The political economy of peri-urban transformations in Zimbabwe under globalisation - a case study of Harare
The bulk of urban studies in sub-Saharan Africa has, hitherto, focused on the impacts of
structural adjustment programmes on urban productivity and citizen welfare. However,
little is known about the dynamics (Mbiba & Huchzermeyer, 2002: 114) of the structural
gaps between the stated policy prescriptions and implementation practices, on one hand,
and on the other, between the policy practices and lived experiences of ordinary residents
in the marginalised urban spaces in developing countries that neoliberal economic
structural reforms have engendered. Meanwhile the dominant perspectives on the nature
and meaning of “‘peri-urban’” have intensified instead of stemming the crises of
managing increasingly contested urban frontiers in the poorer countries (Mbiba &
Huchermeyer, 2002: 114; Simon, et al., 2004; Lombard, 2016). Using Harvey’s (2003)
revised and extended Marxist perspective of “primitive accumulation by dispossession”
on jambanja, the study critically engages with the “multiple realities” (Giddens, 1984)
of radically transformed peri-urban landscapes in a case study of Harare. The study
deploys a mixed method strategy to capture multiple data sets through semi-structured
interviews, focus group discussions and biographical accounts (Creswell & Brown, 1992;
Mouton, 2003: 196) across different contexts of the ‘peri-urban’ in Harare. These
contexts range from Zimbabwe’s abandoned neoliberal structural reform programme
(Bond & Manyanya, 2003; Mbiba, 2017a: 8-9) to the country’s elitist policy projects of
jambanja and Operation Murambatsvina (Moyo, 2013a; 2013b) post-2000. Drawing on
the lived experiences of purposively selected town planners and ordinary peri-urban
residents, the study builds conceptual blocks to bridge the gaps between the official
policy prescriptions and the everyday life experiences of intended beneficiary ordinary
residents. The study concludes that the emerging palimpsest peri-urban interface in sub Saharan Africa can be productive sites for understanding the dynamics of informalised The bulk of urban studies in sub-Saharan Africa has, hitherto, focused on the impacts of

An Assessment of the Covid-19 Pandemic in South Africa: From its Impact on the Economy to the Rebuilding Strategy
The conventional understanding is that the coronavirus pandemic (Covid19) has challenged the development of the economies at all levels – global,
regional and domestic. The need to assess its damage to the South African
economy became imperative if the economy has to be resuscitated in an
informed and targeted way. The study therefore aimed at assessing the impact
of the Covid-19 Pandemic in South Africa, assessing the effectiveness of the
South African government response to Covid-19 and outlining government
strategies that have been employed in an effort to rebuild the South African
economy. The study utilised the qualitative research approach in which semistructured interviews were used to collect information on a purposive sample
of 12 participants. Through the use of thematic analysis as the data analysis
method, the study discovered that the Covid-19 pandemic has both long-term and short-term impacts on the South African economy such as loss of
employment, contracting GDP, depressed growth below pre-pandemic
projections and lack of organisational performance. In response to Covid-19,
the government introduced supporting programmes to businesses, regulations
aimed at allowing credit facilities and partnership with various stakeholders.
Strategies such as expansionary monetary strategies and the introduction of
specific programmes targeting the resuscitation of key economic sectors have
been implemented to rebuild the economy. The study, therefore, recommends
that the government needs to build a buffer of resources in preparation of
devastating pandemics such as Civid-19, such that when the country is hit by
the pandemic, there are avenues that can be explored to resuscitate the
economy. There is also need to ensure that there is a platform where business
organisations can flourish as they can access capital and resources.Graduate School of Business Leadershi
Managing assets to facilitate circularity and sustainability of food systems
The United Nations Zero Hunger Challenge focuses on finding solutions to achieve the 2030 SDG 2 targets, albeit in a manner that is consistent with the precepts of circular economy. Sustainable solutions to food accessibility, security and continuous improvements in nutrition will invariably depend on effective management of the value networks that characterize the forward loops of systems of food production and distribution as well as the reverse loops of food waste management. Food systems encompass physical assets within value networks that are inextricably interwoven within societal structures, the natural environment and ecology. Given that societal structures are conventionally delineated in terms of governance, industrial and commercial sectors of endeavor, as well as within local, regional and global jurisdictions, it is paramount that natural assets (e.g., land, vegetation) and engineered assets (e.g., equipment, machinery, infrastructure) are effectively managed to facilitate circularity, security and sustainability of value networks that underpin systems of food production and distribution, nutrition improvements and food waste management. This paper highlights the need for proper management of land and engineered assets. The discourse emphasizes a ‘whole-of-life’ approach to physical asset management that takes into account both the forward and reverse logistics processes of food systems so as to concurrently conform to circular economy precepts and sustainable development imperatives.Colleges of Economic and Management Science

The experiences of women academic leaders on working and leading teams in higher education institutions during a pandemic
Text in EnglishThe overall aim of this study was to uncover the experiences of women academic leaders in Higher Education Institutions on leading teams and working remotely, while dealing with family related responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study is grounded on feminist research theory, following a qualitative research methodology and a phenomenological research design. Data was collected by means of written narratives and in-depth interviews, with the aim of illuminating women academic leaders’ experiences and challenges. A purposeful sample of 8 participants, made up of South African women who were in academic leadership positions in Higher Education Institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic, provided a rich narrative on the experience women on their professional roles and other responsibilities during a pandemic. The data was analysed following thematic data analysis steps.
