A conceptual framework for social-media crisis communication to build stakeholder relationships in Ghana
Text in English with summaries and keywords in English, Afrikaans and and Northern SothoPeople are spending more time on social media, which means that public-relations
professionals need to pay more attention to managing the reputation of their organisations. However, many Ghanaian organisations are not leveraging the relationship-building opportunities afforded by social media when managing crisis communication. It was put forward in this thesis that proactive strategies such as dialogic communication, relationship renewal and relationship enhancement can help public-relations practitioners in Ghana to achieve organisation–stakeholder objectives when managing crisis communication on social media. The main goal of this study was therefore to propose elements for a conceptual framework comprising crisis preparedness, dialogic communication, discourse of renewal and organisation–stakeholder communication that would be strategic in strengthening organisation–stakeholder relationships. In pursuit of this goal, the study answered four research questions, using an online survey and semi-structured in-depth interviews to empirically verify the proposed elements.
The study gathered vital insights, first from the literature review; and second from public relations practitioners in Ghana who are responsible for social media communication in their organisations. On completion of empirical verification, the final elements of the proposed conceptual framework were founded on the fundamentals of social-media crisis
communication preparedness, dialogic communication strategies for social-media interaction with stakeholders during a crisis; renewal strategies for mending relationships with stakeholders following a crisis; and on strengthening organisation-stakeholder relationships by means of social-media crisis communication. The proposed conceptual framework not only provides new insight into the field of communication, but also contributes to this field, specifically to public-relations as far as crisis management on social media is concerned.
Batho ba šomiša nako ye ntši go dikgokagano tša leago, go rago gore ditsebi tša dikamanotša setšhaba di swanetše go hlokomela kudu go laola seriti sa mekgatlo ya tšona. Exploring and analysing channels of communication used by the greater Tzaneen Municipality with residents regarding service delivery
This study focuses on communication challenges regarding service delivery in the Greater
Tzaneen Municipality. Service delivery is a contemporary issue that confronts citizens and
the government of South Africa. In the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, residents most
often protest for different reasons, some of which could possibly be because of what
they perceive as poor service delivery or a breakdown of communication and feedback
between the municipality and citizens. The study proposes that civil unrest can be
minimised through amongst others, communication; therefore, it is important to analyse
the channels of communication that the Greater Tzaneen Municipality uses to engage
with residents regarding service delivery. The aim of this study was to analyse the
channels currently used by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality to communicate with
residents to determine the extent to which these channels facilitate two- way
communication and how accessible they are to citizens. A mixed method exploratory and
descriptive approach was adopted. Surveys were administered to 385 residents while
semi structured interviews were conducted with four (4) municipal officers in the
department of external communication of the Great Tzaneen Municipality.
The sample
included both males and females. Data collected through the interviews and survey
questionnaires was thematically and descriptively analysed respectively. The results
revealed that both traditional and modern channels of communication are used by the
Greater Tzaneen Municipality; social media, radio and community meetings are utilised
for immediate feedback. However, the issue of data and airtime for community members
to engage on social media or with radio calls for immediate feedback is a challenge. The
study further found that although the residents are aware of service delivery issues, their
civil unrest behaviour does not change. Therefore, the study recommends that more
channels that offer immediate feedback without data and airtime challenges be used,
such as community meetings. The study also recommends that future research should
investigate how awareness can be raised to change residents’ behaviour regarding civil
unrest.M.A. (Communication Science)Communication Scienc
United witness: a theology of evangelism in light of participation in Christ
Evangelism is tied to the good news that Jesus is Lord. However, because of coercive methodologies of the past or the ties with church expansion and colonialism, many have suggested a great deal of caution concerning evangelism. This research project seeks to contribute to a renewed theology of evangelism. First, three different paradigms of evangelism in current use are evaluated in order to determine their strengths and weaknesses. Second, evidence is given to show that evangelism and mission studies have not kept up with current changes in biblical studies, particularly Paul’s theology. The theme of “participation in Christ” in Paul’s theology is examined to discern the impact it would have on a theology of evangelism. The results show that the theme of “participation” is a fruitful foundation for understanding the gospel, the goal of evangelism, and how evangelism should be practiced.M. Th. What Do Professors Do? Posthumous Letter of Love to Ma
Assuming an autoethnographic orientation and a shifting performative lettering style, I write posthumously to my mother
in response to her question, what do professors do? The letter is a reflexive contribution to contemporary decolonial
