    Get PDF
The paper investigates factors influencing binge drinking behavior among university undergraduate students. Data is drawn from a quantitative survey conducted on undergraduate students’ perceptions of peer pressure, students living arrangement, socio-economic status and binge drinking at a South African university. 330 students participated in the study by completing a paper-based survey. The study found a statistically significant correlation between factors of peer pressure, students staying off-campus, high socio-economic status and binge drinking. Female students engage in binge drinking more than male students. Students with friends who drink were more likely to engage in binge drinking than those with friends drinking less. Students living off campus were more likely to engage in binge drinking of alcohol than those staying on campus. Students with high socioeconomic status were more likely to engage in binge drinking than those with low socioeconomic status. The paper makes an empirical contribution to future studies to explore binge drinking behavior amongst university students.SociologyN/

Reflections on the Value of Mixed Focus Groups with Adult Learner Research Participants: Exploring Gender Disparities and Gendered Relationships

    No full text
This is an article in which we reflect on the value of conducting mixed-gender focus groups, by also engaging with feedback from participants. The purpose of this article is two-fold. Firstly, we consider whether the setting up of mixed-gender focus group sessions has the potential as a research process to contribute to transforming people’s understandings of their gendered relationships. Secondly, we relate our discussion to the question of the mutability of stereotypical thinking in the context in question, taking into account the idea that cultures in different contexts can be seen as “in the making” through the way in which people together create meaning. We explain how the first author of the article organized focus groups which were mixed in terms of gender with the purpose that the adult learner participants could develop their perceptions as they related to each other around the topic of gender inequalities.). The sessions were conducted in two adult learning Centers located in a rural and an urban area respectively – Xola and Zodwa – within the Cacadu District of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Two mixed focus groups took place in 2016 (one in each Center, with 19 females and 5 males altogether), and a follow up took place in 2018, to further discuss recommendations. In 2022, another set of focus group sessions was arranged in the same Centers, with 10 females and 6 males who were asked to participate and agreed. As part of a related discussion on gendered relationships, they were asked specific questions regarding how they understood the value of the mixed-gender conversations. Results from the various sets of groups suggest that focus groups can indeed help people to explore and rethink gender disparities and to think of ways forward in terms of enriched understandings. We recommend that mixed-gender focus group sessions should be regarded by researchers as a potential space to fruitfully set up a way for people to develop their sense of interdependence in their social relations.Adult Basic Education (ABET

Strategies to improve compliance to Post Exposure Prophylaxis guidelines for midwifery practitioners at specific hospitals in Gauteng Province, South Africa

    No full text
Background: Midwifery practitioners as frontline healthcare workers remain susceptible to occupational exposure to infections while performing their routine duties. About 90% of occupational exposures occur in the developing world due to a lack of awareness and structured training in the prevention and management of accidental exposures. Midwifery practitioners are regularly exposed to amniotic fluid, vomitus, blood, urine, faeces, sweat, vaginal secretions and breastmilk. The World Health Organisation’s HIV PEP guidelines are an essential instrument for the prevention of occupational HIV infection and have proven to be an effective method to prevent infections among healthcare workers. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to develop strategies to improve compliance with Post Exposure Prophylaxis guidelines for midwifery practitioners in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Methodology: The study followed the concurrent mixed methods research approach with qualitative nested in quantitative design. The study adopted the non-experimental quantitative research with a cross-sectional descriptive design and a descriptive phenomenological design for the qualitative strand. Sampling, data collection and analysis: A random sampling technique was used to collect quantitative data from seventy-one (71) midwifery practitioners. At the same time, a purposive non-probability sampling technique was used for the qualitative approach with two (2) OHS practitioners and 13 midwifery practitioners. Data was collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data was analysed with SPSS version 24, and thematic analysis was used for the qualitative strand. Results: Maternity units are a high-risk clinical area. The midwifery practitioners have good knowledge about PEP but fail to comply fully with the guidelines. The study revealed the underreporting of accidental exposures to blood and body fluids and the underutilisation of PEP services. The process of obtaining PEP after exposure is tedious, according to participants. Hence, some prefer to seek PEP services elsewhere. Strategies to improve compliance were developed in this study.Health Studie

The adoption and diffusion of e-commerce by township SMEs : a mixed methods methodology

