the first two decades of the 21st century.Ph. The structural relationship between attitude, locus of control, life satisfaction and subjective well-being
This research endeavoured to conceptualise a psychological model to establish the
relationship and predictive correlation between attitude, locus of control, and satisfaction
with life on subjective well-being, being a latent construct and dependent variable in this
study. The model was moderated by sociodemographic variables, specifically gender, age,
personal income, and relationship status. Measurement invariance or measurement
equivalence between the measured research constructs was also explored. The pursuit of a
more enduring positive emotive state of satisfaction with life and well-being has become a
focal point in various academic disciplines and their applications. Subjective well-being (SWB)
is intrinsically valued as a measure of the end goal of all human activities and extrinsically
valuable as a predictor of change in societal conditions and progress. Consequently,
researching SWB bears importance. Secondary data (n = 10 516) comprising an adult,
graduate sample was utilised that was obtained from quantitative cross-sectional surveys
between 2017 and 2019 of which the research instruments involved the non-verbal Self Assessment Manikin (SAM) scale to collect attitude (Pleasure-Arousal-Dominance) data, the
Personal Mastery scale to collect locus of control (LOC) data, and the Satisfaction With Life
(SWL) scale to collect life satisfaction data. It was established that gender, age, personal
income, and relationship status moderate SWB in different intensities. The predictive effect
of these variables on SWB is firstly determined by SWL, followed by LOC, and then PAD, which
are then further moderated by gender, age, income, and relationship status. The data
conceptualises the literature study of the conceptual model presented. Besides descriptive
statistics, the model could be confirmed by means of structural equation modelling, multiple
regression analysis and by establishing the relative predictive effect of the sociodemographic
variables on SWB. The results contribute to the understanding of SWB as a primary latent
psychological construct to ensuring a mentally healthy and sustainable society. A contribution
is made to the theoretical foundation underlying salutogenic psychology and well-being
research, and also contributes to the methodological and psychometric qualities of the
research instruments utilised for addressing the research objectives.D. Phil. (Psychology)Psycholog
Shaka Inkosi YamaKhosi
Shaka Inkosi yamaKhosi is a short animation film that is set on the narrative of uShaka ka Senzangakhona – the ruler of the Zulu kingdom/nation. A short synopsis is presented below before a full description of the work ispresented.
A young meek boy, Manzini is bullied by three boys on his way back from school in an incident that almost costs him his life. Manzini confesses to his Gogo his desire to quit school. His Gogo narrates a profound tale of resilience evoking the coming-of-age story of a great King, Shaka Zulu, to inspire her grandson through the strength of his lineage. Transporting viewers to the 1700s in the grasslands of KwaZulu-Natal, Queen Nandi gives birth to uShaka who was illegitimately fathered by Senzangakhona Ka Jama a prince of the Jama tribe. We follow the grooming of uShaka into a conqueror and influential King of the Zulu kingdom/nation. Composing the score for this short film was an interesting but challenging project where the emotion and tone of the picture were influenced and informed by the score (music). This project sought to use amahubo akwaZulu and some indigenous Nguni instruments as the foundation of the score.
The instruments I speak of are uGubhu which I sampled recordings of Princess Magogo ka Dinizulu in one of the scenes as a commemoration of the Princess because she was a musician herself and has strong ties with the Zulu lineage. This was one of the most difficult task because of many factors like the caliber of the instrument’s temperament, it neither 440 nor it is 442. I figured out that voicing plays a big role in hiding those imperfections within a chord or a progression. Open Fifths in the lower instruments such as double basses and Cellos accommodate the tuning differences all of these instruments have. The other challenge was the meter; the way she played her instrument was rubato but with a strong sense of structure, and with that, I was confident that there was some meter, which in this case ended up being 5/4 or 15/8. You can listen to this section at 05:54.
