The teaching pedagogy of TVET college lecturers : a case study of three Eastern Cape TVET colleges
Lecturers are central in delivering the vocational curriculum that is offered by Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, and they need to have relevant knowledge, qualifications, and skills. In the past, lecturers were recruited from industry with no teacher qualifications or teaching skills. This study aimed to investigate the experiences of TVET college lecturers who teach with or without pedagogy. This was a case study of three TVET colleges, and it was geographically limited to Eastern Cape province. It was a qualitative study which collected data using interviews, literature review and document analysis.
The main findings of this study were that general pedagogy and vocational pedagogy are not the same. Vocational curriculum outcomes differ from school curriculum outcomes. TVET college lecturers were not aware of the TVET college lecturer qualifications that are in the Government Gazette. The study recommends daily use of the concepts of pedagogy and vocational pedagogy by TVET colleges in their planning. Universities need to separate pedagogy and subject didactics in the design of lecturer qualifications. The gazetted lecturer qualifications need to introduce the concept of vocational pedagogy, and this must be fundamental across all the qualifications. A 1-year National Qualifications Framework Level 7 lecturer qualification should be developed by universities, which will aim to bridge the pedagogical knowledge gap between the traditional teacher qualifications and the lecturer qualifications, while the Department of Higher Education and Training needs to accommodate it in its policy on lecturer qualifications. A new model, called the ‘competence model for TVET college lecturers’ was developed, and it is recommended that it should be used as a guide in the employment of competent TVET college lecturers. This model will also be useful for the lecturers’ continuous professional development.D. Phil. (Education)English Studie
Modelling the critical success factors for evidence-based healthcare practice at a South African public hospital
Text in EnglishThis study aimed to investigate the critical success factors for the adoption of evidence-based healthcare practice at a Dr George Mukhari Academic hospital (DGMAH). The updated DeLone & McLean's updated information systems success model (D&M IS Success Model), the technological, organisational, and environmental (TOE) framework and the technological acceptance model (TAM) were used as the underpinning theories to develop the hybrid model. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was utilised to validate and test the proposed model. Data for the study were gathered using a self-administered questionnaire for medical healthcare professionals at DGMAH. The findings of the study show that the electronic health records (EHR) construct had a significant positive influence on information quality (IQ), knowledge quality (KQ) and diagnosis and treatment of diseases (DTD) in the final model, with values of (β =0.558, (p<0.05), (β=0.558, (p <0.05) and (β =0.558, (p <0.05), respectively.
Similarly, the study's findings also revealed a significant and positive correlation between two constructs: the adoption of evidence-based healthcare practice (EBHP) (r=0.299; p<0.05) and better coordination of patient care (r=0.294; p<0.05). Better patient care coordination is positively and significantly correlated with EHR (r= 0.121, p<0.05), DTD (r=0.173, p0.05), IQ (r= 0.221, p<0.05) and KQ (r=0.181, p<0.05). The path analysis' findings demonstrated that the goodness of fit indices including the goodness of fit index (GFI) of 0.905, the comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.905 and the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) of 0.035 were all within the acceptable range of values.