    No full text
Text in EnglishThe changing business landscape has made e-commerce crucial for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), thus enabling market expansion, increased profitability, enhanced competitiveness and innovation. However, e-commerce adoption in developing countries, particularly in townships such as Soweto, differs from developed countries because of cultural, infrastructural and business environment variations. Previous research has mainly used quantitative methodologies, limiting the understanding of Soweto SMEs' perspectives and experiences in the adoption and diffusion of e-commerce. Moreover, existing innovation theoretical models are difficult to apply in this instance, and there is a paucity of research in post-adoption phases, hindering insights into e-commerce implementation among Soweto-based SMEs. This study aimed to determine the factors that influence the adoption and diffusion of e-commerce among Soweto-based SMEs. For this reason, an integrated theoretical framework was developed on the adoption and diffusion of e-commerce to address the unique peculiarities of Soweto-based SMEs using three theoretical models: Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Technology-Organisation-Environment (TOE), and Diffusion of Innovation (DOI). This study employed mixed research methods, which was influenced mainly by the research questions and the pragmatist research paradigm of the study. Purposeful sampling was used to select Soweto-based SMEs that were registered on the databases of three enterprise development organisations. It deployed the triangulation convergent mixed method design, where both quantitative and qualitative data are collected in a single phase. The researcher analysed the two datasets separately and independently using quantitative (SPSS) and qualitative (Atlas. ti) analytical procedures. This study employed exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and the Kaizer-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) index to address the validity of the findings. The findings indicated that Soweto-based SMEs’ adoption of e-commerce was significantly influenced by perceived benefits, perceived usefulness and ease of use. Soweto-based SMEs rely on social media to market and run their businesses. They can afford mobile data costs; however, they do not rely on the government for support. The study recommends four strategies to enhance internet access, boost e-commerce adoption, and increase government support for Soweto-based SMEs, thus emphasising the importance of expanding theoretical models and employing integrated frameworks in township business environment. In addition, this study contributes to the body of knowledge through the integration of multiple theories, coupled with a rigorous research design, to enable a more in-depth exploration of the field of e-commerce adoption among Soweto-based SMEs.D. Mentoring and resilience development of school principals in the Tinara Circuit of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro

    No full text
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and XhosaThis study explores a professional development strategy to develop school principal resilience as a necessary leadership quality in the 21st-century educational environment. The sample will consist of five school principals in the Tinara Circuit who participated in a mentoring programme initiated by the Department of Basic Education. Participants will be selected based on how informative they are in the field of resilience and resilience leadership practices. The participants will include principals from the Tinara Circuit who have been in the office between three and five years since their appointment to the principalship. The aforementioned schools were part of the cohort that did not meet the 60% benchmark set by The Department of Basic Education for passing matric examinations. The selected schools have been the worst performers in the Tinara Circuit. This study aims to increase the depth of knowledge of how leadership practices foster resilience, how principals understand resilience, and what practices can be used to foster resilience. It is significant as no reported study has identified the relationships between principals' leadership practices and resilience, and whether resilient leadership practices can be developed or enhanced. This research study hopes to contribute to understanding and recognising school leadership challenges and, more importantly, strategies to manage them in the form of resiliency development. Secondly, an understanding of leadership practice within the same environment may serve as motivation to leaders in underperforming schools to replicate the leadership practices of these resilient school principals, which could be used to improve their outcomes in their schools, thereby contributing to the development and growth of their institutions. To date, no reported study has identified the relationships between principals' leadership practices and resilience, and whether resilient leadership practices can be developed or enhanced. Olu phononongo luphonononga isicwangciso sophuhliso lobuchwephesha ukuphuhlisa ukomelela kwenqununu yesikolo njengomgangatho wobunkokeli oyimfuneko kwimeko yemfundo yenkulungwane yama-21. Why has physics failed to completely explain the universe: a philosophical approach to a final theory

    No full text
This thesis investigates why there is still no ‘final’ physical theory of the universe despite the enormous resources involved. Current physical and philosophical methodologies are examined leading to a new strategy. The history of knowledge from mythology to the present day is traced to establish the general nature and psychology of human sapience and group dynamics. This reflects strongly on human common sense, education and entrenchment caused by peer pressure of mathematical and physical ideas. Arguments consider physical and philosophical standpoints of empirical versus rational and mathematical versus non-mathematical deduction. The former is decided by introducing a special foundational philosophy; the latter by arguing the universe has no need of mathematics in any form to exist. Criticizing current ideas is useless unless they can be replaced by a better theory. As a paradigm must be better than that which it replaces, it must stand up to testing against observation. Using the concept of time with a clear definition, possibly the first such definition, shows how a universe must causally develop. The human concept of space, together with a reason for its 3-dimensionality, automatically arises to answer, ‘if a universe is to be created, into what is it placed?’ The conundrum of existence is also explained. The reason for contemporary physics’ failure is its reliance on observation, which is governed by unreliable human perception, in particular its lack of definitions for time, length, mass, electric charge, energy, work, wave function from which its ‘laws’ are deduced. Doubt is raised on physics’ main theories, quantum mechanics and relativistic field theories which deny a fundamental cause for the universe. Mathematics suffers from overconfidence in its efficacy and accuracy. There also exist processes that the foundational theory shows are completely hidden from current physical and astrophysical experiments. The conclusion to be drawn is that mathematical physics cannot produce a final theory whereas non-mathematical reasoning can. Foundational philosophy then becomes the means of attaining a final theory with physics the method of determining philosophy’s accuracy. As no such pointer has been considered in the literature it has to be a testable primary assumption. Lines for further research to produce a complete theory of the universe are given. Research librarianship in academic libraries in South Africa: Services, competencies, and responsibilities