debates about unrelenting forms of colonizing knowledge, ways of overturning exclusionary credentialing systems, and
liberatory modes of knowledge creation. Engaging with the epistemology of the heart, I write to Ma about the fecundity of
silence and being a stranger; the (re)making of critical compassionate space in academia; the tenuous movements between
different epistemologies; the slipperiness of language and the ambiguities inherent to connecting diverse socio-epistemic
worlds; as well as her legacy of socio-epistemic agency. Perhaps communities of insurgent scholars and activists and those
who hold humanizing imaginaries in their bosoms may read my letter as an invitation to embrace the heart as the catalytic
organ of, and for discernment, comprehension, contemplation, radical agency, and epistemic love.Institute for Social and Health Studies (ISHS
The effects of disclosure/non-disclosure on the well-being of HIV-positive pregnant African women in Gauteng Province, South Africa
Includes summaries in Afrikaans and ZuluThis study aimed to explore the experiences of HIV-positive pregnant African women in the province of Gauteng, South Africa, and the perceived effect of their HIV-positive status disclosure/non-disclosure on well-being. Data were gathered through in-depth semi-structured interviews and were analysed according to the interpretative phenomenological analysis methodology. The findings of this study showed that in most cases disclosure was made to the male partner and female family members. The main reasons for disclosure to a partner were honesty and to allow the partner to make informed health decisions. The reasons for disclosure to family members were motivated by the need for support. Appropriate support provided by the family, or a partner, had a positive effect on a woman’s well-being. Women who did not disclose their status felt increased levels of anxiety due to the possibility of unintentional disclosure. Well-being was defined by participants and included physical well-being and happiness.Lolu cwaningo luhlose ukuhlola okubandakanya okwabesifazane base-Afrika abakhulelwe abane sandulela nculazi esifundazweni sase-Gauteng, eNingizimu Afrika, kanye nomphumela ocatshangwayo wokudalulwa/nokungavezi isimo sabo sokuba ne- sandulela nculazi enhlalakahleni. (Psychology)Psycholog
The foster care awareness programme as an intervention strategy for grandmother-headed families: a case study Diepsloot
The foster care awareness programme (FCAP) plays a critical role in strengthening the foster caregivers’ understanding of how to support vulnerable children. The activities of the programme support grandparents to be effective and efficient caregivers. The goal of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences and challenges of grandmother foster parents in relation to the FCAP as an intervention strategy.
The findings of the study show that the FCAP benefitted the grandmother-headed families. They learnt from the group activities and from one another. They acquired communication skills and learnt how to better discipline their children, build strong family values, and manage the household’s budget. The recommendations emphasise the need to incorporate foster children in group activities for joint learning. Combined group activities for foster children and parents are recommended. The Department of Social Development is encouraged to utilise group and community work methods to strengthen families and communities.M.A. (Social Work)Social Wor
The development of a validated scale of responsisible tourist behaviour in cultural heritage tourism
Includes summaries in Afrikaans and Northern SothoAs cultural heritage tourism grows, inappropriate tourist behaviour threatens the sustainability of cultural heritage resources. To protect the cultural heritage sites effectively, management should measure responsible tourist behaviour in order to implement relevant and sustainable tourism practices that correct or adapt inappropriate behaviour. To date, progress has been made in measuring responsible behaviour regarding natural resources; however, cultural heritage tourism comprises both natural and cultural resources. There is limited evidence that a validated scale already exists for measuring behaviour relating to both natural and cultural resources in cultural heritage tourism settings. This study, therefore, aimed to develop a validated scale for responsible tourist behaviour in cultural heritage tourism.
The study applied an embedded mixed-method approach using three phases to develop the validated scale. In Phase 1, the initial pool of items was generated through a literature review. Two expert panels reviewed and revised the items to ensure (i) face validity, and (ii) content validity and analysed using the Fuzzy Delphi Method. For phases 2 and 3, data were collected from tourists who had visited one of South Africa’s World Heritage Sites with cultural value (Fossil Hominid Sites, Robben Island, or Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape). The data were randomly divided into two samples. Phase 2 assessed construct validity and reliability of the proposed scale, while Phase 3 cross-validated the scale by mainly using factor analyses and t-tests.
The theoretical contributions that were made include (i) a definition of cultural heritage tourism, (ii) a scale for responsible tourist behaviour in cultural heritage tourism, and (iii) a contribution to the body of knowledge in the tourism management field on the topic ‘responsible tourist behaviour in cultural heritage tourism settings’. Moreover, this study provided social science researchers with a set of procedures that will assist them in developing a new validated scale and improving the predictive capability of their existing scales by comparing their methods with the methods of the current study. Lastly, the developed validated scale will assist cultural heritage tourism sites in assessing responsible tourist behaviour and in employing sustainable tourism practices that will correct or adapt inappropriate behaviour.