The findings of the study reveal profound resilience and multifaced realms of challenges that women face daily. With great reference to the literature review and theoretical framework, the findings of the research indicated that women in general face multiple challenges personally and professionally, the pandemic seemed to have magnified these challenges. Despite the challenges and hardship experienced in their personal and professional lives, women academic leaders show resilience, drawing their strength from their institutions, families, and adaptive coping strategies.
This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the challenges of women leaders and those who aspire to be in leadership positions and advocates for a more inclusive and supportive society for women and girl children. This research highlights the critical need for tailored support strategies and interventions to address the unique needs and hardships that women face daily, by amplifying the voices of women in academic leadership positions and shedding the light on their experiences.M. The effects of learner violence on educators and their coping mechanisms : a qualitative exploratory study of educators in the Mopani West District, Limpopo
Abstract in English with Sepedi and Afrikaans translationsNumerous reports about violence in South African schools have become an issue of concern for both government and society. Due to the high incidences of school violence, schools are no longer viewed as safe and secure teaching and learning environments.
From a South African perspective, research focuses mainly on violence toward learners and based on the researcher’s knowledge, very little attention has been given to violence toward educators in Limpopo, a province in South Africa. The researcher noted a serious lack of focus on incidents of violence directed at educators and their coping mechanisms after victimisation, particularly within Limpopo. The study aimed to explore the effects of learner violence toward educators, and to understand the coping mechanisms educators use after victimisation. This qualitative study applied the ecological systems theory as its theoretical framework.
The sample comprised eleven educators (one male and ten females) selected purposefully from six public secondary schools in the Mopani West District in the Limpopo province. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using an interview guide. A pilot study with two participants was first conducted to assess the suitability of the questions probing the experience of violence. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data collected. Although the experiences shared by the participants were unique, the thematic analysis revealed commonalities in the stories constructed by the participants. The themes included the causes of violence toward educators, the effects of learner violence toward educators, educators’ coping mechanisms and interventions suggested by educators.
The major findings revealed that violence in schools persists, and educators continue to be victims of violence perpetrated by learners. The participants articulated the need for psychological support. Most participants wanted the Department of Basic Education or the South African Council of Education to formulate a law or policy to train educators in terms of reducing school violence and coping following victimisation. The study therefore recommends that policy be put in place to handle learners who are violent towards educators.
(Psychology)Psycholog
Open government alignment for effective e-participation
The introduction of electronic-participation initiatives in a form of involving community in various countries yielded positive results as compared to traditional mechanisms; more people are engaging government departments on various matters using technology. The South African government has implemented such initiatives to allow citizens to engage with various government departments. This study seeks to explore and discuss open government alignment for effective e-participation in South Africa.
Despite these initiatives by government, there is not enough literature detailing the extent alignment of open government for e-participation by its citizens. The study utilised institutional theory as a lens as it describes the normative, cognitive and the normative environment which captures the setting of government appropriately.
A purposive sample of employees at the BCMM were chosen. An interpretive inductive qualitative case study was the method selected to discover the alignment of open government initiatives within the government ecosystem in South Africa. Data was collected using interviews and with specific emphasis on government operating models that are supportive of open government initiatives, government mechanisms that enable effective strategic alignment of open government initiatives. To uncover specific subjects within the transcribed interviews, thematic and content analysis were used to examine the data that had been gathered. Identified themes infer that South African government still utilises traditional mechanisms to engage citizens. The information posted in government websites are reports meant to inform the public about what had happen in previous financial years but there isn’t much participation from citizens. The study concludes that there is a lot of work that needs to be done to get government ready to fully support its citizens towards active citizenry
A practical contribution from this study is that the South African government can adopt e-participation tools that seeks to connect the ordinary citizens with government administrators. Theoretically institutional theory captured the complex nature of the government environment. The use of an interpretive qualitative case study captured the entire picture of how the alignment of open government initiatives with a government department happen.M. Sc. An assessment of the utility of the shareholder primacy approach in contemporary South African company law
Text and abstract in EnglishThere are three main approaches that are accepted in corporate law cycles in considering the functions of the company, that is the pluralist, the enlightened shareholder value approach and shareholder centric approach. During the 1930s, the shareholder-centric model was the most viable of the three options. Traditionally the main rationale for managing companies was to consider the shareholder value oriented approach, whose main focus is centered on the company's interests which are to be matched with those of the equity providers. The interests of the shareholders are of the first priority when it comes to the shareholder-centric approach, and those of other stakeholders are only taken into account if doing so will maximize shareholder value. However, an argument in the 1930s between Berle and Dodd showed the flaws of the shareholder value approach, necessitating the adoption of the Enlightened Shareholder Value method (ESV). According to the ESV method, companies should strive for long-term shareholder profit maximization that pursues sustainable development and profitability based on responsible consideration to the complete a range of pertinent stakeholder interests. This brings about three questions which form part of this study, to what extent is the shareholder approach applicable in contemporary company law, what are the implications of the move towards stakeholder inclusivity on the shareholder wealth maximisation company objectives and how can corporate law approaches be developed and reformed to balance the shareholder and other stakeholders’ interests in corporate governance? This paper gives a vital analysis of the both the shareholders' and stakeholders' interests under the Companies Act and how each have been incorporated in such a way that both are taken into consideration when determining as to whose interests are important when acting in the organisation's best interests.LLM (Corporate Law)College of La
