    No full text
Abstracts in English, Northern Sotho and AfrikaansThe aim of this research was to explore the experiences of teachers on parental involvement in the primary schools of Lebowakgomo Circuit, Limpopo Province. The study sought to examine the role of parental involvement, the experiences of teachers on effective parental involvement, the challenges that teachers face when trying to improve parental involvement and the strategies to improve parental involvement. Literature research on related subject was followed to address the study aim. The theoretical frameworks that informed this study were Epstein’s theory overlapping sphere of influence on parental involvement. A qualitative research approach was adopted with a case study design. Twelve participants were purposefully sampled from the four selected schools. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interview and document analysis and data were analysed using thematic data analysis. The findings revealed that teachers understand the role that parents should play in the education of their children, the benefits of parental involvement and how lack of parental involvement affects the child, although there are still challenges that are faced when trying to improve parental involvement. Teachers experience the challenge of uneducated parents, lack of confidence, lack of time, attitude of teachers and teachers not being trained on parental involvement at university level. The study revealed that there are no written policies, programmes and workshops in place to improve parental involvement. The study recommends that it is the responsibility of the school to involve parents and thus school leaders should run programmes and hold workshops to educate parents on the role that they could play in their child’s education. The Department of Basic Education should encourage universities training teacher to include the concept of parental involvement in their curricula.Maikemisetso a nyakisiso ye e be e le go hlahloba maitemogelo a barutisi mabapi le go kgatha tema ga batswadi dikolong tsa tlase tsa Lebowakgomo Circuit, Profenseng ya Limpopo. Ed. Construing political history: transitivity analyses of the process types in selected Ghanaian presidential independence anniversary speeches under the fourth republic

    No full text
This study affirms the contention that language is a tool that politicians use to construe their experiences of the world. Hence, Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, with focus on ideational meta function as a framework, is used to carry out transitivity analyses of the process types in four purposefully selected Ghanaian Presidential Independence Day Anniversary Speeches: the 2020 Independence Day Anniversary Speech delivered by Nana Akufo-Addo; the 2016 Independence Day Anniversary Speech delivered by John Dramani Mahama, the 2012 Independence Day Anniversary Speech delivered by John Evans Attah Mills and the 2007 Independence Day Anniversary Speech delivered by John Agyekum Kufuor. Halliday (1994:23) asserts that language is “functional and systemic” and is used to make meaning. Therefore, the study concentrated on the processes and participants that were dominant and helped to bring out the meanings of the selected Presidential Independence Day Anniversary Speeches. Qualitative research design was used to study which transitivity patterns dominate the data and how they help contribute to the meanings of the speeches. The study discovered that the material process dominated the speeches, followed by the relational process, mental process and verbal process. This pattern suggests that all four of these Presidents used these process types to help them communicate to Ghanaians how the founding fathers struggled to gain independence for the country. The study also revealed that they cast the speeches more in the material, relational and mental processes, making the forefathers prominent in the struggles for Ghana’s independence. They described the events that happened and drew the minds of Ghanaians to the events that surrounded the country’s independence. Further, the study revealed that these presidents employed the universal or the inclusive “we” as an actor, senser and sayer to spread the load of responsibility and to inform the audience that actions taken were not fully the responsibility of one individual but rather the outcome of collective work of members of the Government. The study recommends that future research on Ghanaian Presidential Independence Day Anniversary Speeches should focus on the other two strands of Halliday’s meta functions (i.e., Interpersonal and Textual meta functions)D. Institutionalisation of the government-wide monitoring and evaluation system by the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency

    No full text
Includes summaries in Zulu and XhosaPerformance monitoring and evaluation, as a development agenda, has been one of the core drivers and policy imperatives in South Africa, with an increasing acceptance of the need to improve governance, accountability, and continuous transformation in the public service. This affirmation has been realised through the policy pronouncement of the Government-wide Monitoring and Evaluation System in 2005, which was approved and adopted by the South African government for systematic collection and use of performance information to evaluate government performance through programmes. The formation of the Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation, now called the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency, aimed to coordinate a systemic programme of policy performance monitoring and evaluation across government through the Government-wide Monitoring and Evaluation policy framework. Key enablers to this mandate have been the development trajectory set by the National Development Plan and the subsequent outcome-based approach, which provided for the alignment of the delivery agreements of ministers with the departmental strategic plans to improve coordination within and amongst departments. This has placed the department at the centre of government to institutionalise the Government-wide Monitoring and Evaluation System through its policy framework, to improve the quality of service delivery, measure results and foster accountability and evidence-based decision-making. Using a systemic document analysis, this study aims to examine the role of the Department of Planning Monitoring and Evaluation in relation to the institutionalisation of the Government-wide Monitoring and Evaluation System. Further, it aims to examine the practice and sustainability of the system together with the related challenges. Findings confirm strides that have been made and the conducive environment with enhanced capacities, skills development and legislation that has been created for the system. This is with an acknowledgement of the complexities and the elaborate nature of the institutional arrangements and intergovernmental relations across government for monitoring and evaluation, which continue to constrain the delivery environment. As the coalface of services, the local government continues to lag and requires attention. Thus, the recommendations of this study are based on policy, process, and institutional improvement to sustain the Government-wide Monitoring and Evaluation System to safeguard the investments made and meet the demand that has been created.Ukuhlola nokutjhejisiswa kwezinga lokusebenza njengehloso yetuthuko kade kungenye yeenkhwezeleli ezisisekelo begodu neziziinsika zomthethomgomo eSewula Afrika. The impact of an onboarding programme on work engagement and organisational commitment in a tertiary institution