The music score featured my original compositions and my arrangements/orchestration of traditional Zulu themes that were either sung before, during, or after the war (War cries), nursery rhymes from the Zulu culture, and a composition by King Shaka Zulu himself. My primary duty as the composer and arranger was to orchestrate all the above-mentioned music whilst preserving the authenticity of these themes. This was a strong effort towards contributing to decolonial projects that are emerging and the eminent 4IR since this project used animation as the medium. Animation availed the opportunity to introduce these indigenous themes to the younger generation who as per our prediction will be the consumers of this project and future custodians of this African heritage. Due to the lack of accessibility of these themes, this was a rare opportunity for me to be deliberate in making sure that these themes are at the forefront of the orchestration. One of the other interesting encounters I had while writing this score was how most of our themes do not have equal numbers of bars like the one featured at min 09:53 which is a call and response theme, the structure of the theme is 3+2+4+2 and the last 2 comes from the caller which I decided to also write in 5/4 and was divided in 3+2, This meant that the melody will shift within the bar line for 13 cycles before it goes back to 1. The narrative of the short film is told in juxtaposition between the past and present and the decision came from the music suggesting those undertones due to implementing modern instruments to these almost forgotten themes.Art and Musi
The lived experiences of displaced rural farmers due to urbanization in Bishoftu City of Ethiopia
This study covers the lived experiences of persons displaced due to urban expansion. The study
primarily aims at understanding the perspectives of the displaced farming community members
living surrounding Bishoftu city. It looks at the effect of urbanization on displaced people from
various viewpoints, including social, cultural, psychological, and economic aspects. The
research employs a descriptive research design with a qualitative research approach, with data
primarily collected through in-depth interviews and field observations. Through snowball
sampling, the research provides detailed accounts of 21 interviewed persons who experienced
displacement. Although the displaced people had substantial economic, social, political, spatial,
and cultural resources before they were displaced, they have now become economically, socially,
politically, spatially, and culturally marginalized. The study also reveals that displaced farmers
have lost many of their cultural and social traditions, which are critical in coping with the social,
psychological, spiritual, and economic challenges that they face. Criminality and immorality
have permeated the culture as informal social control mechanisms derail. Many are
impoverished, and some resort to socially immoral means of subsisting, such as begging. The
study demonstrates some benefits in the lives of few displaced people, including women, by
enhancing their access to infrastructure and creating employment opportunities. The study
proposes that displaced people progress through four phases following their displacement. It also
suggests that social disorganization theory can be extended to explain the chaos and disruption
caused by urbanization in peri-urban areas. The thesis further implies that there are two classes
of elites, neither of which contributes substantially to the improvement of the displaced.D. Phil (Sociology)Sociolog
Exploring the touchpoints that influence a customer's experience in Gauteng branches of a South African retail bank
Text in English, abstracts in English and ZuluRegardless of the rapid proliferation of digital technologies within the banking industry in recent
years, the sustained importance of bank branches as a channel that offers retail banks an
opportunity to interact with customers face-to-face cannot be ignored. In a highly competitive
environment such as the retail banking industry, it is imperative that retail banks understand
how their customers’ interactions in bank branches influence their experiences to develop and
maintain competitive advantages. This study aimed to explore the touchpoints that influence a
customer’s experience in Gauteng branches of a South African retail bank and to use the
identified touchpoints to map the customer’s experience journey. The study followed a
qualitative research design utilising semi-structured interviews conducted on Microsoft Teams
to identify customer perceptions of touchpoints during a retail bank branch visit, interrogate the
perceived influence of the identified touchpoints and painpoints on the customer’s experience,
and identify the most important touchpoints as perceived by customers.
The findings identified 15 unique touchpoints, including staff, servicescape, advertising, and
automated teller machines. The 15 touchpoints were further categorised into five main themes:
human interactions, servicescape, bank processes, services offered by the bank, and bank
systems, with human interactions being revealed as the most important theme. Several
recommendations are made to the banking industry, including improving staff training and
knowledge, improving customer service, and increasing security and privacy during a branch visit.Ngaphandle kokusabalala okusheshayo okusheshayo kobuchwepheshe bedijithali embonini

A pragmatic exploration of naming practices in Siswati
Bibliography: leaves 199 - 215This study is a pragmatic exploration of naming practices in Siswati. It examined personal names bestowed on newborns and focused on how the emaSwati use names to convey messages to their interlocutors by using speech acts, which are categorised as commands, requests and interrogatives. It was established that name-givers include great grandparents, grandparents, parents, parents’ friends, aunts, uncles and sometimes siblings. To be eligible for this task, these individuals must meet the felicity conditions concerning naming, they must have authority to bestow the names and have relations with the name-bearers. Name-givers who are not relatives are given consent by the child’s kin to issue a name on their behalf. Data was gathered through interviews and questionnaires. Purposive sampling was used to select informants and obtain rich data on personal names. Names that are commands, requests and interrogatives were identified and the situations or contexts that informed the naming were also explored. The speech act theory and systemic functional linguistics were the theories that underpinned the study. Some personal names in Swazi culture are speech acts wherein name-givers communicate precise messages to specific interlocutors or hearers. The speech acts involved in naming are influenced by the way of life of emaSwati, their cultural traits, challenges, aspirations, emotions and frustrations as they interact with one another in encounters such as community struggles, failure to offer bride price, their religious beliefs, marriage problems, issues involving the paternity of a child and their desires about the roles their children should play when they have grown up. Hence, naming as a speech act is context-bound. The naming practices also revealed that naming is a functional process wherein language is used to carry actions such as making demands, requests and asking questions. On the part of the name-bearers, some are proud of their names because of the informative and authoritative messages they contain, while others dislike the meaning of their names especially when, for instance, the name exposes complex information such as denied paternity. However, they use their names as permanent identity markers which they were given at birth.D. Phil. (Languages, Linguistics and Literature)African Language

Ritual, liminality and communitas in Wiccan Open Circles and covens in Canada and the United States
Wiccan Open Circles, have been in existence since the early 1960’s, which developed from an Outer Court system of Wicca. Since the individual small coven groups could not accommodate the growing interest in the religion, Outer Courts were formed. The purpose of an outer court system was designed so that High Priesthood of an existing traditional coven could provide a space where new witches would be trained and exposed to Wiccan ritual. Open Circles are similar to the Outer Court system because members of the public are able to experience the rituals that are similar in style to coven rituals and are also able to learn more about the religion. This study focuses on the ritual, liminality and communitas as it occurs in both Open Circle type rituals as well as traditional initiatory covens. In this is a qualitative study, making use of the various techniques of participant observation to gather data.M.A. (Anthropology)Anthropology and Archaeolog