This study contributed to the development of a new framework that identified the critical success factors for EBHP at a public hospital in South Africa. The study's findings also make a considerable contribution to the body of knowledge in the fields of health informatics, particularly eHealth. Policymakers at the Department of Health as well as healthcare professionals who are sectional heads of different hospital departments may adopt the developed framework as a guideline on how to adopt and implement EBHP in public hospitals, as well as the critical success factors that need to be considered. Future research employing qualitative research methodologies should investigate additional factors that may have an impact on the adoption of EBHP.Ph. D. (Information Systems)School of Computin
Exploring managers’ perceived effectiveness of interventions aimed at eradicating workplace bullying
Summaries in English, Afrikaans and VendaThe general aim of this research was to explore managers’ perceptions of the
effectiveness of interventions aimed at eradicating workplace bullying, and to obtain
recommendations as to how such interventions might be improved or be effective in
eradicating workplace bullying. Workplace bullying has attracted considerable
attention globally among scholars, researchers, sociologists and organisational
psychologists, while locally the literature available on this phenomenon appears to
focus on its negative impact on both organisations and employees. Research also
explores the interventions organisations employ to eradicate workplace bullying. Most
of this research has been quantitative in nature, and so this study was conducted with
the aim of more closely exploring the lived experiences of participants; a qualitative,
exploratory and descriptive research design and approach were therefore adopted. A
purposive sample of ten line managers was selected for participation in the study, and
data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews. The literature review was
carried out with a view to conceptualising workplace bullying and its related constructs,
and to exploring interventions aimed at eradicating workplace bullying. This empirical
study therefore explored managers’ perceptions of the effectiveness of interventions
aimed at eradicating workplace bullying. A further intention of the study was to make
recommendations for the improvement of such interventions so as to benefit
organisations and their employees by ensuring a conducive environment that
enhances employee wellbeing and improves productivity, and in which bullying does
not occur. The research findings revealed managers to be aware of incidences of workplace
bullying in their organisation, with some managers having experienced it first-hand as
victim themselves, and others having been bystanders who witnessed others being
bullied. Managers mentioned witnessing different forms or types of workplace bullying,
and also identified a number of factors that contribute to and foster workplace bullying.
Those who had experienced and witnessed bullying testified to the detrimental impact
of workplace bullying in the organisation and on their fellow employees. Managers
were in agreement that there were interventions in place aimed at eradicating
workplace bullying in their organisation, and whereas they were in agreement that
those interventions were indeed to some degree successful, they were nevertheless
of the view that these could be improved, and made suggestions for improvement.
dus gevolg.
Bestuurders was getuies

Comprehensive review of the double-track policy in Ghana : challenges, prospects and perceived success
In September 2017, the Ghanaian government decided to implement a policy of offering complimentary secondary school education to all individuals who have successfully completed Junior High School. The Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy was anticipated to yield benefits for a significant number of students upon their completion of secondary education. The provision of a high-quality education for all students in Ghana is a fundamental objective which has been addressed through the implementation of the Free SHS policy. However, the implementation of Free SHS policy has resulted in a significant surge in high school enrolment within recent years necessitating the introduction of the double track policy. There is a prevailing concern among Ghanaians regarding the potential implementation of double track policy, as it is feared that it may lead to a decline in the standard of secondary education. This made this study necessary and pivotal. The main objective of this study was to examine the potential for implementing a dual track secondary education system in Ghana. Several research sub-questions were created to help achieve the goal. Advocacy Coalition Framework served as the theoretical foundation that underpinned this study. A descriptive research design was selected for this study. Both interpretivist and positivist paradigms were used. The methodology of choice for gathering and analysing both sets of data was qualitative and quantitative. MS Excel was used to analyse data. Questionnaires and interview guides were used to collect the data. Heads, teachers and students from various selected Senior High Schools were used in the study. In addition, a simple random sampling technique was used to select respondents. Data produced were imported into Microsoft Excel for quantitative data analysis while qualitative data was analysed thematically. The results demonstrated the difficulties and opportunities that are encountered when implementing the double track policy. The results highlighted different approaches adopted by stakeholders to carry out its effective implementation as well as problems resulting from their decisions. The findings also identified and described elements that enhanced or hampered the government’s ability to effectively implement the double track policy. The