    No full text
The primary aim of the study was to explore the relationship between an onboarding progamme, work engagement and organisational commitment in a South African tertiary institution. The secondary aim was to ascertain whether the demographic characteristics of employees (gender, age, supervising/not supervising others, qualifications and tenure) differed significantly in terms of their onboarding experience, work engagement or organisational commitment. This was achieved through a quantitative survey completed by a stratified sample of n = 176 employees in a tertiary institution. The instruments that were used for the study were a biographical questionnaire, the Onboarding Experience (OE) Questionnaire, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9) and the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ). The results revealed statistically significant relationships between onboarding experience and organisational commitment and between work engagement and organisational commitment. This was based on the analysis of correlational and inferential statistics. In terms of demographic characteristics, there were statistically significant relationships based on the OE, UWES and OCQ scores. Testing the mean differences revealed differences in onboarding experience, work engagement and organisational commitment based on demographic characteristics. Based on the results of the study, recommendations were made for industrial psychology professionals in terms of their onboarding, work engagement and organisational commitment practices, particularly within the tertiary education sector.M.Com. The South African Police Service`s fingerprints system cannot identify latent prints of innocent people or first-time offenders, it can only identify persons who had previously been charged. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the use of fingerprint systems to identify latent prints of first-time offenders. A literature review was conducted to provide a background to the topic and to highlight international standards when identifying offenders by means of fingerprints uplifted from the crime scene. The research approach used in this study is a qualitative approach with a case study research design to investigate the study topic through the experiences of officials who are working with the fingerprint system. Nineteen interviews were conducted in this study. The sample used was small because of the shortage of fingerprint experts. The findings of this study revealed that the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) cannot identify latent prints of first-time offenders and that many case dockets are still closed with positive fingerprints because of the lack of identification information. The implemented Person Identity Verification Application (PIVA) system which integrates the fingerprint systems from a few government departments cannot identify latent prints. The PIVA system is placed in police stations not in the LCRC as its aim is to assist the criminal justice system (mainly the courts) with case management and the movement of the offender. The study therefore recommended the implementation of a system that will allow LCRC experts to identify first-time offenders who are not on LCRC database. It also recommended that the SAPS should have a database of fingerprints information from the citizens who are applying for security checks. This database can store information separately from that of the criminal records and will be accessed to search fingerprints information not found on the Automated Fingerprints Identification System (AFIS). To avoid poorly obtained fingerprints as it has been a concern of all participants, police stations should be issued with digital fingerprints scanners. Strategies employed by social work supervisors and supervisees to manage their supervision relationships within the South African NGO sector

    Get PDF
M.A. (Social Work)Social WorkSocial work services in South Africa are rendered by Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), amongst various other entities. To ensure effective service delivery to clients, social workers working in the NGO sector are supervised. For supervision to occur, both the supervisor and the supervisee enter a supervision relationship and as such, locating the supervision relationship is crucial. This study thus explored strategies employed by social work supervisors and supervisees to manage their supervision relationships within the South African NGO sector. A qualitative approach following an exploratory, descriptive, and contextual design was employed in the study and data collected by means of semi-structured interviews. The data was analysed using Moustakas’ steps for data analysis as outlined by Holloway and Wheeler (2010:286). Guba’s and Lincoln’s model was employed for data verification. Ethical issues such as informed consent, confidentiality, anonymity, harm to participants, debriefing, management of information and beneficence were followed in the study. The study established that participants employed different strategies to manage their supervision relationships. The participants’ strategies included holding regular supervision sessions, early interventions, confrontation, communicating, understanding, tolerance, and resorting to disciplinary procedures. Based on the findings, recommendations for the social work profession, policy makers and future research are proffered with the goal of improving social work supervision relationships

