Tracking progress related to implementation of monitoring & evaluation in accordance with the government wide monitoring and evaluation framework at OR Tambo District with reference to Mthatha Regional Hospital
Abstract in English with SeSotho and Xhosa translationsThe Eastern Cape Department of Health is expected to conduct M&E activities aimed at improving health systems in accordance with the National Development Plan. This study was conducted with the aim of tracking progress related to the implementation of Monitoring & Evaluation in accordance with the Government-wide Monitoring and Evaluation framework at OR Tambo District with reference to Mthatha Regional Hospital.
From the starting point of identifying a practical problem in terms of shortcomings related to M&E, there was a need to investigate potential challenges hindering the implementation of M&E.
The qualitative research approach was applied in this study, and the results showed among other findings, that that there is inadequacy in the integration of budget alignments to institutional strategic documents, lack of technical leadership approach in the development of programme indicators and a lack of capacity and motivation to carry out M&E in this institution such as institutional end-term reviews or organisational end term reviews.
The study concludes with a presentation of some discussions aimed at highlighting potential reinforcements that the ECDOH and other health stakeholders could consider in their attempts to strengthen M&E.Ngokuhambelana nesiCwangciso soPhuhliso seSizwe, iSebe lezeMpilo leMpuma Koloni kulindeleke ukuba liqhube imisebenzi yokubeka iliso nokuvavanya (M&E), ejolise ekuphuculeni iinkqubo zempilo. Olu phononongo lwenziwe ngenjongo yokulandela umkhondo wokuphunyezwa komgaqo-nkqubo wokubeka iliso novavanyo kwisibhedlele soMmandla saseMthatha, kwiSithili sase-OR Tambo.
Kwasekuqaleni kolu phando bekukho iziphene ezichongiweyo ngokunxulumene nokuphunyezwa kweM&E kwaye, emva koko, kubekho imfuneko yokuphonononga imingeni enokubakho ethintela ukuphunyezwa kweM&E kwiSibhedlele soMmandla saseMthatha.Indlela yophando esemgangathweni iye yasetyenziswa kolu phando kwaye iziphumo zibonise, phakathi kwezinye, ukuba kukho okungonelanga ekudityanisweni kolungelelwaniso lohlahlo lwabiwo-mali kumaxwebhu asemthethweni afana nesicwangciso-qhinga, ukungabikho kwendlela yobunkokeli bobugcisa ekuphuhliseni izikhombisi zenkqubo, kunye nokunqongophala kwabasebenzi kunye nenkuthazo yokwenza iM&E kweli ziko, njengophononongo lokuhlola indima ehanjiweyo ekupheleni kwexesha elithile.

ATLAS flavour-tagging algorithms for the LHC Run 2 pp collision dataset
Abstract
The flavour-tagging algorithms developed by the ATLAS Collaboration and used to analyse its dataset of

TeV pp collisions from Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider are presented. These new tagging algorithms are based on recurrent and deep neural networks, and their performance is evaluated in simulated collision events. These developments yield considerable improvements over previous jet-flavour identification strategies. At the 77% b-jet identification efficiency operating point, light-jet (charm-jet) rejection factors of 170 (5) are achieved in a sample of simulated Standard Model

Curriculum changes and implementation in Eswatini : the pedagogy of Geography teaching in secondary schools
The Southern Africa region is currently undergoing curriculum reforms like the rest of the
world and the major shift is from the traditional methods of teaching to competency-based
education to meet the changing needs and demands of society. In Eswatini, the
secondary curriculum was changed in 2006 from GCE to IGCSE and in 2009, to a
localised SGCSE now called EGCSE. However, limited studies have been undertaken to
determine if the new curriculum is relevant and implemented properly. The main objective
of this study was to analyse the Geography curriculum changes in Eswatini and establish
the nature of the changes and assess its implementation. Geography is a practical subject
hence constructivist methods are useful for Geography learners to acquire skills for lifelong
learning. Qualitative methods were employed to collect data from three teachers
from three schools through in-depth individual interviews, classroom observations and
document analysis. The data was analysed using the grounded theory. Memos were
written where the findings were categorised into themes, analysed and compared in order
to determine emerging patterns, and to triangulate the data. The results of the study
indicated that the EGCSE geography curriculum has changed in terms of its subject
matter, teaching objectives and approaches. However, when it comes to the acquisition
of the stipulated learner outcomes, problems were identified which indicated that the
learners had not mastered the skills and were thus unable to use and apply them. Scores
of learners were affected negatively as it resulted into poorer results in examinations.