Maitshwaro ao e sego a maleba a baeti a tliša matšhošetši go poloko ya methopo ya setšo ka makaleng a boeti a bohwa bja setšo. Exploring management practices of directors at early childhood education centres in Ghana
The aim of this study was to explore the management practices of directors at ECCD centres in Ghana. The study aimed to explore the application of basic management principles by ECCD directors at their centres to understand their perceptions of their managerial roles and the contextual factors that influence their management effectiveness and efficiency. The study used a qualitative approach underpinned by a multi-site case study design. The purposively selected case sites were located in five metropolitan and municipal districts within the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. The population of the study included all ECCD directors in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Sixteen ECCD directors and four board members were selected to participate in the study. Interviews and document reviews were the primary data collection instruments used. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the interview data, while content analysis was used in reviewing the documents. Administrative Management Theory principles of Henri Fayol (planning, organising, coordinating and controlling) were identified from the data. Although evidence from the study showed that ECCD directors put much effort into managing their centres, the study also found that ECCD directors experience various challenges with applying basic management principles at their centres. The identified challenges included but were not limited to ECCD directors’ insufficient skills and knowledge in management principles; insufficient technical support from the district education office; lack of active engagement of key internal and external ECCD stakeholders in the management process; and a lack of effective utilisation of enablers of effective and efficient management functions at the input, process, and output phases of management. Other challenges included inadequate utilisation of external planning inputs; lack of use of varied data sources for planning; inadequate mobilisation of resources; and a lack of support from the ECCD community/environment. In addressing the identified challenges, the researcher developed a contextual framework using a system theory approach in applying Fayol’s basic principles of management to guide ECCD directors in managing their centres.D. Hope in the midst of crisis : reading Daniel 9 in the 21st century Zimbabwean context
Zimbabwe has witnessed a socio-economic and political crisis since the dawn of the 21st century.
The Zimbabwean nation that was for several decades under British colonial subordination is once again subjected to a native aristocracy. During the first decade of the 21st century, Zimbabwe was classified as a failed state. Western nations criticized the fast-tracked land reform initiative that evicted white commercial farmers. Additionally, they penalised political leaders, sending the nation into a deeper economic crisis that severely hurt the agricultural sector. Over three million people left the country to seek refuge and employment abroad. Citizens from mainstream opposition parties additionally experienced the crises of suffering, poverty, unemployment, victimisation, kidnapping, corruption and poor governance, among others. This study argues that apocalyptic literature, including the book of Daniel in the Old Testament, has the potential to inspire hope in the hearts of its readers and/or listeners to its interpretations. Hence the critical question asked in this thesis is, “Why would the findings of a historical critical reading of Daniel 9 be considered appropriate in bringing hope to a hopeless Zimbabwean 21st century context if read through a contextual lens?” Amidst the current Zimbabwean crisis, the researcher is of the view that a historical critical reading of Daniel 9 reveals that the text was written to people who were experiencing hopelessness. Therefore, the appropriation of the findings of a historical critical reading of Daniel 9 to the hopeless members of the opposition parties of the 21st century Zimbabwean context of crisis may be ideal for generating hope. Despite their differences on history, geography and background among others, this research was able to identify apparent common traits between the context of the production of the book of Daniel, that is, the Second Temple period and the 21st century Zimbabwean context.D. Experiences of men undergoing prostate cancer screening at a specific hospital in Gauteng Province
Background
Prostate cancer is a worldwide problem affecting men globally. Prostate cancer screening
is crucial to detect the disease early and in order to mitigate advanced disease and high -cost treatments. However, men are not well informed regarding the disease and not
receiving the much-needed support during prostate cancer screening.
Purpose
The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of men undergoing prostate cancer
screening at a tertiary hospital in Gauteng and how they would like to be supported while
attending screening.
Research methods
A qualitative, exploratory research study was conducted to explore the experiences of
men who attended prostate cancer screening and understanding how they wish to be
supported. A convenience sampling procedure was conducted and a total of 19
participants took part in the in-depth interviews. Data were analysed using qualitative
thematic analysis.
Findings
Six themes emerged from the study which were (1) prostate cancer knowledge, (2)
screening influencers, (3) sources of information regarding prostate cancer, (4) barriers
to screening, (5) symptoms experienced during screening, and (6) the support needs.
Conclusions
The study provided evidence that the lack of knowledge regarding prostate cancer was
still a concern for men. Further, the study found that health care practitioners were not
providing information regarding prostate cancer. Whilst some felt that doctors did not
involve them much before embarking on screening procedure. It is also recommended
that some mild analgesia be administered to patients while undergoing prostate cancer
screening, as patient felt the experience might not encourage others to come for
screening.M.A. (Public Health (Health Studies))Health Studie