recommendations were used to develop an empirical framework that emphasises key factors that must be considered concurrently to successfully implement the Free SHS policy as well as the double track policy. This was a remarkable accomplishment despite all the obstacles encountered. In conclusion, this case study offered insightful information about the challenges involved in the implementation of double track policy. The goal of the study was to develop a framework for the effective implementation of the double track policy to positively influence the quality of Senior High School education in Ghana. It was designed with four objectives in mind: assessing the views of teachers, head teachers and students on the quality of teaching and learning in the SHSs, examining the effect of the double track on the quality of education at the SHS level, analysing the academic outcomes of students before and after the introduction of the double-track in SHSs and exploring the best practices of the Double Track on the quality of education. All stakeholders in the educational sector may find general use for the study's findings.PhD. (Education Management Studies)Educational Leadership and Managemen
Antimicrobial sensitivity testing of stored bacterial isolates from 2000 to 2021 in the agricultural sector
Antimicrobial resistance is a critical global concern that has a detrimental effects on both human and animal health as well as food security, development, and the economy. This study investigated the antimicrobial sensitivity of stored bacterial isolates from 2000 to 2021 in the agricultural sector across eight provinces in South Africa. A total of 216 bacterial isolates which represented four distinct bacterial pathogens: Salmonella enterica (n = 88), Escherichia coli (n = 30), Staphylococcus aureus (n = 64), and Listeria monocytogenes (n = 34) were revived and analyzed. Phenotypic antimicrobial profiling was determined against 12 antibiotics for S. enterica and E. coli isolates and 13 antibiotics for S. aureus and L. monocytogenes, using Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration methods. Conventional PCR was performed for confirmation of isolate species, serotypes, and screening of antimicrobial resistance genes (bla, tet, Dfr, qnr, sul, erm, cat1, flo, cm1A and mecA). The isolates that were lyophilized yielded a poor viability rate (31%), compared to 69% of the isolates preserved in tryptose broth-glycerol. Salmonella enterica and E. coli isolates were generally sensitive against all tested antibiotics except for tetracyclines. S. aureus showed high resistance (90-100%) to 11 antibiotics (penicillin, gentamycin, nitrofurantoin, chloramphenicol, linezolid, quinupristin-dalfopristin, tetracycline, vancomycin, erythromycin, kanamycin, and ciprofloxacin). All the tested L. monocytogenes showed a complete (100%) resistance against a wide range of antibiotics, including penicillin, gentamycin, kanamycin, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, quinupristin-dalfopristin, tetracycline, and erythromycin. The tetA and blaPSE genes were predominantly detected in S. enterica and E. coli while S. aureus isolates harbored a wide variety of antibiotic resistance genes namely mecA (44%), blaZ (39%), aap-apl (31%), and tetM (22%). Among the four serogroups of L. monocytogenes tested in this study, 71% of serogroup IIc harbored ermB and 42% of serogroup IVa carried the tetA gene. This retrospective study provides a glimpse into the antimicrobial sensitivity profile of major animal and foodborne pathogens over the years in the country. These data can be used in monitoring existing anti-microbial resistance (AMR) policies and strategies in South Africa.M.Sc. (Agriculture)Agriculture and Animal Healt
Economic impact of sectoral aid for trade on export performance of South Africa
This study explored the economic impact of Sectoral-Aid-for-Trade (SAfT) on export performance within South Africa’s agricultural and manufacturing sectors. Numerous generic studies had been conducted to assess the link between SAfT and export performance; however, there had been limited empirical research on country-specific Aid-for-Trade (AfT) and countries’ export performance in foreign markets, a gap this study completed by using South Africa as a case study. There was also a gap in academic literature regarding the impact of SAfT on the economic performance in emerging nations. Instead, literature argued that there was no guarantee that exports could positively influence the pecuniary growth of a country, and that there was doubt regarding the effectiveness of AfT initiatives, especially in African countries. This line of thought motivated the researcher to undertake an assessment of the economic impact of SAfT on the South African agricultural and manufacturing sectors’ export performance. The research was an attempt to assess how the SAfT impacts export performance within the South African agricultural and manufacturing sectors. Furthermore, the research was an attempt to assess the impact of exports within the agriculture and manufacturing sectors on economic growth.
Using the pooled data compiled from South African exporters in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors, covering a period of 17 years (2002 to 2019) where data was converted into frequency monthly data, the findings of the study were as follows:
1. In relation to the agricultural sector, the Granger causality test revealed a bidirectional association between the broadest SAfT measure and South African agricultural exports. The dynamic linear model looked more closely at how SAfT affected agricultural exports and found that it had a considerable positive influence, with Lag_BB-SAfT implying improved exports with more SAfT. Lag_N-SAfT, on the other hand, had a non-significant negative connection, while Lag_BBT-SAfT, despite being statistically significant, had only a little positive effect on exports because of its tiny magnitude.