Factors found to limit successful implementation of the curriculum were lack of ownership
and understanding of the curriculum by the teacher, teachers’ attitudes, some threats of
change, lack of appropriate resources to some schools, teachers’ training,
misconceptions about the curriculum and little time to adopt. Other factors included
inadequate material resources and pressure to perform in tests and examinations. The
study recommends the need for teacher training especially in practical aspects of
geography and provision of adequate resources especially to the rural schools.D. Phil. (Education (Curriculum Studies))Curriculum and Instructional Studie

Both the inclusive and differential measurements are found to be compatible with the Standard Model predictions, at next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics perturbation theory with next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections. The measurements are interpreted in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory, placing competitive bounds on several Wilson coefficients
Exploring first-year students’ perceptions and challenges of using podcasts and vodcasts to enhance academic writing skills in an ODeL institution in South Africa
This study explored first-year students’ perceptions and challenges of using podcasts and vodcast to enhance academic writing skills. Academic writing challenges faced by first-year students at an Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) institution in South Africa (Unix) are multifaceted. These challenges arise from insufficient writing skills developed in high school, the need to adapt to new writing standards, and limited language proficiency, especially for students who speak English as an additional language (EAL). The impact of these challenges includes higher dropout rates, increased failure rates, and delays in completing qualifications. Specific issues include understanding citation and referencing, developing the voice of the writer, producing appropriate academic text, paraphrasing, summarising, and adhering to academic writing conventions. The online nature of Unix further compounds these challenges and intensifies learning difficulties. Considering the existing gaps and challenges, this study implemented podcasts and vodcasts as supplementary tools, with the goal of decreasing transactional distance and enhancing academic writing support, for the large student population in ENG101 of approximately 18,000 students. The objectives included exploring student perceptions of using podcasts and vodcasts, identifying challenges related to accessing these resources, assessing the impact of podcasts and vodcasts on academic writing skills, and developing guidelines to leverage these tools to enhance academic writing in the module under study.
This study utilised qualitative action research methodology, drawing upon Moore’s theory of transactional distance (TTD) and Garrison et al.’s community of inquiry (Col) framework. By combining these frameworks, the study aimed to facilitate collaborative online interactions and meaningful engagement between lecturers and students, culminating in the construction of new knowledge. The implementation of podcasts and vodcasts within the research design proved suitable, as it involved a pragmatic and collaborative approach to systematically explore and improve on the challenges faced by students in academic writing. Through methods such as online open-ended evaluation discussions, focus group discussions, and document analysis, the study gathered data that highlighted improvements in participants’ comprehension of academic writing skills and positive perceptions of podcasts and vodcasts, which were found to be instrumental in aiding comprehension of prescribed and recommended

textbooks. Furthermore, these tools helped address the challenges associated with traditional study materials. The ENG101 students demonstrated improved skills in referencing, argumentation, logical organisation of ideas, adherence to grammar rules, and editing after the implementation of podcasts and vodcasts. These findings indicate that the implementation of podcasts and vodcasts has led to a reduction in transactional distance. Furthermore, they have contributed to an enhancement in the teaching, social, emotional, and cognitive presences in the module. Integrating digital multimedia files that cater to diverse learning styles and provide flexibility beyond traditional teaching styles is recommended for lecturers Furthermore, the study’s findings informed the development of guidelines to create high quality podcasts and vodcasts in the context of distance education universitiesPh. Impala (aepyceros melampus) habitat utilisation and activity Patterns in sourish mixed bushveld
The habitat utilisation and daily activity patterns of Impala at Loskop Dam Nature (LDNR) Reserve were studied to provide an insight into the management of this species. We used the Braun-Blanquet and TWINSPAN methods to classify plant communities within the
Impala home range. Movement data was collected using a GPS collar fitted onto an Impala ram (Aepyceros melampus), and field data about the animal’s home range and the behaviour of the breeding herd associated with him was collected through direct