    No full text
It is acknowledged that academic libraries have evolved over time in their traditional duty, which is ascribed predominantly to ongoing collaboration between research librarians and other research units within universities. This paper is an extract from a broad study that was conducted to investigate the evolving role of research librarians in South African academic libraries. This paper reports the findings based on the first phase of the research, which adopted a quantitative approach involving 48 librarians. Specifically, the study sought to identify the services rendered by South African academic libraries in support of research to determine the competencies needed for research librarians, determine the key responsibilities and job descriptions of the librarian responsible for research support, and establish the importance of having a dedicated librarian in support of research in the libraries. The data was collected using an online questionnaire administered to librarians responsible for or carrying out specific duties associated with research librarianship in 26 South African universities. The key findings of the study reveal that research librarians’ duties and responsibilities are distributed among and performed by different library workers, including information librarians, subject librarians, institutional repository librarians, and faculty librarians; the key services associated with research librarianship as identified by the respondents include database searches, bibliometrics, and research data management; the position requires a variety of competencies including knowledge of new information systems, research cycle, and academic environment, among others. The respondents unanimously concurred that the position of research librarians is critical in academic libraries. The study concludes that the research librarianship function at academic libraries in South Africa is fragmented and recommends that Research librarians be involved in research, not only as assistants to research but they must also be engaged in research studies so that they can better comprehend the needs of the research community.Unisa Librar

Exploring methods teachers use to teach EFAL to progressed learners in a heterogeneous primary school classroom : a case of Lichtenburg selected primary schools

    No full text
Abastract in English with Afrikaans and Zulu translationsThis study investigated the instructional strategies employed by teachers in delivering English First Additional Language (EFAL) to progressed learners within a heterogeneous primary school classroom in Lichtenburg, South Africa. Adopting a qualitative research approach underpinned by a case study design, data were collected from ten EFAL teachers through semi-structured interviews, non-participant classroom observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was employed to interpret the data, and triangulation of data sources enhanced the credibility and reliability of the findings. The results indicated that effective EFAL instruction in heterogeneous classrooms requires teachers to possess both strong subject content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. Participants expressed concern regarding the policy of automatic progression, noting that it often results in learners advancing without meeting the required academic standards. This, in turn, increases the instructional burden on teachers, as progressed learners frequently lack foundational knowledge and require additional instructional support. Furthermore, the study found that the Department of Basic Education has yet to implement a comprehensive strategy to adequately prepare EFAL teachers for the challenges of teaching progressed learners in diverse classroom settings. The findings underscore the complexity of teaching in such environments and highlight the need for targeted professional development. The study recommends ongoing teacher training focused on content mastery, pedagogical strategies, and remedial teaching methods. Additionally, it proposes a framework to support and enhance EFAL instruction for progressed learners in heterogeneous primary school classrooms. Governments, including the South African government, respond to opportunities and challenges from the 4th industrial revolution with policies and strategies addressing inclusive digital transformation (South Africa, 2016). Digital transformation has become one of the critical strategies governments are adopting to promote inclusive growth. Almost every aspect of daily life has been radically transformed by digital technology, and it can fundamentally change the way people in an organization work. The public sector and businesses have high expectations; however, the challenges in adopting digital technology remain through a lack of strategy and understanding from management and inadequate technology skills. This study aims to explore the implementation of digital transformation at the Department of Employment and Labour to ensure efficiency and higher performance and to understand the research problem of why the full potential of digital adaptation on legacy systems still needs to be explored in the Department of Employment and Labour. The researcher used qualitative research. Semi-structured interviews was used to collect data with 12 participants within ICT management, middle and senior management from different ICT sections who fully understand what is happening in the organization. A non-probability sampling method was used in this study to select the sample from the target population, and a purposive sampling method was applied. A thematic analysis of the data was conducted. The findings established and shed light on the significance of digital transformation in the Department of Employment and Labour and also underscored the importance of being entirely digitally transformed. The extreme role of digital transformation in improving efficiency and operational performance is exploring the challenges that hinder inclusive digital transformation and proposing interventions to enhance implementation to improve efficiency and performance.MBAGraduate School of Business Leadershi

An Image Catalogue of Micron- and Sb-micron-Sized Constrictions Fabricated with the Femtosecond Laser and Created with the AFM

    No full text
In this article a series of constrictions in the micron and sub-micron range fabricated with the femtosecond laser on superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 thin films is scanned with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The AFM images of the resulting constrictions are depicted. The width of the constrictions fabricated range from 1.24 um micron dimension to 812 nm in the sub-micron range. The laser ablation spot size or diameter is set at 15.8 lm for the femtosecond laser and the separation distance between the centers of the laser ablation spots is varied between (16–17) lm as a result generating the variable constriction widths for the different superconductive bridges. The images of the fabricated micron and sub-micron constrictions are shown as a catalogue in the article. The AFM images give the surface morphology, dimensions, and physical continuity of the fabricated constriction qubits. The I–V characteristics of the constrictions are measured and validate the electrical continuity and superconductivity of the fabricated constrictions.Electrical and Mining EngineeringUniversity of South Afric