2. In relation to the manufacturing sector, the Granger causality uncovered the bidirectional relationships between trade performance and aid initiatives. The study underscored the reciprocal influence of various SAfT forms on manufacturing exports, with potential implications for economic growth. Using dynamic linear approaches, the research further examined lagged SAfT variables, revealing significant positive correlations between Lag_N-SAfT and Lag_BB-SAfT with Manufacturing Exports, and signalling enhanced trade and economic development potential.
3. In relation to economic growth, the Granger causality test found a unidirectional significant impacts of exports on economic development. The research further explored the link between agricultural and manufacturing exports and economic growth, revealing that increased exports from both sectors correlated with higher economic growth, emphasizing the importance of trade in driving overall economic performance.
The investigation of the linkages between sectoral aid for trade (SAfT) and export performance in South Africa's manufacturing and agricultural sectors addresses gaps in the literature by offering sector-specific insights. The research illuminated the impacts of different SAfT types on exports and explores correlations between exports, SAfT, and economic growth, filling the void of longitudinal studies in this domain. By employing dynamic linear model, the study contributes to our understanding of the long-term effects of SAfT initiatives on exports and economic development. The empirical findings provide valuable information for policymakers and practitioners, offering potential policy suggestions and enhancing the understanding of how SAfT measures impact exports and contribute to economic growth, enabling more informed decision-making and resource allocation towards boosting both exports and economic growth.
The major recommendation from the study includes the need for South Africa to implement measures that attract targeted SAfT support to improve export performance and enhance economic growth. South Africa should aim to implement policies that improves the trade structures and prevent possible leakages in the governance architecture of the fund. Efforts should be made to optimise the gains of the funding by closing leakages, improving efficiency and maximise growth potentials through export promotion.
The key findings from the study are important for policymakers, especially those who regulate trade-related funding, because the country has to place a premium on the policy framework that is capable of enhancing the efficiency of the SAfT initiative, which may improve growth. Future research should consider investigating the influence of SAfT on export performance through sectoral value addition. Additionally, expanding the analysis to other sectors, employing qualitative methods, and exploring cross-country comparisons within regional blocs are suggested avenues to advance the frontiers of this study.D. The role of Open Distance Learning Institutions in the internationalisation of higher education in Southern Africa: the case of Unisa
This thesis examines the role that open distance learning institutions play in the internationalisation of higher education in Southern Africa. There has, over the past few decades, been a shift in higher education institutions and governments to focus more on international dimensions, specifically internationalisation. Internationalisation is an important component of higher education as it offers mutual benefits for all stakeholders, including the potential for increased international student enrollment, international citizenship for students, revenue generation, and brain gain. Distance education provides a unique opportunity to achieve many of these benefits, including increased international student enrollment and international citizenship for students, but at a larger scale than traditional institutions. As one of the largest providers of distance education in Africa, this study utilises the University of South Africa as a case study.
Incorporating evidence from in-depth interviews, this study shows that distance education institutions create a pathway for a greater number of students to access higher education, and due to their inherent flexibility and affordability, are able to cater to more diverse groups of students, unlike their traditional counterparts. It argues though that despite this, there are numerous challenges that foreign students encounter. These challenges highlight a disparity in how two groups of students (local and international) experience their studies. The study revealed that international students are faced with issues obtaining foreign currency needed to pay their school fees. They also experience difficulties in accessing their learning materials since they are, more often than not, reliant on a failing postal system and an information and communication network that is costly. Despite these difficulties, this study has shown that these students are resilient and find creative ways to overcome these challenges, highlighting the persevering nature of distance learners. As a result, distance education is best suited to meet internationalisation aspirations through increased access, flexibility, and knowledge sharing, through the provision of education to a group of students who would otherwise be excluded from tertiary studies.Geograph

New fixed point theorems via measure of noncompactness and its application on fractional integral equation involving an operator with iterative relations
Abstract
In this paper, Darbo’s fixed point theorem is generalized and it is applied to find the existence of solution of a fractional integral equation involving an operator with iterative relations in a Banach space. Moreover, an example is provided to illustrate the results