observations. Seasonal home ranges, habitat selection and utilisation, as well as seasonal daily activity patterns were determined. Vegetation maps were produced to illustrate available plant communities, and seasonal home range maps were created to
show Impala movement patterns and home range sizes. Environmental variables considered in the analyses included rainfall, temperature, and photoperiod. The Impala home range comprised of a variety of plant communities and species forming various habitats that provided the necessary resources for the Impala to live and procreate. Impala utilised habitats with available quality and quantity of forage. The Euclea crispa- Vachellia karroo closed woodland plant community was preferred by the Impala in both the wet and dry seasons. This community is the primary habitat for the Impala at LDNR. All environmental variables investigated had an impact on the daily activity patterns of Impala. The majority of Impala the activity patterns were influenced by seasonality for all social group types. Given that time is a limited and valuable resource for wildlife species in general, time partitioning affected the Impala’s daily activity patterns at the study site. Time partitioning resulted in reduced or compromised activities at the expense of priority activities like vigilance. Vigilance was higher in both the wet and dry seasons, and often led to reductions in feeding time.M. Sc. (Nature Conservation)College of Agriculture and Environmental Science
Normative morality, hedonism and utilitarianism in the lives of chemsex users in South Africa
Text in English with abstract in Afrikaans and ZuluThis thesis explores the experiences of South African gay men and men who have sex with men (MSM), who combine sex and drug use in a phenomenon known as chemsex. Chemsex typically involves using psychoactive drugs such as crystal methamphetamine and gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) as a precursor to engaging in sexual encounters with other men at parties and similar social settings. The thesis focuses on how chemsex participants manage, or fail to manage, the boundaries between their sexualised drug use (chemsex) and their daily lives, particularly the daily demands of conforming to a normative society. These demands are seen as occurring in the tension between unbridled hedonism and normative moral structures (including heteronormative imperatives), and the strategies of chemsex users for managing the demands are described from within a utilitarian framework. By drawing on the lived experiences of these men, I present, in the spirit of harm reduction, utilitarian understandings and approaches that may mitigate some of the harmful consequences of participation in chemsex. I aim to shed light on the real-life consequences of chemsex for the participants, to understand the human context in which these drugs are being used. A qualitative approach was used, based on interviews with 28 participants. The data analysis made use of four overlapping registers, two of which are commonly used in qualitative studies, namely narrative analysis and thematic analysis, while the remaining two (‘critical fabulation’ and ‘reflexive intimations’) are less conventional. The thesis seeks to shed light on the complexities and nuances of chemsex as experienced by gay men and MSM in a manner that acknowledges the psychological dynamics involved without pathologising chemsex users, and which takes both the risks involved and the pleasures experienced seriously. Key findings are: First, the chemsex journeys of participants were related intimately to their experiences of coming out and being gay in conservative, heteronormative communities. Second, chemsex was experienced as intensely pleasurable and meaningful in a rich variety of ways, and allowed some participants to explore sexual and psychological domains that they would not otherwise have ventured into. Third, continued participation in chemsex had undeniably negative consequences for all participants, but all had found ways of managing these, and of mitigating the risks – albeit with varying degrees of success. It is my hope that this study, one of the first of its kind in South Africa, will assist clinicians, researchers, policymakers and others to better navigate the landscape of chemsex as a part of gay culture. Lezithombe lithokoza izimboni zolwazi zemicabango ezilula ezidlulela amadoda eGayi eNingizimu Afrika kanye nemadoda abheke ubudoda ngezinye izinkinga zokusebenzisa idwala kanye nemishwabulo yezinto ezishisayo engenakuGayi. Managing an effective character-based education mentor system for Grade 8 boys in South African schools
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThis study explores the importance of implementing a character-based education mentor system for Grade 8 boys in South African schools. It is an established fact that teenagers generally face unique challenges during their early teenage years, and many of these challenges can hinder their ability to succeed academically and emotionally.