A framework for branding the City of Johannesburg as a cultural heritage destination

Text in English with summaries in Afrikaans and TsongaWidespread negative perceptions regarding Johannesburg can have a negative impact on tourism visitor numbers in the city. It is not clear whether city stakeholders are consulted for, or allowed to participate in, the city’s branding initiatives, which should typically be based on city stakeholders’ opinions. Therefore, it is evident that substantial knowledge gaps exist regarding the implementation of appropriate structures and processes for efficient and effective city branding. The current research entailed developing a framework for branding the City of Johannesburg that was tested among city stakeholders. The study followed a qualitative approach involving the use of a single case study, namely, the City of Johannesburg and a review of literature rooted in grounded theory was adopted for the study. Adolescent psychosocial identity development associated with traditional rituals and rites of passage in the Bosomtwe District of Ghana

    No full text
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThis study aimed to explore how adolescents in the Bosomtwe District of Ghana experience their psychological identity development in relation to participating in traditional rituals and rites of passage. This study employed a phenomenology case study design. Focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews were used to gather data from participants. The data was analysed through thematic content analysis. The study participants comprised adolescent learners, teachers and parents, who were purposefully selected. Twenty (20) adolescent learners participated in the focus group discussion, whereas twelve (12) teachers, twelve (12) parents and eight (8) adolescent learners participated in the individual interviews. Findings show that adolescents typically experience their psychological identity development while they participate in traditional rituals and rites of passage in varied and diversified ways. The study found that these initiation processes exposed adolescents to unique cultural values, aided them in developing a broader worldview and might inspire them to explore their identities and beliefs. Furthermore, adolescents experienced increased self-awareness and improved social skills due to participating in ritualisation processes. In contrast, the study also revealed that not all adolescents have positive experiences, as this initiation in the Bosomtwe District may serve to reinforce harmful gender norms, exclusionary practices, or other forms of discrimination. Above all, it is critical to underline that counselling services should strongly emphasise the value of family and community support to assist adolescents' identity development. Hence, a collaborative approach involving guidance counsellors and other professionals, community members, and their leaders is recommended when providing counselling services to adolescents. Policymakers might support efforts to advance inclusivity and cultural diversity by promoting, funding, and maintaining traditional practices. The study also suggests creating policies and structures to encourage integrating traditional practices in formal schooling as it significantly empowers youth and community practice. Future research needs to be comparative studies to comprehend the distinctive features of traditional practices in the Bosomtwe District of Ghana and how they differ from those in other regions of Africa. Lolu cwaningo luhloselwe ukuhlola ukuthi abantwana abasakhula esifundeni sase-Bosomtwe e-Ghana bakuthola kanjani ukuthuthuka kobunikazi babo obungokwengqondo ngokuhlobene nokubamba iqhaza kwabo emikhubeni yendabuko namasiko okudlula. Employer expectation of requisite skills of graduates of the master's in psychology with specialisation in research consultation (MARC) graduates

    No full text
This study aimed at describing employers’ expectations from MARC graduates, with the intention to address the skills required by employers from MARC graduates to be employable in the South African labour market, as a research question. To address this research question, the sociological institutional theory was applicable to construct the expectations of employers from MARC graduates. In addition, through the social constructionism paradigm, the methodology followed, included a generic qualitative research design and a snowball selection method to access ten participants, where data was collected through semi-structured interviews with the use of an interview schedule as a guide to conduct the interviews. Data received were transcribed, and a thematic analysis method applied for analysis. The findings of this study demonstrated the constructed expectations that employers shared, to make sense of effective research skills that MARC graduates should possess to become employable. These employers had important roles in decision-making phases of recruitment, hence, exploring their constructed expectations assisted in determining the requisite skills contributing towards graduateness and employability of MARC graduates. Therefore, the findings indicated that MARC graduates should obtain completed qualifications and be affiliated with a professional board for meaningful networking. Furthermore, employers of MARC graduates emphasised the value of recruiting graduates with generic skills that complemented their qualifications and contributed towards effective performance in the work world. Moreover, these employers valued MARC graduates with subject knowledge that would assist these graduates in performing work activities effectively. These employers indicated that MARC graduates were expected to obtain work experience prior to joining the working world. Therefore, employers of MARC graduates expect graduates who have been exposed to research processes and are able to apply these processes practically, to benefit different communities. The findings of this study might contribute to the curriculum development of training employable MARC graduates, as well as to address the needs of employers. However, the small number of participants involved in the study may be limitations to the study.Psycholog