The aim of this study is to consider how an effective character-based education mentor system of Grade 8 boys should be managed in South African schools. Furthermore, to investigate methods educators as mentors can utilise to aid character–based management strategies, establishing those which had the best response from the learners in order to make them as effective as possible. The ultimate objective being to develop these Grade 8 boys into good men.
This case study could be regarded as primarily descriptive and exploratory in nature, incorporating the basic characteristics associated with quantitative research and empirical data, which is in essence predominantly deductive and positivistic.
A character-based education mentor system aims to address these challenges by providing a solid foundation for character development, improving academic performance and helping boys to develop important life skills. This system is based on the core values of respect, responsibility and self-discipline, whilst incorporating techniques to instil these values, such as mentor group discussions, one-on-one mentoring, and role-modelling by mentors and senior learners.
From the available research educators play an important role in shaping learners understanding of good character. The learners’ understanding of what character is and what is important is mirrored by the educators – there is alignment between educators and learners, and they end up emphasising it even more than staff – resulting in a transfer of values/value proposition from staff to learners.
The findings provide recommendations for developing and implementing an effective character-based education mentor system and highlights the benefits for both learners and educators in South African schools. It is essential that the SGB, senior management, staff, parents and ultimately the boys, all work together in this character–based mentor system (the Good Man Journey), as they collectively strive to develop these Grade 8 boys into the best possible good men.
Lolu cwaningo luveza ukubaluleka kokufakwa kohlelo lokufundisa ngokuyalelwa kubafundi benga lesi-8 ezikoleni zaseNingizimu Africa. An assessment of shareholder protection in the context of share repurchases under the South African Companies Act 71 of 2008
The study focusses on the protection of shareholders in the context of share repurchases. It is important to regulate share repurchases because they are classified to be capital reduction transactions with the effect of changing the rights of shareholders. Share repurchases are regulated by Section 48 of the South African Companies Act 71 of 2008, which includes the solvency and liquidity test requirement. When South Africa abandoned the capital maintenance doctrine, an amendment to the 1973 Companies Act created the solvency and liquidity test. This test was carried forward by the 2008 Companies Act (2008 Act). The 2008 Act expanded the directors' fiduciary obligations in relation to share repurchases. The study aims to establish whether section 48 of the Act fosters adequate protection for shareholders. A comparative assessment of similar provisions of laws in South Africa and the United Kingdom (UK) is undertaken with the aim of providing a way forward through recommendations that improve the current regulation on share repurchases.
The study compares the South African position to the UK jurisdiction because both are common law jurisdictions. In addition, South Africa was colonised by UK and its corporate laws are highly influenced by the UK. There are challenges in interpreting section 48 provisions of the Companies Act hence lessons can be drawn from comparing it to regulation contained in the 2006 Companies Act of the United Kingdom. South Africa relies on UK common law to develop its law hence UK jurisdiction was chosen in this study. The study recommends the amendment of section 48 in order to simplify it. Since already existing data is used, the research methodology is classified to be qualitative and subscription databases will be used to retrieve primary and secondary sources.L.L.M. A Strategy for Reducing Maternal Mortality in Rural Kenya
Background: Migori County is categorized among regions with worst maternal survival rates in Kenya. The county’s current maternal mortality ratio (MMR) is 673 deaths per 100 000 live births. A need exists for a context-specific strategy to mitigate the persistent high maternal mortalities in rural Kenya. The researchers aimed to develop a strategy for reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in Migori, Kenya.
Methods: An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was utilised. The design was characterised by two separate studies, an initial quantitative followed by a qualitative study. The final phase entailed integration of data from the two separate studies. The findings, extensive literature review and three delays of maternal mortality theoretical framework informed the development of the strategy.
Results: The strategy for implementation considered three strategic areas, namely, interventions targeting first delays, interventions targeting second delays, interventions targeting third delays.
Conclusion: The priority interventions needed are those that enable: 1) Pregnant mothers to receive quality peripartum care in Migori hospitals, 2) Strengthened and efficient referral systems of obstetric emergencies and 3) Community knowledge empowerment on safe pregnancy and culture shift. These interventions would significantly transform the health-care system towards maternal mortality reduction. The Kenyan government and non-profit organisations should be involved in the implementation of the proposed strategy.Health Studie
